My husband and I stopped into Maine Meat on a whim and we are so glad we did! We picked up a bone in ribeye steak, condensed truffles, chicken breast and their house made kilbesa. The steak was absolutely gorgeous and truly deserved an award. It had gorgeous marbling throughout and was massive in size. The only downside was it was a bit expensive BUT 1000% worth it. All of that being said the kilbesa was the best purchase. Absolutely out of this world amazing! We both agreed it was the best kilbesa we've ever had!! I found a way to cook steaks that is the best I've tried. Preheat oven to 275F, just before placing the steak on a rack of some kind and in the oven season with salt. NO PEPPER YET! Cook it for about 30-40 minutes for medium rare then place it in a hot cast iron pan to search maybe 1 minute each side. Add a slab of butter, some garlic cloves crushed with the palm of your hand and few sprigs of Rosemary. Ladle the sauce over the steak for a minute or two then let it rest for about 5. This is a really cool butcher shop. Everything is locally sourced and there's probably no place where you can feel better about having carnivorous tendencies. The guy behind the counter steered the conversation away from the word "organic" but the difference was lost on me. Maine Meat is also a relatively pricey place with $10/pound pork chops and ground beef being the least expensive things I saw. I went for the Kalbi Ribs because they looked really cool and were supposed to be good to grill. The meat had plenty of flavor but unfortunately it were ridiculously tough and hard to eat. We had talked about various marinades and how to grill them but it didn't really work out. There are some other things that look like they'd be fun to try but I'm not likely to find out because there are butchers closer to home that I've had such good luck with. I'm giving them 4 stars because it's a good looking shop full of good looking meat, and conversations with people who live close make me think that my experience wasn't typical. I wish I could say my experience at Maine Meat was wide and varied but from my very first order, I've been hooked. A rib eye, a NY strip and 1/2 a dozen lamb loin or blade chops (depending on whats in) has made our family happy on so many occasions. I'm not sure you could make anything but a delicious meal from these products, and the staff are helpful, prompts and friendly. I ordered 8 filet mignons for a dinner party last night and they were beyond extraordinary! Perhaps it was the dry-aging, but they were so tender that my knife glided through the meat like a hot knife through butter. The taste of the filet was so flavorful that it was perhaps THE BEST piece of meat that I have ever eaten, and today I received thank you texts from my guests who all commented on how amazingly delicious the filets were. When "the Best Steak Ever" Is Not an Exaggeration and believe me, I know from exaggeration. My VA. mother was the queen of "that is the BEST thing I have ever put in my mouth." We drove up last week (right next to Portsmouth, ~ an hour north of Boston) for a rare culinary hat trick- lunch at Anju Noodle Bar and meat shopping from the next door MEat shop followed by noodling around and dinner at Black Trumpet. Inspired to go to MEat by an earlier CH post , we bought a number of their (all local farms)meats and house-made sausages; and this one organic bone-in ribeye steak- dry aged by them 32 days- we really splurged on (WholeFoods level prices.) We wood grilled it tonight, and i felt compelled to tell you. First of all, the aroma. The aroma told us that we had never had anything like this before. And I can't find words to describe the flavor- just that it was robust and very clean, like cedar. Maybe one of you will taste it and be able to describe it. We happened to be in the Portsmouth area one weekend, stumbled across a Yelp review for MEat, and decided to give them a call. Not only did they know what it was, but they said they had some curing in the basement and would bring it upstairs for us by the time we got there! While driving back from white water rafting in northern Maine, we stopped in Kittery to eat at Robert's Maine Grill (also great) and I noticed this most excellently reviewed butcher shop. So we drive out of our way but OMG was it worth it! We only bought bacon and sausages (Sujuk, cilantro-lime, green onion) I guess because it seemed like the camping food we had just been eating. The meats were AMAZING! The bacon was some extraordinary combination of sweet and salty, and we ate it for breakfast. But then, for lunch, we sautéed the sausages in the bacon grease. I added some sautéed onions and peppers and basil and it honestly is one of the best meals we have ever eaten, all because the sausages are just absolute perfection. The flavors of the sausages are just amazing, really beyond words. The only sad part is that we don't have anything from Maine Meat for dinner. I wish we weren't 286 miles away because I would surely go back and try more stuff. Oh, and the beer selection was excellent as well. Yelpers, go to this meat store! read more

Here's my carnivorous philosophy: Eat less meat, of the best quality, and know where it comes from. I am fortunate to live in a community with two butcher shops (and its a small town!) Since Maine Meat came to town it is my standard. The meat is fresh (unless it is expertly aged!), its locally sourced and I have not eaten a single thing that has not been totally delicious. It's affordable to me because I don't expect, or want, to eat meat every day. Plus the owners are superb community members and will introduce you to cuts you've never heard of along with ways of prepare them. If you are passing through town you have to check them out...you will not be able to go back to lesser quality meat. (by the way S.R....that is a funny review you posted. Not about the quality of the goods but about an exchange you witnessed. Knowing the owners I find it hard to believe. Also I assume all the folks from our Naval base who purchase there and have good rapport- which I have witnessed- find them patriotic enough. And frankly creating a business that supports the local economy and directs money to our regional farms rather than overseas meat producers is a form of patriotism I can eagerly embrace. But no worries, you are entitled to your stance. I won't go to businesses that display Trump signs...so I guess we all have our lines in the sand!) read more

Great meat, yes... but... really slow service and not very accommodating. Lots of excuses because "everything is sourced locally" (and there's more demand than they can handle?) Not a bad thing for them until people decide they want to be treated with more civility. Their customer service skills really need improving. Bad attitudes abound during the holiday with long lines and insufficient staff. We stopped at Maine Meat on our way from RI up to Rangeley ME to stock up on some provisions for the long weekend. Our typical stop is Whole Foods in Portland but decided to stop after reading fabulous reviews. Upon walking thru the door of this immaculate butcher shop we were greeted with the subtle smell of smokiness!! Looking in the case full of extensive cuts of meats and chicken which listed on a board the farms where they were raised. We purchased many items to try which were perfectly wrapped in brown butcher paper and clearly labeled. We barely made it out of town when we made a smoked ham "cold cut" sandwich which was the best ham we have ever had reminiscent of those we had in Italy! We cooked the house made kielbasa which again was fabulous subtle smoke juicy and full of meaty flavor! We cooked a 2" thick bone-in rib eye last night that melted in your mouth the nicely marbled meat barely needed a knife!! We highly recommend this awesome farm to table butcher shop!! The owners were so nice and told us if we call in advance they could vacuum seal the meats for me to put directly into our freezer! Awesome customer service and fabulous eats!!! We can't wait to try the other items (pork and chicken!!) which we purchased!!! The boneless chicken breasts still have skin on perfect for placing stuffing or compound butters underneath!!!
