Had a really pleasant experience at the Smokehouse BBQ at Blackwater lodge. I had the spinach salad and pulled pork sandwich (which also has onion rings and a generous slice of brisket on it. The salad was delicious, generous and fresh. The sandwich came with baked beans, Coleslaw and a cornbread muffin. All were really good and of generous size. I also had a local draft beer and another in my party had a gin and tonic. Another in my party got the pot roast (with real mashed potatoes, broccoli and a side salad. Again, generous size and all prepared very well. The third in our party got a burger and fries...he fancies himself a bit of a burger/fry connoisseur and said it was a really good burger and fries--only critique was he might take a couple of the red onions off the burger as they were 'fresh' and a bit strong. Despite it being off season and commensurately less staffing, service was prompt, courteous and accurate. I had the pot roast the first night, and it was exceptional. Great flavor and very tender. The next day I tried the Philly for lunch(no photo), and it was very good. I would get it again, but I rarely find a Philly that I don't enjoy. On the last day we did the breakfast buffet. The potatoes, bacon, blueberry pancakes and gravy were all very good. The sausage was disappointing and the biscuits were bad. I believe they were the frozen time. Very hard on the outside and no fluff in thr middle. Pizza, cheese sticks, grilled cheese and soup. Pizza is pretty lousy would definitely not recommend that. Cheese sticks very standard frozen deep fried, average. Grilled cheese is a big miss on trying to do a fancy gourmet grilled cheese with burned cheese on the outside of the bread, I cannot recommend that either. I reserved three rooms for my family and my two brother's families. We all had been to the state park many times growing up as children, but this was the first time any of us had stayed here. I reserved three canyon view rooms, which was preferable over the parking lot views. The rooms were very modern and comfortable, having all been recently renovated. The Smokehouse restaurant was very convenient, reasonable priced, and friendly staffed. There was a nice gift shop, a coffee bar in the lobby (which could have used more tea than just Lipton), ice machines, conference rooms, an elevator, king and queen suites, a pool, fitness center (which oddly doesn't open until 0800), and surprisingly...a game room. The only negatives, and why I docked them one star, is that most of the front desk staff were pretty rude and the parking lot and entrance could definitely use some updating. Additionally, the stained shingle roof needs to be replaced with either a more functional and esthetically pleasing shake or metal roof. read more

I visited The Smokehouse at Blackwater Falls after a hike, looking forward to a good post-hike meal, but was incredibly disappointed. The food was subpar at best. The ribs were dry, came in tiny portions (3-4 small pieces), and looked like they were microwaved. The potato skins were cold and tasted freezer-burned. The grilled cheese was overloaded with cheese and had one side completely burnt. The French onion soup was far too salty to enjoy. The waitress here was super kind and came around a bunch of times to ask if we enjoyed the food. To top it off, everything was overpriced--probably because it's part of a resort. The only redeeming features were the free EV/Tesla chargers out front and the potential for a nice outdoor seating view, though the rain kept us inside. Sadly, the food and value made this a spot I wouldn't recommend or return to. read more

Came to the Smokehouse for lunch today. The restaurant had a great atmosphere where you could look out the windows and see all the leaves changing and Mountain views. The French Onion soup was phenomenal and the best part of the meal. The service was terrible, it almost seemed like they didn't have anyone managing the restaurant, the staff wasn't very attentive and never checked back in with us. Had to grab our own to go box and had to find the server to get our check. I saw 3 servers a hostess and two what I thought to be servers doing side work, but didn't see anyone managing. read more

