This is one of those I should have known better instances. I took my Valentine to The Fruit Yard for the Valentines Day Buffet without a reservation. The wait to be seated was 45 minutes. We were seated in a small upstairs dining room and the buffet was downstairs. The remainder of the meal was excellent. Most buffets are loaded with low cost food, to fill you up, and a few really good items. Everything in this buffet was very good with very little cheap stuff. Let's see if I can remember everything we ate: pineapple, cantaloupe, peel and eat shrimp, lamb chops, beef medallions, stuffed chicken, turkey, prime rib, and a dessert bar to die for. I made three trips to the dessert bar because everything looked and tasted so good. I did not avoid the salad bar but that was because I started with main dishes. I did avoid the crab because I did not want to work that had for my food. We will return to The Fruit Yard for the Tuesday Buffet before heading over to John Thurmond Field to catch a minor league baseball game. read more

Our Thanksgiving was small this year and we decided to bypass the cooking and clean up. We did make a reservation, and am I glad we did! There were many people waiting and it was about 15 minutes past our reservation time (not bad at all considering the number of people waiting) when we were seated. I'm not a buffet person but I've been here before. I wasn't really sure what to expect. All I can say is...WOW! There was a carving station for prime rib, coconut shrimp, leg of lamb, stuffed chicken breast, crab legs, a peppercorn steak dish...oh, and of course turkey! Each dish had all the fixings like candied yams, stuffing, potatoes and green beans...mint jelly for the lamb and horseradish for the prime rib...you name it, it was there. Came here to meet up with old friends and their families. We were seated fairly quickly. We came to enjoy the brunch. I was a bit disappointed by the lack of regular scrambled eggs but the omelette made up for the lack of regular scrambled eggs. My daughter and son like scrambled eggs. The issue was only one person making omelettes using only one pan and one burner. The line can get backed up. I did like the fried chicken. The French toast sticks, well not so great. Last minute switch for my bridal shower and the fruit yard was excellent at accommodating my intimate private party that way during covid I was able to have a nice shower. POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE COMES STANDARD!!! If I were lucky enough to only review the food, I'd give it 3 stars. It's not bad, but it's not anything special. The BIG problem is the management and it appears that most of the other 1 star reviews have had the same experience. My family has been out many times for the brunch buffet. It's normally $25 and nearly worth the price. We called ahead to ask if reservations were available for Father's Day and we were told that due to customer volume, it was first come first serve. Having worked in a restaurant for 5 years, this is not surprising. I made sure to ask if they were offering Father's Day special or any changes to the menu. I was told everything was operating as normal, it was just going to be busy. We showed up on Fathers Day to a packed house. We were told if we would like to sit up stairs, it would be just a few minutes. We were seated an hour later. We were annoyed but shrugged it off due to how busy they were. We ate our meal with no major complaints about the food but then we got the bill. Since we had been told on the phone the day before there were no changes, we were astounded when the price came out to $45 per person instead of $25. For a table of 5, this is a considerable difference! We waited to speak with the manager about the surprise bill. He let us know that the price was for the day was listed on their handwritten menu board in the lobby. This is the same lobby that had 40+ people waiting and completely obstructing the menu board. I let him know that I called the day before and was told that there were no changes to the brunch buffet. He said that if that were the case, I had to have been given incorrect information. I asked why they didn't use table top notifications like other restaurants and he said that the hostesses and servers would were supposed to tell every party about the price change. SPOILER ALERT: No one ever told us anything. The managers reaction to the justified grievance we had with their business practices was "we can address that at our next management meeting." I don't think this will happen for a second. Other people have lodged this SAME EXACT COMPLAINT from Mother's Day and Easter this year. This tells me there has been a change in ownership or management and that they simply don't care. Customers are only numbers. As a result, I will never do business with the fruit yard again. I will not attend events, get gas, or dine at their establishment. I would be willing to amend this post if a member of management would like to contact me with the results of their "management meeting" and the solution that was formulated to insure that future customers won't be lied to, taken advantage of, or legally robbed blind! read more

