Finally made it into The Exchequer for their Sunday roast. Four people, a choice of roast meats, various sides and a bottle of wine, for €49. You've to order before Friday for that Sunday and though I'm not generally that organised I managed it this time. The food was brilliant: perfect afternoon-after-the-night-before fodder and a great alternative to brunch. The meat was cooked perfectly - we ordered medium rare - and the joint was HUGE. Sides were delish (honey glazed carrots were a highlight) and you carve the roast yourself at the table, which is a nice homey touch. Oh and the staff were lovely and attentive. Stopped in here for a lunch bite with a colleague last Friday. service was good, we had a quirky waitress who was good fun and helpful. We both went for the sandwich, soup and tea/coffee deal for 8;50. I have to say the value and quality of food is excellent. I went for the pulled pork sandwich with spicy tomato soup while my colleague had the lamb with potato and leek soup. Both were really good. I definitely recommend and will be coming back in with the wife soon. read more

One of the most amazing bars if you're looking for craft cocktails!! All 5 of us were blown away. Our bartender did such a phenomenal job we stuck around for another 2 each. She also gave excellent recommendations for other bars similar to this one. Ask for a drink they might soon be calling "Acid Rain". She made a tart drink that was off the menu and still didn't come up with a name yet. We suggested this and they liked the name. But this was a drink that will make you pucker on the first sip. We arrived in Dublin earlier this evening. Our plan was to eat at a different pub on Dame Circle, but its kitchen closed at 6pm. Lucky for us! The Exchequer offers a fantastic menu. We started with the local cheese and charcuterie board as an appetizer. This included four types of Irish craft cheese and three types of meat (pork, lamb and beef). A perfect way to start a meal! For dinner, I enjoyed the pan seared veal liver with red onion jam, crispy bacon, fondant potato and a fava bean & sage butter. This was my first time eating liver and I loved it! My wife enjoyed the sole dinner, which was on special. Both meals were delectable! We washed both meals down with a pint of Guinness. The Exchequer lived up to its title as "Best Gastropub in Ireland 2010." Highly recommended. read more

Lunch: I would have given this three stars but there were some huge flaws that I couldn't ignore that had to bring it down. The lunch deal seemed like a good find, really filling large specials for a tenner or soup and a big sandwich for 8.50. My girlfriend got the fish and chips, the batter wasn't crispy enough. I got the pulled pork sandwich with beetroot and celeriac slaw, sounds really delicious and it was huge. It was only okay though, the pork was a bit dry and it let it's description down. The biggest disappointment was the soup, beetroot and tomato but so salty that I had to send it back which I hate doing. They offered me leek and potato soup but I opted for the chowder instead. Now at this point I was probably on the verge of 3 stars, but to my outrage (they obviously didn't have chowder ready) they came back and gave me leek and potato soup with a few mussels in it and tried to pass it off as chowder. The cheek! Apart from the terribly insulting failure of service by the chef, the waitress was very nice and the portions are good. I might give this place another try, the menu is really good food for a reasonable price so I really want to like the place. Unfortunately I think the food and the menu might exceed the chefs capabilities :( read more

This place is perfect for after work drinks or for a catch up with the girls. The cocktails are amazing. I have the ginger pornstar, true temperance and the smokey old fashioned. While true temperance might be on the fruity side for some the others are well worth a taste. In particular the smokey old fashioned if for nothing else other than to see how it s presents and to smell that fantastic smoked wood. The food was nice but I was left wanting more, just not more from here. I think being told as we were been seated that we only had the table for 2 hours may have put us off a bit, news to us!!! Feta mousse salad to start, followed by fish and chips, all washed down with a lovely bottle of Pinot (the best bit). Food was nice but I have had better. All in all a great evening catching up with a friend but in my opinion stick to the cocktails and wine list!! read more

This place was really good. My wife and I were in Dublin for a couple night and this is where we ate first. There are other good bars right around this one, but The Exchequer has the best food. My wife had a seafood pot pie that was pretty good. I had the pork bellies. The Sunday drink specials are pretty good. They had mojitos and something else. We had a number of the mojitos before, during and after dinner. Met a few people who were in town for the race. Had a great meal and a great time. They had a high tea, but we did not make it back for that. read more

A cosy pub right in the heart of town - the beau and I dropped in for a quick pint before dinner at F&B next door. Pints are a little pricey as expected - we paid €5.70 for a pint of Tiger but the bartender was a jolly man and the ambience intimate. The weather was unusually muggy &, after the previous night's event of drinking here, I found myself craving their cocktails. After (very little) convincing, the fella & I entered the nearly-deserted bar (around 6pm on a Thursday). Darren, the bar's proprietor, was behind the counter, & we ordered passion fruit & thyme caipirinhas. While we sat at the stools beside an open window, idly noting the Jimi poster on the wall and choice of salsa music at a non-intrusive volume, our lovely drinks were brought to us. It tastes like an Innocent smoothie, or something you order in a foreign tongue while on holiday and spend your life wondering what that gorgeousness in a glass was. All things considered, it felt as though we were on holiday, & to stretch out the feeling before Dublin's weather notoriously turned we ordered one more drink for each of us. This time he ordered the Hello Sailor (basically a dark & cloudy made with Sailor Jerry rum), while I experimented with the Wine Not. His was delicious (not surprising, as it's one of our favorite drinks), & mine tasted perfectly..like grape cold syrup - the kind you want to have when you're ill, but like cold syrup nonetheless. Nice in its own way, considering I don't typically drink any of the liquors that were in it, but not quite for me. By that time, the bar had filled up, & we took that as our cue to head out. At €9 each for the drinks, the bill came to €36 (for the beautifully balanced and crafted quality of them, I only winced a little), & we (a little too) merrily went home. Good meal, good vibe on a Friday evening in the Exchequer. I recommend getting the mussels to share as a starter. I got the special, a seafood tomato-based stew, which had haddock, mussels, and cockles and was quite tasty. Two of us got the stew, the other two got the lamb and fish and chips - the stew was definitely the nicest. The food was good, but I'm not sure I'd go again unless they changed up the menu; I wasn't blown away by the options. The vibe was great for a young-ish crowd (mid-20's to mid-30's) on a Friday night. We enjoyed the 90's music and the energy in the place, but at the same time we could hear each other talk. The Exchequer is a pretty trendy new place on- wait for it- Exchequer Street. It was fairly busy as well for a Monday night and usually I don't go for the hip and stylish bar, I prefer cozy local-style pubs for a few pints. The Exchequer was a bit of a surprise though because it has a nice relaxed vibe, not at all what I'd expected. We only stayed for a pint because we had a movie to catch, and this is probably not the best place for a pint but rather cocktails anyways, but I know I will be back to try their food some time soon, because the chocolate platter looks delicious and I will keep you updated. read more

