Upon pulling up to this spot I was quite skeptical. I disregarded my skepticism and came in. To my surprise it's a very quaint and personal. I noticed a live DJ and seating in addition to the bar. I sit at the bar and the waitress greets me. She took my order, but honestly didn't come back after that. Luckily for me, another waitress arrived and was a bit more attentive. I originally ordered a patron margarita with grand marnier and that came out to $14...geeesh. They have selected speciality cocktails that are approx half the price of my drink. I also had the Frozen mojito, which is a specialty cocktail, and it was mediocre. I order the goat pizza, which was deelish. I absolutely love prosciutto, but I'm trying to back away from pork lol. None the less the pizza was very tasty. Also note that they ONLY serve pizza, different varieties, but only pizza! There's a DJ and the music was nice. No rap/hip-hop this particular night, nonetheless nice music. Perfect spot to come alone, which I did, or for the average creeper. This place is so tucked away I almost passed it up. Three stars for the lack of diverse menu and not so attentive waitress. This is a perfect spot if you've experienced a bad day and just need to ease your mind. Discovered this place on Yelp and showed up with 20 people for my husband's birthday at 9 pm. Not that crowded then. Found several chairs to lounge in. Grabbed some pizzas (superb!!!) and wine to begin the night. The DJ was playing some great techno music and the atmosphere was quite hipster! Absolutely fun! Started getting crazy busy after 11 but never stopped being fun! Went back the next day to retrieve a lost item and was helped promptly. I first went to the Flat on Commonwealth about a year ago when I went to visit a friend, and we hung out at his place on Haddon. After finishing the six pack of Sierra Nevada Kellerweis Hefewiezen I brought over, he suggested we walk to his neighborhood bar. I replied, "Oh, isn't Rudyard's near here?" "Yeah, but this place is even closer. It's called The Lounge, I think." It was closer. It was two blocks, in fact, a nice walk on a beautiful February evening in Houston. I didn't even see it at first. There is an apartment complex on Commonwealth, but directly in front of it is a small, one-story, flat-roof brick building. It looks like nothing. But there's a low sign in front that says, "The Flat." We went in and met the bartender Mariah. My friend had already ordered a frozen mojito, and he told me that was what they were known for. I told him that I had heard that, so I ordered one. At that time, you wouldn't go in the place looking for interesting spirits or cocktails or anything like that. But the frozen mojito with a rum floater was a great deal. The frozen mojito is damn good, actually. It's like an adult slushie. It tastes nothing like a mojito, really just a mix of rum and sweet and sour. But the mint and lime garnish is a nice touch, and the thing goes down really easy. I was ready for a second one in about 15 minutes. The menu has changed in the last year, though, and they now have more interesting cocktails and a full food menu, I think. Still, I would probably stick to the frozen mojito. But let's talk about the space of the place, which is awesome! The inside is small, but it's tasteful, if a bit dark. The hip hop music was rather loud, and I heard that the DJ goes crazy on Monday nights, and the place gets packed. There are couches set up in little seating areas, and everything is classy, from the light fixtures to the glass panel separating the bathroom area. Really a nice touch. The patio is great, too. It's pretty big, and had plenty of seating with a covered area, some beautiful wood, and a nice mid-century modern touch. This is a place I will go back to. I almost wish I lived in that apartment complex just so I could go drink frozen mojitos every night. Worth it. read more

I've been wanted to try their famous frozen mojitos and I finally got my wish! OMG! My boyfriend and I went on a Tuesday (btw, happy hour is all day on Tuesdays) around 5:30p so it was just us two in there besides the bartender and another person who works there. They have a list of drinks and appetizers but we came just for the mojitos which during happy hour cost either $4 or $4.50. You also have the option of adding a floater (151, rum, tequila, basically anything you want) for a couple of dollars extra. I love mojitos and they did it justice. It was frozen like a frozen margarita and had a great mint flavor. The place is just around the curve on Commonwealth so you might miss it if you don't slow down. Nice decor and hearing Common and Erykah Badu playing on the speakers already told me this was a chill spot to hang out at. I will definitely go back and this time I'm adding the floater! read more