I haven't been shocked by restaurant staff in a very long time. I have been wanting to write about this place for a while but have had a lot of activities going on this summer, which is more important than this but I must review. My husband and I decided to escape for a few hours on Father's Day without the kids and try this place out. Of course, knowing it's been around for years and driving by so many times, he decided to finally try it out. When we walked in, we were semi-greeted, which I brushed off. The wait time wasn't too bad for the occasion. Only about 20 minutes. During the time we waited, I overheard an elderly couple talk to the host (manager I presume) about their special and the man told them there was a $50 Father's Day brunch, which was never mentioned to us. Brushed it off, hoping MAYBE our waitress would mention it to us. We finally got called and were taken to a two seater booth close to the salad bar. I loved how it had the divider that made it a little more intimate. As our waitress came up the steps (about a minute later), I accidentally dropped my fork, which she kindly insisted on picking up for me but instead of taking it away and replacing it with a new one she placed it back on the table right next to me where it originally was. I was shocked and grossed out but said nothing. I continued to watch her and let her do her job as she asked us what drinks we wanted. I asked her what type of cocktails they had and she said she didn't know of any they didn't have cocktails. As this was being said I thought both things that just happened were very odd but went ahead and just asked for a water and my husband asked for a Sprite. As we waited for the drinks and picked up the menus on the side of the table, I noticed a smaller cocktail menu (typical) with a whole list of ales, wines, and guess what? Cocktails! Did the waitress at least mention to look at the cocktail list? Did she mention any Father's Day special? Any special at all? Absolutely not! I showed my husband the menu and we talked about what just happened and just stared at each other. We were in shock. Before the waitress could return to our table with our drinks, we very gladly walked out. I haven't been this disappointed with customer service in a very long time. I'm at awe that there are restaurants that actually really treat people this way. But guess what? I've said it before and I'll say it again. You treat me and my family like this when we go out to spend money on your restaurant, you better bet I'll be Yelping you!! (Funny, huh?) Came here for the Father's Day buffet.... while the food was great, we were unaware that on holidays the price is DOUBLED!!! We were not notified upon making our reservation, and didn't find out until our almost THREE HUNDRED dollar check was brought to our table. Once we asked the manager about the price difference, he pointed to a small sign that had the pice adjustment that was blocked by a crowd of guests waiting to be seated. Pretty disappointing visit.... This used to be a very dependable place to eat, with great food AND service!! We came here today to celebrate my boyfriend's 50th birthday, expecting the usual great prime rib and great service that used to be the norm here when Theresa was the manager. INSTEAD, we weren't served any bread/butter at all, our water glasses were left dry for about 20 minutes, and our prime rib was more fat than rib :'( Notice that there's no condensation whatsoever on our glasses in the pic. And the fat in the pic almost equaled the amount of edible meat from his prime rib. When we complained to the manager (about lack of fluid only, because he rudely halted any further comments), he acted pretty upset, like we had the audacity to be thirsty. We ordered calamari and wings as appetizers. Squid was ordinary and rather forgettable--we make better at home. The wings were LARGE, very dark brown (burnt), super spicy (hot, hot, hot), and a little red in the middle. Dinner included prime rib which was thin and rather bland. Macaroni and cheese with crab dish was not a great marriage. Salmon was frozen, dry and bland, as well. In each case, my beloved makes a far better version at home, which negates the main reason for going out in the first place. If your home cooking is weak and the portions small, you'll enjoy the Fruityard. However, if you eat out often or someone at home knows their way around a kitchen, you may be disappointed. read more

Been a Modesto resident for 15 years , my first time here . This place was "alright", i ordered the pulled pork with fries and the rest of my family ordered the lunch express . Prices aren't overpriced , your average priced menu if you will , but i enjoyed the pulled pork , the bread wasn't to fresh or good tasting in my experience. The salad bar was great and pretty for the eye, but there aren't choices for soups only the one soup of the day . The place itself is homey and built like a cabin. The servers and host are professional and are quick to deliver , the service was absolutely fine . Aside from food the fruit yard is deforested finely with a memorable pond with fountain spouts, along with ducks . Friday night on the way home from La grange decided to stop for beers and dinner. Restaurant had a wait so sat in the bar. The bartender was harsh, not friendly at all. We found our own menus and waited and waited, finally was able to place an order, a table came available we notified the bartender that we were going to move. She was obviously annoyed even though the entire bat area shares their tips. Once seated we ordered another round. My husbands beer smelled like bleach. An obvious dishwasher error. He notified the manager and received a new beer. Our food was delivered. It was ok, typical steakhouse meal nothing to exciting or amazingly delicious, after our food was delivered the waitress barely acknowledged us. We had to flag her down for the check. After reviewing the check we noticed we were incorrectly charged. It was corrected after a brief discussion. The corrected bill was dropped off quickly while the waitress ran off with purse in hand on her break. The food is always consistently delicious. Every single time I go to the Fruit Yard, the food more than meets or exceeds my expectations. I would try either the restaurant or try the Sunday brunch. They also have a BBQ and market location outside the restaurant, so I would check that out on the way home. It is a completely different environment than the restaurant. Came in yesterday disappointed in the service we received. Understood they were busy but we were constantly forgotten about, took over 15 minutes for refills. I asked our server if sodas were included in the kids meal she assured me they were, get the check and we were charged additional for them.
