Grilled Pork Tenderloins with Grilled Peaches and Salad
    Billy T.

From the outside, Gateway isn't the most impressive looking place in the world. Inside, it's more of what you'd picture for a diner. I came on a Saturday evening, and the place was about half full. My first impression was how cheap the food was- sandwiches ran you about $7 whereas dinner plates were about $10-$12. I ordered the grilled pork tenderloin, which came out pretty quick (same with the rest of the food). My food ended up being quite disappointing. The salad came with a raspberry vinaigrette that tasted almost medicinal. The peaches were average, and the tenderloins were very small and seasoned very poorly. The rest of my group also was not impressed with the food. Our bill ended up being quite cheap, but I really wish I went somewhere else.

Having worked up a serious appetite driving up to Spruce Knob & back down with my hands clutched to the steering wheel (ok-it wasn't THAT bad;), I was ready for some goood comfort food! Fortunately right at the bottom of the hill was the Gateway Restaurant! Not a lot of food choices in the area, but it turns out this little culinary oasis fills the bill! Walked in to find a typical diner setting - seated & drink orders taken quickly. Plenty of good choices, but I honed right in on the Open-Faced Roast Beef Sandwich...smothered with gravy! Per-Fect! Good beef, good potatoes, GOOD GRAVY! Great relaxed atmosphere & great grub! Plenty of other diners here as well while we where there on a late Friday afternoon - and for good reason! If you're rolling down the mountain ..or US 33 & happen past - give it a try!

Garbage Omelet was absolutely incredible. I asked for the potatoes on the side vs in the omelet and a bowl of gravy to smother the omelette in. Great choice! Scrambled eggs with a side of grits were just as good my daughter ordered. My wife ordered two pancakes, scrambled eggs, and country ham. We all walked away full and ready for a day of hiking. The service was very prompt and super friendly. If you are in the area this place is worth visiting!

Let me tell you this I had been dine out many places because I love to travel but this place was the worse place this eatery I can't say restaurant I can't even grade it. We hiked we we so hungry .First server wasn't so friendly we were not greeted. It is not an issue.Fryer is not working we okay with it ,want to order we don't serve weekdays . Do you have home made chilie?Yes I wish she said it was can . Ordered cheese steak with mashed potatoes. She served everything together chilie was cold ,tasteless, right from the can . Even my 10 years old could cook better cheesesteak I believe they forgot to cook n the green peppers torpido roll was stale and cold . We had no choice . She never came to table to ask how was everything ?I asked for refill for my iced tea she comes with tea try's to fill me empty glass and I asked ice she acted like she was doing me favor . Her hair should be bundle you serving food . Fixing and doing your side work some kinda dressing look like Russian dressing she was keep licking her fingers we grossed out. Do your work in the kitchen not front of customer . Totally horrible I was so disappointed we paid even tipped her 20 percent she needs to learn how to take care her customers . Bad business and his is not West Virginia hospitality been other places she was rude . Never going back next day we ate Yokum nice and hot meal friendly people .

Roast pork with sweet potatoes and buttered beans( front), chicken pot pie with sweet potatoes and buttered spinach ( back)

My husband and I came here twice while in the area - once for dinner and once for breakfast. The staff was all wearing masks and there were multiple COVID safety measures in place. We were the only two people in the restaurant both times we came. Dinner: Roast pork - a bit dry, the sides seemed like they were both out of a can ( sweet potatoes and buttered beans) Chicken pot pie special - underwhelming and a bit disappointed that there was no crust on top, again the sides seemed like they both came out of a can ( sweet potatoes and buttered spinach) The cornbread, however, was excellent. Also, the door came out instantly which kind of firms up that the food was not fresh. Breakfast: Much more enjoyable and definitely much fresher. The garbage omelet was great and huge. Overall decent food for a small price !

We loved this little family restaurant! We stumbled across this gem on a motorcycle ride and loved it for several reasons: 1. The restaurant was clean. Visiting during coronavirus, they had taken significant precautions to sanitize their tables and help guests feel safe. 2. The menu is extensive and we were all excited to find some thing we wanted to eat and loved. We recommend the sweet potato fries and the chicken and french fry salad. 3. Customer service was excellent. We chatted at length with the owner, who was personable and helpful. She told us about the area and sites to see on our adventure. We've considered coming back to visit again! Next time I'm ordering pie!

We stopped in for lunch before driving up to Spruce Knob. They have a great menu selection and a lot of homemade pies and cobbler. The 100% beef cheeseburger deluxe is delicious and the onion rings are scrumpious. All was cooked to perfection and they don't skimp with the toppings. Their sweet tea tastes great and is actually sweet. Our server was also great. She checked on us often and kept our tea glass full.

Stopped in here after a day of climbing Seneca Rocks. Located about 12 minutes from the rocks, this place is definitely a gem. Nothing fancy, just great food and service! I had the roast beef on bread with mashed potatoes and green beans and finished the meal with a piece of pumpkin pie which was so incredibly good!!! All the pie looked amazing! Like most places in this area, there is no cell service for Verizon users.

