Loved the ambience. Lively atmosphere. Beautiful setting. Lots of menu choices. We didn't have reservations so we couldn't stay long at the bar. The clams are a little salty, you can definitely taste the sherry, but they go well with bread. The octopus is superb.

    Great selection

We had 8 pm reservations but we came in a bit early and one of the owners said it wasn't a problem. We communicated in Spanish and he appreciate it, being a Spanish restaurant. This restaurant is fast moving, loud at times , but we found it fun and yummy !!! The pintxos are perfectly sized, with a great selection .... but be warned once they run out they are done for the night. We tried ordering some over and that was it they were out. They also carry a Spain draft beer that is amazing, wine selection is nice with many Spanish ones on the list. We order a seafood paella that was bit dry, but it was tasty overall and a nice size. Prices are very good and the quality is top notch !!!! Well worth it !!!! Highly recommend this place.

We enjoyed our meal at La Olivia during our last day in Amsterdam. We came at an odd time so the kitchen wasn't serving the full menu but we were able to try the Pintxos. Great plate full of six delicious bites! I wish the waiter had explained what we were eating but it tasted delicious so I didn't really care!

Service was a bit awkward when we first arrived, but we quickly got over the international barrier and enjoyed our visit. The menu was a bit confusing. They have a regular menu, but also have tapas prepared in a window for you to choose from. I can see that this might get chaotic when they are busy because they would have people perusing through the place looking at what was in the window trying to make a selection. Their wines are very good selections. Food was good. We had a shellfish empanada, an eggplant dish and the grilled octopus. The eggplant dish was so-so, the empanada pretty good and the octopus was amazing. It was cooked and seasoned perfectly.

The lardo with mushrooms (lower right corner) is a must try!

La Oliva has been getting some mixed reviews, understandable. First of all, no complaints about the staff...swift and accommodating. As for the pintxos: depending on the choice, it can be either a hit or a miss. Don't do as my friend, don't be tempted by the semblance, go for substance! Instead my friend went for the tower of prawn & serrano ham. Just from the looks of it, I could already tell it was likely gonna be somewhat bland. There was nothing was done to the prawn, not basted with marinade, no pimenton or garlic, nothing....just a plain cooked prawn skewered on top of some serrano ham.....but it looks so PRETTY, she said....Me: I'm not going to say anything, but meanwhile shaking my head internally. It's her mistake to make, if she wants pretty, she can have pretty. I, on the other hand, went for combinations I knew would work or at least had great potential. In fact, I think I even went for some of the least impressive looking pinxtos. A good decision in the end, cause they delivered in flavor and I was fully satisfied with my choice. And although my friend wasn't necessarily completely dissatisfied with her choice, after having a bite of mine, I could definitely detect some food envy. Seriously though, how can you go wrong with lardo with mushrooms & cheese or foie gras martini (mango with a chunk of foie gras) or roasted duck breast with an apricot or prune? relish. Anyways whatever it was, it was hella good! Had some tasty cava to wet my throat. Eeek, that sounds narly. So, as with life, pintxos are all about the decisions you make. However, luckily also as with life, if you're lucky, you get several opportunities to make the smart choices which I'm pretty sure at least should include some lardo, foie gras & duck breast.

my only disappointment is that there were not rows of amazing tapas on the counter top like the photos show on yelp :( they only had 4 different dishes displayed. we had a very good bottle of white wine. And the typical open face dutch style sandwich. but it was good!

Dutch people are gigantic - and the pintxos are sized accordingly
    Celine N.

Dutch people are huge. What does that have to do with a pintxos spot, you ask? Everything. What I found most impressive about La Oliva is the sheer size of the pintxos - they're sized accordingly, which is great. Stopped in here one afternoon with friends and had the loveliest time drinking wine, eating Iberico ham and gawking at the truly awe-inspiring pintxos display. Funny enough, I still haven't tried the pintxos but they're definitely on my to-eat list!

AMAZING. One of my favorite restaurants of all time, and I don't mean just in Amsterdam. Definitely worth coming to. It's alittle hard to find and is a quaint little establishment, but you will not regret coming here.

Go to Amsterdam, find a Pintxos-bar and have Tapas there. Confused? Don´t be. What they serve at La Olivia are Tapas. They may mostly have a stick in them, but I refuse to refer to them as pintxos. For being pintxos, they are much too big, too expensive. That said, the Tapas at la Olivia are excellent. I had a whole Bunch (see pictures) because I came in hungry and they did not disappoint. Good Quality & great taste. Service was great and the prices they take seem justified (but then I live in Paris were everything is super expensive). Loved the atmosphere too. They really have transported the feeling of a pintxos-bar to amsterdam - then they serve Tapas there and I still love it ;)

We made a reservation to celebrate a friend's engagement, and so we got to say "one of each!" to every plate. They were so accommodating with dietary restrictions, and carefully mapped out which plates I could have, while adjusting others as possible. Every plate had amazing sauces, so we really put "fare la scarpetta" to work with our bread. Some standouts that we all loved were the langoustine with sweetbread and the eggplant with miso. The atmosphere was cozy and made us reluctant to leave at the end. Thank you, Gertrude, for an amazing dinner. We'll definitely be back!

We were seated outdoors on their charming terrace, facing the street, which is jammed with fun street-side restaurants. Plenty of people watching! We were having a great time and it was clear that the rest of the guests were, too. It felt like a chic and delightful party. The absolute highlight of our meal was the fresh French artichoke, which was nearly as big as my head. That I could have one served to me this minute! It was the BEST I have ever had, and I'm crazy about artichokes. Lamentably, it was served with a bland mayonnaise (or was it a bland Hollandaise?), while it was begging for something acidic (artichokes are alkaline in flavor), so I asked for a vinaigrette. They brought me the mignonette sauce for oysters, instead. Better, but not much. Everything else I sampled was good, but I would go back many times over and simply gorge on artichokes. So would everybody else, from what I could see. Every single table ordered one or more. Gertrude's encourages family-style sharing, and the focus is on dishes that showcase the flavors of a few simple ingredients. There is room for improvement. With just a few tweaks, this place might deserve a Michelin star.

In the front part of the store is a take-out counter where they sell hot items, like sandwiches and baked pastries and desserts, like cheesecakes and cookies the size of your face! It all looked appealing and would've totally purchased a food item, had we not had lunch beforehand. Throughout the store were the cheese samples of the many different various kinds. It goes beyond what you thought gouda could be. There are sheep's and goat's cheeses for many of the different types. There are pesto cheeses that come in different colors like a bright blue and pink. There are cheeses that pair well with the dips that had me thinking about my next dinner party. There's Dutch chocolate here for sale. There's different knives for cutting cheese. There's truly everything here you could imagine for your gouda-filled meal. Staff was super friendly and asked if we needed any help or wanted to know more about any of the different cheeses. For sale, a lot of the goudas are pre-packaged for a pound and meets airline security measures for taking it home with you. I'm glad we stumbled upon Dutch Delicacy. We were able to try so many different cheeses, which I found a few for home. I recommend for anyone visiting Amsterdam to make a stop here; there's a lot of items you'll want to take home with you.
