Really cool, small space. Very friendly, you can tell it's a staple in the area with staff & customers greeting each other by name. A simple holler breakfast with some biscuits & gravy on the side. Decided to load up early in the day . Tasty, stick to your bones breakfast. So good. Only complaint is the bacon wasn't very crispy but good nonetheless. (Didn't order it crispy so...) Really impressed with the warmth of the place and the people. Recommended getting off the beaten path to check out this gem.

Stopped in today with my momma who lives nearby to look at the cute little decorative gourds inside. We didn't eat but the menu looked good and it's larger with more seating inside than it looks. The staff were really friendly and they had some cool items for sale around the back across from the kitchen like local honey, maple syrup, snacks and drinks, and outdoor-themed goodies like mugs and cups and practical things like scarves and cutlery and matches. It's kinda in the middle of nowhere so if you're here you either live here or you're passing through but it's a small gem off the beaten path for sure.

    Italian sub to go

I have wanted to try Gertie's since a friend in Richmond told me about it. I was out hiking in the area this morning and stopped by for a sandwich after the hike. Nice, clean little place run by a young couple who were very nice. There is quite a bit of seating for such a small place, but I imagine this little gem is packed on the weekends especially. People have written notes all over the walls in there. It has that sort of vibe, so if you are going to Vesuvius for fine dining, move on.... I ordered an Italian sub to go so I could take it up on the parkway. They were not busy since it was before noon on Thursday when I showed up. I was offered all the options on my sub so it was a really custom build! Really good sub, good value. Loaded with meat, lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, oil and vinegar, some mayo. I will bring a friend or two the next time for a couple beers and a meal. You cannot go wrong with Gertie's, even though it is the only place to eat in the area. I am looking forward to trying it again soon. Great hike, great little restaurant, great trip back to Waynesboro on the Parkway.

Our take-out meal before sitting around the campfire on this cool and starry evening. We both opted for this totally loaded BLT and chips. Calling in our order before 7PM was a snap. This quaint little place was busy, friendly and warm. The BLT was packed full with (guess what) - Bacon, Lettuce & Juicy Tomato. With the perfect touch of mayo, salt & pepper. Great little place!

Gertie's steak cheese! Delicious! Great stop and wonderful owners!!!!

Great service and steak and cheese was outstanding! Onion rings yummy!!!! Hope to see them again!

    Signing the wall at Gertie's

Gertie's is a must stop place to eat! Found this place by chance and it was the best find. The place is a gem of a find. The waitress was super friendly and quick to take our order and bring drinks. The food was spectacular, wife ordered the cheese steak sub with fries I got the chicken BLT sandwich with onion rings. Both sandwiches were massive and so delicious. We also got fried pickles which was basically a jar worth of pickles served fried and fresh! The special sauce was so good too. The ambiance was perfect, the restaurant looks small from the outside but has plenty of seating, the coolest thing is they allow you to sign the walls and put your initials up. I would recommend gertie's everyday of the week to people.

    Delicious homefries... wanted more!

It's in Lexington, home of VMI, and the shop itself is diagonal from a post office built in 1911 with large columns lining its edifice. Sometimes, when college students leave great reviews, that means good food that isn't too expensive. True here, especially for what you get: generous servings on amazing bakery breads. I had the "Sorry Charlie" on a slice of focaccia -- topped with tomato slices and melted cheese and a satisfyingly crunchy, warm crust, with a simple but nicely refreshing black bean and corn salad. Dessert treats are also worth a splurge. The people couldn't be friendlier with customers of all ages enjoying themselves. (And they have a coffee bar. And a "speakeasy"!)

I also got The Yardbird sandwich after the server recommended it. It's basically just chicken salad and lettuce between a ciabatta roll, but it was simple and great. And what the heck: I can't visit a bakery that has multiple sweets without getting one. I also listened to the advice of the server when she recommended the orange scone. She was right again! It was tender and tasted like a Froot Loop. Blue Sky is located on the corner of a busy street. There are lots of tables, but if you can, sit at the bar that looks out onto the street to see the hustling and bustling college town.

    Goshen County Store

The Goshen Country Store, or it's more commonplace name "Tammy's" has apparently been alluding me…read morefor some time. Those in-the-know about this pocket-size convenience store have been venturing there for breakfast sandwiches for more time than I'd like to know. More than I'd like to know, because each summer season that my cohorts have frequented Tammy's and haven't told me is akin to a knife in my Caesar-ed back. ***** Which reminds me of one of my favorite Roseanne Quotes: Jackie Harris: [while reading a newspaper] Roseanne, listen to this. "Utah Housewife Stabs Husband 37 Times". Roseanne Conner: I admire her restraint. ***** So, let's talk about what Tammys sells before we get into the breakfast sandwiches. That's gonna be a lengthy discussion. It's a fairly eclectic assortment of small grocery items like jam, soy sauce, canned veg and fruit, and canned meats. Aside from that they have a plastic blue tarp for sale, a sign that shows a gun pointed at you which reads "Warning: There is nothing here worth dying for", and a mix of other signs with southern flare and prints of animal paintings that look as if torn from the front of 1000 piece puzzle boxes. But, if I had to guess, I would venture that they make most of their money in way of cigarettes, dip (it is the country), beer, and one of the most freakin' delicious breakfast sandwiches you're gonna shove down your gullet. Ok let's do it: So, Tammy's has a small "kitchen" in the back left of the store, and I purposefully put kitchen in quotes because really it's a couple of griddles, a toaster, and single burner or two. And somehow, by some grace of G-d, or some hyper magical process, she puts out one of the most delicious breakfast sandwiches ever. The biscuit is a perfectly toothsome, shape retaining, soft vehicle for perfectly cooked eggs, an expertly melted slathering of good ole' American cheese, and semi thick cut bacon that is at the nirvana stage of bacon that some find so hard to attain. It's one of those sandwiches that you eat like the owl in the old tootsie pop commercial. 1 bite, 2 bites, where the hell did this sandwich go? If someone saw me eating that sandwich... they might have thought I just got out of a long stint as a prisoner of war, was pretending to be Eleven from Stranger Things, or was simply practicing some sort of pelican method for an upcoming eating competition. So... I was headed down to Asheville for a wedding and decided to stop in Goshen on my way down to North Carolina and on my way back. So I was there for 2 days, guess how many breakfast sandwiches I had... the answer is three. Not only did I try the breakfast sandwiches, I had to venture a little deeper into the menu when I also stopped by for lunch during one of those 2 days. I got the chicken salad sandwich which was quite tasty and looked quite appealing and perfectly put together. Think... what would the replicator on the Star Trek enterprise make you if you had asked for a chicken salad sandwich. So... how does Tammy do it? I'm not sure. Is she making the biscuits in house, is it local bacon, is it just a powerful innate instinct for cooking her proteins perfectly. I can't tell you one or the other. There is one thing I know for sure though: It gave me one more reason to miss being at Goshen this summer.
