I was looking for dinner my first night in Dublin. I found this place while walking around and it was not too far from my air bnb. I saw panna cotta on the menu and had to try this place. It was cozy inside like a 2 story house. I was seated on a high top. I started with a rhubarb spritz. I tried the turnip soup for my app. It was delicious and comforting. I did the halibut with squid ink risotto. That was amazing. I finished off with the panna cotta that had some lychee ice around it. It was refreshing and I loved it. The service was great here. I came in on a Friday night at 7, without a reservation. I had actually tried to go to another restaurant but they were full. They recommended The Chophouse. I was warmly greeted as soon as I walked in. After they realized I didn't have a reservation, they still offered me a choice of two tables in the bar area. Since I was by myself, the tall table for two was perfect and was so nice that it was tucked away in a corner. I was taken care of by several servers and they were all super friendly. I was brought water. They also have a great cocktail menu and wonderful beers and wines. I ordered the fish and chips. It came out quickly and was piping hot. The steak itself seasoned perfectly and had a nice grill on the outside while still not overcooking the interior. The size of the cut was excellent and overall, a very nice steak. The reason they are only getting 4 instead of 5 stars, especially for Irish standards, is it was a little overcooked probably leaning towards medium-well instead of medium and it was a bit chewy. Settled in with some great gin based cocktails (fantastic gin menu here and all gins have different flavors profiles - not like floral/Forest English gin). My wife had the mozzarella salad and I had the gnocchi. So pillowy soft. Great sauce too. I had the ribeye and she had the lamb. I was looking forward to trying this place and it ended up being my favorite dining experience in Dublin! When we first got there the place was pretty empty but it slowly filled up. The place was very cozy (there were pillows on the bench seats which was a cute addition). The menu was small but every dish sounded delicious. We started off with the pan seared king prawns and it was very satisfying! The sauce was so flavorful but not too heavy and the prawns were served with salad greens. I highly recommend trying this! Our waiter also brought out raw meat on a board so we could have a look at the night's selection. I had never seen such beautiful, bright red, fresh cuts of steak! It was a carnivore's dream! I was going to order the pork chops but after they brought that out, I got the 35 day dry-aged rib eye. One word: Wow!! I requested medium and it was a little on the rare side but still unbelievably juicy. I loved how it came with onion marmalade and your choice of sauce (pepper or bearnaise). The fries it came with were good but not the best fries I've ever had. Keep in mind the steak was so huge, I only ate about half. I was sad I had to leave the rest behind. The ambience of this place is very warm like you are visiting your aunt that is a great host. Inside, children were running up the stairs singing jingle bells. The waitress brought us complimentary bread. Water was served in sparking glass, there was a warm heater and rugby was playing on tv. The fish was a large size - about the size of "Wreck it Ralph's" fist deep fried in a crunchy batter. But the pork belly was the siZe of a cassette tape... Would have been better if peaches were still hot but tasty none the less. Himself had a scallops starter which was incredible and a really nice size. I had a medium rare fillet steak and he got a T bone. Great since they are hard to find. Served with chips mine came with gratin and red wine jus. We had side of broccoli and a cauliflower cheese dish. No space for dessert. The bearnaise sauce that came with his T bone was the most incredible I've ever had. You could eat it with a spoon. A steak house in a posh neighborhood in Dublin. Amazing and rare for a traditional country like Ireland. I am a huge meat lover, even though I also can appreciate cheese and wine. While in Ireland, I spotted this spot out on a morning jog. While the city has been taking over by pub traps for tourists, and American style fast food take away's, here is a place you can sit dine, converse and catch a game. But since I was on my own, the locals gave me suggestions and even tips on understanding the absolute insane game of Hurling(Not throwing up for my American friends). But before all that, the dining area provided a fine dining experience with lots of local interpretations of prawns, crab cakes and a very unique style of steaks. The selection is just like any fine dinning by Wolfgang Puck or Gordon Ramsay, your cuts