Ask lotsa questions about your guide before booking. I'm sure the shop has great ones, but also at least one extremely lazy one. Caution.

Awesome customer service. When they were pulling my items to be packed and shipped, they realized they were out of a certain item I had ordered. They called me and replaced it with something of higher quality without hesitation. I was super impressed by their willingness to make sure the customer was happy. As a new-by to fly fishing, it really made my experience better. I've ordered flies from them twice now and I'm absolutely going to continue to do so. Thank you!! read more

Awesome operation and amazing guides. I've taken both my kids on Lower Sac floats and we've had an amazing time!

I made an online order and they called and said they are out of the rod i ordered and gave me an upgrade free of charge. this shows that the truly care about giving the best product to their customers. this is my favorite fly fishing shop and will forever be my favorite. read more

A remarkable experience. Selected a couple of flies (was never rendered assistance), and confronted by a condescending clerk with a hint of snobbery. If you could see the thought bubble over his head it said, "Leave and don't come back." Was not outright rudeness but subtle; standoffishness, obvious vagueness when asked about certain waters, pretentious and ill mannered. Lastly, I (a veteran) was going fishing with an active duty friend who needed to renew his license. They refused to do it. My favorite fly shops are fish first in east bay and ted fay's -- great service and good people. Flyfishing since 1987. read more

I and my fishing buddies have been coming to The Fly Shop for many years. We have fished their private waters as well as used their guide service. Our last trip was with guides floating the Trinity River and it was not a good experience. We stayed at Indian Creek Lodge with many other fishermen and they and their guides all headed downriver because the lack of rain prevented large numbers of Steelhead from getting up River. The owners of Indian Creek Lodge told us that lots of fish were being caught downriver. Our two guides explained that it would be really crowded downriver and so they took us upriver. They were right, it was not crowded upriver. We were the only ones fishing the section they chose and it was a nice float with no fish. We were at a loss to understand why they took us only a few miles upriver from the lodge when everyone else went downriver. We surmised that maybe they wanted to save on gas since they would be paid where ever they took us. I called Nick at the Fly Shop and told him we were not happy with our experience. His reply was that he was sorry we did not catch fish. He also stated that fishing for steelhead is not a numbers game and you are lucky to catch a fish. Finally he said that their guides did their best. All of this was a fine explanation, but it really did not address why we fished upriver so near the lodge, when everyone else fished downriver. We paid for guides and the expectation is always that the guides will try to put you over the fish. With these guides, for whatever reason, we did not feel that they tried to put us over fish. The Fly Shop simply came up short and our only conclusion is that we chose poorly. Sent from my iPad read more

For any of you who are planning on booking a fly fishing trip with this fly shop, please beware of a location that they have not critiqued or have personally reviewed. Such a location as Oasis Spring Lodge is a perfect example. Myself and 7 other anglers booked this lodge for a week. All I can say is what a disappointment. This location, although marketed by the fly fishing shop as a marvelous experience, was such a letdown. The lodge itself is old and rundown. The smoke alarms are all disconnected. There was no personnel on staff during our stay. The trashcans, as you can imagine, started to overflow. There was nowhere to deposit your kitchen trash. As far as the fishing goes, it is so overrated and bloated out of proportion, don't even waste your time. The rainbows are 12 inches for a big one, and far, few, and in between, even if you hike two miles in full fly fishing gear on a treacherous mountain goat trail that is not fit for humans, and not maintained. And the road in and out is worse than the Baja 500. Shame on you, fly fishing shop. read more

This place is really hopping. I went on a guided tour a couple of weeks ago and it was great. Catching some fish is what I came out to do and did, thanks! read more

I always go to the local fly shops to get info and pick up some flys. The shutdown for covid19 is going on so they're getting orders ready over the phone and bringing them out to your car. They talked to me on the phone and gave me lots of good information. Very helpful read more

I purchased a fly rod online from these folks as it was a discontinued model that had a nice discount. When the rod showed up it was the wrong model, not the one I was looking for. I contacted them and they sincerely apologized, said they'd get it fixed ASAP. As it turned out in the few days it took to get the rod and call them back, they sold out of the model I was looking for. Could have been one of those "sorry, too bad" situations but these folks really stepped up. They offered several solutions, but the one I chose was an upgrade to the currently offered rod that replaced the discontinued model I had purchased for the same discounted price. I'd say that's going above and beyond... Great to know outstanding customer service isn't a thing of the past. The kind of place I like to do business with! read more

My son and I went fishing for two days with Bryan, one of the guide staff. We had a great time and caught lots of fish. My son had not fly fished before, and Bryan did a great job instructing him and introducing him to the sport. read more

