We decided to try this local butcher shop and deli since we've heard great things about it. We decided to try their sandwiches today but will be back to try their meat as it looked fresh and high quality. They also have a selection of ready to go meals and sides and beer. We ordered two of the cold sandwiches and they were both delicious. We also tried some of their smoked marrow bones for our dogs. Our dogs loved the bones. This place gets pretty busy so be prepared to wait. Otherwise, definitely worth the visit. read more

One went over and she started chatting with the deli guy, the other went out back, briefly, comes back out and doesn't acknowledge me. I wait, still nothing. He makes no eye contact. I am standing right there in front of the case. Can't miss me. He finally looks over, doesn't ask if I need help, until I say. "can I get some steak tips?". Got my tips, guy ringing at register, not even a hi or hello. Says $31.48. Run my card, asks if I want a receipt. I say yes, and he is so put out that he has to print me a receipt. It's been a lifetime since I've been into Carl's Meat Market and now I remember why. It is so unorganized it's not.even funny. I was waiting in line at the deli for 10 minutes with no help, i was desparate, so i patiently waited!! People were cutting me in line. It took a customer to let me know you have to get in the line towards the back left hand side of the shop. At this point I had had it. This woman got in my face started yelling at me telling me saying "I had to stand in the main line" as she flung her free piece of Prosciutto around. First of F Off lady!! Second, an employee cannot have the decency to say something. This place has always been a disaster. Plus no A/C in a butcher shop ‍ Needless to say I left, i wasnt going to spend my time standing in line for god knows how long. I will never, ever go to this shit show of a place ever again. This is my stop when I need food but didn't have time to eat before work or I was just to lazy to get something. This meat market is deli, nightly dinner stop, and a great sandwich shop. I have eaten here about 4 times and each sandwich I had was good. The customer service is great too. The workers are all friendly and remember the regulars pretty quickly. I also tried their cold section of pastas and it is only ok. I think my favorite sub so far is the pastrami bomb. The sandwiches are great but they are no vegetables in it so I have to eat a salad to offset the meat and bread. Overall, a great place to have on the way to work! read more

Best deli around the Portsmouth/kittery area. Really nice people in there and very sanitary/quality food. I get a 10 inch sub almost everyday for lunch because it's very good quality and also it's cheaper than McDonald's (around $10 for a filling meal). I will never be going back to McDonalds because of Carls. They bless you with there food will be going back everyday! read more

Kittery has 3 great grab-and-go food spots conveniently located next to one another. Carl's is not to be missed. They have high quality meat products (including a variety of pre-marinated chicken), pre-made meals and salads, and custom-order sandwiches. Normally I only order the first 2 things I listed, but on this last visit I tried the sandwiches. Wowee. Great flavor, great value, very reasonably priced. I ordered a $9.99 10" cranberry chicken salad sandwich which I'm convinced was at least a foot long, and a $7.99 grilled Reuben. They do not skimp on their ingredients. Great location with plenty of parking. Everything was clean and well organized. They have a great selection of different foods including pasta salads, ham salad, etc. We bought a steak and cheese sub and an Italian sub. The Italian was packed with so much meat that I took some off and will save it for another sandwich. The steak was not chewy or tough. Both sandwiches were good. Great place to stop to take something home to cook at home, also. Just to forewarn you....don't go 11-12 or 2-4 if you are in a rush. We were there at 1 and had no issues. Those times are when the shipyard employees go to lunch and get out of work. Lots of traffic! Now I know why Carl's is a popular location for the shipyard. read more