are brought out, and the negotiation of options struck. The idea of leaving a stuffy fine dinning and immediately move to a section with a pub and sports on the tv is a great idea. The menu is short and concise, with your usual variety- chicken, steak, pork... with chips, bread or salad- but it's very well done. The food is tasty, I had the steak and it was yummy- well done with just a hint of pink just like I'd asked. The service was fast and the waiter polite. The food is a bit on the pricey side, but this is Ballsbridge after all. My fillet was rather chewy, despite the fact that I ordered it medium rare; air conditioning seemed to have taken a vacation; billing a large group was rather a hassle. Classically, this would qualify as a restaurant that overpromises, but underdelivers. However, my friends mentioned that their meat was perfect, so perhaps I just ordered the "wrong" dish. I had very high expectations for our lunch here. This restaurant is quite well known in the area, michelin recommended and on the pricey side. You would expect really something quite special then wouldn't ya? It's a lovely spot, really classy and nicely decorated. We were seated upstairs where it was a bit more quiet than buzzy downstairs. Since we came with quite a large group we ordered of the set lunch menu - which was 3 course. When we arrived the breadbaskets were already on the table, 3 different types of really fresh bread...great start! The rest of the food...my goats cheese starter was nice, but just that. I mean, anyone can put some cheese on toast, sprinkle walnuts on top and put a bunch of rocket on the side. (pet peeve of mine: most awkwardly difficult thing to eat : a mountain of rocket.) The hake cassoulet looked picture perfect. It came with chorizo bits, broccoli, beans, spinach and a tomato-y, spicy broth. My fish was a bit overcooked and hence slightly dry. The cassoulet itself tasted as if it hadn't been cooked long enough....the veggies were still quite crunchy, but a proper cassoulet should be melt in the mouth and tender. It's rare that I wouldn't finish a maincourse...it just didn't do it for me. The highlight was the dessert. a lovely light orange sponge cake with mascarpone on top. I could have had another portion of just that. Most of my fellow diners ordered the steak, which was a massive cut and looked quite impressive. However, when I looked around me no-one finished theirs and it seemed most cuts had lots of gristly bits in it. Overall, quite a disappointment. This is a steakhouse and a very good one at that! Let me start out by saying that I'm a bit of a meat snob. For the most part, I feel I can bbq a better steak than most restaurants. This place would definitely give me a run for my money. The waitress was very knowledgeable about wine and helped me and my wife pick out a great wine for our meals. The steak was extremely flavorful and cooked to perfection. For whatever reason this is something that most so called steakhouses have trouble with but not these guys. We also decided to split a dessert, the chocolate opera. It was delicious and well executed. I would have snapped a picture of it, but I couldn't wait to dig in. It's interesting to me that The Chop House is referred to as a Gastro Pub because it really takes what you may consider as pub food and brings it to a different level. We came here after seeing this place featured on Anthony Bourdain's show The Layover and wanted to give it a try. We made reservations which is recommended as they get busy as the night progresses. We were greeted and seated immediately. Our server brought us water and bread and shared the daily specials. My husband ordered the prime ribeye (dry aged 35 days) and I chose the lamb special. We also decided to take a break from beer and ordered glasses of tempernillo wine which was delicious. The food was very good and the presentation was beautiful. My plate looked too pretty to eat, but I took one for the team. The lamb was cooked perfectly and the vegetables had great flavor. My husband enjoyed his prime rib too; he said it was a well made and flavorful. Service was very good throughout our meal. Our server made sure we had what we needed and we were well take care off. How things have changed since our first visit to The Chophouse and it makes me wonder if there is a correlation between an improving economy and a deterioration in service. We arrived 20 min early and were seated at a table that had not been cleaned off properly, considering this was 5.45 and the place was not busy with loads of tables i thought this odd. I had to ask for the table to be wiped down. This set the tone for the rest of the evening. The Chophouse must have shares in blackboards and chalk as they have at least 5 boards dotted around the walls telling you the