Can't say enough good things about the Fly Shop. We have used guides from the Fly Shop on the Trinity and Sacramento rivers. Our favorite guide is Popeye and we are looking forward to an upcoming outing with him on the Trinity. It has also been a pleasure working with Kara. She is very sweet and helpful. read more

The Fly Shop is Redding is probably one of the best flyfishing shops in the country. I've been to the best in Montana, California, etc... and this one rates right up there with all of them. They've got all the equipment and services plus they are knowledgeable yet unpretenscious about the area and the sport. Great online store as well. read more

My cousin and I have been talking about a guided trip for quite some time. This time when we got our catologe from The Fly Shop, we got on the phone with each other and said this is it! We booked a trip on the lower Sacramento on April 12 2014. They paired us up with Ernie Dennison for a guide, and he fit us to a "T". We hooked big fish, lots of fish, beautiful fish..........and will be back for more soon! read more

I have been fly fishing for many years. I have been to many shop over the years. This one has a very nice selection of everything. However I felt the prices were high compared to many shops that I have been in. And they were very pushy. Wanted me to buy things that they had that was the more expensive. When I told them I knew what I came for and been fly fishing for year. They did not want anything to do with me. I chose to walk out and go some where else. They like inexperience fishermen. They can influence them better and sell them more stuff. read more

The best fly shop I have ever visited. Great selection in the store and on line. I am not all that experienced even though I have been fly fishing for years. The staff at the Fly Shop very patiently helped me with great tips on the area, what flies to use and lots of other information. Prices were very reasonable and I will never go back to Orvis again. I am going to sign up for some of their guided trips so I can work with the pros. I find fly fishing very relaxing but I'd like to actually start catching some fish. Good store and I recommend it highly. Steve Q. read more

I had my first fly fishing trip experience with my buddy's recommendation to experience with the Fly shop. We had Russell as our guide! I have been fishing for 20+ years and never attempted fly fishing because I thought it was "too hard".... We got on the water right at 8:30am as promised! Spent 30-35 minutes on training and teaching me the basics. All throughout the first 2-3 hours was my learning curve time. By noon I landed my first rainbow, fly fishing!! Close to 14 inches. An hour or two later landed my second, around 12 inches but much thicker!! Close to the end of the day I hooked up with a monster but could not get him in. Throughout the half day trip my buddy booked for us, Russell was the magic behind us having an AMAZING TIME! His patience, experience, grace, positivity and motivation kept us excited to keep our line in the water and start to develop our skill sets (on a day we were told the fish were not biting well!). Russell, you made my summer. I already have my dad and another close buddy ready to book a trip together. We will see you in 3 weeks. Thank you! read more

Was in the shop today. And even though I am a pretty experienced fly fisherman, I wasnt rigged right for the coming days on the lower sac and trinity. Guess I didnt get the memo informing me that fishing for trout on the East Walker isnt the same as fishing for steelhead on the lower sac. ;-) To Justin and Eric's credit, I didn't get the youre-an-idiot-fly-shop-guy attituede, even though I was going to nymph it vs swing it. Justin was patient as I asked questions and he taught me some great new tricks. First day on the lower Sac was good. Upper Sac tomorrow (conditions permitting). Trinity on Saturday. Thanks guys. read more

This is an extremely well run, professional shop and business. I have purchased supplies, equipment, and several guided fishing trips from this shop, and have always received great value and top notch service. The staff is knowledgeable, helpful, and courteous. They freely supply advice that is accurate, and they are not condescending to us 'amateurs' My, 'over the top' moment came last week, when my clumsiness caused me to break my fly rod, that my wife had purchase from TFS. I took it in to find out the cost to replace the broken part (reel seat). Instead, they GAVE me a replacement at no charge. I'd recommend this shop to anyone interested in fly fishing. They are the go-to spot on the internet, too, for shopping and their stream report. http://www.theflyshop.com/streamreport.html. read more

Beautiful shop with insightful and intuitive employees. This shop is a must when fishing in the Redding area.

Let me say the customer service was good. They were helpful and had a good selection of flies and gear. Probably the best I've seen in Nor Cal. I bought a new Nautilus reel for around $700 plus another $100 in Simms gear. At the register the associate said I should try a rubble legs so I said yes. He then grabs the flies and charges me for them. Sure they are running a business but I just spent $800 and he charges me for the flies he suggests. I've been fishing for years and any other shop in Oregon or MT would have given those to me. It really rubbed me the wrong way. I just bought my 8 weight Nautilus reel from Rivers Edge and they gave me half off my line. That's how you take care of a customer. Being my first time on the river I asked for somewhere I could go away from the crowds so they walked over to the fly stand and handed me a photo copy. Keep in mind this probably has been photo copied about 10 million times, not an isolated place to fish. Take a trip back 6 months back I also contacted them regarding a guided trip and did not hear back for over a week. Followed up again and basically said they were so busy they didn't have time to get back to me. Just feels very pretentious. I will only go back for flies if I have to, all my gear will be bought from Rivers Edge who appreciates my business. read more

