That being said let me give kudos where kudos are due...... 5--Star Service ***** I went to Big 5 to look at - and hopefully find - a pair of shoes to replace my very worn Coleman hiking sneakers. There was a clearance sale out in the parking lot, so I spent my first 15-20 minutes trying to find something in my size and try them on. Unfortunately nothing there fit the bill. So I went in... I was greeted by a kind young lady in the footwear department and spent the next hour sending her into the back many times trying to find just the right pair. She (Amanda) was very knowledgeable and friendly. During all this time she engaged most of her customers in small talk while helping them. I felt quite at ease and not rushed. Not once did Amanda show signs of stress, but instead, was patient yet prompt with each customer - even when there were lots of us there at one time. Her knowledge of footwear was shared with me and helped to pinpoint what styles of shoes I should be looking at. With her direction and patience I finally singled-out a pair of New Balance cross trainers (622's) which were surprisingly light as well as supportive. Their comfort was far beyond that of the Asics and the Nike's (which were the lightest of the bunch but did not fit my foot well at all - bummer), and the Dr. Scholl's which were heavy yet gave no upper support. The majority of what I tried on were either too thin or too small though they were stamped in my size. The service there can't be beat. And I'm sure if they don't have what you're looking for, they are more than able to direct you to a store (either locally or regionally) that can assist you. I would like to add that John was very helpful as well. He made it a point to come over and see if I needed any assistance, and he did it with patience and a smile. Do they have THAT in the Bay Area? I was shocked to be told that there is no customer restroom and that I could take my 4-year-old grandson to the gas station down the road. Seriously? He is FOUR YEARS OLD. At that point, I was so upset that I left the store without purchasing a single thing. I will never shop here again. You just lost a customer, and from now on, I'll be taking my business to Dick's instead. I understand that businesses have policies, but refusing a bathroom to a small child and simply telling a paying customer to take him to a gas station is completely unacceptable. The way this was handled was extremely disappointing and left me angry enough to walk out without buying anything.
