Server from Argentina and the sangria was great ! He gets 5 stars ! The wings were ok, the ham croquettes were ok. And I know it's the patio (small) and I know it's Europe, but we could not even finish as everyone around us was smoking ..

Affordable tapas place. The calamari , ceviche and mini croquettes was good. The waiter was super nice. Yes will recommend to a friend.

Ham Croquettes

Passed by Tapas Bar Catala last night and noticed that all of the tables were full and they had a line out the door. Impressive enough that I decided to go here for dinner tonight and was greatly disappointed. Save your time and money and go elsewhere. Pros: The wait was short The water and wine was served quickly The ambiance is the experience Cons: Ham Croquettes were still cold in the middle. Not quite frozen but not too far away. Waitstaff seemed overwhelmed. Forgot to bring 1/3 of my order, dropped food in the lap of a young lady dining at the table next to me and lacked attention to simple details. Wasted evening on dinner in Amsterdam

So, after shopping around downtown one can get super famished. To tell you the truth, this place wasn't even on our radar to eat at when we were on the street. We were actually on the way to another restaurant a few doors down. But when my buddy saw they were serving razor clams, we were totally sold. We order a bottle of Torres red and proceeded to bark out items that we fancied. Octopus: I cook, and I've acquired the skill to properly cook an octopus and I tell ya. These guys know exactly what they're doing. Perfect taste, char and texture. Such a refreshing experience. Specially from a guy who now lives in Michigan and rarely gets to see ocean food. Anchovies: I adore the presentation. Mildly salted taste of the cured anchovies combined with red peppers with some charred finish is a YES. My mouth exalts with every bite. Plus I'm a big fan of anchovies. Razor Clams: Same as the octopus, timing and precision is key. Must be tender, moist and still contain the remnant flavors of the sea. I adore this restaurant for executing all the proper components of this dish. Look, all these dishes are in its most simplest form. No heavy sauce, no heavy spices. Just honest to goodness sea food glorified with just oil, salt and pepper. Just a little lemon, a glass of proper red and great conversation. This is the life I love to live. Thank you Catalas Tapas Bar for being amazing. We'll definitely meet again next time. Thank you so much for reading my review. I hope this helps with your decision making experience. Enjoy your awesome yelptastic day!

Cheers! Salud!!!

A very nostalgic place... a 'lil disappointed for not serving a red or white sangria, ugh!!! This is a nice tapas bar. Good service, great location, clean and affordable. I was also able to utilized my crooked Spanish...apologies to my family, didn't mean to embarrassed you both. Papas con aioli is so freaking goooood!!! Be very cautious, it is hot. Let it cool down for 5 minutes when they bring it out to you. You're welcome! "People will travel anywhere for good food - it's crazy" - Rene Redzepi

We always look for a good Tapas restaurant wherever we travel to. Tapas Bar Catalá did not disappoint. In fact we went back on our last night. Because of the food and wine, yes - but tbh we wanted to say goodbye to the staff

Found this place walking down the Spuistraat on a cold winter evening. Tapas Catala was deserted (it was early in the evening) but the staff was very welcoming. The restaurant is pretty small (cosy and 'gezellig') but has a good offering of tapas. I had the pan con tomate which was a HUGE portion of the tomato bread you see in Spain. I also enjoyed a healthy portion of the famed jamon iberico bellota, an unlawful treat in my home country for some reason. The wine was Spanish and reasonably priced if not exceptional. I had a bunch of other tapas from the case - gambas, some machego, etc. Nice.

We stopped in for a quick bite at Tapas Catala because it was very close to the flat where we were staying while in Amsterdam. The restaurant itself has some character and it's nice that they have a few small tables outside, but the food we had did not really wow us, especially for the price we paid. You have 2 options: pick out small tapas plates from the bar at 4.50€ each or order somewhat larger plates of freshly prepared dishes from the menu (most at a much higher price). The tapas plates at the bar looked like they had been sitting out for quite some time and did not look very appetizing, so we opted to order from the menu. We tried the chorizo with bread and the ham croquettes. Both were quite heavy and just not terribly flavorful. The service was fast but they don't accept credit cards so that is always a bit of an inconvenience. Unfortunately we just weren't impressed with Tapas Catala.

