The people are not only willing but loving to give suggestions about which delicious pastry I should bring home to my wife, how decadent I should make my iced mocha, in which sandwiches are good. The food is excellent. I've been eating the cowgirl cuties as I call them or cowgirl cookies as they call them since I was a teen that is 20 years. While visiting Portsmouth, New Hampshire, I spoke to some staff at restaurants and the most popular recommendation for breakfast was the beach pea. My first inkling was to order the curry chicken salad sandwich but they don't serve sandwiches until 10:30 AM so I was pleasantly surprised by the delicious Bialy with goat cheese, roasted vegetables, sprouts and a tomato. I was walking around kittery looking for the best food and this came up in my yelp search. I took a quick 15 minute walk around and was overwhelmed with the number of options. Thankfully, the kind woman working behind the counter was nice enough to give me some recommendations. I knew I had to get the Fougasse because it was literally edible art. But then I wanted some little desserts to bring back to the wife and mother in law. I was recommended the sesame cashew bar and the lemon ginger snap cookies. Both of which I very much enjoyed! The Fougasse was my favorite, I'm a sucker for rosemary and olive oil studded bread.. The cashew bar was texturally interesting and very fun. I kept going back for more. I wasn't terribly impressed with the flavor of it overall, I thought it was a little on the sweet side and could have used a more nutty, deep flavor. Maybe some toasted sesame sticks would be a good addition to this? Or maybe just a less sweet shortbread crust that leans more into the nutty vs the sweet. Either way, I'm glad I tried it but I'd try something else next time. The lemon ginger snap was also great. I loved that the ginger snaps were crisp not soft baked. I do wish the lemon filling was much more lemony though, but that's just a preference of mine. Again, I'd try something else next time. Hopefully if you're reading this you caught the "next time" because there will be a next time! Beach pea is churning out quality and I'm here for it. Perfectly fine. We stopped in on a busy Sunday after shopping at a few nearby businesses in the are, looking for lunch. We had never been to Beach Pea Baking before but by the looks of the people sitting outside eating their lunches, good things were to be found inside. It was very busy and fast moving inside, there was not time to think or peruse and the place seemed to be filled with regulars who knew exactly what they wanted and in what way they wanted it. All of this is great IF you are a regular and are ready set GO when you get to the register. I would not consider myself a massive dawdler when ordering (most of the time) but wow, did I feel rushed. I got up to the counter and...hi...ill take a....tuna sandwich! My order was processed within seconds and the sandwich came out within a reasonable amount of time. It was ok. read more

My mom and I stopped in for a couple of salads at lunch. I ordered the harvest vegetable salad with chicken. There were roasted zucchini, carrots, mushrooms, and sweet potato with goat cheese and nuts. FANTASTIC!!! My mom got the apple grove salad and enjoyed hers too. Wishes the whole cashews were candied and cut into slivers or something like that. Two salads came to $31 total and came out within 10 minutes. After sampling $70 worth of breads, croissants, cookies, and even a sandwich in one day, I can say "What a fabulous bakery!" The croissants have a beautiful honeycomb crumb. Crispy on the outside and light and airy inside. Luckily, I grabbed the last raspberry croissant of the day. I can understand why they are so popular. The bit of jam is a perfect touch of sweetness. The ham and cheese croissant was delicious. My daughter ordered the Fresh Mozzarella, Basil, and Tomato sandwich. Served in a big, chewy baguette, it was a very filling sandwich. Even despite the fact that it's March, the tomato was very red and very thick. They don't skimp on the cheese either. She loved her sandwich so much, she wants me to return again tomorrow to buy her another. The cookies are big ass cookies. They're sold for $3+ which is pretty standard for bakery cookies, but these cookies are ginormous. There are cakes in the cooler that I still want to try. This is clearly a local favorite because it was packed on Monday at noon!! They have a great selection of sandwiches and salads as well as breads, of course! We decided on the roasted vegetable salad with goat cheese, the turkey and avocado sandwich, and the everything bialy with basil pesto spread. All three of these were delicious!! Fresh ingredients, healthy, and satisfying. We also had the breakfast bar which was great with coffee. It's like a roll with nuts and cranberries. My absolute favorite thing was the fogasse...it's an oily herby bread kinda like a mix of focaccia and ciabatta. That thing made me say Whoa! when I took a bite. Coordinating with Lydia was an a complete breeze, even when I found out some of our emails were going to my spam inbox, she was so kind and patient. We were in Portsmouth and we always stop at the same bakery (Elephantine) . But this morning we needed to leave early and our usual bakery was not opening until 8am. So we stumbled upon Beach Pea Baking. Oh my goodness, I am so glad we did!!! We arrived at 7:25am and there were several people lined up waiting for the door to open. I thought "This looks promising". When they opened and we walked in, the amazing smell of freshly baked goods overwhelmed us. We tried plain croissant, almond and ham and cheese. All equally delicious and each tasted like more. Chocolate chip cookie - super good too. So sorry that I do not have any photos, but everything was so delicious that taking a photo of it was last thing on my mind :) Next time in Portsmouth - we will have some decisions to make or perhaps, we will stop at both bakeries! read more

