Kathy and I have been here many times in the past two years, and ALWAYS are amazed at the quality of the meals provided. Equally surprising is how they do so at such reasonable prices! Randy and Rachel are very active in the community, including giving struggling folks a chance to reimagine themselves through their internship program. Socially aware and excellent restraunteers who use fresh, locally grown ingredients in an imaginative way to entice and satisfy any appetite. I've had their Cuban several times and can honestly say it is the best I've had anywhere north of Little Cuba in Miami. Randy told me that he learned from a chef in Miami and continues to follow what he learned with every sandwich. The choices on the menu are varied, and I don't think it is possible to leave there hungry. A selection of beer and wine is available, as well as the usual soft drinks. The seating arrangement provides plenty of space between tables; they also have different games for you to play when you are not eating (a nice touch to keep the kiddos busy). A warm, inviting place that has to be one of my favorite in the Cape Fear region; Randy and Rachel are among the heroes of our city for the internship program as well as sharing their space once a month to share untold stories of the citizens of our area. I want so badly to give Foxes Boxes 5 stars. But each time I visited them I found myself shaving off a few points instead of adding. The name Foxes Boxes showed enthusiasm and creativity which digs right down to the serving of the meal with boxes, utensils etc. Love the way they present the meals. The first visit, after they had been open for a short time, was pretty stellar. The portions, while smaller than expected for the price, were well executed. We all felt the meal was thoughtful and locally sourced. However quickly became evident that the stress of a family-owned joint was already wearing on the chef as each time we visited...the quality began to drop off. Flavors not as rich and blended as before, marinades weak, and portions seemed to shrink even more. Which, for the price and simplicity of the food needed to stay right there on top. I am hoping that they just hit a little dip and spring back, because the ethos and community support shown on their Facebook page makes me happy. Their family and website shows a much needed vitality, social consciousness and spirited renegade thinking. It is this spirit that will encourage me and my friends to visit again in the future. read more

Such a great first experience. The owners (I'm assuming) were so welcoming and helpful through the whole experience. I had the turkey sliders with carrot salad and my friend had the falafel sliders and broccoli. Everything was great. I was apprehensive about the carrot salad because it's cooked with ginger and they said it would be a bit spicy. I got it anyway and was pleased. They kept checking on us to make sure we enjoyed everything and if we needed anything. I will definitely be going back to try the steak, which looked amazing! read more

If you are looking for healthy, fresh options that don't lack flavor, look no more! I tried Foxes Boxes for lunch a few weeks ago. I had a grilled chicken dish topped with melty, gooey brie cheese and a pear chutney. The chicken had a wonderful char on the outside and the creamy, savory brie in addition to the sweet pear chutney made my tastebuds just pop! I also had sauteed fresh green beans. The green beans were very crisp and sauteed in olive oil and topped with some adobo seasoning for a little added flavor. I was just so happy they were still crisp and not mushy and over cooked! This place speaks to my retro soul! I love the repurposing of an old building. Foxes Boxes has outfitted this space with mid century modern tables and chairs, art, and an array of books. The owners are very personable and helpful. They ask if you have visited before, hand you a menu, and then give details about the food offerings. Plus, they have vegetarian options! And, wine and beer! Each time, I was drawn to the flat bread pizza. It features the most delicious crust and plenty of cheesy goodness. I believe that the first time, I enjoyed the perfectly roasted vegetables. Tonight, I had the scrumptious potatoes. Your meal is served in a little box with a small glass jar that holds your silverware. Talk about an adorable place, wow! I went here recently with some friends on my lunch break. I loved the decor and feel of the place! I got the Pita Pizza Box w/ fruit. It was a decent amount of pizza too! The picture doesn't show it, but there are two more pieces of pizza under what it shown! The flavor of the pizza was so good! And the pita wasn't cardboard like, it had a decent flavor too. The fruit was extremely fresh and flavorful! I also had to try their homemade chocolate chip and no-bake cookies. They were each TO DIE FOR! The woman who rung up my order was extremely friendly and told me how she had just made the cookies I was about to devour. Now I'm craving the pizza again, so I'll have to go back soon ;) read more

Went to check out this place for a quick lunch and absolutely fell in love. When I walked in, I was greeted by the staff and welcomed into the restaurant. I must have looked like I was a first time customer because one of the staff members came to me with a menu and went over each food item. I was impressed! If I had any questions, she had already answered them. I proceeded to order the turkey burger sliders with carrot ginger salad. The sliders are topped with tomato, lettuce, cheese, and spicy mustard. The carrot ginger salad has shredded carrots, edamame, ginger, and red pepper flakes. The sliders were amazing! They had so much flavor. It can be easy to make turkey meat dry so I was very impressed with the taste and flavor of the sliders. The salad was great too. It had a mild spice from the red pepper flakes but the flavor was so good. It's a light side so I would definitely recommend it with the sliders. The ambiance of the restaurant is so chill. I don't have enough good things to say about Foxes Boxes! The space is beautiful and spacious, the food was incredible, Owner, Rachel came to our table after the rush slowed down and made sure we were all set. Also let us know that a new employee had made our wrap and so if it wasn't wrapped tightly, it wasn't normal, just an employee in training. Portions were massive! I ordered the steak and rice with broccoli, and despite having a massive appetite and hating to waste food, I couldn't finish it if I had tried! Everything was cooked perfectly, my friend had the chickpea wrap and loved it. Prices range from $6-$12 without any add ons. But their add ons are very reasonably priced. The portions are a bit small compared to others in the area, and the box concept made food a tiny bit difficult to eat, but those are minor complaints considering that the food is good and reasonably priced, and the space is fun. There is also a social justice focus for the space, which I appreciate. I hope their experiment succeeds! read more

I love checking out new businesses so of course, The Foxes Boxes was on my list. First impressions go a long way with me and everyone was super friendly and personable. They owner, I assume, walked me through the menu and then gave me a few minutes to make a decision. I chose the Kalabi steak entree with roasted potatoes. This dish was one of the more expensive things on the menu but it looked delicious and was well worth the price. The inside of the building is eclectic and modern yet still shows off the old architecture and open space. I got the food to go and despite it being made to order it was still very quick. Overall everything was wonderful and I can't wait to return and eat my way through the entire menu. read more

I finally made it to Foxes Boxes! I've watched it "in process and how fun to finally see it in person. We ended up having a late afternoon lunch so there was free parking out front and there were plenty of tables to select from. I had already selected my lunch - the Cubano; my friend went Edith the popular gourmet steak box and we both got the asparagus. Everything was flavorful and delicious. TFB is run by a husband and wife duo. The husband serves up delicious food and the wife provides amazing hospitality. TFB reminded me of some of favorite spots in Austin. Supporting TFB also means supporting the local community: a non profit is run in conjunction with the restaurant. Tip: you can't go wrong with the Kalbi beef. read more
