This place is closed now, but when it was open, it was such a great option for a date, visitors in town or just a special occasion restaurant to visit. We've been to the French Connection 3 times over a period of 1.5 years, each for special occasions. The food remains consistently interesting and delicious, and the waitstaff is really friendly and formal without feeling too fancy. We did notice a slight price increase based on the way they've changed up the tasting menu offerings since our last visit, but we still had a special occasion meal with a €55 bottle of wine for €180 total for 2 people. To me, that is very affordable for such a nice meal. What we really love is that the menu is changed drastically each time we visit, so we get to try different items and have a new experience each time. The tasting menu options are very affordable as tasting menus go! Our favorites this time were the mussels as well as the tomatoes with dijon ice cream (yes!). For me, the beef cheek was not so nice. But that's what is great about the tasting menu... there are enough samplings to leave full, even if you skip one or two items or leave a bit of food behind (not that my hubby didn't finish everything I did not!). We are leaving the Netherlands this month back to NYC, and this is one of the restaurants we will miss the most! What an awesome experience! We went with the full tasting menu and it was delicious from start to finish. The wine selection is very nice - we had some white burgundy and red burgundy and it paired nicely with everything. The folks there are super nice and the chef comes out to describe each dish! Would highly recommend doing the full tasting especially with four people - it makes for an enjoyable evening! The amount of detail to each item is incredible - starting with the amuse bouche - which looks like a regular black olive - but it is a burst of flavor when you pop the entire piece in your mouth! What a gem. Thanks to high ratings on Yelp we took a chance on this restaurant for our last group dinner in the city. We stopped by on the Sunday afternoon and reserved a table at eight, for eight. What a treat. We settled on the tasting menu with matched wines flight and were not disappointed. From the first bite (olive) to the last, we were treated to the creations of a great chef and a very skilled sommelier /server. The food was totally delicious and the wine pairings were quite a surprise. We attempted to guess the region and grape for some of the more esoteric whites and were surprised more than once by the answer. The restaurant has a modest exterior but opens up into a large comfortable space. We were a noisy group but the environment seemed to handle it well. As a benchmark, it beat out the wonderful De Kas as our favorite meal of the weekend and that was quite an experience also. read more

Really nice meal here. We tried it not really knowing what to expect. We had a reservation and got a cozy corner table in the back with a good view of the whole restaurant. I don't often find greatness with food in Amsterdam but French Connection is an exception. We decided to order dishes a la carte as we didn't know how much food we wanted but we should've just done the set menu as in the end the cost was about the same. Every dish was special and like nothing we had tried before. Bill at the end for 2 people with a couple of drinks each was around €90. Definitely recommend it for a special meal. read more

Went here for a birthday dinner and it really was fabulous! French tapas, and we chose the small tapas menu plus the oysters. All of it was delicious, especially the seafood: mussels, razor clam and oysters. I got a bit tipsy, so I don't really remember how many courses we had, but I left totally full. Except for the salted caramel dessert, that was so scrumptious I wanted to eat 10 more. Cozy atmosphere and friendly service rounded out our experience. Try it for your next date night! read more

As good as it gets indeed. I would put my experience at The French Connection the other night up there in the top 10 meals I have ever had. The atmosphere and staff are relaxed and congenial--no pretension--and the food is not fussy but just incredibly creative and so well executed. Do yourself a favor and order the full 7-course tasting menu. Do yourself another favor and get the full wine pairing with it. Sit back and let heaven happen. My favorites among the food courses include the "dark olives" that aren't really olives, but capture the every essence of Olivia. The tomatoes in tomato. The steak tartare--wow yum! The gnocchi with oxtail. And the duck breast with foie gras. Every dish was accessible and yummy in that good-food way, but creative and interesting in that great-chef way. The sommelier is a young lad studying for the Master of Wine. He is of course, a good-natured and fun encyclopedia of wine knowledge at the tender age of 30, and I wish him well in his studies. But more importantly, he has a palate for pairing. There wasn't a single wine all night that was less than wonderful, and each one was so perfectly paired. Go ahead, find a wine to pair with tomatoes on tomatoes. He did that. He even had a Dutch wine that if I could I would buy cases of. I don't know who owns or runs this place. We tried the full menu of this relatively new place and it was a fantastic experience! The concept is you get small bites (like Tapas), all in French cuisine. We really liked the innovative cooking. Examples were filled olives that tased like the best olives you've ever had, fantastic mussles, amazing oysters, meat to die for. Really good food. And they have a great wine list to pair your food with. Finally, the service was very friendly. A bit slow at the start, but they made up for that during the night. So they really deserve their 5-stars! read more

For our last night in Amsterdam, we wanted to go to a nice restaurant close to our hotel; so we chose this place. Little did we know this would be one of our most memorable dinners, with a romantic setting outside next to a canal, with luxurious, Michelin quality food. We were visiting Amsterdam and I did a little research before we arrived. This place was new, but got some really positive reviews and I was intrigued. Despite many locals or the concierge knowing too much about it, we made reservations. I was completely blown away, I actually said during the meal (do the tasting menu!!) that it was the best restaurant I had ever been to. Now, I am a food writer in Miami, travel a lot and am in restaurants more than the average person. This was true, five star, elevated cuisine with eye-popping execution and extraordinary flavor combinations and textures. We ordered every french connection tapas on the menu minus the desserts and shared. What a good decision. As a result we got 8 great small dishes, plus two amuse bouche bites, all of which were well prepared and interesting. It turned out to be a busy Sunday night so the staff was somewhat overwhelmed and the meal took over two hours as a result. read more
