Great find! Heard people talking about this place at a bar and went to try it for ourselves. All homemade and delicious! The bread options are wonderful and she had a list of about 5-7 soups to choose from. Server was very nice as well as the girl cashing us out. My only one recommendation would be possibly finding a different vessel for the soup like a hot paper/cardboard soup cup because the plastic container is flimsy and gets quite hot! We had the most delicious lunch at The Gateway Cafe & Grill yesterday! I am amazed at the quality of food coming out of that kitchen! Truly the best soup and sandwich combo my husband and I have enjoyed in 25+ years together. I had the Lemon chicken and chickpea soup with a turkey, bacon, and swiss sandwich pressed on fabulous Cuban bread. The flavor of the soup was outstanding and the texture of the Cuban bread pressed with so much fresh sliced turkey and bacon that I could not even finish the half of a sandwich. My husband loved, loved, loved the French onion soup that Michelle has a secret recipe for (I am sure it's a secret because we have NEVER had French onion soup like this before)! His half of a sandwich was a turkey Reuben that was on wonderful marbled pumpernickel and rye bread with so much meat it was tough to bite into. But he did it and it was out of this world GREAT! Candy was our server and was terrific. Michelle came out of the kitchen as the owner to say hi as we had met her out of The Gateway Cafe & Grill the week before. A FANTASTIC place for lunch! Really terrrific sandwiches for the money, and a nice little spot. The staff was also very kind. The italian melt was very good. Couple of guys we ate with had a good looking turkey reuben as well. Overall would come back many times. Just make sure you come through the front door as the back entrance through the office complex is a bit odd. Also skip the tots. Kinda not great. But this is not a tots place, it's a darn good sandwich shop. read more

Food was delicious hot and fresh. Customer service seemed attentive and quick. My only gripe is the prices I ordered a fish and chips lunch and 16oz pop and it was almost $20 bucks lol. Which is a bit steep for lunch. Should've gotten the soup lol. Anyways the fish and chips meal came with everything on the menu that it was supposed to come with it minus the coleslaw which was a bummer and which is why I took away a star. Great atmosphere! Lunch is pretty busy with a continuous stream of guests. This place is awesome! Service staff is crazy good. Pretty much all locals of all ages. Approx 15 tables with ample outlets for charging your device. Menu is a good assortment of American comfort food. I had an awesome Greek Burger which was on point squared! Juicy to say the least. If I could give this place 10 stars, I would. Easily the most accommodating diner I've ever been to. The staff is continuously great and the most friendly people you will ever meet. Since I work right across the street, I am here quite often and I have never had a bad experience. The food is absolutely amazing. If you're a breakfast connoisseur such as myself, look no further for the best breakfast sandwich in town. And for an extra $2.50, you get a coffee and tots -- and let me tell tell you the tater tots are phenomenal. Cute little cafe in Tonawanda. Daily, different array of homemade soups. I've had mushroom, squash, and onion. I cant pick a favorite. The Cuban sandwich is divine. I like that they do a pick two-soup and salad or sandwich for 8.99. Their portions are enormous. I'm not a huge fan of the inside. It's loud for a cafe and it's always cold. I love to order to go. Too bad they can't do an outdoor seating area, but due to location, it's not possible. Parking is iffy. Not many slots. UPDATE: My kids and I now go here sever times a month. All summer, they had kids meals for $1.99. I am now acclimated to the inside lol. The temp I initially had an issue with is now never an issue. I work down the street so I grabbed lunch to-go and it was amazing! They were really fast with my order and the food was nice and hot when I picked up. I got the pick 2 combo which is a great deal, portions are big for a combo. The homemade chicken noodle soup was delicious and the sandwich was packed. I've been wanting to check this place out for quite some time now, as I live real close by, but I want to say that when they first opened, the hours were real short and I just didn't have the time? I could be wrong though. Now let's get to the review. Stopped in for lunch with my sister and my toddler son, picked a table to sit at, looked at the menu (a few already at each table), decided what we wanted, and went up to the counter to place our order. Girl behind the counter was so very nice, gave my son a big coloring book and crayons. We sat and a few min later our food was brought to us. We all got a sandwich with tots. These guys seriously have the perfect menu. Great food. The sandwiches are huge. I went with the sweet corn nuggets, Reuben, and French onion soup. Soup was awesome, great flavor. The Reuben was packed with meat and delicious. I've never had sweet corn nuggets before so those were a pleasant surprise. Glad I stopped in! One of my absolute favorite places. Been here too many times to count and every single time I have never been disappointed. Recently ordered the Spinach and Artichoke soup which was amazing. Other favorites of mine here include: the cuban sandwich, pastrami melt, turkey club, banana pepper mac and cheese soup, french onion soup, their cookies, I could go on and on. Their service is top notch as well. I was meeting a friend for lunch on our lunch breaks and we did not have much time. I called ahead with our orders and what time we would be there and when we arrived, our food was waiting for us at a reserved table, piping hot and fresh. 3 separate occasions: while trying to enjoy my over salted soup (clam chowder) and my flavorless tuna Melt with my co-worker, I overheard my server talking about how she has some sort of infection. Hope you didn't spread to your customers. Not only did we wait until she was done talking to her co-workers to receive our checks, but she also stopped to check her phone more than once before slowly making her way back to our table. Strike 1!! On the other occasion, I had the pleasure of getting the same server. Just saying, that same server smelled as if she had just smoked a joint before coming to my table. Aside from the service, my Service jobs require attention to your customers and not being intoxicated. The food that day was just not that better then before, my Chicken Salad Summer salad was anything but good. Wilted pieces of lettuce, dried out chicken salad and too much glaze. Strike 2 All I have to say is whoever sings those gross vulgar songs in the kitchen area, we can hear you out in the dinning room and this is a major turn off especially when children are around. Such a cute little cafe with a great atmosphere! Has a huge selection on their menu perfect for your lunch break! So many different sandwiches, wraps, salads, and soups... and it's all homemade! I kept hearing how great this place was-huge portions, delicious entrees & reasonable prices- so I decided to find out for myself. I went their for lunch with a friend on April 2nd and was disappointed!!!! It is very average. 1. the portions are average, you find the same sized portions at any other restaurant. 2. Prices were competitive. They were not worse or better than any other restaurant I've ever been to. 3. taste was fine...not nearly as delicious as it had been made out to be. It was your typical average tasting fare. I get the same taste at Bob Evans, Denny's or any other place. 4. The waitress didn't write any dollar amounts on checks! At the end of the meal she brought 2 checks to our table that just listed what we ordered! We had NO idea how much our bill was. When we told her about this, she took our receipts and said that she could ring them separately. She brought the receipts back with nothing but a total for each on the back of the each! this wasn't really helpful as I and most people use the tax to determine the tip. When I asked her about this she said it was too busy for her to write the prices on our checks when we ordered. Now at this point the place had cleared out so she could have then itemized the check for us, just like EVERY OTHER RESTAURANT IN THE WORLD DOES! When we were checking out at the cash register, I told the waitress that it would be helpful to have all items priced on the check including the tax she said, "I told you we were too busy for me to write the dollar amounts on the check." Really? I've eaten at restaurants all over the world that were MUCH BUSIER than Gateway Grill and Café was when I was there and have never gotten a check without the tax and cost of the food items listed. I should have looked at her and said, "Well that's too bad for you because I base my tip on the tax of the check," and then walked out with out a tip. I left her a tip and am sorry I did. I may go back again in the hopes of getting her as my server to see if she would refuse to write the dollar amounts again. read more
