A large restaurant with an even larger menu. This should give you a bit of trepidation but they pull it off reasonably well just up the road at the Old Salt, so I wasn't too leery on my first visit. Our meal started out well with great clam chowder and a very nice spinach salad, but things went downhill from there. The cornbread and rolls are nothing special, which shouldn't be the case when you have an on-site bakery. Our entrees were underwhelming, as the sesame encrusted haddock was merely ok (it would have been better if it were hot!) and the cedar plank salmon was glazed in a sauce whose sweetness is definitely undersold on the menu description. Sweet and salmon should only pass like two ships in the night. This was a collision. Lastly, attention all restaurants who want to put creme brulee on the menu. Make a decent one! This one was about 5mm thick with a massive dollop of whipped cream and cinammon sticks on top. Lose that stupid garnish, deepen your bowl just a bit, and put a decent shell on it! It was not a terrible dining experience, but the Old Salt does the same thing a bit better and it is just up the street, so I don't see myself going back to the Galley Hatch. read more

My date and I decided to head over to the Galley Hatch on a Saturday night. I was reluctant because the last lunch I had there a few years ago was quite pedestrian. But, this Saturday night, we sat by the fireplace. Our waitress was adorable and attentive. My glass of J. Lohr was lovely. Back to the Galley Hatch this weekend with my wife and in-laws. I had the steak and cheese sandwich with onion rings which was fine (B+) . They forgot to put the chicken teriyaki on my Mother-in-law's chicken teriyaki salad (D-) . For dessert, I had the 7-Layer brownie served with vanilla ice cream (as suggested on the menu) . The brownie was served cold (like rock hard cold) so it really didn't go soooo well with the ice cream (C-). My wife said the key lime pie was unremarkable (C). Bottom line: Abandon ship! read more

I was recently here with a group of 12 ladies for a bachelorette party. We had two waitresses on our table, one was Stephanie who was a pleasure. I was very pleased that they were willing and able to give us separate checks; this made the bill handling so much smoother! We got two orders of the Warm Pita Dip for the table and everyone raved about it. I ordered the Steak Tips for dinner, which were cooked correctly and delicious. I looked around at everyone's dishes, and can say that all of the portions were hearty. We didn't have room for dessert, but the bakery cases looked wonderful. The service was great. Food was alright. My salmon was overcooked. I do, however, have a major issue that the chef isn't creative enough to come up with his own recipes. A few of the new dishes on the menu were actually created by another chef that apparently doesn't deserve to get any credit. Shame on him. read more

Our first time at this place and definitely our last. We entered and we're greeted promptly. It was a Sunday afternoon (yesterday) around 230. We were seated among a room of maybe five other couples sitting down eating. We waited 19 min to be exact no waitress ever came. The table behind us had a waitress and the one in the next row also, you would think common courtesy would be for one of them to come over and apologize and tell us someone will be with us shortly but that never happened. So after the 19 min my family of four for the first time walked out of a restaurant. No one even notice we were leaving or said anything to us almost as though we didn't exist. I was going to confront the hostess and let her know as we left but unfortunately she was no where to be found either. This place has an odd little charm about it. Our server and hostess were very sweet and attentive. Looked as though it may be a popular spot with the locals. Food was excellent. My husband and I went to dinner during Hampton Restaurant Week. We had the appetizers,( salad and stuffed mushrooms) which we enjoyed. The entree was a sessame encrusted haddock on a bed of stir fried veggies. The veggies were frozen, the broccolli was still cold and soggy, and the sauce and crust, bland and uncomplimentary to the haddock. I had strawberry/rhubarb pie for dessert which was an unhappy ending to a lackluster meal. The crust was soggy and the filling too thick and gluey. I expected more during a week when restaurants want to showcase their businesses. We rarely go out for dinner and it was a real disappointment to be presented with such a inferior meal. Lived in Hampton for ten years, still waiting to discover the fascination with the sub par food that the Galley Hatch spoons out. They have an incredible wait staff and a great facility, but the quality of food has fallen dramatically. Tonight my wife and I decided to try the new lounge, and for the first time in my life, I sent the food back. Fried calamari was terrible! Grilled teriyaki salad was something straight out of a fast food restaurant! Greens were limp, chicken processed! Baked goods are still good but not sure if they even produce those! This place has some of the best lobster rolls around. Lots of lobster with just a little mayo, toasted buttered roll. Their more complex entrees are hit or miss, sometimes mediocre and sometimes good. The wait for a table here is usually shorter than other places nearby. Lovely view of ocean. Good coffee. read more

Where do I begin...arrived about 2pm New Years Day. Asked to be seated near fireplace, was told area not open. Gee....there were several tables occupied? Went to order meal (sirloin tips) and was told I couldn't have baked potato. Not available til 4pm. They wanted full price 22.95 ( no lunch special) but I couldn't get a baked potato!!! So I asked for mashed potato without garlic (don't like garlic). Was told no...so I settled for the rice pilaf. Asked for tips cooked med well. When I got my meal the tips were cooked medium at best! The rice pilaf was full of garlic flavor and the worst pilaf I've ever tasted. Next time I'll go down the street a few miles to the Outback....at least I can get a baked potato. The food here is excellent and one of my favorite places to eat. It doesn't matter what you get here as literally everything I've ever tried has been amazing. My personal favorite is the baked haddock though. Whatever they put in their topping is pure magic. Always great service as well. read more

Went with a big group and was told I wasn't allowed to have a separate bill when I asked for the check, even though we had asked for separate checks when we first sat down. Long chat with the manager, I finally got my check but overheard the waitress bad mouthing our table while signing my bill. Will not be back, poor service. read more