We came in just before closing time on a Saturday to get geared up for a trip we had booked on the McCloud. The staff was very helpful, knowledgable and courteous. They stayed late with no complaints. Our guided trip with Brian was everything that I had dreamed of. Brian was very helpful. He spent some time instructing me on a couple of casting techniques that I did know. My wife is a novice so Brian spent most of the day instructing her and put her on some beautiful fish. Having never fished the McCloud before I am happy that we chose to book a guide. We had booked a drift on the Lower Sac. but I had to return home so my father took my place. My dad is 92 and had never fly fished before. Brian had him catching fish really quick considering his lack of experience. My wife and father had another excellent trip and Dad caught some beautiful fish. I highly recommend The Fly Shop's guide service and we will definitely book with them again. read more

I stopped in here with my dad on our way back from a fly fishing trip in Oregon and I was looking to purchase a new fly rod because mine broke while I was on my trip. When I walked into the fly shop I couldn't believe how big there selection of flies were. I asked one of the staff about there shop rods and he explained the differences between them and he let me cast both of them in the parking lot. He didn't pressure me in buying one he was very helpful and understanding that I had a low budget. I eventually bought the h20 signature rod and it has been on 2 trips to the sierras already and I have caught several trout on it. I will definetley go back to The Fly Shop when I'm in the area again ! read more

The Fly Shop is absolutely the best. The staff is truly knowledgeable and (though I hate to post this because availability is limited and the grandchildren want to go again next year) the Family and Kids Fly Camps are top notch. The staff that Kara has assembled is the best in their field and amazing with children. As an example, we (granddaughter and I) returned from Family Camp last week. There was a boy there from the Silicon valley who wanted to go home the first night...he missed his xbox (no joke). By the end of the week he was talking about becoming a counselor. The counselors/guides are passionate about teaching children. Another parent and I said the kids went to school for a week, they just didn't realize it. The sessions on entomology are stellar and Ben, Zack, and the others are well educated in their fields and passionate about fishing/bugs (after meeting them finally understand my grandson's passion). This week our grandson and husband were to go to camp, however, the fires precluded that...so the Fly Shop arranged a guided Sacramento River trip. Matt, their guide, was incredible and patient. Taught our grandson about casting/fishing, then took him fishing. Both caught "big ones." My hairdresser has traveled throughout the world with the Fly Shop and every time I visited him (he has now retired) he simply gushed with how great the trips were...don't hesitate, go. read more

My friend and I scheduled a fly fishing class with the Fly Shop several months ago. Last weekend I met him in Redding and we drove to the Fly Shop to do some pre-class 'research'. We're both fairly experienced fisherman but neither of us has had much exposure to Fly Fishing. The Fly Shop seems to have everything you'd need and the staff was very helpful explaining some of the types of equipment we might want to consider if we wanted to delve deeper into this aspect of fishing. No pressure, but man do they have a lot of stuff. I could go so crazy in this place. The class was nothing short of awesome. We stayed at the Indian Creek Lodge (about 45 minutes away) and could not have been happier with the total experience. We had a small class (4 people) with an instructor and 2 guides. Talk about total immersion. We learned so much and had lots of fun - it was truly a wonderful experience. We learned the basics and a lot more. Nick is amazing, personable and wise beyond his years. Brian and Popeye provided interesting and highly effective variations on technique and I'd definitely hire either of them as guides to go just about anywhere. BTW - EVERYONE caught a lot of fish. What a great way to spend a 3 day weekend. read more

I ordered a special rod for my son who is visiting SC from CA for Christmas. I found out the rod was "Awaiting Fulfillment" from The Fly Shop Friday, December 23rd, OUCH! I called and emailed never expecting to actually get anyone or any good response, but I was really surprised! Christina, from The Fly Shop, called me, found a rod and is having it overnighted to my house so I will have it for Christmas! I am writing this review to let you know that Christina, listened, and really cared to solve the problem. She was absolutely the most helpful customer service person I have had the opportunity to deal with. Quick to respond, and decisive action that resolved the problem. I don't know anything about the rod or company really, but will always do business with The Fly Shop, because of their customer service! Thank you again Christina. read more

i tried to buy some tackle from them online, but their website balked. so i called them and spoke to gentleman who quite literally had to go to one of their shop computers and google his own shop just in order to get the order going. after nearly 15 minutes of fumbling around he managed to get my order (2 items for about $350) straight and then took my information, which required another 10 minutes or so. finally we hung up. another 15 minutes went by. the man from the fly shop called to say that the items weren't in stock. needless to say, i shall shop elsewhere. read more
