Our favorite lambic, made with morello (?) cherries

So happy Piccolo sells our favorite Kriek lambic (Liefmans). Good, simple, fresh food: apple and fennel salad, quiche. Nice to sit out here in the sun: bike-free pedestrian zone (perhaps that's a draw for the many kids we see here?). Quieter area, modern buildings, young families, some hipsters. We're about to head to the food halls next door.

    Aperol Spritz and Pimm's Cup

Fantastic location on a quiet alley but next to Foodhallen. Great tapas, or mini apps, out of the hot sun, with friendly and cute waiters. The Aperol Spritz and Pimm's Cup were delicious, and the pesto dip for the bread is the best I've ever tasted. Excellent selection of food. Oh, and the prices are very good! Wish I had found this place earlier. Thank you, Piccolo, for great food, cocktails, service and value!

    Yum yum yum!

I love this place! So fresh, cute and cozy. Really warm home cooking. They have board games too! Neighborhood spot for sure. All meals are super small but filling. Cook for the season and everything is made from scratch. I would suggest ordering 3 items to make a full meal like my photo.

Iced spiced mocha & iced tea, both fantastic!

Stumbled across this place with a friend of mine looking for a cafe and was pleasantly surprised! The two employees were very friendly and smiley, we sat outside and enjoyed the sun. The whole place gave off a great vibe/ was decorated nicely as well! Did not try any of the food. The drinks were great- tried my friends iced tea which I typically don't like and it was delicious! I ordered an iced spiced mocha which was good but a little too thick consistency for my taste, it was also very strongly spiced/ not just chocolate flavor.

Fun happy hour this evening at Piccolo. Fantastic ginger mojito! Looking forward to more apres work events at Piccolo!!

Since it's my favorite place, I looked it up on maps and saved it. When I was there a month or so later, I was riding my bike in the afternoon and saw someone sitting near the front window working on his MacBook with a nice glass or white wine. I immediately slammed the brakes and parked my bike! Fortunately I had my MacBook so I could get some work done and drink some great wine at 4 PM (16:00 hours). Bottom line is you simply purchase a 20-30 euro card (or whatever you want) when you get there and can just choose from any wine in the restaurant. It's awesome. The notable thing is, the bartenders are wonderful and very helpful. They don't just let you fend for yourself, they assist you, give you advice, even free samples! Awesome place. Also, great food too! Try the oysters! They have bitterballen (of course) all day - then dinner and food all night. My favorite dinner place in Overtoom. Don't be afraid as I was the first time - when it was really crowded. Friendly and warm place - gezellig!

We made a reservation to celebrate a friend's engagement, and so we got to say "one of each!" to every plate. They were so accommodating with dietary restrictions, and carefully mapped out which plates I could have, while adjusting others as possible. Every plate had amazing sauces, so we really put "fare la scarpetta" to work with our bread. Some standouts that we all loved were the langoustine with sweetbread and the eggplant with miso. The atmosphere was cozy and made us reluctant to leave at the end. Thank you, Gertrude, for an amazing dinner. We'll definitely be back!

We were seated outdoors on their charming terrace, facing the street, which is jammed with fun street-side restaurants. Plenty of people watching! We were having a great time and it was clear that the rest of the guests were, too. It felt like a chic and delightful party. The absolute highlight of our meal was the fresh French artichoke, which was nearly as big as my head. That I could have one served to me this minute! It was the BEST I have ever had, and I'm crazy about artichokes. Lamentably, it was served with a bland mayonnaise (or was it a bland Hollandaise?), while it was begging for something acidic (artichokes are alkaline in flavor), so I asked for a vinaigrette. They brought me the mignonette sauce for oysters, instead. Better, but not much. Everything else I sampled was good, but I would go back many times over and simply gorge on artichokes. So would everybody else, from what I could see. Every single table ordered one or more. Gertrude's encourages family-style sharing, and the focus is on dishes that showcase the flavors of a few simple ingredients. There is room for improvement. With just a few tweaks, this place might deserve a Michelin star.

I went during the evening hours to meet up a good friend who is an Amsterdam local, throwing a get together for work colleagues. The ambiance is casual, but has a very hip feel (in a good way). Not sure what it looks like during the day, but at night, space is cleared out for socializing and the service is quick, friendly and fun. The father also went around with some hor d'oeuvres that were delicious. So if that's any indication of how the food is at the restaurant during the day, then I'm sure it's amazing. If you're looking for a great time to catch up with a friend, meet other fun locals or want to grab a drink at a cool relaxed bar, then this is your place. I would also recommend trying their full menu during the day!

I've spent the summer living in Amsterdam and had a group of friends come to visit last week. Their Air B&B was right down the street from Bar Leijten. Unfortunately for my friends, the owner of the Air B&B provided incorrect contact information, leaving them stranded on the street with their luggage while they tried to get ahold of him. After moving over to Bar Leijten to have a drink while they figured their situation out, the staff went above and beyond to not only accommodate our huge (and flustered) group, but also to help them track down alternative accommodations in the area. I have never encountered such a friendly, helpful, and all around incredible group of people. They truly bent over backwards to help. To top it off, the food (hummus and charcuterie plate) that we ordered was super tasty and filling, and the beer was cold, perfect, and plentiful. Definitely stop in to support this awesome group of people if you're in the neighborhood!

(I get it, coined flipped, I live in South Florida) We decided to take the 2 bar seats on the quiet side of the bar. It gave us a view to the kitchen, which was the best part of the meal. I could see the absolute passion from the guys in the kitchen cooking and plating their love for food. Too bad the rest of the service from the bar was less than stellar. I probably wouldn't come back but I would recommend anyone local to check it out for the food above all. The clams had a wonderful broth that I wish there was a basket of bread to soak up the juice left over from the chorizo crumbles and meaty little clams. The skewers of roasted chicken thighs were crispy and well seasoned on the outside while being tender and juicy on the inside. So simply yet so complex.