Friendly staff, good home cooking. Be sure to save room for pie, which change daily!!

Solid spot. The best place to eat in the area. It's a toss-up between Gateway and Yokum's but there is really no comparison. If you possibly can please please please eat here. The place is spic and span and super duper charming. The ladies running this place run a tight ship. The food is great. The pies are homemade. I had the butterscotch pie with mile-high merengue and he had the blackberry cobbler. Both were delicious. I could order everything on the menu. You can get a satisfying dinner meal with 2 sides for $10. You can't beat that.

The coleslaw was finely shredded, which was a pleasant surprise, and dressed in the regular mayo sauce. The tartar sauce was the only thing mediocre seeing as it wasn't that tangy or acidic, it was pickley, which I like pickles, but I want my tartar sauce not that pickley. Now, as for why I only give it two stars. I came in with a group of 12 for lunch at about 1. I know this can be a bit overwhelming, but I don't think they had properly trained for scenarios like this. We talked to a waitress/host and she had said that they are doing tables in sections, which we were like, "We understand and would be ok if you had to split us into two tables," but I just don't think she knew what to do. So, she asked her manager, I presume, and they ended up putting tables together to accommodate us, and turned it into a teaching moment saying, "Anyone can do this" in reference to putting available tables together to seat a large group such as ours. After we were seated and had gotten our menus we put our drink orders in, which came out within a fair amount of minutes. We put in our food orders about 5 minutes later. Nothing too customized, just normal cheese, no cheese, sub regular fries for sweet potato. She took our order and never came back to our table until the food came out. This was a good 50+ minutes. I understand food for a large group can have a long wait time, but part of the service industry is giving updates and refreshing drinks. Other tables had came and went during the time we were there, it was quite bothersome. We had someone go up and ask about our food since we were all hungry and a bit ticked off. Soon after that we got what we ordered. Well, mostly at least. One person had ordered the portobello sandwich and that comes with sweet potato fries according to the menu. They came with regular for her plate. Not that she complained, the regular turned out more crispy than the sweet potato. It would have been nice to know in advance that they would have to sub it if they had ran out of sweet potato fries however. We asked for refills and once we got them she brought ketchup, asked if we needed anything else, and left us alone again. Our server along with seeming new, also had a tired/I don't like my job vibe the whole time. At the end of our meal, we got the check with 18% gratuity already set as the tip since we had a large group. The food was good, but I don't think we'll be back for our next big family trip up here. It seemed like they did best with smaller groups 2-4. Just make note if you're coming up here with a large party.

The menu seems to be all over the place. I wouldn't call the cuisine any particular genre since there were items that categorically fall under "Mediterranean" as well as "Asian-fusion". Two things in particular that didn't make sense to me. The tofu on the Mediterranean bowl. Tofu marinated in soy sauce is not what comes to mind when I'm thinking of any country in the Mediterranean. Also, the tasting menu has an option for an entree choice of veal shank. I was informed there would be an upcharge since it's a pricier menu item, which is totally acceptable. What I was not prepared for was a giant cut of meat (it had to have been 10oz or more) with a huge bone still attached. The portion did not fit with a tasting menu. Luckily, my husband has the appetite of a small horse so he finished it.

The inside reminds me of a Chili's or Ruby Tuesday, but a bit darker. I think it's a nice atmosphere, appropriate for date night, a group, a family, etc. Our server (who has worked here for 3 years) was friendly and efficient. To start, we ordered a bowl of yesterday's soup special (She crab) and a small order of boiled shrimp. The soup was excellent, creamy, and with small pieces of crab throughout. The shrimp (six in the small order) were prepared well and came with a tangy cocktail sauce. The server brought over a loaf of their complimentary bread, which is actually three breads together in a single loaf. The bread was good (I preferred the dark loaf part) and came with a peach butter. We were told that the butters change periodically. The butter had pieces of peach in it (!) and we enjoyed the novelty. Our server mentioned that they also have a pistachio butter and maple butter. Yum. I ordered a salad with the balsamic vinaigrette dressing on the side. The salad itself was good - fresh, with crisp lettuce, tomato, cucumber, apple, almond pieces, etc. Then there was the dressing. Although I mixed the salad dressing in the cup before tasting it, when I did taste it, it was almost all oil with no discernible vinegar or other flavor. I kept stirring and tasting and nothing. So I abandoned the dressing. For entrees, my partner ordered the charbroiled salmon in herb butter with a side of broccoli. The salmon was prepared well and very tasty. I ordered the mahi-mahi, with the sun-dried tomato butter sauce on the side. The mahi-mahi was well prepared and tasty on its own. Honestly, I tasted the sun-dried tomato butter sauce and it was essentially whipped butter. I didn't think it added anything to the entree so I didn't use it. The potato came with butter and sour cream on the side. The potato was very good. Although we were full and not planning on dessert, the server came over with small cups of peppermint ice cream, calling it a "palate cleanser." It was very good and a nice touch. Other than the salad dressing and the sauce for the fish, it was an excellent meal in a nice atmosphere with good service. When we were leaving at around 7:00 pm, the line was out the door.
