We were happy to visit this incredibly popular bakery during the afternoon when we were able to snag an inside table on a chilly day. The French hot chocolate was sinfully delicious...essentially a mug of hot, melted chocolate in sipping form! We would have been happy to sample so many of their pastries or lunch options, but we restrained ourselves and just shared the lemon ricotta danish. The crust was buttery goodness, with a creamy, not-too-sweet lemony center. It's very small inside so with people standing in line and people waiting for the food, it felt kind of cramped. If there weren't so many people, I imagine it would feel cozy. I was so excited to try Elephantine Bakery today. Cheat code was to order ahead because we got there and the line was out of the door. Great sign! We were able to see a worker bringing food out to a seated guest and we picked the order up without waiting. I ordered the cinnamon roll and the rosemary focaccia bread. Both were amazing! The cinnamon roll was light and fluffy. I'm not the biggest fan of cream cheese frosting but it wasn't bad and didn't take away from it at all. The focaccia's flavor was amazing. It was everything! The size of it big enough to cut multiple pieces and share it with my husband. If we're able to come back I'd love to sit inside or out and try more items. There was constantly people coming and going and I applaud how the staff had a good flow, and promptly delivered to everyone. It was clean but small. There is one bathroom and it was well maintained too. Ordered a simple latter and an almond chocolate croissant ~ they were good with delicious light filling, which wasn't too sweets. The best part was the Egg calibir, which includes two poached eggs with sauce and a some sour cream and herbs. Egg cilbir was very good. I've never had them before but I really liked it. It's a poached eggs with yogurt/garlic mixture that you mix and use bread to dip and eat. My sister and I ordered pastries the day before, which was convenient and guaranteed our selection. We noticed there were some special weekend items, including a brown butter brownie and labor-intensive cinnamon roll. Additionally, Elephantine offers an Egyptian bread pudding, something I've never seen on a bakery menu. The instructions said to pick up from the counter. However, when my sister arrived for pick-up, no one acknowledged her at the counter for several minutes. Seeing how busy things appeared, she hopped in line and got her pastries that way. In addition to the pastries already mentioned, we tried a feta and honey danish, which is made with croissant dough. This was the crowd favorite with its sweet, salty, and buttery notes. The Egyptian bread pudding was tasty and worth trying if you like to experience something new. It too is made with croissant dough. The two specialty items--the cinnamon roll and the brown butter brownie--were the "womp womps" of the group. While the brownie was solid, I did not get any brown butter notes. Why advertise it as such if it's not prominent? As for the cinnamon roll, the cream cheese frosting is the best part. It's sweet and tangy. The roll itself is fine, and my biggest critique is that it needs more cinnamon filling. Between my overall experience and the Yelp and Google reviews, I'm surprised Elephantine gets as many five-star reviews as it does. It's a very good bakery, but it's not one I would return to or recommend to a friend. read more

This spot is a hidden gem in relation to the city, tucked back in an alley but DO NOT BE FOOLED. People know this is here, it is very well loved! Your favorites will sell out from the bakery and if you're looking for weekend breakfast get there at an early hour. There's only like 4 tables inside and maybe one or two outside, weather permitting. As well all the pastry is outstanding and head and shoulders above the best of the best. This place was just simply a revelation. We stopped in during a weekend trip for some baked treats to take home, based on all the rave reviews. A regular named Linda starting chatting with me and was simply gushing about their breakfast foods. The small menu, just a handful of dishes, looked good, but I just didn't realize HOW good until this local customer raved about it. Based on her testimonial alone, I decided, ok, we will eat here instead of running out to a diner as planned. GOODNESS am I glad Linda convinced me! First of all, as I was waiting at my table, she came over with a little prepared piece of sourdough with labneh and poached egg on top. "First bite!" she said sweetly as she handed me the first nibble from her own breakfast. Oh my gosh. It was SO epically delicious, I was immediately convinced to order exactly that, rather than the egg sandwich I had been eyeing. That garlic labneh was to die for, and I'll be thinking of it for a long time (writing this as we head back home, which is sadly numerous hours away from this gem!). And yes, we do have a bag full of baked treats to take back with us - couldn't resist! Elephantine is really special, y'all. The cozy atmosphere, the thoughtful and inventive menu items, the quaint alleyway where the bakery is located, the friendly staff - all of these add to how memorable this experience was.