Had an amazing dinner here over St. Paddy's day weekend. I ordered the guinea fowl (see pics) which was served over celery root puree, we had the special of the day appetizer plate and a passion fruit caipirinha. If I'm ever back in Dublin I'll definitely come back here. Service was great, the ambiance is cool, there's a bar on one side and in the restaurant, a lounge area, and dining area. Over priced delicious cocktails. Since we are tourists we had to stop at the top places on Yelp. We almost did not get to have a drink here because the place was so packed. You really have to be pushy to get a spot to sit and have a drink. We got lucky and found two seats after about twenty minutes. We got the smoky whiskey and the Key Lime Pie Martini. Both were very amazing. We enjoyed the drink menu and the atmosphere. The barkeeps take such pride in each drink and it makes it worth the price. read more

A week ago I spent a lot of time researching good restaurants in Dublin to take some work colleagues out for a nice business dinner. I contacted the restaurant via email and they happily took my reservation and my excitement to have some really good food has grown and my work colleagues were looking forward to it as well. Today, Sunday, I get a cancellation email plus an email from the restaurant that stating that they are cancelling my reservation because they are doing renovations. After some Irish pejorative words came to my mind I had to wonder why they waited until a Sunday? Didn't they know they were going to renovate? Couldn't they have give me a heads-up that it might be a possible? If they are this clueless with something as simple as this might they also be clueless in their customer service or even in the quality of their food. Okay let us assume they are in fact clueless and were surprised as I was about their renovations, couldn't they have at least recommended some other restaurants in the area and just maybe said, "hey if you are interested in my suggestion I would be happy to make a reservation for you since you have been inconvenienced". That would be good customer service. Now I have to spend my vacation (celebrating my wife's birthday) to come up with a new idea. The atmosphere here was really fantastic, and our servers could not have been friendlier or more helpful. We arrived jet-lagged just before the kitchen opened, and they were extremely accommodating, assuring us it would be no problem. The food was good, but nothing to write home about, probably 3 stars, but the bruschetta was delicious and fresh. Prices are not fantastic but also not terrible. During this week they are bosting a "Dine in Dublin - Restaurant Week" menu so my fiend and I enjoyed 3 course meals for 20Euro. We had a wonderful dinner at The Exchequer. We visited earlier in the week and were surprised to be offered a less expensive pre-fixe menu which is available Sunday-Wednesday 5-11pm and later in the week at an earlier evening time slot. The service was lovely and the food was just as much. We started with an irish farmhouse meat and cheese board which was very generously portioned. My husband had the chargrilled 16oz rib on the bone which he really enjoyed. The vanilla crushed potatoes were unique and very good. I had the pan fried veal sweetbreads which were also very good but very, very rich. Overall, lovely meal and beautiful restaurant. We would definitely visit again if we return to Dublin. read more

Recently bought and refurmed by three young ambitious gentlemen, the Exchequer is a MUST for the person who likes a drink served the way it should be. The head mixologist here, Mr. Darren Gerraghty, has represented Ireland in numerous global mixology and barrista championships including the 42 below cocktail world cup in New Zealand. Take my advice and ask Darren to order custom make a cocktail for you, off the menu and you'll be more than satisfied. Had dinner on a Wednesday evening - it was surprisingly very busy and then a server admitted the restaurant was under-staffed which made for slow service. One diner's meal came out cold (steak?!) and another did not receive their wine order. Fish and chips was a little too greasy. I didn't walk in hungry. Needed a wake up screwdriver and then these amazing smells wafted out of the kitchen. We had reserved the Sunday beef roast. Turns out, the smell was just a hot tart tease for one of the most amazing roasts I have experienced. The perfectly prepared slab of roast for 4 was stunningly medium rare with a nicely browned exterior. The sides almost eclipsed the roast - fluffy stuffing, rightly roasted potatoes, mashed potatoes (why not?), and proper gravy. Know what? 3 of us ate the whole darn thing that was made for 4. This has become my go-to place to take out-of-town guests for dinner. Lively atmosphere, great modern Irish food and good drinks. I've never stayed in the bar area-only ever for dinner-but I would definitely recommend as a place for dinner. It's in a great location to head out afterwards and it's not too difficult to get a reservation on a weekend. Although the menu isn't huge, there's a good variety of starters, mains and desserts. Their starters are always particularly intriguing and I've recently noticed an amazing extensive cocktail menu. Will definitely be trying those the next time I stop in, which likely won't be too far in the future. They have a great prix-fixe menu but, unsurprisingly, it isn't available on Saturdays.
