Kitty Murtagh's - Irish Nachos

Nantucket is full of restaurants that primarily target the influx of tourists in the summer. Of…read morethose, only a small percentage are year-rounders, serving year-round Nantucketers, who tend to be more down-to-earth and less inclined to pay $30 for a sushi roll than the average fair weather islander. Kitty Murtagh's is one for the year-rounders. Tucked away on a small side street behind the mid-island Stop and Shop, this reliable old Irish pub is low key and pretense free, with a lovely patio for al fresco dining in fine weather. Indoors, there are pool tables and occasionally live music. The food is nothing earth shattering, but it's fairly priced and fairly good -- and the Irish menu items are fairly authentic. No surprise since co-owner John Keane is an Irish transplant who came to Nantucket in the late 1980s to work as a bartender at the Chicken Box, a semi-legendary live music venue a few doors down (where my BIL used to play with his band, incidentally). Keane and his partner, Caroline Montgomery, own not only Kitty Murtagh's, but also Queequeg's, Tree Bar, and Town, downtown mainstays. At a recent dinner, IRISH NACHOS ($15; Melted Cheddar, Bacon, Tomatoes, Scallion, Potato Skins) were well made, with a good balance of crisp potato skin, cheese and other toppings. You won't find Irish nachos on menus in Ireland, unless it's at an American pub. Like green beer and big parades on St. Patrick's Day, they're an American invention -- quite a tasty one, though, unlike most green beers I've had. More authentically Irish GUINNESS BEEF STEW ($20; Gravy, Root Vegetables, Mashed Potato, Dinner Rolls) was made with tender beef and carrots in plenty of gravy. It was particularly lovely to discover that the mashed potatoes that came with the dish were scratch made and quite delicious. It's hard for me to resist an IRISH FRY UP ($20; Eggs, Bangers, Rashers, Black & White Pudding, Charred Tomato, Irish Beans, Mushrooms, Fries), otherwise known as a full Irish breakfast, whenever I see it on the menu, even when it's dinnertime. Kitty Murtagh's version was fairly good. I loved the nicely pan-fried little disks black and white pudding, charred tomato, mushrooms, and eggs, which I requested over easy. Bangers had been a bit over boiled and the "Irish beans" were probably canned (tinned) Heinz baked beans, however. I have a number of Irish friends who enjoy the nostalgia of tinned baked beans, especially on buttered toast, but they're not my personal favorite. Fries were a stand-in for more traditional pan-fried potatoes. We were not overly fond of the IRISH CHICKEN CURRY ($32; Indian Madras Curry, Jasmine Rice, Mango Chutney), which was made with several times more untempered "curry powder" (aka garam masala) than there probably should have been. It was also weirdly and horribly sweet. We do sometimes enjoy the genre we think of as British-Indian food, e.g. the chicken curries you can find at just about any pub in London. I can only guess that the chef mis-measured the amounts of curry powder and sugar while making this batch. Our ten-year old insisted on ordering the GRILLED CHEESE & FRIES ($12) from the children's menu, which she found very much to her taste. I didn't try it, but it was made with amply buttered white bread and American cheese. She said it was good as Panera's, her paragon of grilled cheese. ;) Overall, it was quite a pleasant meal. We'll surely be back with the pup to sit on that pretty patio and try the shepherd's pie.

Really good place to enjoy a Shepherd's Pie (delicious) and a glass of Guinness. The corned beef…read morewas satisfying. Service was very good. The friendly bartender offered up a custom cocktail for my wife which was quite good. We were seated outdoors where it was a bit close to the bushes and may have gotten some bug bites. The high top chairs were a little wonky and the ground was a little uneven but ok overall. 3.5 stars.

They don't look like much in the picture, but we all agreed that the nachos were our favorite: cheesy, perfect amount of toppings, & large side of sour cream and salsa to go with it. I also ordered the French onion soup which I raved about as well! The food overall was so delicious and we left full and happy. We sat in the bar area inside, but it looks like they have a great outdoor space. There are lots of options on their menu. I was able to add fried calamari to my salad which is always a favorite of mine. They definitely struggle with service. Our server was not very attentive or friendly. With that being said, the bus boy went above and beyond his duties and filled in for the server. Not only was he clearing and wiping down the tables, he brought us napkins, mustard, takeout containers, offered to refill our waters, WOW he was just great! Another issue we had was that our entrees came out a few minutes after we received our appetizers. Having all the food practically come out at the same time was very disappointing. We hardly had any time to enjoy the appetizers and gobbled it down so that our entrees sitting on the table wouldn't get cold.

Solid local joint for lunch. It was easy to park and it was warm for Oct, so we enjoyed the sun and…read moreate outside. I had the homemade onion soup, which was pretty good and a classic burger that was juicy and charbroiled nicely with all the fixings. Side of BBQ really added something to the burger. Fries were crispy and hot. Service was okay, a touch slow.

Chef Emmanuel "Manny" Rojas might be one of the best chefs on Nantucket. This former New Yorker and…read moreMomofuku Ssam Bar alum draws from culinary traditions of every sort, from Mexican and Caribbean, to Korean and Thai. Perhaps in reflection of his New York City roots, all these varied culinary cultures are thrown into the same kitchen, tossed together with abandon, and sprinkled with some Chef Rojas magic, resulting in some of the most interesting, intelligent flavors you can find on Nantucket. The current menu includes dishes like Taiwanese fried prawns, duck wontons and street corn strips with miso aioli, cotija and furikake, which play alongside ingredients like kimchi, water chestnuts, and curtido! Perhaps not surprisingly, given Chef Rojas's Momofuku pedigree, the dinner menu features Korean Barbecue Pork, a large-format family meal that closely resembles Chef David Chang's famous bo ssäm, a slow-roasted, sugar-and-salt-cured whole pork shoulder. KOREAN PORK BBQ ($170; sushi rice - cucumber kimchi - korean bbq sauce - ginger scallion sauce - bibb lettuce wraps) allegedly feeds four to six people. Given the small dent that the four of us made in the dish, even with a few growth-spurting ravenous eaters, the dish could probably feed eight hungry adults. Be prepared for leftovers and meal plan accordingly! At a more recent Sunday brunch, we had the wonderfully culturally ambiguous TUNA TOSTADA ($27; pickled jicama - aji amarillo - charred cipollini & sesame puree - shallot). It was a bit Mexican, a bit Peruvian, a bit East Asian -- and a lot delicious. I'm one of those people who don't get all the hoopla over AVOCADO TOAST, but the Progeny seem to be on the bandwagon. The version served at or, The Whale ($22; cherry tomato - fried egg - everything bagel spice on toasted sourdough) might just win me over. Excellent, ripe sliced avocados came topped with a sunny-side-up egg, lots of tender microgreens, and slightly pan-seared sweet cherry tomatoes. The EGGS BENEDICT ($26; choice of country ham or smoked salmon - poached eggs - house biscuit - hollandaise) were classic and well made with perfectly runny yolk and super rich, buttery hollandaise sauce. But the most delicious thing on the plate was the side of hash browns, a generous slab that was beautifully browned to a crisp on the outside. Cocktails are delicious, though a touch wimpy by our lush standards. Predictably, I'm fond of the entertainingly named UNCLE BAD NEWS ($17; jalapeño-infused tequila, passionfruit, lime) since I'm a sucker for any cocktail with jalapeño as an ingredient.