I live walking distance from this bar and I passed by it for a while before one day stopping in on my way home. It is a neighborhood bar and parking is easy with the lot across the street. It seems dark and dingy inside which I kind of like. It has a small patio outside which I like even more. The crowd is not your usual crowd. I will say that the crowd seems very friendly. I have met some interesting people there. Sometimes I like to go here because it is not very crowded. It is just a relaxing little bar to go to. That is all I can say about it. I only go there past midnight after I need a little breathing from a crowded bar. I have never been there sober except to pickup my credit card. If you live in the area you might want to check it out late at night. And for the guys the scenery is not very good there. I am not really sure why I go there. You know that awkward feeling that you get when you approach a bar and none of the bartenders even acknowledge that you walked up? Well, that never happened to me here. NOT that it happens to me a lot ... but what I'm trying to say is that the bartenders were very attentive and quick every time that I approached the bar. The people who were already sitting there didn't even have to lean away to allow me to get closer to put in my order, they were just that good. The first time that I tried a frozen mojito was at Boheme and they were super delish, but The Flat wins compared to them (sorry!). They are MUCHISIMO more delish and have the perfect amount of mint. At only $4 each, it's the perfect drink! I heard from other Yelpers and frequenters of The Flat that the place gets really packed on the weekends, so if you enjoy a lounge with a "roomier" feel, try visiting during the week (but not on Wednesday). When 2 guys that were previously at the bar appeared on the roof and started throwing HUGE rocks down onto the patio and street! We ran inside and told the bartender. So everyone ran for cover. I have been here many times with various different friends. I have always had a great time here! I enjoy the great laid back house music and great DJ's that perform here. Its a small flat located in a neighborhood with horrible parking but absolutely worth going too. I like how low lighted the area is and how comfortable the whole place is. It has a great outside area, but you have to be respectful to the area as there are tons of apartments and houses around. So noise can be a problem to the area. Other than the great people and music minded people that attend here, I loved the FROZEN MOJITOS! I begged and bribed the pretty bartender but she made it aware she didnt have the recipe nor anyone has it other than the owner! They are to die for! Even if you hate the place or hate their food or even hate the music.. you will love this drink! Its worth trying and no one else in the Texas area can compare to this drink. I found myself drinking 100 dollars worth of this drink. I honestly feel this drink should even be in Texas Monthly! This is Houstons best kept secret! I love the ambiance of this cute bar. It's tucked into the corner of a beautiful residential neighborhood. It's a great place to go when you want a drink and music, but don't want to be crowded out. The drink specials are always awesome and the bartenders are quick. The patio is beautiful and spacious. I really wanted to go out and dance the night away, but the music wasn't that great so once I had my drinks I was ready to go. There is a decent amount of seating inside and outside. I may go back and enjoy the pizza because quite a few people had some. The only drawback I have is the amount of limited parking. Because it's in a neighborhood parking is always tricky. I ended up getting a ticket because I parked right across the street from the bar and didn't notice the no parking signs. It would have been nice if the bouncer said there was no parking across the street or there was a sign upon entry. It ended up being an expensive night. read more

Came here on a Wednesday for their reggae night and had a blast! The DJ was spinning reggae and dancehall and, after midnight, threw in some top 40s for good measure. The drinks are way strong, especially the No Worries, which reminded me of a fruity punch. read more

This used to be my favorite spot in the city. Especially when Solange did a set here 3 or 4 years back the place starting doing so well, the increased revenue allowed them to redesign and expand the back patio while maintaining the eleketic vibe and it became even more of a great laid back spot for 80's and 90s jams with some salsa and Caribbean jams as well and good house music on Saturdays. It used to be packed out by 11pm. But in the last year or so, they changed management and they have gotten rid of their usual staff and djs. It is no longer what it used to be. It absolutely so boring and honestly wack. What is very clear is they are trying to keep "certain" patrons out. So every time I go, hoping it will maybe be a good night, I end up leaving within 1 to 2 mins. Empty inside, maybe a few patrons in the patio, and terrible music. This new management has literally done the impossible. Taken a great gem in this city and reduced it to a has been. It is so disappointing to see the Flat fall so far. read more
