I've been going to Jones Fort for well over a decade, and I've always found them friendly and helpful. Patrick is THE man to talk about about shotguns, Marshall Jr is THE man to talk to about reloading, and the others behind the counter have always been knowledgeable about anything I've asked. I have bought firearms from Jones Fort and have also used them as an FFL. In both capacities they are good people to work with. Some shops try to discourage internet purchasing by setting their FFL fees way high (like $100). Jones Fort, last time I did a transfer, was $35 (EDIT: Not anymore, it's $100). Ammo prices are definitely reasonable in comparison to other shops around town. You might find a firearms cheaper elsewhere, but after dealing with the VERY misinformed people at Nice Shot and the lack of professionalism at Great Outdoors (EDIT: closed now), I'll be doing any future purchasing at Jones Fort. If the price is a little higher, I'll consider it worth it so that I can deal with professionals. EDIT: Well, unfortunately Jones Fort now charges $100 for transfers, and for the love of me I don't know why (save my theory that they wish to discourage internet purchasing). If the gun is used, though, and not likely to be found locally, why punish your customers? Does it really cost $100 for the labor and time to do transfers? If so, then I'll gladly pay, but the price seems inflated since I was able to do transfers through an FFL in Sacramento for a third the cost. Grinds my gears; not enough to not do it, but there's goes the fifth star. read more

This gun dealer is the dumbist bunch of assholes ever! Had a relative send me a rifle to Idaho.. They charged him For shipping and took ZERO information from him! How the heck would my FFL dealer know who to contact once delivered?? My FFL dealer contacted them an straightened it all out.. They were very rude and barely forthcoming. They shipped this rifle USPS! Who does this?? Bunch of misinformed, rude, Ignorant dumb asses! Note to all.. NEVER USE THIS BUSINESS!!! read more

No longer shall I use Jones Fort for anything all due to one employee. Employees are a reflection of the owner in my way of thinking. Used Jones Fort to ship a firearm to another state. Was the first one in when the doors opened on a Thursday morning. Some information was exchanged albeit, very little and I paid the amount they quoted. Was told the firearm would go ether that day or the next day, Friday. A few days goes buy and never hearing back from the receiver went to the gun shop to get some details. Found the shipping label was not made out till FIVE days later. The older man who handles the shipping, when pressed for details like, when was it shipped? By which carrier? (They used the least trusted one, USPS) When I pressed this gentleman for details, he got real short with me saying they don't make money doing this kind of thing, they just do it as a favor. Cost was a even $100. Yes, they made some money. Learned from the FFL dealer whom the firearm was shipped too said he never heard from Jones Fort and that he had to reach out to them to get any information. Have bought firearms here and for the most part, the men behind the counter were very friendly. But the man who handles the shipping is the bad apple. A rude employee will destroy a business and he destroyed any chance of me doing any future business with this shop. read more

I recently purchased a firearm and did the private party transfer through Jones' Fort. I live seven hours away so this purchased required two trips up north to the store as well as multiple calls with questions that I had. Each phone was answered by friendly staff. They were patient and answered any questions that I had. In store I got to deal with both Jaime and Jacob. Both of these guys were very friendly, helpful, and professional! Had great conversations both times in was in the shop. I didn't experience anything like previous negative reviews indicated. I think they may have gotten a bad rap! All in all a great place for all your firearm needs! read more

I should have read the reviews before walking into this place. I walked in and immediately was asked to show ID. Didn't think much of it since I thought this was the store policy or something. I was greeted by a younger gentleman, he was very helpful and seemed eager to answer my questions about a firearm while the older man was very condescending and nudging him to stop talking to me. I felt like I was not welcome in their store. Every question I asked the older man was answered with an excuse on why they couldn't help me. None of the other customers that walked in while I was there were asked to show ID. Then after reading all the other reviews I realized it wasn't because they couldn't, but because they didn't want to help me. Also their prices are way to high. Redding guns, the gun cave, Bastiani arms and sportsman's have always been very friendly and helpful. I'll be going to them for any future purchases. read more

