Retro diner with a fun vibe! The service was EXCELLENT! Fly themed decor everywhere. More seating inside than it looks. We did public parking in back but was free until 11am! Lots of great choices and portions were great. My husband's Huevos Rancheros with chorizo was AMAZING. And my wild mushroom omelette with Gouda, onions and spinach was sooo good. Potatoes okay. I expected more flavor. The sourdough toast had perfect crumb AND their house homemade fruit jam with chai tea was sooo unique and soooo good. Thankful waitress highly recommended we try it. Service was fast and friendly and she even asked if we wanted some coffee to go! And the to go containers were so cute and sealed up well! One small note it was quite chilly. I mentioned and she said the heat works from back to front and we were in window seat which we chose. I would definitely wear more layers going back or sit in bar area back of the restaurant where it was warmer.
Favorite brunch/breakfast spot while I'm visiting friends in Ferndale!! Even though the place was busy last time we came, we were able to be sat quickly. The staff was very friendly and patient with us while we took our time to figure out what we wanted. Love the lighting and the fly decor everywhere haha. My boyfriend ordered the Irish coffee and I got an orange juice. To eat, we got the forager omelet and the El Burrito Bonito. Both were absolutely delicious and super filling. My omelet came with a side of sourdough which was great. I got the rotating jam/jelly that they make in house which I believe was orange. Wasn't my favorite but I still think it's cool to have this as an option for your toast. Overall, definitely recommend this spot if you're in town!!
A must-go-to place for breakfast. The menu items are unique and delicious. Our favorites are the Red Flannel Hash (THE BEST) as well as the huevos rancheros. The staff also is always super friendly and the diner is just a unique place among breakfast/lunch spots in metro Detroit. Also their hot sauces and scratch-made jellies are phenomenal as well.
You can tell this is a local favorite, though it was not my favorite. The vibes inside kind of made me feel like I was in New Orleans. I got the green eggs and ham with the house potatoes and sourdough toast. The ham and potatoes were great, but the texture of the eggs threw off the rest of the meal. I did think it was cool how they always have different flavors for their jam, daily muffin, and entree specials. We got there around 1 pm on a Friday and had to wait about 10-15 minutes for a table for four.
The food was excellent, but the service was disappointing. I had to request lemons multiple times, and our waitress seemed bothered whenever we asked for assistance. Additionally, there's only paid parking available, which costs $1.00, and the restaurant itself is quite small. Not sure if I'll be bk
This is my favorate breakfast restaurant in metro Detroit. I visit again and again. The ambiance, staff and food are fun and relaxing.we've tried many food and most are very delicious. The gingerbread waffle iand Slacker are the winners. Not only food, their homemade salsa is great Every table has different salt and pepper shakers and it is also fun.
One of my most favorite places!!!! I've been going here over 15 years and every time ITS DELICIOUS. Coffee, drink, food all delish. They have a fill bar, staff is always nice. You may have to wait 10-15 minutes sometimes but cool people are always there so it's now awful. The BLAT+C is my go to...and where is has different homemade jams each time you go?!? Nobody, that's who. Which is why this is my forever fave.
We parked in the (not free) lot in the back and entered the restaurant through the back. You can put your name on the waitlist that's hanging on the wall. We didn't have to wait long. It's kind of loud inside and they leave the front and back doors open so it's not that cool inside. We ordered the paddy wagon and forager rumble. Both came with potatoes. The rumble also came with toast of your choice. The food didn't take long. Both meals were tasty. Portions are fair.
The service was excellent!! My hunni got steak and eggs. He asked for medium, with sunny side up.... U tell me what you see in the pick. I asked for a veggie Mexican breakfast dish. We also had crab cakes thingys that were super tasty. The drinks were good! The service was excellent!!
MUST VISIT!! Traveled to Detroit for college football game. I always look up DDD locations Guy has been to. This spot didn't disappoint. We were seated quickly on a mid Saturday morning. Line built up while we were eating. Inside is amazing! Love the unique touches around the location. All the wait staff were nice. Our waitress gave great recommendations. My son ordered the biscuits and gravy special. Note they only serve on weekends. ordered the forager scramble. Both were A plus. Make sure you get the homemade jam for your toast. If you order the mini muffins get more than one. They are light and delicious.
Been wanting to try The Fly Trap for a long time but never get to Ferndale during the day. Until today. We got there around 12:30 and the place was hopping. Had the feeling most were regulars. I ordered the omelet with sour dough toast and my wife ordered the granola/yogurt with a bunch of other ingredients. My omelet was cooked perfectly and potatoes were delicious and piping hot as they should be. Toast often seems to arrive cold at restaurants but not here! Oh, and that house made apple/mango jam was the bomb. My wife is still taking about her lunch and can't wait to go back. Our waitress was super friendly and provided excellent service. Never had to ask for a coffee refill....she was right on it. Everything at surrounding tables looked great. Will try the breakfast burrito next visit. This place is really solid.

