I had just arrived in Dublin and the hotel staff suggested a gastropub a few blocks away for good food and drink, so I went to The Old Spot on Bath Avenue. It was busy yet quiet, old yet upscale, and intriguing. I started with one of the most amazing appetizers I've ever had and, by leaps and bounds, the best scotch egg I've tasted. On the menu, it's listed as: "Free Range Scotch Egg, Andarl Pork & Sneem Black Pudding, Connemara Peat Whiskey Brown Sauce, Smoked Bacon Crumble." Andarl and Sneem are local (which I like). Now, I enjoy black pudding occasionally but find it a bit intense. This use is genius - that intensity, married with the pork sausage, breading, and egg, makes an incredible bite. The eggs were perfectly jammy. And that sauce! Complex and deeply rich with a touch of sweetness reminiscent of apple butter. I licked the plate clean. For my main course, I had the special: amazing crispy-skin perfectly-seasoned sea bass with king prawn, mussels, delicious potatoes that looked like seared scallops (hidden under the sea bass in the picture), romaine lettuce, pickled onions, and a luscious artichoke sauce. It's a bit of a trek from the heart of Dublin, but a bit nice change of scenery. The Old Spot is a Michelin gastropub with a classic atmosphere. First of all, if you're coming for the Sunday Roast, be sure to make reservations ahead of time. I made mine a month in advance and got their first 1pm seating. This was our first stop in Ireland and I was excited to start with a Sunday Roast. For Americans, I call this a full Thanksgiving meal, but they do this every Sunday in the UK. We started off with a Signature cocktail (€13). Both of us also got the Roast Beef Roast (€28), which comes with roasted potatoes, roasted carrots, greens, cauliflower cheese & gravy, and Yorkshire pudding. All the fixings complimented the entire dish perfectly and were each amazing even on their own. I was so full that I barely managed to finish my plate, but it was so good that I didn't want to leave any leftovers. The servers were also quick from seating to ordering and serving. Definitely come here for the Sunday Roast if you can, but the rest of the menu looks delicious as well. read more

THE single greatest dish of mussels on planet earth. Wow, that broth. Not sure what was all in it, but I picked up accents of tomato, some chili/heat and lime that were big time differentiators from the usual suspects of wine/lemon/garlic. The bread they provided became a necessity to slop as much as up as possible, even though I was planning to "save some room" (unsuccessfully). The risotto was very bright and tasty too, but it's hard to follow a dish like those mussels and not get at least a little overshadowed. The staff was AMAZING! The food was great! I have the daily pie (beef) and hubs had fish & chips. We both tasted both dishes and couldn't make a decision about which was best. The fish batter is light & crispy and compliments the flavor of the fish. The beef pie didn't need the little pot of gravy included; it was perfect as is. Our first night in Dublin and we had a delicious dinner at this gastropub. The prices were higher than expected but the food was wonderful and the service was excellent. My ribeye with chips/fries was cooked just as requested and everyone else enjoyed their dinners as well. They call it a gastropub but it seems like more of a full blown restaurant with a pub vibe. The food is excellent. I had the sticky toffee pudding for dessert and I swear they have some secret ingredient in there. I've eaten it many times and made it a few times and never had one as good. We were staying around the corner in Dublin on our trip to the Dingle peninsula for a hiking tour. We just came into town and were Looking for a place for dinner our first night. Although not recommended by our hotel, we happened upon this hidden gem. It is an intimate, cozy place to dine (apparently this was an old pub several years prior). The menu had various selections. The Cream of Celeriac soup with blue cheese was a special and very delicious. I opted for the beet root salad and ribeye and my friend the pork chop. The special for dessert was an orange crème brûlée which was outstanding. But chocolate lovers should not pass on the chocolate hazelnut tart. The Service was attentive and staff very personal and engaging. This place is a wonderful gastropub that Dubliners and out-of-towners must definitely visit. Was on a trip to Dublin recently, and a friend of ours was coming over from Scotland to join us for part of the weekend, and she recommended we had to do a Sunday Roast. I wasn't sure how this all worked entirely, but she was helpful and suggested we do an earlier reservation. Thank goodness we did that and thank GOD we made a reservation! This place was a bit away from the city centre of Dublin, a decent forty minute walk from the Trinity College area I would say. But we were fortunate to have such gorgeous sunny weather that day that it was comfortable, just far from where we were coming from. It feels a little off the beaten path, but once you are inside, you feel like family, and you can tell all the staff and patrons there feel the same as well. I also chose this place as it had both a beef and a chicken roast option, for those in my group who'd prefer one over another. Well, I cannot even begin to say how generous the portion sizes were, and how filled I felt afterwards. Our waitress was lovely and the rest of the staff was highly accommodating. You know this place is popular because when we