I took several firearms too Fort Jones Sat. 6-28-25. Patrick's services and knowledge on Ca. regulations were exceptional ! Patrick and his employee Jamie bore sighted new scopes on 3 long guns , new nite glow sites on my 1911 & cleaned my hand guns Great Job Guys, Sincerely Frank read more

encountered passive aggressive employees two separate times. Bought my first handgun from here years back. That being said, they seem knowledgeable and threw a screw in the trigger guard of my deer rifle for free when it backed out. Overall, probably would not recommend. read more

Over the last 25 years, I have purchased over 5k in guns, ammo, and supplies from Jones Fort. Prices were never the best, but they usually had what I needed for an exact need. Even though I would describe myself as a good customer... the pleasant but busy guy who buys with no tire kicking...the owners...especially Patrick... would rudely make me wait and wait while they pontificated with all sorts of people about the government, local politics, or some sort of imagined danger and how to defend against it. (Obviously, they had spent their entire lives behind the counter of their little store and never actually used a weapon in real life and death situations.) As a gainfully employed customer, I couldn't wait all day, so more and more I made purchases elsewhere. Patrick's shinning me on about pre-paid parts that didn't arrive for many months was irritating but lies about having not sold a competition H&K I had on consignment was the final straw. After a couple of months of lies on the phone, I found the gun HAD been sold! After waiting and waiting, and him avoiding me when I came in he claimed " You can't expect me to have that kind of money to pay you now!!! What?? Someone had paid him weeks ago...but he can't pay me?? The help is rude. Service is slow. To top it off last week, he openly backed up a local white supremacist who called a local black veteran the N..... word.... publicly...and then kicked the veteran out! The day after Veterans Day!!!! (it's on video). Stick with me with a fork...I am done. There are lots of better gun shops in town now. I will never step foot in Jones Fort again. read more

I was just looking for a .357 Magnum revolver, not to have to listen to Patrick's extremist political views to another customer in the store. read more

Bought a firearm from the Jones' Fort last year. The staff was very professional and informative. The paperwork went smooth and I would recommend this shop to everyone. read more

Customer service is fantastic. Each time I go in this store they have dozens of guns I am interested in checking out. The staff at J. Fort always is kind and helpful. I have often needed small parts and they typically have them in stock. It also helps that I live so close to this store. Support local business, support USA, support Jones Fort. read more

I took my son in and did some training with Mr Jones. SUPER helpful. EXCELLENT with education. SAFE in modeling behavior and instructing my son. And genuine and authentic care for customers. Thank you! read more

Have visited several time and have found the staff rude and unwilling to answer questions. Stoped in to purchase my first firearm ( had loads of questions being a novice).....I left and went to a much more friendly shop & purchased a pistol. Nice looking shop. Doesn't seem friendly to newbies. Never had anybody talk to me in the 15' that i was there. Not even a head nod... read more

Jones' Fort - Guns & Ammo Near Me - Redding, California

See all

These guys & gals are something else. It's a family owned business and I was in Az, dealing with a Cali issue on my weapons. It was suggested I call Jones Fort. This gal gave me all the info I needed to transfer ownership properly in California. I followed her instructions and all was done in no time. Thanks again for the info!!! read more

This is the place I go to for guns or shells . They have always treated Me right here . I wish I could give them more then 5 Stars

This group of fine people were always able to answer my questions whenever I phoned in for guidance on California's arcane gun laws. Once, they sold me a used .22 rifle that had something wrong with it, and when I pointed that defect out a few weeks later, they cheerfully ordered me a new .22 rifle (a Chipmunk, one of my favourites) at basically no cost to me. On the few occasions I have used their gunsmithing services, they have been extremely quick with the turnaround time. I have visited all the other gun stores in Redding and Chico, but this is the one I turn to when I need solid advice and a good price. read more

