Made a pit stop here on our way to Portland. We'd come here years ago for just the bakery so wanted to check out the pizzeria after seeing so many great reviews. Plenty of lot parking so that's always a plus. We walked in on Friday for lunch and it was fairly full but we were seated quickly and orders taken. Very rustic ambience and service was quick. Unfortunately, the food was just ok and didn't knock my socks off. We ordered the Brussel sprouts, pork belly steam buns and the margherita pizza. Brussels were fried nicely but the ginger sesame sauce was very strong and I would probably preferred the sauce on the side. Pork belly buns were just ok as well. We were here for the pizza so were excited to try it - pizza unfortunately was just ok as well. Food is subjective and always based on preference so please take this review with a grain of salt - pizza was a bit doughier than I'd like - I prob should've asked for it to be well done if even possible and the sauce tasted heavy on the oregano - not something I'm a big fan of. All in all - not bad but not great. I just had such high expectations - maybe a different pizza might've changed my mind. But def don't skip out on going next door to try some samples and get some bread - the bread is amazingly delicious. read more

My wife was visiting a friend near by and my brother in law recommended we go here for pizza. Well it was a good recommendation for many reasons. First one was that there is plenty of parking. And plenty of outdoor seating for when the weather allows that. When we first got in the hostess told me it would be about 10 minutes, but we were welcome to sit and look at the menu till they called us for the table. It was only a 5 minute wait and at first I was surprised we couldn't just be served at the large high table at the entrance where we were seated and waiting which looked like it was for several parties or even one large party, but even when we were leaving that table was empty so I guess they either save it for a very large party or just for people to sit at while they wait for their table like we did. Either way we didn't wait long so that didn't bother me as I thought it might at first. When we were seated, service was extremely fast, so fast that at first I thought they just want us out. :p but they are just that good. And our waitress brought me my soda without ice which many servers forget and would get me a refill before I was even done with the soda and even asked if we wanted water as soon as we sat and bright us some. When the food arrived (which as I mentioned was extremely fast even though the place was packed), everything was amazing. We started with shrimp and the Brie which were in the specials. Shrimp was fresh and you could really tell, and the Brie had a nice assortment of apple slices, almond slices, bread and cranberries making it feel like you were also having a healthy meal with your pizza and fried food :p. We had the truffle mushroom pizza and the only complaint my mother had was that it had onions and rocket which she didn't like on the pizza, but that was her fault for not reading it on the menu as we could have easily just asked for it not to have that. She just saw truffle, mushrooms and ricotta cheese and said im having that. Which was what I wanted too but I was ok with everything else too. Well we both enjoyed it and I even took the left over pizza to have for dinner later :). I don't live nearby, but it is a place I would recommend to others who go by there and when we come near here again I know where to go eat if I'm in the mood for pizza. The only complaint is that it was too loud for us, almost felt like a sports bar without the sports tvs playing everywhere, however they do have take out as well, so you do have that option too if you live nearby. read more

My wife and I were looking for a spot to eat at along Route 1 as we were heading north back towards home and this was our choice. Technically we came here a little off five years ago during the middle of you know what was happening in 2020. I had forgotten to do a review back then so with revisiting I can now do a review. I will lastly mention during our 2020 visit we split a pizza and enjoyed it. This visit we opted for things other than pizza so don't worry for those not interested in pizza, they have lots of options still. Drink wise they have everything you'd expect for soda, tea, lemonade, etc then beer wise they had around 20 on draft with some cans too. As well as plenty of wines and cocktails for fans of those too. Then food wise they have you guessed it pizza with roughly 15 styles they chose with plenty of toppings for you to make your own if wanted. Price wise I will say the majority of pizzas were priced $24-$26 which I thought was a little pricey but expected for a tourist heavy spot on Route 1. Otherwise food wise you could pick from apps; wings, tenders, hummus, etc. Meals such as Mac n Cheese, Tacos (fish, brisket), salads, and lots of sandwiches and burgers. Along with all their usual menu offerings you should get a page with the current specials too. This is where my wife and I grabbed the fried mozzarella for starting app which were delicious. Great taste with a perfect cheese pull! Then entree wise my wife got their Turkey BLT and I got their Meatball Grilled cheese. I recommend trying a sandwich if you don't choose pizza especially if you haven't tried their delicious bread. My sandwich used their soft sourdough and my wife's used their savory cranberry bread. We both were extremely happy with our food. Grab some of their bread in the next door company store before or after your meal, which I also reviewed that. Service was very good. The hostess was friendly and our wait for our table was less than estimated and they text you when it is ready. Food wise the app came out in no time and shortly after starting in on that our sandwiches showed up. No complaints at all service wise. Ambiance wise it feels like a restaurant with some rustic feels to it. It was closed already but if you come here in the summer the highlight would definitely be sitting outside enjoying the nice weather. We stop here regularly on our way home from Orono visiting our son. I have noticed prices vs. portion size getting worse over time. We always try to sit at the bar so service is generally fast. It is incredibly noisy in there, I think it's the nature of the building as well as the fact that there are often many children being loud. Drink options are great-many choices for different tastes. We split a small Greek salad ($9) and a small date and sopresatta pizza ($26). To me the amount of food was sad for the cost. Also there was supposed to be hot honey on the pizza but it only tasted sweet, maybe they just put plain honey. The pizza is good -not spectacular- and for a $26 dollar pizza I would rather it was spectacular. We will probably be back, it's not awful by any means. Just over priced. read more

