Havent been here in a few years. I now remember why. Service was sort of ok. Food was poor. I sent my turkey with stuffing back because it was served at room temperature. It returned not much warmer - the cook evidently deciding slightly warmer gravy would really raise the temps. Epic fail. Neither of my kids liked the grilled cheese nor the pizza. I mean how can you mess that up? Answer: use low quality cheese....the slimey tasteless kind. Also the pizza was undercooked. Seemed to be a trend against serving anything cooked or hot. Note to cook: please choose another profession - one that you actually care about. I'm second guessing the 2 stars now as too generous...guess we'll be frequenting the restaurants up the road for another few years. read more

Here's my very scientific evaluation of the quality of a restaurant: -The waitress bring me (and in this case my guests') food. When they inevitably ask "Is there anything else I can get you", stand up, shoot your arms open and ask for a hug. If said waitress hugs you, this place is A-okay in my book. Yes, I did in fact get a hug. It was a good hug. Anyway, enough about embarrassing my poor fiance. The food is good - if you get a burger I'd stay away from the "captain" burger, it's two 8oz patties in double cheese burger style, just simply get the plain burger and add toppings. I had a very tough time chomping on a pound of ground beef. Everyone but me cleaned their plates (I had a full pound of BEEF). The beer list is a little on the unimpressive side. However, after dinner came me and my fiance's favorite part, dessert, and this is the category that the Galley Hatch does not eff around with my friends. Fiance and I got the double chocolate mousse cake, sister got the cheese cake and sister's GF got some pudding looking thing. Creme de la creme or something like that. Anywho, all of which went down nice. You're greeted in the front door by a sprawling bakery with all sorts of goodies, the atmosphere is comfortable and the waitstaff gives hugs. If you want a good dessert, decent meal and a hug check this place out. read more

Original Tip: It wasn't that great- not bad but not great. Expensive too. Onion rings were spectacular while the mashed potatoes tasted like shellfish. More detail: I went here for my birthday lunch with me mum and me husband. It was around 1:00 on a Sunday. We opted for the bar area but found seating to be a tad difficult as some of the tables seemed to be on top of each other. The rolls were good, one tasted like bacon for some reason. I ordered the broiled haddock with onion rings and garlic mashed potatoes. The haddock was decent. See original tip. Mom ordered the haddock but with squash and a baked potato- I wish I had gotten the baked. Husband ordered the steak tips, which were rather small portioned for the price, but tasted decent. This place has really gone downhill over the past few years. The dining room had a a really off smell, like something was spilled on the carpet and spoiled. They've really cut back on the menu. Most of the Italian favorites that I used to go for aren't there anymore. Came for a shower (today, actually), and I figure if a restaurant can make the food for a large gathering, and make it not suck, they're pretty decent. I had the clam chowder. To be honest, bi-valves and cephalopods kind of freak me out, but I felt rebellious today because hey, buttery broth sounds better than a salad, so I said yes to calm chowder. It was actually really good. I mean, I still didn't want to finish all the clams because I kept remembering that I was chewing bi-valves and sort of creeped out-- so consumption of the soup went like this. "mm-- wait, eeew.... but mm.... hm... clam chowder's not so bad-- wait, ew." I'm still going to keep avoiding bi-valves and cephalopods Most of the women were torn between the chicken piccata and the baked haddock. I picked haddock, and didn't regret it (to be fair, they didn't regret theirs either). The fish was good-- flakey and not dry. Also, you usually can't go wrong rolling things in buttery ritz cracker crumbs. The veggies on the side were good-- to my tastes. The string beans weren't steamed to the point of being gooey-- they had a nice crunch. And the carrots were chewable (I hate carrots. It's like chewing sticks.). The rice pilaf was... well, it was rice pilaf. The staff was nice, attentive (and brought me all three of my mimosas in good time despite the chaos). My only thought was the atmosphere could be a bit... what? different? brighter? I felt somewhat like I was in a well furnished cellar (not that the decor wasn't nice and clean! Just... dark-ish?). Anyway, yes. This place is just fine. I would have no complaints eating here again. Oh, wait, AND they have a dessert-y sort of counter. I brought home a peanut butter chocolate bar that my boyfriend has insisted is too rich, but every hour or so he takes it out of the freezer and takes a bite. I also purchased a cream puff. It looked smaller when I was ogling it in the display case. The thing is about the size of both fists put together-- not mine, my boyfriend's. The thing is huge. read more