Thank you Jones Fort, I have shopped at Jones Fort for most of my shooting related items for years, the ownership and employees have always been very knowledgeable and courteous. Marshall and his staff do a fantastic job answering all your questions and giving you the right information to make you a responsible gun owner. Thank you again Jones Fort. read more

I have purchased many weapons from Jones Fort and have found them to be the most knowledgeable people in town. I have been to other shops and treated rudely, ignored, and yet received the answers I needed. Purchasing weapons is serious business and I believe these guys take it serious, maybe too serious for some. In addition I have been through 3 concealed classes with them and yes I only needed one but found them helpful enough to attend 3. read more

The staff at Jones' Fort are rude and condescending. I like to shop local businesses but I will never walk through their door again. They treated me like I was from another planet. It's funny how local businesses complain about big box stores coming in and taking most of their business, and then they treat potentially new customers with contempt. Sad.... read more

Without question the worst service ever. The man at the counter was rude and condescending. I had heard this before. Never again will I set foot in their store read more

I usually do not take the time to write reviews, but I think I will take some time for this one. My dad bought me a rifle from these guys for Christmas and I went in the following day to get help with a few questions I had. Not only did I not feel welcome in there at all, it was difficult to get help even when there were guys standing around behind the counter. The answers they gave me were knowledgeable but were short and to the point without any feeling of wanting to be of help, just that I was a nuisance. My gun may be from there, but it doesn't mean I need to go back. read more

Took Marlin lever gun in for a screw replacement on Friday. Was told by Patrick it could get done on Monday. I called back late Monday, was told middle of the week. I went in late Wednesday. Was told by Patrick they didn't have the screw and would have to order it. The following Monday, I still had not heard from them. I called and and was told by Marshall that he couldn't get the screw so I went in to retrieve my gun that they could not repair in 10 days. Upon picking it up, I found that they had bent the front sight and dinged the pivot screw on the lever. What chuckle-heads! Took gun to Bastiani Arms. See that review. This, plus the fact that their prices are way higher for everything than the other gun shops in town, I will not do business with Jones Fort anymore. read more

Patrick and Marshall do an excellent job proving knowledgable service and quality gunsmithing.

We came here today bc my boyfriend wanted to check out some .357 revolvers, and this store was the only one in town that had all 3 he wanted to look at. The staff member who helped us took his time to help my bf understand the pros, cons of each model, without ever trying to influence or pressure us. Very gracious and helpful, would definitely shop here again. read more

These guys are great! I particularly appreciate that they offer Hunter's Safety classes.

One of the largest selection of rifles and shotguns in town. Staff knows their stuff and can usually get most anything you want if it is available. parking could be better but overall it is a good place to find the right gun for you. read more

I've stopped at this place now for the final time. I've been here 3 times now to make a purchase, but didn't even receive acknowledgement from anyone Behring the gun counter. After waiting about 30 minutes to look at and probably purchase a shotgun, I assumed that I would be the next customer... Wrong. You know what they say about assume - it makes an ass out of you and me. Should have made the obvious decision after the 2nd stop here. Bastiani Arms is the polar opposite of this place. Acknowledgement that they will be with you soon, if they're busy, will order your gun if they don't have it and are glad to see you again, even if it's been awhile. read more

The guys in there aren't very familiar with the laws, they gave me wrong information.

Marshall Jones, Sr. gave me my first gun safety training 25 years ago when I was 10, with the rest of my family. Since then, I have relied on Jones Fort for sage advice, firearm knowledge, and purchase of said firearms. Jones, Jr. and Patrick run the show now and they have always been friendly and generous with their time and wisdom. Marshall is a very kind, gentle guy overflowing with firearms knowledge. He has built his own (very) large caliber rifles from buttstock to crown, reloaded custom brass, and is always willing to impart wisdom to someone interested enough to ask. Please do ask; you won't be disappointed. Patrick is a shotgunner and has always been excited to answer my questions or talk different makes and models and their merits. John is an aficionado of 1911's and the .45 round in particular and is free with his advice. He has an opinion, is willing to share it, and is a fascinating character. He truly loves firearms and wants you to enjoy them too. This is a good shop with good honest people working there. I don't live in town but my last two firearms were bought at Jones Fort. There's a heck of a good chance my next will be too. Please give your local gun shop your patronage! read more