Any restaurant near touristy areas always have me a little nervous. But we were showing our friend around the Spui area and indulging our favorites fries and sweet treats when we realized that we really needed to have a real meal. This tapas restaurant delivered! I still don't really understand...but I think you can order tapas off the menu or from the variety at the bar. The menu is a little pricey for certain items, but the portion size makes up for it. The food was pretty tasty and we are happy to go back. The service was very good as the girl who was serving the inside was very attentive, although she did get an order wrong, she tried to fix it (but my husband preferred the mistake order anyway!). The man behind the counter was super nice as well. I can't speak to Spanish authenticity but people seem to really like the food. My only concern is that when my husband finished his beer, the server didn't ask if he wanted anything else. Maybe her mind was elsewhere, but she just took the glass without saying anything. A bit strange. It is a tiny place, so don't bring luggage here! And I did overhear that they don't take reservations. So just pop in to see if they have a spot for you.

This small tapas place is a great find. From the outside it looked a bit touristic to me, but going inside changed my mind. It's a very cosy and very small restaurant with maybe around 8 tables or so. The tapas are delicious! I went with two friends and we ordered the chicken, mushrooms, octopus and mussels. Although I didn't have the octopus, I heard from my friends that it was good. The mushrooms and chicken were soo tasty! Their house wine was also pretty good. The mussels were the main attraction on our table, it was a good portion for three people (since we also had the other things) and had a very nice sauce. It was delicious! I had eaten mussels before (in Normandy, France) but not really with sauce, etc. it was very bland and I really didn't think it was worth putting up with the rather funky look of the mussels hahahaha so I didn't like it, but this place made me change my mind! They serve their tapas very "Spanish style" and I really liked it. You can choose from the menu, or choose at the counter where they have tapas for 4.50€ each. I'm giving the place three stars because they do re-heat the tapas and it's not fresh, and I think the outside signs could be a bit more authentic and less touristy. The good quality is ok. But it makes up for it with taste! I'll be going back and I actually keep craving their mussels all the time!

Restaurant Tip: You can order Tapas from the menu or go inside and pick your tapas choices from the two small glass cases on the bar.( This selection is different than the menu.) If this is your first experience with tapas, this is a good way to go as you can see exactly what you are about to get! These on average are less expensive than the menu at about 4.50E per dish. They are all excellent and the serving size is very generous...and so were the wine pours the day we were there!! The garlic aioli and farmers bread is a must! The staff of two did an excellent job rushing around taking care of all the tables.

Excellent tapas bar, hidden in the touristy area of Dam Square.

Excellent little tapas bar, hidden in the touristy section near Dam Square. We had the grilled langoustines, razor clams, and prawns, and they were fresh and delicious.

Crema Catalana made perfectly.

The tapas on the menu are typical Spanish, finding the ones that you would see in any average Spanish bar. Tia Rosa just made and presented them in a way that was not average. Both the presentation, with side salads, herbs and sauces made the tapas really nice and tasty. Besides that the service and the location are of the best you can get. Being situated on one of the nicest canals in Amsterdam centre, with the bridges lighted and barely any cars passing by, makes your diner even more special. The waiters very kind and accommodating. Overall a good experience and a good place to eat tapas. Note: even a Spaniard agrees with this!

We came in with a massive group and the staff was more than happy to help us out and cater to our needs. Getting a refill on our drinks was the only thing which took time but it wasn't unreasonable. For vegetarian stuff the green peppers were great as usual, but make sure to put salt on them. The tomatoes are also really tasty and patatas brava of course. The mushrooms were a little ordinary though. The paella looked really good and tasted so according to others even though I didn't try it. Will certainly go back with a smaller group to try out other dishes.

Fish, meat or vegetarian. All good. We tried a few different things like grilled sardines, patatas bravas, lamb chops, olives, stuffed eggs, chicken, gamba's pil pil. Everything was so yummy! This place really knows quality. I loved it, especially the lamb chops and the gamba's. Everything was for a fair price as well. If you order 2 dishes a person with your party (dishes will be like 6,50) and start of with some bread and olives, have about 2 drink it will cost you like like 22 each. Not much! I will certainly come back and try more veggie dishes next time because they looked great as well.