I've been coming to the Galley Hatch for years. A nice sized place which serves top notch seafood and steaks. This time, was considering a surf/turf action, but the menu specials confused things a bit. Had two prices for the seafood casserole section in addition to two prices for the prime rib. At the end, I just went with the prime rib. It was done to perfection. Only complaint was there was a bit too much fat, which I trimmed off. Shared the nachos as well. Better be hungry if you order these. Loads of chips, salsa, pico, and so much cheese on top it kinda looked like a pizza. Tasty for sure! Parking is plentiful. The Pelican Room is a nice place to grab a drink or so if you aren't into eating lunch/dinner. read more

They've been in the game since before I was born so I can only speak for a couple times I've been here. But the waitresses treated me like a friend, aren't annoying, and have full authority to make everything right without holding it against me. The food is top-notch. Sneak preview: Their new bruschetta... I hate bruschetta because it has tomatoes, but they serve theirs with tomatoes underneath. The balsamic vinegar is like candy. read more

In all my years of going to the Galley Hatch, and there have been many, I've never had a bad meal. It's not the cheapest place in town, nor is it the most exciting, but the food is consistently good. They were also the only place in town with a generator when the power went out to all of Hampton during 2008's ice storm, so they get extra consideration for that. The men's room is set up weird, though. You'll see what I mean if you go. It's a little off-putting. Before I was born, my parents actually got kicked out of here. Long story. Also that night, a big fat woman told my mom that the reason my sister wouldn't stop crying was because she was hungry, so my mom asked her if that's how she got so fat. But that was 1979 and I like to think it's improved in the last 30 years. read more

We went here tonight for my birthday. My husband knows I (used to-not anymore) love this restaurant. He made reservations and everything. He was not told when he made the reservation that there was a modified menu. We don't go out much so when we do it's a treat. We sat down, ordered drinks and opened up the menu to find many of our favorites missing. We asked the waitress for suggestions but she was not helpful. I guess my point is we should have been informed about the menu changes when we made the reservation. We then could have looked online and decided to go somewhere else. My husband works as do I and the only thing I was looking forward to on my birthday was a nice dinner with my family. Our night was completely ruined due to a waitress who didn't seem to care if we stayed or left and the food we did order was not great. I don't think I will ever come back here. read more

I have eaten at the Galley Hatch many times. For the most part it has been good, this last time it wasn't. The Lamb Bolognese with roasted vegetables on tagliatelle was terrible! It consisted of a heavy tomato sauce with lamb and steamed baby carrots and green beans. Carrots and green beans were the vegetable of the night-probably not what was supposed to be in this dish. It was seasoned with cinnamon. This dish was not well thought out and a failure. I even found a cinnamon stick in my meal! Take this off your menu please. read more

Besides the decent price of each plate, the Galley Hatch has nothing to offer but bad customer service. Not only were two drinks spilt on us, one was hit over the head with a glass. We received nothing but side remarks and when confronting the manger we were met with "I'm sure your waitress was just flustered" as if the actions were justifiable. read more

This is a family favorite, we've been coming here for years and I can't think of a time when it disappointed.. My 6 year old cousin said she liked the paintings and the fish tank the best. Personally I'm a fan of the nachos and the Cobb salad. Quality food, quality service and great atmosphere. Their menu is big and sometimes I tend to think that big menus are over compensation, however every one of their dishes is well crafted and tastes great!! Their desserts are amazing. I grew up in Hampton, and in fact worked as a dishwasher at the Galley Hatch for a while when I was in high school in the mid-1970's. I remembered they had a unique Greek cheese they used in their pizzas that I have never seen anywhere else - it came in big blocks, one of my jobs was to shred it up. I had a pizza there last week with an old friend and was delighted to find that they still use that cheese. LOVE it. Service was good, the TInios' really know how to run a restaurant. read more