I'm so glad we decided to try this place for lunch. The location seems to be shared with Kay Cafe which definitely deserves a 4 1/2 Star review as well. Getting back to the Galley Hatch, I had an item (baked stuffed shrimp) from the lunch specials and let me tell you I nearly licked my plate clean. It's a meal I would definitely order again. The Galley Hatch used to be a guaranteed great place for a great meal with attentive service. I have been going there for over 25+ years and have now been more and more disappointed with the food and service. On a most recent visit, the prime rib was severely overcooked, medium rare is NOT, we'll done. My son's chicken fingers were also overcooked and dry, with burning evident on the breading, perhaps left under the heat lights too long while the rest of the order was completed? (This has happened the last two of three visits.) Timing of the meals seems to be lacking in the kitchen. The wait staff in the main dining area seemed to have to cover too large and area to be effective and attentive. Lastly, take out orders... A word of advice... Always check your order before leaving the restaurant. You order will consistently be MISSING something! Sadly, we've stopped doing "take out". Hopefully the Galley Hatch can start getting it right again! read more

Went to Tinos, the Greek restaurant in the Galley Hatch. Don't go hungry. They have a very limited menu. It is supposed to be Greek, but I couldn't tell. The portions were so small. The menu consists of a number of expensive small plates which would make a tapas restaurant seem like a feast. We ordered a cold squid plate which had 4 small squid rings for $9. I had a "bowl" of fish chowder which had 2 clams and one muscle plus a piece of potato in a tea cup of broth. The "large" plates run in the mid 30's. The waiter tried to upsell everything from drinks to the most expensive items on the menu. The ambiance was three TV screens behind a bar. We eat out on the Seacoast 2-3 times a week. This is the worst restaurant we have encountered in years of dining. read more

I used to go to the Hatch at least once a week, but a year or two ago the portions were reduced and the prices increased and it just wasn't worth it anymore. I used to get a smoked salmon appetizer that was really delicious. Also liked the seafood chowder a lot until some new chef messed with the recipe. We used to get burgers there sometimes -- fat and juicy and topped with blue cheese and red onion. That went off the menu, but you could ask for the blue cheese and red onion. Last time we did that, the burger was flat and not juicy, maybe 2/3 the size it used to be. Even the waitress, who we know from having been regulars, admitted she was a bit shocked by some of the portion reductions. read more

I love this restaurant I love the staff.....they treat me and my family as family, as for someone saying they don't have healthy meals? guess what? ask for it the way you want, they will customize anything for you, you just have to ask. I get the baked potato, 2 pieces of baked chicken and the veggie steamed on the soft side. These people know how to keep their customers happy, I wouldn't bother going anywhere else, its a waste of money. When I'm buying out, this is where i go and I'm from Newburyport and it's well worth the travel. I tip very well because my service has never been anything less than exceptional, it feels like home to me. I'm actually taking my Mom there tomorrow....girls day out and I'm gonna splurge. The staff is incredible and i want to make a shout out to everyone who makes that restaurant run smooth. The atmosphere........well let's just say, I was in a down mood when I went and the people who were joyously laughing and the staff clearly made me feel better. I don't know else to say...the quesadillas are awesome.....their soup of the day {I'm allergic to shellfish} is one of the best and when the front desk greets you, no matter what you are wearing, that is my home. We decided to check this place out and were less than impressed. In fact, we left there feeling like we had just wasted $60. Environment of the dining area felt like an old creepy church. Food was boring and gross - got the Asian chicken lettuce wraps for an appetizer and could not eat them. They were disgusting, the chicken tasted old. My husband got a pasta and chicken dish and had to spit a piece of rubbery chicken into his napkin, the lemon sauce was soupy and unpleasant. I got the kale salad with roasted vegetables..it literally had 9 tiny pieces of zucchini in it and 3 handfuls of kale. I think we are done with this restaurant. The prices have always been high, but because the food was good we were willing to pay them. Well, now the prices are even higher and the food quality has dropped...plus they have market pricing on steaks!!! We were there on Wednesday with friends who both ordered the filet. The expensive cuts of meat were so tough they both sent them back. They had to order new meals which of course arrived when we were nearly finished with ours. Plus, $9.29 for a simple Iceberg Wedge salad. My husband said that his Fisherman's Platter was just barely okay. We complained to the manager about the bad filets and although we were not charged for those returned meals we were not compensated in any way for the inconvenience and the ruining of our night out! read more

First things first: I highly recommend going here. My family was in the area and everyone was in the mood for something different, so we looked up the menu and saw lots of variety, so we went in. I was instantly charmed when I saw the built-in café and tasty-looking desserts. The mini bookstore in the lobby was very wierd, but easily forgotten about. Some reviews said the décor was outdated but I didn't get that, I would call it more "traditional" with some pretty murals. The waitress was pleasant, but not really exceptional. The good part started when we got out bread. The cornbread was great, very moist but also not crumbly which is a great feat. My Mom and Sister both got iced tea, which was clearly breed on site, so a check mark on that front. I got the lobster mac and cheese and it totally blew me away. I'm not a big fan of lobster, but it was the best mac and cheese I've ever had with gouda and a few other cheeses I don't really remember right now, but it was super flavorful and fresh tasting, and at a solid $20 it was a pretty good deal, especially because I had enough left over for lunch the next day as well. My sister was raving about her veggie pizza during the whole meal, and she too had plenty of leftovers. Deciding not to get a dessert was the hardest choice I've ever made in my life, but I figured that I had run the bill up enough ordering lobster, so I wold be more thrifty during my inevitable return. In an empty dining room, she sat a family with 2 VERY young kids in the booth next to us - when there were at least 24 other tables to choose from?! Grandma and I went to GH for breakfast; just for curiosity mostly. They do have a limited breakfast menu; microwave eggs and such. But, we don't see the point.
