Everything about this tiny cafe is whimsical and a bit dreamy. If Dutch faeries sipped afternoon organic tea, I'd expect to find them here. Which makes me wonder... do faeries claim nationalities? I hope not. There's a minuscule indoor seating area, but come spring and summer - as long as it's not raining - you'll want to move on back to the very leafy and verdant outdoor terrace. If you're lucky, the one table that gives you rain protection but is still technically outdoors will be available. I was lucky. And it did sprinkle while I was there. I can't speak to the food. I only had fresh mint tea, served with honey and a teensy cookie. Let me tell ya... it was the day after Amsterdam's hottest day in recorded history and the entire city was just tuckered out. Feeble even. That's why I asked for ice and made my hot tea into an iced mint tea. Re-freshing! The menu offerings are limited but apparently satisfying judging from my dining companions' happy faces. The two women caring for us were terrific about setting the friendly tone. I love a good modern café that has plenty of space to sit on spacious and comfortable couches, but I also like a little scrappy and unique coffee house. Not that modern coffee places can't be unique, but there is something about old buildings that just make coffee taste better - It's in the air. Their coffee is from Thailand and you can choose between cow's milk and soy. Besides coffee, you have a range of choices from fruit juice, fruit and yogurt shakes, hot Italian sandwiches, soups and salads, to bagels and sweet and savoury pies from their own kitchen. Although their coffee didn't make me go wow, I did enjoy a cup of well brewed cappuccino. Upon entering the little shop, something all the way in the back caught my eye. It was a terrace! When asked where I would like to sit, I immediately pointed towards the light coming through the leaves and the trees, and I couldn't be happier with my seating choice. It's just perfect so you have sunlight on your face, but not directly because it's partially blocked by the leaves. There is a breeze that is just enough wind, and it's quiet. Go for coffee in the "secret" garden out back, stay for the cat. Obviously the real draw of this place is eating or drinking out back in the little yard. In warmer weather there are vines and flowers blooming as well as fresh flowers dressing the tables year-round. The coffee was good and they do have soy milk but I don't remember anything about the food so it must not have been.. well.. memorable. In crappy weather it is still a cute cafe but obviously not as cozy. The beautiful cat does help the atmosphere but, true to stereotypes, it mainly wishes to nap and doesn't often enjoy being pet. Landed in the early morning from the redeye and quickly learned that a lot of the places in the city center that serve hot breakfast food are not open at 8 a.m. Not wanting to wait hours to satiate my hunger, I found Zuivere online. It was pretty empty both times I went in during my week's stay, which surprised me, because it was a great spot. When you enter you are greeted with the smells of fresh coffee and baked goods. I had the fried eggs with bacon both times I ate here. They serve it over toast with the eggs on the runny side and the bacon more chewy than crunchy (good things in my book). The coffee (espesso-based fare) is all good, too. The staff during both visits were incredibly friendly and provided great service. There's also a rambunctious store cat roaming around as well which may or may not be a good thing depending on your allergies or temperament. One thing I was bummed about was that I didn't get a chance to sit out in the back garden terrace area, which looked lovely. Bit too cold on the days I was there, though. Next time I'm in the city center I'm definitely making a point to stop here for breakfast again. read more

Such a cute place for brunch! We went here after an early morning canal tour. The restaurant has a small dining area in the front and an open patio garden area in the back/upstairs. We were seated in the garden area which was shaded, but had lots of sunlight. The place is run by 2 women that did everything from taking orders and cooking the food themselves, so the service was a bit flustered, but very welcoming. The open kitchen allowed us to watch them prepare all the dishes and make fresh smoothies. We all ordered breakfast and smoothies. Everything was great!! Great local coffee shop! We ordered the quiche and the eggs and bacon on toast with a croissant. It was all very tasty! The quiche had a great flaky crust and tasted like someone's mom made it. I also had a cappuccino that is now in my top 15. It was a real cappuccino the way it is supposed to be made, nothing like the gross stuff you get at places like Starbucks. The service was also very good. The woman I am assuming is the owner served us and I had mentioned that I had to try the quiche because I saw a review that said it was great on yelp. She accually went to check and couldn't find it. Turns out that review was for another place and I had them confused, but it doesn't matter now because it was great and now she had this review. I have to say, that my experience started out great, but ended VERY poorly. My Dutch speaking husband and I (English speaking) came in for breakfast with our 2 year old daughter, everything was very pleasant, service was just ok (but this is typical Dutch), food was good. BUT once my Dutch speaking husband left and my other English speaking friend came to join, I was treated like a second class citizen. COMPLETELY IGNORED, AND ON PURPOSE! We waited 25 mins for them to come by the table to take my friends order, so instead we decided to kindly walk up to the bar to place an order - they told us to sit back down and they'd be right with us. Another 20 mins later, and after she had take the order of 2 other Dutch speaking tables, STILL completely ignored. Why even work in a restaurant if you go out of your way to make paying customers feel unwelcome and so unbelievably uncomfortable. We live in a multi-cultural complex world, and I get that Amsterdamers are hugely suffering from the massive influx of tourists and the locals get frustrated. But take a deep breath, put your own frustrations about "english speaking people" aside and treat me, my 2 year old daughter and my friend like HUMAN BEINGS. I really do hope the people working there read this, and instead of feeling good about having treated us so poorly, learn something from this experience - and know that I asked my toddler to forgive you for your unkindness - and taught her a lesson about patience and forgiveness that day instead. The staff is extremely friendly; however, they are slow. The juices we ordered were worth the wait, but there was a huge gap between them and the lunch. We wanted to have breakfast at a place that's pretty close to where we were staying, so after a little bit of internet searching, I discovered this place. It's a tiny restaurant, just a few doors down from the huge Starbucks on Rembrandt Square. Despite its proximity to a very touristy area, it didn't feel touristy at all when we walked in there. All the signs, and the menus were in Dutch (unlike most places we've seen so far, which have signage in English, or at least an English translation). Once the owner saw that we were Americans, she gave us menus in English. The restaurant is adorable, and they thankfully don't allow talking on cell phones. We started out with coffees, and they were extremely delicious. Even my decaf coffee, lol. Foodwise, there were two main categories on the menu. The first was "Italian bread" (if I remember correctly), and the other was "Toasties." The first type of meal is two big toasted buns with a bunch of other ingredients on top. My husband had the "Lamb's Ham" on Italian bread (which, despite the name, does not contain any pork. It's smoked lamb). It had a type of white cheese and pesto on top, and it was very delicious (I know because I kept taking bites of his). The "Toasties" are tiny little toasted sandwiches. I had one with smoked turkey and cheese, and it was also really good, but kind of small. I was still hungry afterwards, so in the future, I would get something alongside it. Afterwards, I ordered an orange juice, and was delighted to discover that it was freshly squeezed. All in all, I highly recommend Zuivere Koffie. It's a great place for breakfast. UPDATE: We went back 2 more times during our 4-day trip. The apple tart with whipped cream is AMAZING, as is the egg with roast beef, cheese and chives on bread. Perfection. read more
