This location used to be The Deerfield Restaurant and Pub. It was bought by a local guy, Matt Haverty, who grew up in the Canaan area; now a BBQ place. Son and I skiing at Timberline walked into the place a bit after 8pm. Only one family was inside eating and a young lady was cleaning and I asked if they were closed. She said getting ready to as they tend to close a little earlier in the winter due to slower business but she said we could order. We considered leaving but happy we stayed. I'm pretty picky on BBQ, but the brisket was amazing as were the smoked wings. They were very crispy. And the potato salad had quartered potatoes with eggs and was fantastic. The pork bbq was also delicious. We ordered at the bar and took a seat. Self serve fountain drinks and tea as well as grab your own utensils. This place did not disappoint. We may come back again while here for the next few days. I want to try the ribs. And the half chicken as that was sold out. read more

This place is a little hidden BBQ spot in West Virginia that I highly recommend. I've been here a few times now and it is amazing food and great prices for what you get. Each side is around $4-8 dollars but they are huge. Especially the fries which could feed about 2 people. I had the Pulled Pork Sandwich with Mac and Cheese and Fries. It was absolutely delicious. We stopped into Canaan Valley BBQ for dinner in the middle of a winter storm that preempted our drive to the restaurant we had originally planned to patronize. Only a few other customers were in the restaurant. The staff was so friendly and helpful, bringing my daughter a sample of the mac and cheese when she could not decide on her side. The portions are HUGE, so we ended up with way more food than we could eat and left with two bags of leftovers, including a giant brownie that the kitchen staff brought out on the house, delighting my children. The dining room was spacious and clean, and the brisket was a crowd pleaser. The fries were crispy and delicious! We would definitely come back if we ever return to the Canaan Valley. read more

We stopped by for dinner last night. We tried the Pulled Pork sandwiches (which had a softball sized mound of meat), 1/2 rack of ribs, and six of their smoked, crispy wings with buffalo sauce and blue cheese and several sides: coleslaw, fries, baked beans, Mac and cheese. the side portions are also huge. We need to take about 1/4-1/2 the meal home. It all tasted very good. As tough as it is to make a go of a restaurant in Canaan/Davis/Thomas (given the wide off season/on season swings), it makes me happy that Canaan BBQ is around. The staff are all friendly, you order at the bar and they bring your food out to your table when it is ready. we also had several bar drinks, their Autumn drink which was rum based, a Beam and Ginger ale and a Gin and Tonic. All were quickly made and made well. The restaurant is rustic but nicely decorated and we enjoyed the atmosphere of watching several young families with kids with wide eyes as their huge portions hit the table. We'll definitely be back. A group of us had ordered large takeout from here for dinner on a Saturday. We ordered pork, chicken wings, brisket, mac and cheese, and French fries. The good: the smoked meats are the star of the show. They were juicy, flavorful, and made a great meal. The meh: the sides were a bit lack luster. Mac and was cheese just ok, the French fries were soft and would not order again, and the "spicy" bbq sauce just tasted like it had lots of pepper in it. We happened to be here on a crazy packed weekend and the restaurant was very busy, so naturally we had to wait longer than anticipated. To be honest the Mac and cheese was not that great, the sauce had a gel texture that wasn't very pleasant. The brisket was delicious as was the chicken. Not a very extensive menu, so not a great place for anyone with dietary restrictions. Portions were large, which was great. Tried a dozen of the smoked chicken wings as well and also perfect. The blue cheese dressing has actual thick blue creek crumbles, which compliments the smoke flavor in the wings. Stopped in while in town on a weekend last month based on reviews here. They have a small menu and were out of nearly everything and it wasn't even dinner time yet. It's walk up with no table service but we were pressured to tip simply for ordering food. There is a large cup out with tips written on it for those paying with cash and for those paying by card, the check out screen defaults to a 20% or 22% tip. As I paid, the girl said, "can you answer this question" pointing at the tip screen then staring as we clicked to pressure us. This is an issue and entitlement of late that is becoming too frequent for me not to call it out. We were disappointed with the food and only ate half it before giving up and throwing it out. The coleslaw was heavily caked in mayonnaise and the meat wasn't good at all. My husband who bbqs pretty well said it was a rookie level error with the wood. The brisket and pulled pork are average at best. Whatever rub they use on the pork is very bland. The wings are nothing special, very little smoke flavor on them. I've had better frozen store bought cornbread. This normally would earn a 3 star review. The one star is due to the HORRIFIC customer service! We picked up a VERY large order for a friends wedding and were expected to supply our own foil pans! We were told the order would be ready at 5:00, evidently there was a miscommunication and they thought it was 5:30, it happens. At 5:30 they started packing the order, at this point we told them to hurry up since we were missing the wedding. Finally at 5:55 it was packed up and loaded. There was a very heated exchange of words including the acting manager telling us " I'm sure it's a very classy wedding" and insulted me by calling me a woman's name, no doubt because I was wearing a full kilt. I can't believe that a manager would disparage both my Celtic heritage and gender in today's world! Standing at the top of the steps waving and saying bye bye. Many people at the gathering are/were food service professionals, myself being an executive chef, couldn't believe the experience. I know choices may be limited in the area but I would recommend finding a establishment that doesn't charge a premium price for average food and that appreciates their customers a little more. First time visit, can't wait to visit again. It was a brisk fall day for a long motorcycle ride so I headed west from Northern Virginia 150 miles to sample this BBQ and ride same great West Virginia roads. The BBQ and roads did not disappoint. Greatly appreciate the COVID measures in place. Tried the pulled pork sandwich, baked beans, and the brownie. Sat down at one of the many outside tables, all a good distance away from each other and dove in. The pulled pork sandwich was massive. Easily the most generous portion I've ever had (which is saying something). Very tasty. A side of BBQ sauce was included which was not to my liking but no worry because the pork was great as it was. Beans were solid. The brownie was massive as well and so moist. Ate half of it and stowed the other half for an afternoon snack (luckily I was riding my Road King with bag so I had a place to put it). Plenty of parking and the dining room looked nice as well though because of COVID was closed. Hard to resist going out there again today ;-) read more