I'll start by saying the restaurant as actually called the Smokehouse - specializing in BBQ & that it does. The ambiance is more that of a hotel & convention center dining area. Service was painfully slow - I believe the staff was just overwhelmed by the influx of people meandering in after spending the day in the park as we did. That being said - the brisket was amazing...so 5 stars for the brisket, 2 for service. Wait staff was helpful...if you got their attention ...it may be that we were there in what may still be the off-season (mid-May) - hopefully, more summer staff will help. Fortunately we were content to relax from our day of running up & down hills looking for waterfalls ;) Nice little gift shop, too - which is part of the lodge. It was great food, good service and a beautiful place to eat! The waitress brought us a pitcher of Diet Pepsi and sweet tea so we could get our refills quickly. Daughter got burger and curly fries, hubby got burger and side salad, son got the pizza and I ordered the Alaskan pollock with green beans and mashed potatoes- it also came with a side salad. We all four got either Diet Pepsi or sweet tea with free refills. I say this because anywhere else in the area has been serving cans of Diet Coke or sprite for $3. With no refills. Food was good although to look at it, we didn't have high hopes. We started with the bruschetta that the menu promised fresh mozzarella and all it had was a sparse amount of grated Parmesan and little tiny cubes of not fresh mozzarella. The "toasted" Italian bread was more like a super crunch crouton wafer. Despite all that the taste of the overall dish wasn't bad if your into tomatoes and balsamic. The side salad was an arugula mix with chunky veggies and filling. So we were in the area and needed a place to stay that was pet friendly and this place was advertised as such. Technically that is true if you consider an almost 40% room rate increase friendly. The pet charge is $42.50. I've stayed in Relais & Château that charged less. Let me give you my take on thier guest service philosophy: think about what would be best for the guest or most hospitable and then do the opposite. We were told check in was at four. We drive by it and the parking lot was deserted so we went and hiked down to the Blackwater Falls, an absolutely beautiful spot and then called to see if we could get an early check in I was told that they had three rooms that were dog friendly and all of them were available but they were apparently all still dirty. We asked if they knew when they would be cleaned and they said no that we should call back. I asked if we could get a call when the room was ready and after a lot of sighing and exasperated grunts we were told we would. We walked in at three to see if any of thier cabins were available and we were told the only options held eight. Now we had just driven past all the cabins and it was a ghost town out there. Having said that I now realize that they have a militant check in policy so there's that. We asked if our room was ready just as one of the housekeeping staff walked up and announced that all the rooms were clean and ready. IThey also have various rates for different sides of the lodge, parking lot vs. canyon. You apparently don't get a choice, they just put in in the most expensive side. The room is bigger than a postage stamp but not by much. The view was pretty and I am attaching a photo. One of the added amenities is that you can quite literally hear every word spoken in the hallway or in the room on either side of you. There is mold in the grout in the shower and the carpet has stains everywhere. If I'm up this way again I'll sleep in a leanto before I come back. The Smokehouse restaurant is the only shining spot. We had Joy as a server and she lived up to her name. She made great recommendations and was super personable. Walking by the desk probably 15 times and not once did anyone say hello or look up from their phones or computer. read more

I dinned here for dinner alone, the restaurant was feeding a few people but not busy " a cook and dishwasher hovering around the server station ". The IPA was local, cold and delicious. Caesar salad was a mix of romaine " outer leaves with brown edges" and a few mixed greens, sourced out croutons, sourced out dressing, served on the side, Not tossed and no Parmesan cheese. French onion soup came out with two " barely melted " slabs of provolone cheese. The waitress at my request took it to the kitchen to have put in a broiler or oven and browned until bubbly "I think she was expecting me to send it back ". The waitress returned with the beautifully browned and melted cheese. The cheese turned out to be the best part of the soup, the soup was horrible and I didn't venture any further into the soup. " I did mention that the chef should source out the FOS as well. The 1/2 slab of ribs arrive. The ribs must have been a few days old, connective tissue not removed, no bark or crust, not much smoke for a smokehouse! sauce was sweet, peppery and to my liking. Coleslaw was probably at one time pretty good but by the time it got to me the cabbage was limp and the dressing had lost its flavor. Baked beans were great. My server who's name I unfortunately don't recall was pleasant and quick on her feet. The server removed the $8 soup from the bill without my requesting. I had dinned here about a year ago with my wife. We had the same server, very pleasant. Tattoos. The food had been much better than this visit. I hope it gets better as it is at Black waterfalls, state park one of West Virginia's Crown Jewels. read more

The lodge is currently closed for renovation. They are still using the office for info, small gift shop, and cabin rentals. It's leaf changing time. A bit busy, but worth the visit. Please read the reviews about the lousy service and poor customer service. It's not a very hospitable or welcoming environment. We got reservations for 6 people at 6:00pm. We get there and there was no one to greet us for about 5 minutes. Finally they recognized us and sat us. We sat and we sat some more. Waitresses walking by and no one even acknowledged us. We started to look at the single sided menu that was left on the table and it was 1/3 what was on the main menu at the door. After waiting about 10 minutes we decided to leave. After walking away, a waitress stopped us and said that she was just on her way to see us. A lie. She walked by us numerous times without saying a word before. I then told the front desk that we were leaving and asked for us to stay. I told her why we were leaving and i asked her why the lady folding silverware didn't help. She said that's the manger and that she was too busy to get the tables order. Wow, I see where the apple don't fall too far from the tree. Good stop in Blackwater Falls Park This location is inside the Blackwater Falls park. It is all the way inside the park on the south side of the river along 29/1 road also called, conveniently, Blackwater Lodge Road and Park Forest Road 803. It has a large parking lot out front with room for about 40-60 cars and a charging station. The front of building was under construction when we visited but appears to be built in the grand style of lodges. The restrooms and the small gift shop were both open and accessed around the back of the building. The restrooms were clean and the people at the gift shop were exceptionally helpful on suggestions of how to get the best views of the falls. They suggested at least 3 different places in the park and hikes or driving to get us there. There appears to be a trailhead to the left of the front entrance that says Elakala trail/blackwater falls that the visitor center personnel recommended for us to take if we had the chance. We chose the road tours the staff suggested to see the falls. Overall, a great place to stop for fellow travelers in the park. read more