Very surprised at the recent policy of not being able to order a take out on the phone. Was told had to order online. Went to the online site and entered our order and found that there was a "packaging fee" added to our order and a 10.00 tip that was added and not optional. These additional amounts were not disclosed prior to entering the credit card information. I am not sure why the tip was added as no one took our order nor did they serve us...it was a take out that we were going in and picking up. I have been going to the Galley Hatch for over 30 years and was shocked by this business practice. We cancelled our order and went elsewhere. read more

Sunday, August 28, 2022 my wife and I, along with my son and daughter-in-law decided to try The Galley Hatch for the first time. It turned out to be a lousy experience. Our reservation was for 6pm. We were seated promptly ordered drinks and an appetizer When the drinks came, we ordered our meal as well by 6:30pm. After 1 hour and 45 minutes, our meals were finally served. The only problem, besides the wait time, was that my meal did not come out. The waitress asked if we needed anything else and I said yes, my meal. The waitress looked surprised it was not there - uh, 4 people there should be 4 meals. She left and came back about 5 minutes later and said it would be right out. About 15 minutes later she approached our table with a plate of fried oysters, which I did not order. By the way, my family had all just about finished their meals. I had ordered a swordfish special and I told her that fact. She looked confused and said she thought I ordered the oysters. I repeated again that I had not, I did not want the oysters and could she please bring the check. Without an apology, she went away and came back about 5 minutes later and dropped the check on the table, again without any type of an explanation or apology. I understand that business at restaurants is tougher because of the pandemic and I was patient but it was ridiculous that this type of service was offered and no attempt was made to explain or apologize. The bill for the drinks, appetizer and THREE meals was $165. My wife and I eat out regularly in the seacoast area in NH and I have never had service this bad anywhere. And I will be happy to spend $165 at a restaurant that cares about it's customers. read more

Had a day off and suggested meeting a friend at the Galley Hatch for a quick lunch. We are both locals. I've eaten there many times and had many of their apps, sandwiches, burgers, pizza and several entrees. Most of my experiences there have been a "5" or "6" (on a 1-10 scale) - consistently pretty OK food. I don't expect and extraordinary experience there, but at least a pretty good one. We sat in the taproom and were greeted promptly. My friend ordered an ice tea and I ordered a Bloody Mary and a water - both served promptly. Bloody was good - sort of spicy but not overwhelming. Among the two spanish olives, there was a large stick of celery with a brown end sticking up which should have been trimmed. We decided to split the large sized Greek salad and what used to be called the Baron French Dip sandwich (roast beef on a toasted roll with au jus for dipping). We couldn't decide on side so the wait person nicely suggested 1/2 fries and 1/2 onion rings. We received the salad pretty promptly but had expected them to come out together, but to be fair, we had not specified that. The salad was very disappointing especially considering the restaurant is owned by a Greek family and they own a Greek restaurant upstairs. Although fresh, it was mostly a bowl of overly dressed lettuce, a few olives, two slices of cucumber and maybe a teaspoon of feta cheese crumbles. We ate some of it, then set aside the rest to have with our sandwich. We waited and waited and waited. Our waitperson was last seen heading for a closet near the entrance. We saw her once, slipping back into the kitchen but couldn't hail her. After about 15 minutes, I went up to the bar and asked the bartender to check on our sandwich and ordered another drink. After another wait, I was served my drink. My friend told the wait person he had to get back to work soon. She advised something to the effect of the kitchen hadn't noticed the sandwich on the slip and so they were making it now. The sandwich finally arrived. Although the meat and au jus were both tasty, the roll was barely toasted and somewhat squished and gummy. The fries were sparse and cool and had clearly been sitting around for awhile. The onion rings were tasty with a crispy batter and were freshly made and warm. Overall, a disappointing experience. Come on Galley Hatch! I know you can do better! The service was friendly, but not attentive and her apology was about as warm as the fries (not). read more

We haven't been to the Galley Hatch lately. I'm not sure what happened? Seems like since Tino's opened the service went downhill. When we first moved to the area, 3 years ago... we were regulars. We haven't been back in a year, after a few bad service experiences. (staff was slow and rude) We hope to hear things improve. read more