specials, the cocktails, the cheeses, the craft beers, the gin cocktails and so on. I was dizzy scanning around the room trying to locate them. Is there really a need for this? Would a single specials board not suffice and then update the other menus accordingly? So its time now to place our order, the specials were not explained and our waitress curtly said "what do you want to eat"? Is this how food orders are now taken? We order the tuna starter and the fishboard. Both starters were good. The steak was ordered medium rare and arrived as ordered sitting on the same wooden board we had experienced before. The fish and chips was just OK, the tempura batter a little soggy in places. For desert we had assiette of chocolate which compromised of chocolate mousse, chocolate and hazelnut brownie and a chocolate raspberry opera. This was by far the best thing we had eaten. I had a espresso martini which was wonderful. I get the impression that there are regular customers and they for sure experienced a better service than we secured which is great for them but I certainly would not want to come back again. We shouldn't have returned and we wouldn't have tarnished what was a wonderful first visit with great service with this unpolished, unprofessional and mediocre experience. What do yis want to eat?! Yes that is how the waitress at The Chophouse addressed us when she came to take our order!!! After about two years since our last visit we decided to return to The Chophouse when my fiancé's brother came to stay with us for the weekend. I don't know if I had rose tinted memories of my last visit but I found this trip to be very hit and miss.. We arrived about 20 minutes early for our table but as the place was practically empty it wasn't an issue. The specials are up on a blackboard. In fact there's more info on the blackboards dotted around than on the above menus. The bread that was brought to the table was good. So we were asked what we wanted to eat. I chose the rare yellow fin tuna. Fiancé and his brother decided to share the fish board. For main course I chose the 8oz fillet of Hereford Beef. I asked for Bearnaise sauce and ended up having my sides changed from the standard gratin potato and spinach and garlic cream to chips, caramelised onions & green beans. I won't complain about that as I don't actually like potato and the lads got to eat the chips. Fiancé chose the fish and chips and his brother went with the ribeye. In case your wondering the sauce on my board was pepper not Bearnaise but that was easily swapped over! For dessert I chose the Asiette of chocolate (chocolate raspberry opera, chocolate hazelnut brownie @ chocolate mousse) with an americano. Fiancé had an espresso martini and his brother tried the poitin smash. OK so the food is great. The service not so much. I assume they're mental busy when there's games on at Aviva but they weren't that busy at that hour (and the rugby game was away that day!) We were brought to our table. It had been reset from the last sitting but not wiped down. We had to ask for the table to be wiped and it was done half arsed. They wiped one half of the table down and left the glass marks on the other half of the table! Other tables were brought a board with all the various cuts of beef and these were explained. I mean I know steak but I assume that that is part of the experience if you decide to visit here. I could be wrong but it seemed to me that if you were a regular you got a lot of attention from the wait staff. That sort of attitude would hardly encourage me to return. Ireland during St. Patrick's day is a tourist magnet (appropriately so). . . Kinda gave me a home away from home feel which was nice but it got old after awhile. I mean I traveled to another country/continent to get away right?!? Enter The Chop House. Located in Dublin 4, away from the touristy areas of Dublin, away from the Temple bar district, but conveniently close to our B&B. The place was swarming with locals. In fact upon our unannounced arrival, a local was asked to relocate his pint and bottom to another seat so we can occupy his table for dinner. Talk about service right?!? Great GREAT bartenders with innovative cocktails, wine selection and of course local beers on tap. Service was warm, friendly, and everything one would expect from a local neighborhood joint. Being a Chop House, they had mmmmmmmmeat galore!! Cut choices are displayed for your viewing pleasure prior to selection on a huge cutting board. My party shamefully did not order meat because we had a huge lunch and wanted a light dinner (which was still delicious) but we did want an overview of the different available cuts. Despite how busy they were, we were given that overview of the different cuts of meat, where they are located, what to look