I have bought guns at almost every dealer in town since 2007. I have found Marshal and John both very easy to work with. Their younger employees are also very friendly and quick to help. I like older guns and they seem to get a steady supply that keeps me coming back. I will say that I was disappointed in their gun smithing service and now use another Gun smith. Over all for selection and advice they are my go to store. read more

The owner of this place is an absolute ass. They are over priced anyway. If you are looking for guns in Redding try Olde West or Nice Shot. Both have good prices and knowledgeable, friendly staff. read more

Jones fort is a redding landmark and a respectable business. I do not think anyone in this store would be dishonest in any of their business dealings. This being said, I have found the staff to be distant, difficult to communicate with, and many times rude. I came into the store to purchase a J-frame revolver to carry as an ankle gun, the clerk told me I needed a .45 caliber 1911 and should forget the ankle gun. I explained that I had several options for a main carry including a 1911, but he still kept pushing the gun. Another time I brought my wife into the store to look at handguns. We asked for a gun with an easy slide to pull as my wife has difficulty with this. The clerk handed her a sig with a stiff slide and just kept telling her not to be afraid of the gun. Over all, not helpful. I think the store has limited stock, and the staff just pushes whatever is in the cases. read more

Very rude I don't know if the gunsmith just got out of school but the work is not clean. The prices are not the highest in town but old west and bastiani arms are lower I won't be going back it's a old store that has never been updated over the years and smells like it read more

I don't know about the experience of these posters and I will admit that I haven't been there for awhile, but in the past these guys have been very helpful. Maybe what is happening is that the reviewers are not being pressed on buying guns. Nothing wrong with being undersold. I have been to other gun shops in Redding where I was pressed to buy something I wasn't really interested in. My suggestion is to inform yourself a bit more before going into a shop so you at least have an idea of what you are interested in. Sorry if I have offended anyone who feels different or have just missed your POV. You may be a more informed customer than I realize or maybe you are just shopping. Could be wrong of course. read more

Good shop to buy guns. Knowledgable about current market conditions and will look for a gun for you. Marshall is very helpful. Smaller shop so selection of accessories is limited but they have many typically used on popular guns. I will go back to shop there. read more

I would NOT Recommend Jones Fort I . I took a (1891-1892) Winchester lever action in to have it Safety checked and cleaned. According to the manager they spent 4hrs cleaning it and test firing it. When I checked it it did not look like it had ever been cleaned and was told it was because the barrel was pitted and I would never get it clean. I wish I could post a photo to show what I got out of the barrel. What I got was not just a small amount of black residue or rust. I now need to find a new gunsmith and have it redone because I am not even sure they test fired it. I will never buy anything from them ever. read more

always found them friendly and helpful. never try and hurry even when they are very busy. gunsmiths always do an excellent job.

I have been in Jone's Fort twice looking at air rifles. Not knowing much about them, I was hoping that someone could answer a few questions. A young man behind the counter acted as if I were a nuisance and was very unhelpful and rude and arrogant. I went back in about a year later, hoping for better results, but I ended up dealing with the same kid again as every one else was either on the phone or talking to other customers. Same routine, he showed me one rifle and when I asked questions about it he just stared at the window looking put out. When I asked him if he had any other models, he said that he could order something, but then said that this was a gun shop, insinuating that if I wanted a toy, I should go elsewhere. I am actually in the market for another "real gun', but I would never buy from them. I prefer to buy from businesses that are local and It is very rare that I leave a business feeling frustrated and angry But this has been my experience twice. read more