What am I missing here? Every time I come here I feel robbed and underwhelmed and yet I keep trying. This is the last time. I ordered a chicken salad sandwich and paid $10 what I got was a doll house size sandwich with maybe a tablespoon of chicken salad, one leaf of lettuce, and one slice of cucumber. Great fresh bread selection and pastries! Get here early because the breads do run out, but they're so worth it. The pastries are also excellent, my favorite being the raspberry scone, which is more moist than I expected, and so delicious. I came in to buy a sandwich which they don't make until 10:30, but the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful with suggestions. Luckily for me they have pre-made sandwiches in the fridge, along with chicken salad and other items. I had their tuna sandwich on there French means white bread, which came with beautifully sliced beef, steak, tomatoes, and perfectly green lettuce, very little mayo and little celery a little pepper perfect. My sister had the chicken curry sandwich with sliced avocado, tomato, lettuce, and onion. She said it was spectacular. They also have a cooler with meals to go in it. They all looked pretty good. I went to Beach Pea with two people for what we hoped would be a nice relaxing lunch. as we've all been there in the past. Two of us ordered sandwiches which contained chicken, the other person had a salad w/o any meats. My friend and I (both had sandwiches) ended up with food poisoning; she had to go to the Emergency Room at Portsmouth Hospital at 2 am because she was so ill. I struggled ALL weekend and was deathly ill too. Today, after finding out my lunch companion was so I'll and had food poisoning confirmed by the hospital, I called Beach Pea and politely asked to speak to the manager. I was to she wasn't available or she was too busy to take the call. I explained to the person who answered the phone the serious nature of my call. She told me to go to there website and lookup their email address and send an email. She was able to provide the email address to me or the manager's name. I did inform her that I will also notify the Kittery Board of Health as this is a serious public health issue. read more

Cute atmosphere of the place, but they didn't have the option to "build your own sandwich" as advertised on their website available, so I had to modify something on their menu to fit my dietary restrictions. The girl looked at me puzzled, I mean it's 2022 are we really shocked by people with dietary issues? I'm used to it but it was a bit more difficult here as there was nothing that was on the more plain side. I had the #2, but I can't eat certain things on the sandwich so I just asked for the turkey , avocado and regular mayo and left the rest off. Seeing as I left off several of the items on the sandwich, I would've hoped that they added more turkey to fill out the sandwich more and it was practically all bread. My spouse had the #4 which he stated was good, but he was annoyed that his sandwich was also small for the price (and his was not modified). $30 for two sandwiches & two iced teas. The bread was very tough and chewy on both of our sandwiches. I wouldn't have minded the price tag if the sandwiches were more robust. this is 3 stars for the carrot cake. i paid over $50 for what was predominantly icing. very disappointing. the cake itself was delicious, if you could only find it! Massive amounts of frosting in the middle. Weighs so heavy! And all cause its thick frosting, that is not even cream cheese (or at least that i snot what it tastes like). I would advise against the carrot cake, or any of their cakes, really. The cookies and little deserts are delicious. Be prepared to spend LOTS of money here. read more