Had to wait on New Years Day with my grandsons...new system in place ..they phone when your table is ready . We were seated after a short wait . Drinks brought promptly. Waitress was attentive and accommodating . Pretzel appetizer with cheese sauce is great! Kids had chicken tenders and Mac and cheese. My entree was great.. no complaints! Been driving past this spot every time we hit up ogunquit beach and the kittery outlets. I've seen their bread in supermarkets, specifically Whole Foods so their breads should be pretty solid. I got the haddock sandwich and it was a nice solid sandwich in a delicious brioche bun. Maybe it could've used a little more butter and sear but that's ok. The fish was a good sized piece of haddock, accompanied with delicious French fries (thing wedges), lightly pickled cucumbers and a tartar sauce that is heavy on the dill. I did not feel terrible after the meal because everything tasted they were from scratch. In one of the haddock sandwiches, there were some bones which dropped a star from the review. We also tried the date pizza which was pretty yummy. The salami is not your typical deli counter salami. It also tasted very clean/less processed which is something I really appreciate. read more

Another amazing trip to When Pigs Fly! We stopped in and found out there was about a 20 minute wait which was no problem for us. Great food is worth the wait! We were sat within 15 minutes so even better. We were thrilled to see fried mozzarella on the specials menu, the last time we had their fried mozzarella we swore it was the best we've ever had; this remains true! We were heading to upstate Maine and decided to stop into Kittery for some lunch. The when pigs fly pizzeria was not our first choice, we tried several spots and learned that there was a pretty good sized power outage in the area. When pigs fly was open so we stopped in. It was really good!! The first good sign is that they had pliny the elder on tap. When you see this beer out you just have to get it and it was delicious. We had the Bruschetta pizza which was very good. It was topped with olive oil, garlic, basil, mozzarella, sliced tomatoes, romano, and balsamic reduction. I adore when pigs fly bread, so when I found out they had a pizzeria, I knew I had to check it out. I tried their soppresetta and medjool honey option, which was a good balance of sweet and savory. The eggplant Parmesan pizza was also good, though I wish there were more of the eggplant Parmesan wedges for the size of the pizza. Wish those wedges came as an appetizer. Crust was very thin and the tomato sauce leaned heavily to the sweeter side. Service is efficient. They offer a Wednesday night happy hour with $10 pizzas if you happen to be in the area. Stopped in for a quick bite after first visiting the bakery next door! Thought I was going to have pizza, but there were some other interesting sandwich & bowl options. I decided on their new Asian-inspired beef bowl. The steak was tender and there was plenty of rice and veggies. The sauce was a tad bit salty but nicely ginger-forward. My friend had the fried haddock sandwich with tartar sauce & house fries. The batter was extremely crisp and light. The fish was fluffy and flakey. Reportedly the best fish sandwich consumed in a long time. I enjoyed the fries which were flat like chips but more French fry-like. We always love stopping in this cute place when pigs fly. They have two places side by side: the restaurant and the bread store. (We love both.) Indoor/ outdoor seating is available for the restaurant. We ordered takeout this time. They also have an outdoor bar-type area with tables in front of the stores. It was dark but very lit up. We called in an order for pizza and sat outside the restaurant at the picnic tables. There was plenty of parking - and the pizza, as always, was enjoyable. Went here the other day for a lunch with the nice weather. Thai place has a huge outdoor section with a bar right there! They have lots of items other than pizza too. Service was okay and we didn't have to wait at all. We got the fried mozzarella wedges, the lobster roll, and a pina colada. The mozzarella wedges had a good crust and were seasoned great! The lobster roll was a good size and tasted pretty good overall. I like mine with mayo. For $28 it was an amazing size and is worth it. The fried that came with it were surprisingly really great too. The pina colada I got was also a surprise to me. I was craving it for some reason and wasn't sure how it was going to be. To my surprise it was very refreshing and just what I wanted. This is a very loud restaurant, even when there aren't a lot of people in there-something about the acoustics. Nonetheless, I had hopes for Neapolitan pizza. I was greatly looking forward to the sweet shrimp, but that apparently was off the menu and the menu that posted on yelp is not accurate . We had to wait over 10 minutes for our table, even though they were empty tables in the restaurant, but that is pretty typical for most restaurants these days so I wouldn't really hold that against them. We waited a long time to be served, which was disappointing. We ordered the bruschetta as an appetizer and two pizzas . The bruschetta was absolutely delicious. However, it was cold, which was very offputting. I'm sure I would have loved the dish had been heated up or put under the boiler for a minute or two. Because of this, I was pretty disappointed. Onto the pizza.... I didn't find it to be anything special. Normally when I order genuine Neapolitan pizza the crust is thick and fluffy at the edges and has a wonderful deep sourdough flavor.. that was not the case here. I didn't find it any different than most other pizza places, and for that I was disappointed. The drinks come in small mason jars, which pretty much disappeared after three sips. When Pigs Fly is a cute neighborhood spot that's great for everyone, including the pupper. The Restaurant - The outdoor seating over the summer months is a joy. The service was a bit slower than if you had eaten inside as all the food does need to be carried out but the trade off on a good weather day is worth it. We started with a caesar salad and the crispy brussels sprouts. The sprouts which were huge and delicious and the salad similarly sang. For pizza we got the eggplant and basil ricotta pizza which featured yummy fried eggplant pieces on pillowy ricotta dabs. The Bakery / "company store" - The bakery is nice with curious finds and rotating / limited time flavors. The chocolate bread was recommended but they were sold out so we walked away with an apple bread and a German sourdough. Overall the breads are good and fresh but also very dense. A bonus if you visit on a Saturday is that they bring in donuts from another bakery and we're similarly high quality. read more

