I randomly had unscheduled stopover in Amsterdam - much to my delight - and so I looked to my fellow helpers for a place to eat. It ended up being a great decision, because Pata Negra was amazing. The divey, eclectic bar-restaurant was packed to the brim and full of energy. I was by myself, of course, so I grabbed one of the few remaining spots at the bar after a warm welcome and escort from The owner. He chatted with me a bit and then told the bartender to take good care of me. I ordered some sangria and a few tapas (empanadas, bacon wrapped dates and lamb steak bites) and soaked everything in. I read some of the messages carved into the walls and woodwork throughout the kitschy joint and people-watched across the tables tightly lined against the window. The empanadas and dates were tasty but the beef was tough and lacked flavor. I've only had bacon-wrapped dates once (I'm not too adventurous with food), and they were delicious. So comparatively, these weren't as good. Honestly, if the food was just one step higher, I'd give the joint five stars. Everyone around me seemed to enjoy their food, though, and lots of people were ordering what looked like creme brûlée. I was too full to order dessert, though. The owner came by again later to sit and chat with me for awhile - and take a shot (yikes!). Even though I was new to Amsterdam and was exploring by myself, he made me feel right at home. I stayed for another sangria, but ended up leaving after only because I wanted to explore more of the city in my limited time there. I'd definitely recommend checking out this place.

The food was great, the service was great, the view on the street was great and the sangrias were great. Ordered the shrimp and chicken ajillo, chorizo and spinach egg shrimp omelet, all were piping hot and notably fresh. Even the chocolate cake and creme' brûlée was good but I'm quite certain only the creme brûlée was made in house. Do not be discouraged by the outside appearance in that the food is really good.

Love the atmosphere at Pata Negra ! Reminds me of a tapas bar I visited in Spain last year :) so much comotion, laughter and great food ! Its not very vegetarian friendly, however, those who eat meat will be in carne heaven ! 5 tapas will cost you approx €40, its not cheap but the portions are decent sized. Love coming here to get my Spanish fix, highly recommend you visit one of their many branches ! Especially Utrechtstraat, love the interior :)

This place looks scary from the outside. If my friend hadn't recommended it I would've not gone in there. So glad we did, staff is super friendly, very good service. They were pretty busy but our food didn't take long. We had the steak, patatas bravas, chicken in tomato sauce and it was all really good!

I've been meaning to check out Pata Negra for a while, and when I saw the wicked cool building they are in on Utrechtsestraat I couldn't resist (plus I was having a drink across the street at Huyschkamer anyway). Atmosphere: 5/5 It's a hole in the wall with a rather large terrace (for the location). Cute, cozy, nice staff, quick service, really chilled out spot for a casual dinner, and super authentic - I could definitely imagine stumbling across this place somewhere in Madrid! Food: 3/5 I'm not a Spanish food expert by any means but I've traveled there enough to be familiar with the kinds of flavours and textures to be expected from tapas, and I have to say this was not it. The best things we ordered by far were the manchego cheese and the olives. And the bread that comes with the order. The calamares looked and tasted like they came out of a plastic bag, and the bacon-wrapped dates were good, but still tasted like they had been prepared a few hours ago. So I suppose my tip would be to stick to basics! Value: 2/5 The prices are the least authentic part of Pata Negra!! Obviously in Amsterdam I would expect to pay more for everything but I have to say I found the prices a bit crazy even by Amsterdam standards, for the quality of food. And the house wine was a bit pricey as well (again, for the quality). One more note: The menu is so difficult to read! I don't know why they chose such an impossible font, but I swear it took us 10 minutes to decipher it. And that's with English, Dutch AND Spanish knowledge between the two of us! ;) Overall: 3.5 - nice spot if you're in the area and in the mood for sharing a small dish. But I'm not sure I'd recommend it to a friend.

Quiet during the day on Sunday's. Everything we ate was good! Warning: menu is in Spanish and Dutch only, haha. We ordered (from favorite to still good): pulpo (cold octopus, olive oil, spice), jamon (signature cured ham sliced super thin), grilled vegetables, carne a la plancha (steak with fries, some fatty pieces), gambas ajillo (garlic shrimp.) Add the warm free bread with aioli they give you to start with, and that was enough for three of us! Would definitely come back again to try other things. Maybe at night time with some drinks ;)

Let's talk tapas in Amsterdam! Pata Negra! That's it! End of story! Shabby looks, buzzing place, AMAZING food! Spanish staff is very attentive, friendly and quick! We had very nice evening and got complimentary drinks! Get your friends and go have a blast! Sangria is a must! Jamon Iberico has to be in your order!:)

The tapas on the menu are typical Spanish, finding the ones that you would see in any average Spanish bar. Tia Rosa just made and presented them in a way that was not average. Both the presentation, with side salads, herbs and sauces made the tapas really nice and tasty. Besides that the service and the location are of the best you can get. Being situated on one of the nicest canals in Amsterdam centre, with the bridges lighted and barely any cars passing by, makes your diner even more special. The waiters very kind and accommodating. Overall a good experience and a good place to eat tapas. Note: even a Spaniard agrees with this!

Appetizers came first and the first thing that surprised me was that the calamari came in one huge piece. I loved the olive oil and pesto sauce that coated the calamari and it tasted fresh with just the right amount of chewiness, not too rubbery. I'd highly recommend this dish. The smoked ham appetizer was really just a slightly thicker version of prosciutto that still tasted quite good. Ham was extremely flaky and so different compared to American processed ham. The main dish was the fish and meat paella. There is all sorts of seafood in the paella, calamari, clams, mussels, shrimp, crawfish, and the meat is mostly just chicken. The rice is slightly tough, but didn't stick to one another. Seafood all tasted fresh and thankfully nothing was overcooked. The paella was quite large and extremely filling for 2. I'd caution ordering any other main dishes along with the paella.

I happily enjoyed the slightly toasted bread with the yummy home-made allioli that brought back memories of Spain. And also the main, Solomillo a la plancha, was fully to my taste, I really enjoyed these 2 tender, juicy steaks. The staff is genuinely friendly. Upon arrival, we didn't feel welcomed even checking in with a reservation. We asked for outside seating but they said they reserved us inside seating either at the bar or at the bar shelf by the window at the entrance door. Immediately, my husband and I felt that this was very much a locals place and they very much don't want tourists. (I get it, coined flipped, I live in South Florida) We decided to take the 2 bar seats on the quiet side of the bar. It gave us a view to the kitchen, which was the best part of the meal. I could see the absolute passion from the guys in the kitchen cooking and plating their love for food. Too bad the rest of the service from the bar was less than stellar. I probably wouldn't come back but I would recommend anyone local to check it out for the food above all. The clams had a wonderful broth that I wish there was a basket of bread to soak up the juice left over from the chorizo crumbles and meaty little clams. The skewers of roasted chicken thighs were crispy and well seasoned on the outside while being tender and juicy on the inside. So simply yet so complex. Just wish the service was more complex, or at least friendly.