This butcher shop is simply amazing, the meats are fresh and lean and taste absolutely amazing. I have been ordering subs as of late and they pack quality meat/Vegs on as requested and the buns/bread is fresh and tasty. I will be ordering a few Cheeseburgers today and will report after but I am sure they will be out if this world. Know if I can convince them to make milkshakes, Carls would probably become a chain. Only issue I have ever had there is the register employee, she seems to want to lecture you on the words you say, told the management she may cause me to go elsewhere but she might be family so who knows. The food is amazing. Inconsistent at times, but usually delicious. Customer service is less than to be desired. We usually order over $100 of sandwiches and sides every week. You would think we would be a consistent, faithful customer base that they would like to keep, but I think they could care less. They consistently don't answer the phones to take orders or pick up and immediately and hang up. I have worked in the take out restaurant industry and my co-worker's family owned a successful restaurant in York for years. My boss would be firing people if they ignored potential business because it's "too busy". My co-worker said the same for his restaurant. I guess Carl's is ok with whatever business they get and whatever they will lose out on from a large group of people who won't go here for sandwiches or anything else ever again, as well as relay this message to all their family and friends. read more

Ordered sandwiches for lunch with a group of coworkers today and while I can't speak for the store itself or the service, since it was a takeout order picked up by someone else, I can say that the sandwich was absolutely delicious! I had the Ranger, which is a hot roast beef sandwich with melted mozzarella cheese on a garlic seasoned sub roll with a side of au jus for dipping. The roll and the au jus were my favorite parts of the meal, but everything about it was delicious! The only downside for me was that the beef was a tiny bit on the rare side for my taste, but since I realize most people prefer it that way, I more or less expected it and wasn't particularly bothered by it. I would definitely go back to try more of the menu based on this experience! read more

I travel to Portsmouth NH occasionally for work and have had this establishment on my list to try for a long time but have not had an opportunity to stop in until today. Pros: Great, fresh and extensive product!! As an unrepentant meat eater, this place is like Disneyland! I ordered the Barbarian sandwich which consisted of roast beef, pastrami, bacon, veggies and spicy mustard. Holy crap it was awesome!! It was packed full of meat at a very reasonable price!! This place is a definite 5 star place, except........ Cons: This is my first visit so maybe I just got them on a bad day.....but, the service was cold, impersonal and certainly inattentive. I was new and not sure where to order since it is a full device deli, butcher and a lunch spot. The guy behind the counter was quick with the snarky comment when I misread the menu and asked for the 7" sub when it was actually 8".... sorry! I waited for quite awhile as I watched the sandwiches come out of the kitchen. Judging by who was before me and received their sandwiches, I saw what I was sure was my sandwich come to the pass through. I watched it and waited. A gentleman wandering around behind the counter asked if I was waiting for a sandwich and I said yes. I nudged my head towards the pass through hoping to let him know that I thought my sandwich was ready. He walked away and proceeded to spend the next 3-5 minutes walking around aimlessly. Finally, he wandered back in the direction of my sandwich, picked it up and called my name. He lobbed my sandwich on the counter and said, "here's your sandwich ". I responded, " I know, it has been sitting there for five minutes." No comment from him as he walked away. Seriously? No "thank you"? "Sorry for the wait"? Shop at Carls 3-4 times a week. Normally very pleased. I bought a simple large size container of Ham Salad (with a use by date of 3/12/23) and it was very different than usual. The grind was so fine an such little relish it looked almost like tuna. Result was "very bland". Hopefully this isn't the new normal. I love visiting this area for work but only get here a few times a year. I was looking to buy a sub to eat while watching Monday night football. Carl's has a very friendly staff and a solid micro beer selection. There were many locals stopping in to buy meats (all the steaks and marinated meats looked great). Then, scoot next-door to Golden Harvest, which has superb produce, cheeses, and wines. It's a one-two punch of foodie excellence that can't be beat. Will it cost you more than shopping at Market Basket? Yes. But excellence ain't cheap. I first went to Carl's in 1986 and I keep coming back, because, and I don't know how they do it, they offer a far better quality of meats then anyone else in the area. They also offer locally-grown meats. I just had a Maine farm grass-fed delmonico from there. Was it tough, like they usually are? Nope. Tender and great beefy flavor. They have beef, chicken, pork, lamb, some game, their own marinaded meats, their own sausages, their own bacon, great hot sandwiches, high-quality deli meats, and a wide offering of local craft beers. They've been operating since 1941, which tells you something about how good they are. There is a protocol, though. When you go in, go to the left and get in line. Don't stand in the middle of the place, staring, with your thumb up your ass. Then you will file by the meat case and one of the friendly, knowledgeable staff will help you. They are experts on all things carnivorous. Just do us all a favor, if you're one of those persnickety types that needs to know the biography and lineage of the hog that gave you this bacon, keep your dumbassed questions to a minimum and don't hold up the line. I was inspired to write this review when I saw that that the first thing that pops up on Yelp is a complaint about rude service. Here's a pro tip: be nice. I live just up the road from Carl's and it's my go-to butcher; great selection of meats, and the staff is always happy to custom-cut a steak or a chop to a desired thickness, or suggest cooking techniques. Wonderful people. Many years ago I was on St. John's writing a guide book on the U.S. Virgin Islands, and after a couple of weeks there I asked the woman who sold me coffee and a newspaper each morning what was up with the islanders' infamous reputation for being rude, since she was so pleasant? "You come here each day", she replied, "you wish me good morning, ask how I am doing, and you say 'please', and 'thank you'. Of course I am happy to see you, and I am pleasant too. Many tourists aren't like that, and we sometimes respond likewise." My own now-grown children who've travelled with me over the years have observed, and I hoped learned, that our transactions with ticket agents, car rental clerks, even TSA guards, have almost always (there are always a few jerks having a bad day) been friendly and smooth because, as I pointed out to one of my kids when he mentioned it, I treat others with the same politeness I'd like to receive. Great little place to get meat and beer. They have a selection of a variety of meats some marinated and others not. You can grab deli meats or have them make you a sandwich. There is a freezer section with some frozen meats and kid friendly food like chicken nuggets. They have a variety of bread, pickles, chips etc. Does your dog need some good bones, yep they have that too! We grilled some of their pre marinated chicken and steak and it was excellent! They have a good selection of craft beers too. They even had a variety of gluten free ones. Everyone who works here is super nice and helpful and it's a very popular spot! read more