entered, thankfully with a reservation, another party that came in before was looking to see if there was space, but they were fully booked for the first half session before the later evening one. The decor of this place was also magnificent, and fit in so well with the whole overall vibe. Like I said, a bit of a hike from maybe the "main attractions" but another place that when I come back to Dublin I would definitely come to again. I have hit that moment that every prolific Yelper must experience at some point. The moment where one regrets any previous 5 star review for restaurants, because your current meal blew those way out of the water. I am having to realign my paradigm for rating. I actually feel bad for future reviews because they will have to compare to this. To begin with, I had a beetroot, ricotta, roasted hazelnut, and artichoke salad. Magnificent. I know, seems like a lofty superlative for a salad, but it was perfect. Each bite had an array of contrasting textures and flavors that in combination, were glorious. The creamy ricotta, the sweet beets, the crunchy hazelnut, the hint of lemon... it was an impeccably executed dish. I savored each bite. For the main, I got their beef and cheese burger, which was superb. It came with fries, or chips as they call them here, which were crispy and faultlessly salted (and not overly oily like some fries can be.) The servers were all friendly, and the atmosphere was an eclectic and hip. Each booth had it's own fabric and design; some booths were tufted, some were of leather, some had low backs, some had higher backs. All the chairs were dark wood, but they were all mixed shapes. There were books and an array of framed paintings, all working together for a varied yet cohesive feel. Overall, the look is tasteful and works seamlessly! Great interior design! The Old Spot is a great spot. Especially if you are up for a spot of Sunday lunch... We went by yesterday having phoned to check they had space - they didn't but said we'd be welcome to sit in the bar and eat the same menu. Which we did - a glorious Sunday roast of rare roast beef, duck roast potatoes, scrummy Yorkshires and some great veggies. It comes on this funky platter that you share off (photo attached - think you get the idea). Service was amazingly friendly and afterwards we lingered as two different sets of friends rotated through and we caught up across a good selection of craft beers and nice red wine. And if the food wasn't good enough to warrant a visit, it was also great people watching as swathes of the denizens of D4 who'd been better organized than us and snagged a spot in the restaurant came through the bar for their Sunday lunch - it's a pretty dressed up crowd which just adds to the fun. Would definitely go again - the only question is for a place named after a breed of pig, why no roast pork??? read more

So, we went to the Old Spot, which is, at time of writing a new spot. I sat at the bar and ordered a Yellow Spot, which they didn't have, however they did have Green Spot, which totally hit the spot. This is a completely different proposition from the previous incarnation as the Lansdowne Bar, the Old Spot is a Gastro pub with the emphasis on the Gastro rather than Pub. We went for the set evening menu (29.95 per person) and selected from the small but well designed selection of starters, mains and desserts. We kicked off by sharing a ham hock fritter which was light and tasty and well presented. Mains was of course the ever present slow roasted pork belly which was excellent but perhaps could have been left in the oven for an extra 15 mins for that real crispy finish we all love. The only low point, the only thing that they actually got wrong, was the cheese plate we had for dessert. It was far too small and the crackers/biscuits that were served with the meagre slice of cheese were terrible (far too much going on and who in their right mind includes mixed peel in a cracker!?) It was all washed down with a 25Euro bottle of tempranillo which was very very good. The Old Spot is a welcome addition to the Beggars bush scene and absolutely worth a visit, I'd feel I had missed a trick if I didn't finish by saying for a pint and a good meal, it is a great spot. read more

A place I've been meaning to try for a while, The Old Spot. So we dropped in for some lunch. The interior is only gorgeous. A lovely tiled floor and comfortable pub tables. I think they've captured a lovely atmosphere here with the bar decor. There's proper restaurant seating out the back, but we were able to sit and order in the bar. Great. Prompt staff pleasantly took my order. I opted for the grilled chicken open sandwich from the lunch menu and it was delicious. It came with an avocado and chilli guac type layer upon which the freshly grilled chicken was put and then topped with leaves and cucumber. The guac wasn't hot at all, just a very slight kick that added some great flavour. I also ordered a tea, which turned out to be tea leaves. I would have preferred a teabag, but that's just me being me and it was perfectly fine as a hot beverage. At 11.50 EUR all in, it was a tad pricey but the food was excellent and the service very good. The facilities were extremely clean too. A good first impression. I look forward to trying more from the menu and perhaps a proper drink from the bar. read more