for, etc. Awesome ambience, great drinks, delicious food and friendly service - what more can one ask for?!? Brave... that's how I would describe our dining companions; they have known us for quite some time and are indeed aware of the fact that we were likely to bring the 2year old with us... but they joined us for dinner none the less. The place is nicely and simply decorated and comfortable, we settled in and were promptly handed menus - a nice mix of dishes and the Slow Roast Belly of Spotted Pig was the dish that hollered "pick me pick me" to 3 of the 4 diners. The 4th went for the Roast Fillet of Hake with Red Cabbage Fondue. The Hake was great by all accounts, the pork was likewise tasty but we were all of the opinion that it missed the mark, even though pork belly is very fatty they left too much fat instead of letting it melt away during the roasting process - the presentation too was a little odd - served as it was in a triangle looking for all the world like a slice of tiramisu. For a gastropub in Ireland I think this place is pretty good but as far as gastropubs in general go I think it there is some work to be done. Overall the food is good but more Bistro good than anything else, it lacks the rustic element to the food which coupled together with a deep understanding of how great food is produced is the recipe of a great gastropub. My dining companion, a beer aficionado, pointed out that any such venue should have a beer list with the tasting notes along side the wine menu - he's absolutely right. We started with the New Zeeland Sauv Blanc for wine - a Marlborough which you would have though was a safe bet but it was not great, I would question why a place aimed at foodies would have it on their menu. The house red however was excellent and at €20 a bottle, very reasonable. Leaving that aside we did enjoy ourselves and I would go here sooner than Juniors across the road. My one big gripe would be with the service which was pretty appalling to be honest. The staff simply didn't seem to understand what it takes to keep more than one table happy at a time or indeed how keep an eye on a busy restaurant. So, definite potential but as my teachers said time and time again when I was at school - must try harder...a lot harder. read more

The Chop House is on Anthony Bourdain's list of recommended restaurants in Dublin, so we made sure to check it out when we were visiting. It also helped that it was around the corner from our b&b so we made a last-minute reservation on a Monday night and stopped in a short time later. The offering at The Chop House is (of course) centered on steak, and I would advise anyone dining here to avail themselves of that. I had the rib-eye steak with peppercorn sauce which was served on a wooden board with a big cone of fries on the side, and was excellent. My sister had a special which was a pork chop, and was also excellent (so yes, focus on the grilled meats here). The menu also presents a nice, fresh offering of salads and good starters to get the meal going. The restaurant itself is bright and contemporary on the interior, and the staff were courteous and friendly. The wine list also has an interesting offering of very moderately priced bottles to go with the meal. The thing I really appreciated at The Chop House was the emphasis on local (or as local as possible) sourcing. Overall, a sure bet in the Ballsbridge area and probably worth traveling for if you're looking for a great steak in Dublin! read more

For reasons that are too boring to explain, I ate here twice in the one weekend recently. Once on a packed Friday night when the place was hopping, and once on a quieter Sunday afternoon. Both times were excellent. Here's why: - Interesting menu, with a lot of local stuff on the board, good mix of fish, meats and even some decent veggie options - Steaks looked "savage" ; everyone who had them declared them excellent, including our hungry-horse bunch of 8 lads on the Friday night - Those of us to had the fish, either for starters or mains, were very impressed; tastily cooked fish, decent accompaniments, well presented - There was only one niggle we had: one person thought the cheese course was mildy stingy; he said so, an the staff handled it perfectly; following a discussion about cheese plate sizes, another was produced on the house. The way the issue was dealt with was exemplary, as so many places handle this kind of thing in defensive mode only, and the atmosphere sours, and all you remember about a place is the row you had, as opposed to the food you had. Other things: - Good coffee - My veggie colleague declared the risotto he had to be one of the finest he'd had (however: I think he was being slightly generous and was hungover - not saying it wasn't good - just not sure it was THAT good :-) - great selection of wine - Whatever way they're training the staff there - they're great! I'd never heard of the place (as the last time I was in there it was for a cold wet pint before a rugby game because Slatterys was so jammed) So - I'd recommend for Groups, for afternoon brunch, and just in general. The quality of meat was the star of this evening. Cocktails were a nice variety and the bartender delivered as promised with my Gin Gimlet. It can be a bit confusing w chalk boards and arrival. However, if you smile and grab the first person you see when you walk in they are quick to help you. Made reservations and was seated within 2 minutes upon arrival for 7:30 dinner. I chose The Chop House because I'd heard that Anthony Bourdain (author of the excellent 'Kitchen Confidential') said he'd eaten "the best f-ing meal in my life!" there....suffice to say, no further recommendation needed. I knew the place was a steak house but didn't realise it was also a sports bar (please God, no!) We were seated in a sun-trap area (which could be a bonus if there was air-con but not so without it!) However, the noise of the TV became but a blur and the sun-trap appeared to be a more pleasant proposition once I'd slapped my shades on. In need of refreshment and an aperitif, I went for a gin gimlet cocktail (with cucumber and elder flower), it was just the job! I had the squash tortellini to start. It was melt-in-the-mouth deliciousness and provided a great contrast to the crispy sage leaves. I don't eat steak often but I thought what better place to try some cow, and so I opted for the 35-day aged Limousine beef rib-eye steak. This is a really tasty cut, and it was especially moreish with the garlic butter sauce. But weighing in at 10 Oz, it defeated me and I left about a third on the plate. The steak came with equally delicious chips (cooked three times, why of course) with a creamy avocado garlic dip. I wasn't able to finish the chips but the dip vanished very quickly! Okay, I don't feel I should really write a review because I didn't eat anything. It was far out of my price range and that is why: I will still do it! Try to stop me. My friend and I went there after an exhausting, overly sunny day at the Sandymount shore (I heart people say "beach". HA!) and just ducked in for a drink. It was the first restaurant we saw, hence we just went. It was nice and clean, they had a nice terrace, most of the waiters were friendly enough. Now the big problem I had was: while we were having our drinks on the terrace already shouting over the traffic, someone decided to turn up the terrible terrible music really loud. I am not picky and I don't complain a lot, but I swear it was dreadful. For a restaurant in that price range (Yeah, I get grumpy when I cant afford food) that shouldn't have happened. I live in the neighborhood and was hoping to add this place to my list of favorite locals but after three visits with progressively poor and at times obnoxious service I can say this is a definite no. This is really unfortunate because the food is exceptionally good: fresh, seasonal, inventive, and damn tasty! It really is too bad! First things first - The Chophouse does the best steak I have ever had, the Fillet of Dundalk Beef. Un. Be. Lievable. Now the other stuff - the staff are efficient, if a little cold, and the ambiance is virtually non-existent so I certainly wouldn't be booking any parties for the venue or going there looking for a fun night out but lets be honest it's called "The Chophouse" not the "The Partyhouse" and DAMN that steak is good. read more

Great menu, some nice wines, could do with having a few more by the glass, a nice terrace which catches the evening sun, a buzz dining room that is slightly sparse for my tastes but fine nonetheless. Food snob that I am there are certain techniques and presentations I feel must be followed. A Porterhouse steak should be cooked medium-rare, removed from the heat, placed on a large wooden board with a lip around the side to catch any juices, and brought to the table to show the customer. It should then be allowed to rest for at least 20 minutes. It should be carved at the table. The board, with carved meat and bone, should be left in the center of the table. It should be served with flakes of good sea salt, maybe some fresh cracked pepper and that's it. A side of french beans and possibly some sauted potatoes also works. Simple. Bearnaise, maybe, but not traditionally. The Chop House chefs really got it all right on the cooking front. The food itself tasted great but my huge complaint is that they carved it away from the table. The whole point of a porterhouse between 2 is that they carve it in front of you and you can both get stuck in. Otherwise you'd just order a regular steak. It's like pulling the