Every year for the past.... Oh let's not get into semantics... For a while no my college friend and I have been going here. The feta dip is my FAVORITE! It's like creamy crack. I've tried to make it at home, but as delicious as mine is theirs is better. Now over these past few years we've gone through some changes, garlic on the pita bread...tapenade versus plain olives, all delicious and I've accepted them all. Tonight they offered us small and large...honey I didn't come all this way for small. They have some new menu items that look superb. We went with apps and tried the chicken wraps, while they were good, I'll pass. Their seafood is usually spot on AND don't get me started on their desserts. I look forward to visiting my friends next year to see the new addition and to eat more feta dip! read more

Amazing food! We all loved our meals:) My GF scallop and shrimp pizza and cup of GF clam chowder (the chowder for everyone is GF) was amazing! Plus portions are large so I took half of it home. The desserts, including the Gluten-Free Double Chocolate Mousse Cake GF, was incredible. Great New Years Day spot en route to Maine or Portsmouth or the outlets. Great bakery and little gift area with cards, a fireplace, cozy comfortable overstuffed chairs, and some books for purchase. Tip: Amazing prime rib served Thursday through Sunday. read more

Went to lunch on a Saturday with two other people. We were seated quickly by a very pleasant hostess. Within a short time our waitress appeared and took our drink orders and offered bread. The drinks arrived promptly and our orders were taken. Nothing complicated, just a burger and two sandwiches. We waited nearly an hour for our food to be delivered to our table. To the waitress's credit, she stopped at our table two separate times to apologize for the delay. When the food was delivered, two of the orders were wrong. I felt bad for the waitress. She claimed the kitchen was slammed. I can't begin to imagine what dinner would be like. The food temperature was tepid at best - all three meals. Very disappointing. Looking at other reviews, this seems to be a common complaint. Keep in mind this is in February. Can you imagine what it must be like during the summer at the height of the tourist season? Came here a few weeks ago with boyfriend and friends and everyone came away pretty happy with their food. It was my first time but our friends have been longtime customers who swear they've always been happy with the grilled salmon entree here (or any grilled fish). Restaurant has an older classic feel to it, all dark wood. Very clean bathrooms which was a nice plus. Service was good, we were a big loud group but our waitress was always very friendly and pleasant. Many of us got the clam chowder and the French onion soup, both of which were very good. My French onion soup was very hot and had great flavor. At our table people ordered the grilled salmon special, the NY strip steak, the roast chicken, and I had the seafood risotto. My risotto was very heavy, creamy and filling with lots of yummy seafood. Definitely a true risotto! While visiting from CO, we could tell we had found a local favorite. Our first visit was to the bakery (I had a cheesecake craving). In the middle of the week both the bar and restaurant were busy so we thought we had to come back later for "real" food. They didn't have cheesecake, but they recommended Ricotta Pie instead. It was lighter than cheesecake and personally I liked it even better. The blueberry sweet my boyfriend got was equally as good. A couple of nights later we did make it back for dinner and neither of us were disappointed. We enjoyed the mussel appetizer, bread and wine. I thought my prime rib was tender and cooked perfectly. The food was great. It's an elegant and simple menu, and everything was to our taste. The service is definitely slow and I am not sure if it is the kitchen or the servers fault. At first we were okay with it but as it progresses it will be a huge delay to come back for drinks, or questions about the dessert menu. My mom and I are from NY but are in the Hampton, NH area quite often. We ordered food to take out last year (first time eating at the Galley Hatch) and although I don't remember what we ordered I do remember that we both enjoyed it. The next time we were in town we ate at the restaurant and the food was really good again. We were back in town a few weeks ago and there were 3 of us who ate at the restaurant this time. For appetizers I ordered the warm feta dip, my mom ordered the onion soup, and our friend ordered the sushi tuna. The feta dip was excellent. I would eat that every day. My mom said the soup was good and our friend said the sushi tuna was great. For entrees all 3 of us ordered the seafood Newburg in a popover. All 3 of us loved it. The only complaint about the food was my mom said she wasn't a fan of the popover in the entree. I guess we got to the restaurant kind of late so there weren't many people there. Maybe 3 tables other than us and it was extremely quiet. We felt super awkward talking and that was a little uncomfortable. It would have been a little better if there was music playing or at least having the music turned up. Our waitress was awesome though and I wish I remembered her name. My mom also loves the bakery in the front of the restaurant. She always grabs something to go from there. I'm sure we'll be back! read more
