Buen Dia is a traditional Mexican breakfast restaurant that brings authentic Mexican food and culture to the east coast of North Carolina out of its two locations, Wilmington and Castle Hayne. The restaurant is especially known locally for its authentic Mexican breakfast dishes, birria, and chilaquiles. I gave it a try with some coworkers for the first time in the Wilmington location, a it was fantastic. The food was fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with care. I tried the Dovorciados eggs (two sunny side up eggs on top of a crispy corn tortilla with red and green salsa, separated by refried beans, and queso fresco.) with the Cafe de Olla. Everything was delicious. The staff was friendly and welcoming, and the atmosphere felt cozy and authentic. Easily one of the best breakfast and lunch spots in Wilmington. Wilmington' s best authentic Mexican breakfast can always be found at Buen Dia & is an absolute must visit. Today was not my first time eating here, and if I'm be truthful , every time I'm in town, I make it a point to stop by. They serve the kind of traditional Mexican breakfast I grew up loving, along with so many other delicious options. The staff is always warm and welcoming, serving every guest with the biggest smiles. You'll also often see the owner walking around as well, checking on tables and making sure everything is going smoothly, which adds such a personal touch. The restaurant itself is clean, beautifully decorated with cultural charm, and filled with the incredible aroma of fresh spices cooking in the kitchen. I always begin with their Café de Olla--a slow-simmered coffee made with raw brown sugar, cinnamon sticks, cloves, orange peel, and coffee. It's served hot, full of flavor, and not overly sweet. Honestly, it's the only coffee I'll happily drink without creamer or added sugar. This visit, I ordered the Tamal Montado: two tamales over a bed of creamy black bean sauce, covered with red salsa, then topped with a sunny side egg, avocado, Mexican sour cream, queso fresco, and cilantro. Every bite was rich, comforting, and packed with flavor. I finished the meal with a pan dulce, which paired perfectly with the whole experience. I skipped tortillas this time, but they also have a tortilla station where they're made fresh by hand and cooked to order--always a sign you're in the right place!! Wow, a great find. Very authentic dishes and flavors. One of the reasons Mexican would be my choice of cuisine if I could have only one is breakfast. I had the house special and it brought the right amount of heat. The place is in a strip mall; nevertheless, they've decorated it nicely. There is a bar and TVs, so it's far from fancy. The Jamaica was great, my favorite part of the experience. The burrito was just not worth the $15 they charge for it. From the presentation to the taste, it was not what you would expect, especially since there was a waitlist and a full restaurant on a Sunday afternoon. The red sauce it was served with tastes like tomato sauce from a can, with a sprinkle of salt. The dish only felt rounded out because I had asked for red onions. The eggs weren't flavorful, and none of the other aspects you'd expect in a Burrito Ranchero stood out since the bland eggs were all you could taste. The tortilla chips it came with were great and crunchy, but definitely not enough to justify the cost. Won't be coming back simply because I paid $15 for what should be a (at most) $10 burrito. read more

We were in Wilmington for a wedding and decided to try this spot after shopping...what a find! The vibe is lively and welcoming, a fun place to settle in with a drink. I had the watermelon margarita (so refreshing!) and my husband ordered a Michelada that was huge and delicious. The food was the real star. The birria meat was packed with flavor, and the sauce had just the right amount of heat with perfectly melted cheese. The divorciados with red and green salsa were both amazing, the green had a little extra kick, but together they balanced perfectly. The steak was cooked beautifully, with just the right char on the outside and juicy tenderness inside. On top of that, the freshly made corn tortillas tied everything together. An absolute hidden gem in Wilmington. They are open for breakfast and lunch and have a blend of traditional American brunch time dishes as well as Mexican dishes. I had the Chilaquiles de buen día and it was excellent and quite honestly was some of the best Mexican food I have had, period. The homemade chorizo was incredible and the habanero sauce spicy but not over powering. The food came out quick considering how busy they were and it is a great place to come for brunch with a variety of different drinks to try. Never tried their first location so this was my first order, order tamales, house special torta with steak, side of conchitas, desssert rompolote, and caffe de olla without sugar. Everything was very good and the staff were very nice. The only thing I didn't like as much was the caffe de olla. The coffee strength wasn't strong for my preference, otherwise I liked the cinnamon flavor. I would definitely get the torta again. It had so much flavor. The picked jalapeños reminded me of my favorite pickled jalapeños from a Mexican restaurant in Southern California. Bread was fresh and soft. I liked the red salsa flavor too, it was more liquid, not much tomato chunks. The tamale filling was shredded chicken. I didn't ask for a specific meat so not sure if you can choose another type of meat. You do have a choice of either green or red sauce. I went with the red sauce since the waitress said it was a little less spicy. Still had a tinge of spiciness, but very tolerable, maybe not for kids. Tamales came with lettuce, spiced avocado, and Mexican crema which I asked for on the side. Conchitas were soft slighty sweet Mexican bread (3 pieces). The rompolote dessert was a sweet dense corn bread like cake slice served with rompope, a sweet yellow colored sauce spike with alcohol. They were making some kind of drinks at the bar. Not sure what they were, but they looked really interesting. They have high chairs but limited tables to use them. Also have booster seats. read more

This is the best restaurant in Wilmington as far as I'm concerned. The thing I miss most about living in San Diego is the Mexican food and Buen Dia has finally filled that void in my life. This is a clean, organized, and very nice place to eat. Nothing is over seasoned. The music is loud but it is expected as it's the format. I cannot say enough good things about the quesabirrias. Sunday breakfast was so pleasant here. It's truly so beautiful inside! Wish I had decorations colors and tiles like this. The music and friendly staff make you feel like part of the family.