cork on a bottle of wine out of view of the customer. Just not on. It's a shame to achieve high standards in the kitchen only to be let down by a very poor front of house. Some of the worst service I have ever experienced in a restaurant. The guy serving us was supposed to be the maitre'd and initially left us sitting outside for 20 minutes before even bringing water. When I went in to enquire I was told they sometimes forget about tables they seat on the the terrace. Once we eventually ordered he brought our wine after we had our food in front of us. He complained that they had 120 covers and his feet were sore. A laughable complaint from someone in the business. From the moment we sat down I really felt like we were a source of irritation for the man and once I knew our service was not going to be improving I have to admit I began intentionally pissing him off, which cheered me up no end. Looking at other reviews the staff usually seem to be better. Maybe I caught them on an off night, maybe the guy who served us is normally charming and polite, maybe he normally executes service of a porterhouse in the correct way, maybe he usually gives this expensive cut of meat his utmost attention once it leaves his chef in the kitchen, but not last night. I can't remember ever before having a meal that made me feel embarrassed. The meat (the porterhouse steak) was tougher than I've yet had in my entire meat-eating career, and the crab was tasty, but full of hard bits. The "tempura" white fish, in fact, was decent. But from a restaurant named Chop House, you'd expect at least average steak. I should say the steak was flavorful, but given the astounding ratio of gristle to edible meat, I can't in good conscience recommend this place to my Yelpy brethren. Normally I wouldn't complain about service, but our waiter seemed miserable (low pay?), and flung dish rag water all over our table as she bussed the table next to us. Why was I embarrassed? This was my girlfriend's birthday, and I hoped to bring her to a lovely restaurant for a delightful meal -- a meal recommended by Anthony Bordain, no less! Big Ehh! If you are looking for a wannabe fern bar this is your place. Gastropub? Really. I had a fine crab cake and a fairly uninspired caesar salad. Did the rocket with my crab cake make it gastro? Did the anchovie staring at me from my caesar salad make it gastro? Your guess is as good as mine. My wife and daughter split fish and chips with mushy peas. More eh. Service was pleasant. Overall expensive and they charged extra for my wife and 3 year old to split fish and chips (are you kidding me!?). It looked like the place was "filled" with people in town on business. I guess dubliners already know better. Next time I will wait for a table at Junior's across the street. read more

We popped over the road from Juniors to have desert and coffee. Nice interior and we were greeted as we entered. The safe were lovely, very pleasant and friendly. The place has a good fresh feel to the place. Now remember we did only pop in for desert and coffee - I had the dessert which was Creme Brulee. Not good out of 10 I would give it 5 at a push far too sweet and not set. It was served with ice-cream very not good ....icy bits in it which I think may be caused by unsuitable storage? 3 stars for the desert. However I was told by someone who has been there a number of times the belly of pork is better than Juniors. So I will look forward to going there again and having the pork to see for myself. On the way out I noticed some of the food being served looked very good. I asked why it was called 'Chophouse' apparently because of the chopping boards the food is served on - just so you know and the owners used to be at the School house. read more

The Chop House is pricey but tasty...a solid steakhouse located conveniently on a fun corner away from the crazier, touristy neighborhoods (like Temple Bar). We headed there late one evening, after finding ourselves without a lot of dining options still available, given the hour. Not only did we get seated right away (despite the fact the place was otherwise packed!), but tasty brown bread arrived right away, warm with a big hunk of creamy cold butter. We ordered steaks and chips, because when in Rome...The steak was richly flavored, and while it was a little overdone for my taste (I prefer rare, this was medium to medium-rare), I still enjoyed it. The chips were tasty, too, although I have to say that my own preference when it comes to potato accompanying meat is for it to be a baked potato or au gratin...fries are a little too heavy! But, they were tasty, I was hungry, and I enjoyed! Best part? I had plenty of leftovers for the next day! Would I come here again when in Dublin? If I was looking for a steak, absolutely!! read more