Their sandwiches are fantastic and generous! The butcher shop is great too. Their boneless pork chops are so tasty that we eat them regularly and serve them every time we have company. Stopped in here on our way out of Maine because the butcher shopped we originally wanted to go to was closed since it was Sunday. Carl's Meat Market was open and he some great reviews so we figured we'd give it a try. They were pretty busy and from what I observed most of the people coming in were getting deli sandwiches so I decided to get one called the Carl's Barbarian (pastrami, corned beef, roast beef, Swiss cheese and spicy mustard). There were lots of subs that looked really tasty but I had to make a quick choice since the place was pretty busy. I also picked up some prepared chicken wings (BBQ and Buffalo) as well as some various meats. There was a reasonably large selection of fresh meats to choose from but the deli meats were more limited. If I wanted deli meats I would probably head over to the local Market Basket for a wider selection. The prices for everything seemed comparable to a lot of other butcher shops. With all that being said I don't know that I would go back. The other reviews talking about less than friendly staff are accurate. The man who waited on me didn't crack a smile once. I missed the sign indicating that there was a line (the line wasn't obvious due due the limited customers allowed in because of COVID) and the two men that were behind the counter made eye contact with me repeatedly but just kept ignoring me as opposed to politely directing me to the line. As a result, I wasted almost 10 minutes standing in front of the counter while other customers were served. This also meant that other customers ended up having to wait outside unnecessarily since only 10 people at a time are allowed inside. They also don't seem to offer any direction to their customers. I saw a few people standing around and then get barked at that they should be waiting outside for their sandwich order. How would they ever know that without being told? So far we've tried the Carl's Barbarian sub which was jammed pack with meat had good flavor but really should be one of their heated subs instead of it defaulting to a cold sub and we tried their chicken wings which were super bland and rubbery. In conclusion, if friendly, polite staff is important to you, then you may want to pass on this place. However if you just want a creative sub that will fill you up or some stuff from the butcher shop and you don't care if the staff isn't terribly personable then definitely give this place a try. read more