We had our wedding ceremony at the Blackwater Lodge overlook and the reception on the grass lawn under a tent. The park is pure magic and we couldn't count the number of out-of-town guests who were blown away by the beauty of the park. The lodge was a huge help for us in planning the event, arranging dinner and breakfast, and helping us nail down dates to rent out the entire lodge. The place has an outdated hunting-lodge chic to it that you just have to accept. It's no Ritz-Carlton, but if you understand that about the lodge then you can come to see it has a charm all its own. As kind and helpful as the staff was to us on our big day, and the number of positive reviews we heard in person, I can't in good conscience give the place anything by five stars. Oh, and the Smokehouse has been a huge improvement over previous iterations in the same location. They do great breakfast! read more

Pros- gorgeous views out back, outdoor seating with lovely views, close to Blackwater falls, Ekalaka falls and many other trails. Room was fairly clean though there was a hair on the tv remote, beds were a bit soft, decor is very outdated. No microwave, fridge or dryer. Bathroom is tiny. The food was average at best- the burnt tips were so dry and hard to chew and sat in my stomach the next two days, the bbq pork sandwich was flavorless. The best food were the fries. The pizza was decent. They are way understaffed and service is slow but servers are friendly. Service at the front desk, gift shop and cleaning service- on the poor and unfriendly side. Not one smile, welcome, thank you, good bye etc. Half the price of Canaan Valley and close to many trails and beautiful views. If you're there for the hiking, it's worth it. Don't expect great food or service. There lots of people walking around without masks, not enforced at all. read more

This place absolutely reminded me of the Overlook Hotel from The Shining. We had planned to eat here after driving up from Harman's Cabins (about an hour on a REALLY windy road) but found once we arrived for lunch that they are closed until May sometime. We shopped in the gift shop for a few minutes - used the bathroom - asked the nice older ladies up front for directions - and looked out back at the overlook area and left. The ladies up front did provide us with some directions to Blackwater Falls and provided a local map which was nice. The hotel itself is pretty on the outside and it is in a nice location with a beautiful view from out back. As it was fairly cold the first weekend in April - they had the fireplace going in the main seating area to the left past the restaurant and we sat there to warm up for a few minutes before going on our way. We did not eat here - nor stay here - so I can't comment fully on those things but I could tell from the dated furniture, closed restaurant and just moldy old feel of the place that it's a beautiful old establishment found in a park area. I don't think I'd stay here. If the furniture in the rooms is as worn as what I saw in the lobby - and with the sparse help on-hand I doubt I'd be overly pleased. Plus it's in the middle of nowhere - Davis, WV is about 10 minutes drive down the hill and has a few places to eat but it's pretty isolated. The lodge restaurant is so-so. The portion sizes are generally good for lunch and dinner, but can be small for breakfast. I wish there were more vegetarian- and vegan-friendly options. There was luckily a beyond burger that you could get without cheese, but really nothing else that was vegan, other than salad. The breakfast options also all had meat. The fries were absolutely amazing though. So crisp and savory! The pizza and fettuccine alfredo were also really good. The lodge itself isn't anything fancy, but it does the job. Beds are small but comfy. There was unfortunately no wifi during our 2 night stay, but there was a public connection in the conference room. The staff was generally kind, and one woman even gave us detailed driving instructions to get home in bad weather. They're renovating now, so I think the lodge will only improve. read more