Service could have been better. Was sat next to a table of people who were clearly regulars. The difference in treatment was palpable. We had to ask numerous times (and staff) for the check; never received condiments we asked for, and the waitress was generally not very kind. There were missing menu items (waffles) that we weren't told were unavailable until we ordered it. Otherwise, the strawberry lemonade was good (and sweet). The hot Italian omelette was also good. The garlic potatoes were great. We were told the wait would be speedy - it literally was not. Unsure if this applies to the entire place, but the section we sat in was VERY loud. My Apple Watch sent me a "loud volume" alert lol. read more

My sister has come here a few times and really enjoys the food. Parking around here is parallel. You can find some on Woodward or on one of the side streets. It looked like there was a back parking lot but I'm not sure if it was theirs. We came a bit before 10am on a Sunday morning. The wait for a table wouldn't have been long, but we were going to have 8 people in our group. Unfortunately, you can't get seated unless your whole party is there. We waited close to 25 minutes... Kinda sad seeing everyone else get seated who were behind us in line. Old school system though. You write your name on a large paper on the wall towards the back entrance. LOL I hope to see them upgrade to a text service where they message when you're table is ready. Anywho, a lot of my table mates tried the mimosas since they had flavors like blackberry and strawberry. Refreshing! Food-wise, some of my tables mates ordered the huevos rancheros, some got omelets, green eggs and ham, and crab cakes like I did. The crab cakes came with eggs, toast and potatoes. Generous portion sizes! Lots of potatoes and it looked to be close to 3 eggs! I was very full! Not many gluten free options on the menu. Or vegan, sadly. I enjoyed looking at the art work with flies doing numerous activities. Very funny! Good vibes here too. They played a lot of old pop/R&B 90s/2000s music. The staff was nice too! The food was amazing ... however the service not so much. I would get a carry out from this place but I would not sit down to eat again. Our waitress was not too friendly or tentative at all. The greeting from the hostess was dry. It was just not a welcoming atmosphere. I would definable recommend trying take out from here though. The red flannel hash was really good. read more

Absolutely a hidden gem yet clearly out in the open lol. I was visiting for the holidays and staying in pleasant ridge. I remember when this place was just a spiritual store turned restaurant while I was in high school. Checked out the menu and it looked amazing and hip! This place did not disappoint and the staff was wonderful and friendly as well as helpful with our decisions. I had the Huevos Rancheros which were so flavorful and delicious. I'm not typically a black bean type but they were YUM! Son had the gingerbread waffles and loved them, husband had green eggs and ham which he thoroughly enjoyed and the toddler has Mac n cheese. She wasn't a fan but the waitress got her the pbandj. She didn't end up charging for both toddler meals though I would have as it's not the restaurants fault she didn't like it. So I was thankful for that and ripped her for the amount of what it would've cost plus her tip. If your in town give this place a try! 10/10 read more
Went for lunch on a Friday. The parking behind the restaurant was $1.25/hr. I ordered Huevos Rancheros. The volume was big but the taste was nothing to be amazed of. It was not bad either. I would not go out of my way for this dish. Looks like inflation has hit hard. Huevos Rancheros $7.95 in 2018, $9.95 in 2020 and now $11.95. Not sure if portion has changed. But would come back to try other dishes as the server was really nice and the restaurant was cozy. read more

Finally got to try this place out! Went on a Saturday morning and got to sit right down. Food was excellent! They pickle their own veggies (pickled celery in the bloody Mary was exceptionally good) and make their own jams and sauces which I really appreciate. Service was friendly and attentive. Everything was really reasonably priced. We will definitely be going back! read more
Nice and quaint place. Nice day so windows open. Great service and food quickly brought to the table. Wait person really knew the menu and made sincere recommendations. Food was excellent. This was my first time coming here. Was not sure what to order my friend who I came with knew just what she wanted she loves this place. I got help from my neighbors food at the bar and went with what they ordered I got the Red flannel Hash no beet it was good. Ordered me a little Ginger Lemon Mimosas it was very good. This place had a good vibe and great energy. Can't wait to come back!!! read more

We popped in here for lunch on a whim. The whim being we couldn't find parking, it was cold out, this was the closet walk. HOLY CRAP. Walking in, looked like a dive, great news, dives are the best places to eat, and this place is EPIC. It's not a dive, it's a secret. First, food. Okay. I got the dragon noodles, and was warned they were spicy. They are. But also, insanely good. Perfect peanut sauce, perfect cold thick noddles, perfect shrimp. My friend ordered the Mac n cheese with bacon, and we both agreed it's the best we've ever eaten. Ambience? Amazing. Each table has a different matching set of salt and pepper shakers, and it just made my day. I love this place. It's now my life's mission to try absolutely every dish in this menu. read more

