"Good Mexican with a twist near downtown Wilmington" Came here on a Wednesday night for dinner at 6pm and were seated immediately despite it being a group of 5. The place was not very large but relatively full, so be wary of coming later unless you're OK waiting. The restaurant had a bit of a rustic look but clean & well maintained, and nice local art posted on the walls. Staff were welcoming and friendly, and a lot of the food was sourced locally. We started with a sweet potato- goat cheese "guacamole" appetizer. I split the Jefe's Arroz Con Pollo and the Carne Con Ancho with my son. My girlfriend got the vegan rellenos. Food came out in maybe 20 minutes. The ACP was very good but unusual. It came with a thigh and leg of chicken on top, and a big mix of flavors of food underneath-- coconut rice, black beans, pineapple salsa. Curiously no cheese. Very different from any ACP I've ever had. Overall, it was fine-- honestly, my son and I both felt it was too many flavors that overwhelmed each other. In contrast, the Carne Con Ancho was spectacular. The steak bits were cooked rare to perfection and absolutely melt in your mouth. The flavors of the arepa below it as well as the horseradish and other components blended beautifully and made for a wonderful dish. My girlfriend said the rellenos were nicely fried and the sweet potato puree was excellent-- a very hearty dish without feeling heavy. And we all also really liked the guacamole appetizer-- unusual yet delicious flavor (and no avocado). Price was fair-- this was definitely upscale, so not "cheap", but fair for what we got. Overall, I'd happily come back, and definitely would want that Carne Con Ancho again. I recommend. read more

Great service, great food, good ambiance, love this place! Try to go when friends are in town, they will be impressed.

I was seduced by the photos of the poblano pepper dish. Started dinner with chips and guacamole which is always safe. Guac was decent but the chips were too thick and almost burnt. Good in house tortilla chips are made from thin corn tortillas and they obviously didn't have a good supplier. Then continued with the black bean sweet potato empanadas. The empanadas themselves were fine but not all that flavored. There was way too much pineapple salsa on top so by the time I made it to the second empanadas themselves entire bottom was completely sogged out. And the chimichurri was under salted and not acidic enough to stand by the bright acidity of the pineapple. Then the star dish was the Vegan Relleno and why I chose to come to this restaurant to try it... but it was the biggest letdown. The quinoa black bean filling wasn't flavorful with only the natural black bean flavor present. The sauce drizzled on the pepper was good but not enough of it compared to the large amount of other things in the dish. The rice had zero coconut flavor as promised bad felt unnecessary with the quinoa already in the dish. And the worst part of all was the sweet potato puree was soooo out of place. It was too sweet. There was already sweet enough notes with the carrots and cabbage and the sweet potato pushed the dish way too sweet compared to the earthy flavor of the pepper. It really needed some sort of bold completely flavored savory or spicy sauce to complement the pepper rather than fight it. read more

