Stayed overnight here and had dinner. A unique place for being in Elkins. The motel style rooms are very simple, nothing fancy but have everything you need at very reasonable price. The food overall is quite good. We did the tasting menu. Everything was at least decent, nothing was bad. They have a decent drink menu, well stocked bourbon selection. The service is excellent, they were not completely booked when we were there, but fairly busy and everything was prompt/on time for us. They change the menu which is also nice, our meal is from the Summer 2024 menu, may be worth being aware of if you're looking for something on older reviews. If you don't mind spending the money, definitely worth a stop here.

It's hard to put my finger on my favorite part of my most recent trip to 'the forks': the view, the food, the bar, and the hosts are all fantastic. A word about the hosts. I chose that word after considerable thought. The folks at the forks aren't servers, bartenders, and greeters. The folks are hosts. They are proud of this place. They want you to enjoy your time here. The view: see the pics. You'll not find a more beautiful view in WV. You'll be sitting on Kelly mountain looking over at Bickell's knob with multiple ridges rolling between. The bar: the cocktails use craft syrups made in house. The lavender blueberry martini And ginger bourbon martini were highlights for us. Also notable is the whiskey selection. It's a bar for the aficionado. I'm sure there are whiskies for the 'Tater hunters' under the bar but what impressed me most were the hard to find bottles that aren't well known, aren't expensive, and are amazing. This is an amazingly well curated collection. The food: everything on the menu is well thought out. The pancetta in the risotto, the use of wild mushrooms that are foraged in the areas around the restaurant, scratch made crackers with the summer green salad. The proteins were universally wonderful. I had the filet and my wife had the morel chicken. Again both dishes featured wild local mushrooms. The deserts were thoughtful and delicious. The peach gratin was classic but the chocolate cheese cake on white cake crust? Come on man! How do you how not over cook the white cake and still have cheese cake set perfectly? I don't know. This is why they get to cook and create for a living and I don't. It was pretty amazing! Keep in mind that my photos represent tasting menu portions. The menu is high res enough to zoom in I believe. Full dish descriptions can be found there.

Realizing Elkins was the last point of civilization on the way from Pittsburgh to snowshoe, we trusted Yelp and gave this spot a try. We were not disappointed. We were there after dark so it was very difficult to find and once there it was very nondescript outside, but inside it had a very cozy vibe. Fireplace was roaring. It is a surprisingly upscale menu. We had the charcuterie board which was just ok for the price, but each of our entrees were awesome. We had pork cutlets, chicken and mushrooms, and the filet. Each were visually appealing and tasted even better. The bar had a number of unique options. We finished with apple strudel and peanut butter cheesecake. Service was attentive. The price is north of what I would think a remote restaurant could support, but the entrees were at the level of the price points. If you are in the area this place is definitely worth a try.

Amazing craft cocktails. This was Dandelion Martini.

Amazing craft cocktails. Beautiful setting. We had a cool spring breeze and chose to eat outside. Our server turned the outdoor heater on for us. Vegetarian Delight was delicious-best cauliflower ever. Halibut and creamy potatoes were delightful. Great service. We showed up early and were seated immediately with a smile.

    The view

This was the only option around here that didn't fully disturb me. The atmosphere was really nice! I got the vegetarian delight. It was what it's name claims to be....delightful! Although my mind was kinda blown because I feel like I was tasting flavors I've never tasted in my life before. The waiter was so nice she gave us free grapefruit sorbet. And you could tell it was really grapefruit. Take that as you will. ‍ My friend got the Spinach Salad with no bacon, and they decided to add in beets for more flavor! She enjoyed it thoroughly. My mother got the Red Snapper she says and I quote; "It was smooth and creamy and it melted in my mouth. The corn cake was delicious" Overall a nice experience very expensive though. I think it was worth it though! Yummy yummy!

Spectacular food, great service, and a wonderful ambiance. Big city cuisine tucked away with a mountain view. Prices are a little high but justified by the quality of the food and the service.

Dinner served on our balcony with an amazing view!

One of our favorite meals of the trip! It was delivered to our room with all of the extras you would expect at a nice restaurant! The food was outstanding! We had the grilled flat iron steak and spinach artichoke tortellini. So glad we didn't skip out on dessert! The derby pie was delicious! We are so sad we live 8 hours away! We can't wait to visit again!

"Whiskey, Wings, and Pool Sharks: A Local Survival Guide"…read more If you find yourself in Elkins craving good food, cold drinks, and a side of character, roll on down to Whiskey River. The place is pure West Virginia charm with just the right mix of country grit and friendly mischief. The food? Fantastic. The wings are sauced like somebody back there actually cares, and the burgers taste like they've seen a grill before, not a microwave. But be warned: the real action happens at the pool tables. You might think, "I'll shoot a quick game while I wait on my fries." Next thing you know, you're three games deep against a guy named Buck who swears he's "rusty" but just ran the table faster than you can say cue ball. That's when you realize the fries were ready 20 minutes ago -- and you've just been hustled out of your dignity (and maybe a round of shots). Pro tip: If someone offers to "let you break," kindly decline and protect your pride. Order another beer, tip the bartender, and enjoy the show -- because watching the locals play pool here is better entertainment than half the stuff on TV. Whiskey River is one of those rare places where the food's hot, the folks are real, and the laughter's louder than the jukebox. Just remember: eat first, then play pool. You'll thank me later.

I am a pescatarian athend the menu had some interesting fish and seafood items. I got there on a weekday during happy hour and sat at the bar. Since it was half off for happy hour I started with the Smoked Trout Dip which was one of the items I really wanted to try. The dip came out really quickly and was a very nice looking plate, crostini and cucumber slices were nicely arranged around the scoop of dip covered with crushed nuts. The dip was decent, although flavors were a bit muted; I was hoping for more of the smoke flavor and having the trout make a bigger impact. Not bad, but not an item I would order again. Next up I tried the Smoked Salmon Poutine. A good sized portion of sweet potato fries topped with a generous amount of house smoked salmon, feta cheese and creme fraiche sauce. All of the ingredients were high quality and well prepared, however the dish didn't quite land as poutine since all of the elements other than the fries were served cold which muted the flavors and meant that the cheese didn't melt. This dish missed all of the hardiness and warmth that I associate with poutine. I came to Smoke on the Water hoping for big flavors and while the food was good and they used quality ingredients I just found the flavors to be a bit mild an underwhelming for me. A bit of a disappointment, of course your experience may vary, especially if you are having the actual BBQ.