Called in with some friends and had a great time! The place looks really nice, it's also right under the train tracks, which gives it a certain aura. We were greeted by some really nice people, everyone went out of their way to make us feel welcome - even as they were shooing us away because it was closing time (yes, we were here for hours) I can get what I didn't like out of the way quickly: the food was not the best. Granted, I only had two courses - I definitely want to go back, and hopefully give this place the final star. And by "not the best" I mean just that: it was good, solid food but I have had better - especially in the price range. Wine selection was great, we had an awesome Alentejo wine that we loved so much we ordered a second bottle. Some also tried cocktails and were raving about it. The whiskey selection is very interesting as well, so there's enough to please everyone. Ok, that was quite the place. Got there a little early, so I decided to have a pint. Bar out front is a proper little pub. A little dark, lots of wood, lots or character. Sounds like mostly locals. Bartender served a beautiful pint of Guiness, clearly the beverage of choice in the room. Service at the bar was upbeat and friendly. Waiting for the pint to settle was an exercise in patience, but the first sip was more rewarding for the wait. I don't usually drink Guiness at home, but for some reason it seems to taste better here. On to dinner. Server was fantastic. Personable, attentive, and ready with recommendations when asked. She suggested the shrimp, and I can see why. Winner. Shared an order of panko breaded and fried shrimp, awkward portion of three, but that is truly the only complaint. Perfectly done, with a super panko crunch and a light creamy sauce that went perfectly. Companion had the huge house burger, which looked fantastic. Ordered medium, it perhaps came out just a little under, but it still looked great. I had the grilled bone-in pork loin chop, served with a sweet not-quite-barbecue sauce, green beans and cooked tomatoes with chunks of sweet potato. I picked up the bone and gnawed the meat off of it at the end. Another server recommendation, by the way. Very "Irish pub" out front, and beautiful gastropub offerings in the restaurant. Even their mascot on the menu looks to be having fun. This is one of the best restaurant I have ever experienced in Europe. There are too many reasons why this is way above how UK approach the experience for foods, and perhaps thats why Ireland wants no part of it. :) As a foodie, my soul is at peace once I saw their logo, friendly staff, bright eyed employees. There is the Nicole Kidman look a like who comes by to pleasantly explained anything her staff could not. On to the food, this is the opposite of anything Irish. Lots of choice cuts of meats, calamari that rivals any seaport towns. The chef know his parings well, there is nothing left to chance. Definitely make reservations to be assured a table, but I don't think you have to do it more than a day in advance (or same day if you call/go by early enough). The server was knowledgeable and helpful. The place had a really nice vibe, and the cocktails were very good as well. It's a good place for a slightly nicer dinner, without being too fancy. The menu is quite small, so I felt limited to what I could order, and my asparagus starter was alright, but my mushroom Gnocchi was AMAZING! Stop what you're doing and order this right now. Yea, I'm raving about a pasta dish, so you better believe it was phenomenal. I raved about it so much everyone at the table tried it, and agreed they would be ordering it next time, it was actually suggested they might order it for dessert. So much flavor, perfectly cooked, great portion! I don't think I've had a better pasta dish in my life, and restaurant pasta is rarely something to write home about. The dessert was also fab: a very rich mousse with a peanut ice cream that was a delicious combo, but a bit overwhelming after such a large meal, difficult to enjoy when you're stuffed! Next time I'll skip the starter. Enjoyed some great wine here as well, was happy to find an excellent Portuguese wine on the menu. The cocktails are quite generous, the Ultimate G&T was nice, and is served in a fishbowl. Also tried the chocolate orange which was again, tasty but very sweet and rich after a big meal. Love the cozy factor in this place, even the occasional train that shook the restaurant, though it's misleading when you consider the prices they're charging! Stopped in for dinner on the recommendation of our hostess at Ariel house. At first it was pretty deserted but the crowd picked up steadily. Jennifer, our server, was delightful and perfectly attentive. We had wine and beer which was always cheerfully and promptly refilled. The hubs had the monkfish appetizer which he said he wouldn't order again. We split a wedge salad which is significantly and blessedly smaller than those in the states. We also split the hamburger which was delicious. Carrot cake (the special) for dessert was the best carrot cake I've ever eaten. Truly a treat. This should be four stars. Heck, the service deserves five stars and the Kinnegar bottled beer (both the saison and black IPA) deserves six. Great location for noshing down before or after a rugby match. But the ribs ... they ain't a patch on Freddy's: Frank Underwood would not be impressed. OK, it's not the crime against ribbed meat that Pizza e Porchetta will serve (i.e., it's not been boiled), but the sauce is missing a whack of smoked paprika - something other than roast tomato. The same goes for the bouillabaisse. Too much tomato; not enough fish heads and crustacean shells. Don't get me wrong: I love a good tomato, but these dishes left me cold.