We went there on April 3rd for the breakfast buffet..We arrived around 10:30am-ish..We called first to see what time the buffet ended and was told noon.. So we go in and was seated,waitress told us to go ahead and help ourselves..We go up to the buffet and the pans was all pretty much empty except for the pancakes and French toast pans and by looking at the food in them I could clearly see why they was still quite a bit of pancakes and French toast in them..Alot of the pancakes was pretty much burnt and the French Toast looked awful.. Scrambled eggs- 1 spoonful left in pan which was all dried up.. 3 biscuits in pan which the bottom was hard as a rock..The sausage gravy was awful..Very spicy, pasty and had sausage links cut up in it which in our opinion was nasty.. Bacon pan had 2 pieces of bacon laying in grease that looked raw.. I asked for some fresh crispy bacon and after waiting 20 minutes the waitress brought the bacon to us still extremely fatty no crispness at all to it..I sent it back and asked if the cook could make it crispy..almost 10 minutes goes by we get the bacon and 1 piece was ok to eat the rest was still very fatty.. After taking a bite of each item on our plate we just couldn't eat it..it was truly awful.. They was still and 1.5hrs left of the breakfast bar..They'res no reason the food trays should of been empty and what was there burned and dried up. The cost was $14.95 a person..Not worth $5.00 in my opinion..but to be nice and not cause a scene we went ahead and paid the bill and walked out..We will not go back for the breakfast bar.. Side note- we ate lunch there the week before and it was pretty good..no complaints.. I understand the cost of food is through the roof but serving food like we had on the bar that morning is just plain ridiculous! We were met with an employee/waitress/hostess who was just rude but honestly is probably overwhelmed as most businesses are. Food was adequate but took almost an hour to bring out a salad and some chicken finger platters for kids. No music. Oddly quiet, but fairly crowded. This is the place to go only if there is nothing else open. The food and service are horrible. The hostess stood at the podium and didn't even acknowledge us for a few minutes and then she had to enter several bills into the system before she could take our takeout order. We sat at the bar for drinks and spent a long time before someone acknowledged us. Our drink orders were finally taken but she didn't know how to make them so it was another 10 minutes. We had plenty of time for our drinks, however, because it took more than a half an hour to get a Caesar salad (aka romaine lettuce and a vat of dressing) and mozzarella sticks) and they were only brought to us after we asked if the order had been put in. Others might not mind the menu as much as I did but it's a lot of fried food and a lot of meat and subpar salads. Avoid at all costs. They said we could come back for a free salad but why would we do that? Once Wednesday hits and the better restaurants open, there's definitely no reason to do that. read more

Absolutely love it here and can't wait to go back! Have been twice, in fall and late spring, and stayed in the lodge both times. Go in early October if you can. The fall foliage is truly spectacular and the falls will be flowing heavily. The lodge has a rustic feel with "enough" to do. The fitness center and pool are small but adequate and the game room kept my son entertained after dark. The restaurant has very good food with huge portions at a reasonable price. We're very fond of the breakfast buffet on weekends. The gift shop has a nice selection at very reasonable prices. Staff were outstanding and offered us extra discounts on meals and lodging rates because we had a senior along in our group. The only thing I didn't love about our lodge stay is that the bathrooms in the guest rooms are rather small and steam up quickly but they have an older style heater/fan which will clear the steam if you remember to turn it on. The furnishings are not the newest, but the room furniture appears to be well made out of real wood and really adds to the ambiance and charm of the place. With so much to do, we didn't spend much time in the rooms. They did have flat screen tvs and cable for those of you who can't disconnect. (I had no trouble with cell reception at any point on AT&T network.) There is so much gorgeous scenery to view during the day and the towns of Thomas and Davis nearby offer some neat shops and artisan galleries, as well as some alternative dining options. We spent a few hours shopping along the main drag in Thomas and were quite happy with the treasures we found! The store fronts are charming and the hospitality is second to none. Definitely check out the main falls while you're there. The wooden steps and viewing platform can get slippery when wet so wear appropriate shoes. There are plenty of trails to hike which are easy enough for even beginning hikers. Don't miss Pendleton Point Overlook or Lindy Point as both provide a breathtaking view of the Blackwater Canyon. (Pendleton Point is just a stroll across the parking lot to access. Lindy Point does require a little hiking but is worth the trek!) The overlook from the backside of the lodge is also nice but not quite as impressive as the named overlooks. The Nature Center is not fabulous but there are some trails behind the lake (accessible from Pendleton Point Overlook parking) which provided more photo ops and some welcome shade during our late spring visit. Lodge rates are reasonable and they offer frequent off-season specials. We would go several times per year if not for the five hour drive each way. Can't wait to go back in the fall! read more

The Blackwater Smokehouse Restaurant - pretty disappointing. We ordered beef brisket to go. When we got to our cabin, a five minute drive away, the brisket was room temperature and pretty flavorless. There was not even enough BBQ sauce on it to add any flavor. The corn muffin and cole slaw (very small side) were good. The tiny side of beans tasted a lot like canned Campbell's pork and beans. The club was a large portion and the meat was real, not processed deli counter stuff. The service was efficient and friendly. Pros: Breakfast and dinner were both very good. Excellent food and service. The price of the food is comparable to most restaurants, and the portion size will not disappoint. Our lodge room was clean. Cons: The price of lodging is modern, however the rooms are dated. The lodge was built in the 1950's, and it appears that the last renovation was in the 1970's. read more