Just missed the mark. My husband and I went for lunch on Friday at about 2:30. First time we tried it after new owners took over. We were sat right away where ever we wanted. The entire restaurant was very cold, my husband and I kept our jackets on most of the meal. Ordered crab cakes for the appetizer, I ordered blt+a with a side salad, and my husband ordered the lemongrass faux bowl with tofu. Crab cakes where the star of the show by far. I would go back just for them. My blt+a was dry, I had to get extra aioli on the side and the bacon was under cooked. My husbands faux bowl had a flavor of cinnamon or cardamon. It was very unusual. Probably won't go back. read more
From the original owners to Matt now, I don't think I've ever been disappointed here. The fried potatoes are always delicious. They have specials weekly. BLAT+C, crab cakes and eggs, huevos rancheros, definitely some classics and great! Servers are always nice even if they're busy. read more
Went out for brunch with a few friends - I heard from others that they liked this place for brunch so you know I had to check it out. I absolutely loved this place! We waited about 20 minutes for a table for 3 - not bad for peak brunch hours in Ferndale. When seated, our server was very friendly. The Fly Trap has their own signature hot sauces - our waitress explained each flavor (my fav was the jalapeño cilantro). I thought they each had a distinct flavor and were around the same spice level as Frank's Red Hot. I got the Charmoula Chicken sandwich, which I was pleasantly surprised with. The quality of the chicken and flavor combination was impressive compared to other diners in the Ferndale area. The price was entirely worth it as well. I will definitely come back for good, casual food! My only true complaint was that there were a few flies flying around while we were eating (my friends and I joked it was The Fly Trap manager checking in on us). Overall, a good experience! read more

Absolutely amazing! I typically prefer hash browns over breakfast potatoes... but these potatoes are to die for! Perfectly garlicky and buttery. There are so many good menu options it was hard to choose, but I ended up with the red flannel hash and it was amazing! The portion sizes are great and they are not shy with the ingredients. The fly trap is definitely one of my favorite places to go for breakfast in metro Detroit. Even with a change of ownership the menu is the same wonderful menu and the food is as delicious as always. We ordered the forager omelette and red flannel hash. The portions are ample and we always leave with leftovers. We also enjoyed our bloody Mary's and the coffee. Make sure you try their jam and hot sauces that are all made in the house and are spectacular. read more
Went to fly trap for breakfast and like that we were able to get seated very quickly which is sometimes difficult on weekend mornings. Sat at the bar and like how much bigger it is ( haven't been there in years). The omelettes egg's we're a great mixture of fluffy but also crispy on the outside. Liked the vibe and atmosphere and will be back soon! read more

This was my first visit to the Fly Trap and I left happy and full. Portion sizes are huge and the dishes are soo tasty. My Forager meal was cheesy, buttery, and full of mushrooms. The potatoes are the perfect kind - crunchy and garlicky. They also serve up 3 unique hot sauces to eat with your meal and I was bouncing back and forth and could never decide on my favorite. The best surprise and the real star of the show was their homemade toast - normally when breakfast comes with toast I skip it but the jame had me reaching for my very last slice! This place is very impressive! The interior gives diner vibes but a cool twist. My chicken sandwich blew my mind. It came with a spiced chicken thigh, cheese, caramelized onion and a lemon aioli that popped off. The bread was warm and toasted and great for a cold day. The chop chop salad and fries were also very tasty. I recommend coming here during the week as it can be tough to get it on the weekends! read more

The service was great and super quick to make my order on a weekday morning. They have multiple options that can be ordered as vegan. I got the huevos rancheros which was pretty good. The tortilla chips seemed fresh which made it better. I would go back to explore vegan options on their menu. read more

Great DDD breakfast joint in the heart of Ferndale. Ordered the Red Flannel hash and eggs. Corned beef hash was really good with a mix of house made corned beef w/ potatoes and beets. Topped with house-made Thai chili sauce. The spicy mango jam for my toast was outstanding. Bought a bottle of each to take home with me. The hip decor really sent this pace over the top. Very enjoyable breakfast. Look forward to coming back!!! Two thumbs up! read more

Is the restaurant handicap accessible?
If I remember correctly they would have some handicap accessible tables in the front room. I don't think the bathroom is the overall restaurant is extremely small but there is an "entrance" in the front that you're not supposed to use that I'm 99%…
Is this place permanently closed?
No! They reopened with a new owner, but the same menu.
What is the health score for fly trap?
I didn't know that Ferndale had health scores. I've eaten there a million times with no problem. Just go! You won't regret it