A very loud atmosphere that is very cluttered. There were kids everywhere that were just being far too loud. I could not hear nor speak to the waitress for the life of me due to it. The only seating for large parties available is on high tables which prevented my elderly grandmother from being able to easily sit down. Other then that, the place is very nice, the bathrooms are very aestetic. The waitress was nice when I was able to hear her except she split water everywhere and failed to clean it up. The menu is very limited especially when you are looking for dishes that are not pizza. Made a quick stop at When Pigs Fly on our way to a show in Hampton Beach. While we've eaten loads of their bread, we haven't been to their restaurant. We sat outside on their nice picnic tables and enjoyed the summer afternoon. Our server was quick to seat us and took good of us. When one of our sandwiches didn't come out as ordered, she was quick to get it fixed. My meatball grilled cheese was really tasty (I left off the hot peppers). My partner's Turkey BLT came out on the wrong bread, but once it was fixed, it was great. The bacon was thick and smoky! Plus there was live music while we ate! What a great spot! read more

We have eaten at When Pigs Fly several times. It's always been yummy. One time - somehow my fried chicken sandwich didn't get added to the order. They made it as quick as they could and I think they took it off the bill. Luckily - my kids shared their pizza with me so I had a few bites of the sandwich and then took it to go. WOW. My husband and I were both blown away by this place for more than one reason. First, there's a ton of parking and the beer menu is phenomenal. Second, the kale salad was HUGE and the pizza was delicious. I think I've put off writing this review because my husband and I have wanted to visit again since the day we visited. It's that good. The beer menu is crazy good if you like high quality, hard to find beer. You'll find beers on draft here you won't find even in bottles/cans anywhere else in Maine. When I visited they had Hill Farmstead, Fore Quarters, Lawson's Finest Liquid, etc. I got the Lawson's Sip of Sunshine with grapefruit limited release and my husband got the Fore Quarters IPA. Both great beers from Vermont. For food we shared the kale salad and took half of it home to get another meal each from. This was a lovely sharable table salad (would feed at least 4 people) with lots of texture and nutrients. For pizza we tried the chicken, pesto, bacon,spinach pie which was incredible. I loved the dough! It was doughy enough in the right places, not crunchy and definitely had a sourdough flavor. If it's not obvious by now, we want to go back.