Yum! Very cute and intimate restaurant with good service. All the dishes we tried were very tasty and flavorful. It can get a bit loud and I would recommend making a reservation because there aren't a ton of tables. I would've liked a slightly bigger entree portion for the price but I was still satisfied. WOW!!!!! Savorez is SENSATIONAL! The Latin American flavors with seasonal ingredients is a match made in heaven. I enjoyed every morsel of their carne con ancho over a crispy arepa, sautéed arugula, oven dried tomatoes, caramelized onions, cheesy Gruyère, paired with horseradish crema and anchovies balsamic BBQ sauces. The flavor of this "jerk chicken" was not even in the meat of the chicken and the blackening on the outside zero flavor just blackened... absolutely will never go here again. Had a late lunch reservation and was seated right away. Small dining area. Our waiter was pleasant and took our drink order. The OG Margarita was made fresh, no premix, outstanding! Fried flounder tacos were crispy and moist and very tasty, however the slaw on the tacos was far too watery and had the use a napkin to mop up so it would get too soggy. Yuca fries were crispy with a salt and pepper seasoning and aïoli, and were outstanding! Black bean soup was generous with great flavors of lime, cumin and chili powder. Rich and filling! Ate lunch here on Monday around 11:45 AM and there were still plenty of tables in the small restaurant open. Parked in their small parking lot. Started off with empanadas, which comes as two pieces and we had an option of choosing two different flavors. Went with chorizo and goat cheese and smoked tuna with Gruyère cheese, red pepper. I am not a huge fan of goat cheese, but the chorizo and goat cheese empanada goat cheese flavor was not strong at all. Both of the empanadas were fried well so very crispy. One came with a smoky chipotle based thick sauce and the other one came with a small portion of refried black beans. Tacos were flavorful, I ordered churrascco and my partner had the lunch special kicki' chicken tacos. What disappointed me was how cold the corn tortillas were, which made them brittle. Good thing they served each taco with 2 pieces of corn tortillas. I wish the steak had crispy bits but they were still good. We chose maduros and yucca frites as our sides for the tacos, which were excellent. The yucca frites may have been the best yucca fries I have ever had. Perfectly crispy on the outside and soft, starchy-like on the inside. We asked for their housemade hot sauce, which wasn't bad, but not actually spicy. Stopped in for brunch at this restaurant on a Sunday morning and the food was amazing! The restaurant describes itself as "Local Fare, Latin Flair." The brunch menu has about 8 entrees on it and there were a few specials on a separate menu. I ordered the grouper tacos (one of the specials) and it tasted amazing! The grouper was perfectly fried and the mango chutney on top of the tacos was a nice touch. If someone said this was the best restaurant in town, I'd believe them. This was also the best meal we've had in a while. My family ordered one of each special and I got the vegan rellenos. The flavor profile of each dish was delicious and some of us went on a trip with the dish. My sister (not a critic, just a foodie) said it deserves a Michelin star. The caliber of this restaurant's menu alone is impressive, with some fun dish names like Scallapagos and Super Mah-Hio. The service was great. Always a must to stop here when visiting Wilmington! The food is so fresh and the flavors are amazing! I went during my most recent trip during the lunch hour and it wasn't too busy. The service was prompt and attentive. Each visit, I try to order something new but the sweet potato guacamole is a must order! It's unique and the flavors are bold--filled with sweet potatoes, avocados, goat cheese, cilantro, onions, tomatoes, etc. it's a good balance of sweet and savory. The Croat quinoa fish tacos were excellent as well. They came out piping hot (as well as the yucca frites). The fish truly was crispy and topped with avocado, citrus slaw (yum!), and chimichurri ranch. Lots of bold flavors that taste so delicious! This is always one of the highlights of my trip whenever I visit. The restaurant is very small and intimate so it fits all needs from casual hangouts to dates. I try to hit up Savorez every time I'm in Wilmington which is regrettably not nearly as often as I'd like too. The first time I ate at Savorez was truly a life changing experience and it was all thanks to the guacamole sampler. Up until this moment guacamole was one thing.. mashed avocados with some stuff in it (obviously the stuff differs from recipe to recipe so I'm just saying stuff to be simple). Savorez turned my whole idea of what guacamole could be though. Sweet potato and goat cheese guacamole??? I'm sorry... what??? I absolutely cannot get enough of this adorable, corner restaurant in my neighborhood. If you are looking for the freshest to death empanadas you have found your spot! The chicken and goat cheese is an absolute slapper in the face of deliciousness. Normally I don't order extra salsas, but the one here are definitely worth it! Get the salsa flight, the pineapple one will send you. The tacos always hit and with eclectic combos like Gruyère and chimichurri together with the steak are my favorite. Staff is always upbeat and friendly and when I was unsure of what I wanted to drink, they had this delicious cranberry mule like drink that hit the spot. Do t ever forget to order the yucca frites. The restaurant is small, decorated kind of homely with a few tables and the staff were very friendly. It gave the feeling of getting a really good home cooked meal. To start off, their drinks were incredible. The margaritas were some of the best I've had. We ordered the salsa sampler and two full orders of the chicken empanadas and the chorizo empanadas. Very unique pairing of flavor with these but they were to die for! For entree my partner got a fish special. Cooked to perfection! And I got the jerk chicken. Cuisine: Flavor packed spice-loaded rubs on the jerk chicken unfolded on my senses with complex notes of smoke coming through the tender meat which sits atop a bed of bean/rice/pineapple chowder with cream drizzled about. The blackened crust of the tuna also doesn't disappoint. Seared medium was done correctly. Fork tender fresh fish! The use of sweet n savory with a hint of sour on the quinoa side was clutch. We closed out with a chocolate flan that was accentuated by a scoop of ganache with epic richness and chunks of Mexican praline littering the top. The flan was wrapped in a raspberry syrup. The restaurant has a nice ambiance with lots of vibrant artwork. The food and the service, however, were very disappointing. The black bean soup tasted like sweet curry, maybe coconut. The Churrasco Taco had zero flavor; literally tasted like eating air. The side bean salad was good; black and white beans with a light vinegar sauce. I also asked for hot sauce to help add some flavor to the tacos, but the hot sauce also tasted like curry. None of these ingredients are listed on the menu and made for a very confusing flavor palate that I couldn't finish. The most disappointing part was the waiter never actually checking in to see how the meal was. Once the food was delivered, he never stopped by until it was time for the check to be dropped. I never had the chance to express that I wasn't happy with the meal. I was brought the check with my full meal still on the table and the blonde male waiter, who never told me his name, never even questioned why my full, uneaten meal was on the table. As I gave him my credit card to pay, I said, "just so you know I didn't like any of this" and his response was "I'm sorry about that" as he walked away with my credit card. read more

When we left at 8:30, there was still a 30 minute wait. The restaurant is quite small, so it can't accommodate a lot of guests. The dishes are individually and attentively prepared and you don't want to rush through them. Tables are fairly close together, and it does get warm during the heat of the day. Plan to take your time, enjoy your meal, and don't go there starving, and you will have a beautiful dinner. Food was definitely worth the wait! read more
