We had quite a mixed group of people that wanted to find a nice fine-dining restaurant for the night. Darwin's was pointed out to us by several locals as a steakhouse that had amazing meat, but also specialized in vegan dishes. This is the kind of disclaimer that's usually very off-putting. If you say you specialize in two types of cuisine, especially two types that are so far away from each other (Vegan food and bloody, juicy, barely-dead meat), then mostly likely you're only mediocre at both. I was wrong. My vegetarian friends were raving about their dishes. They were filling and very flavorful, and from what I saw the presentation was very elegant. The steak though. 2 of us split what looked like an enormous tomahawk ribeye. This could have fed 3 easily, even 4 would have walked away with a full meal's worth of steak. They brought the ribeye out to show us before they cooked it, and the marbling on this bad boy would easily have been USDA-Prime if it was graded in the states. It was beautifully cooked to medium rare, pre-sliced off the bone, and is up there the best steaks I've ever had. Maybe even THE best steak I've ever had. I'm sorry Peter Luger As a born and raised New Yorker and avid cannibal, this steak could have been half the size and still would have cost a $100 at a prime steakhouse for a single person. At Darwin's however, this cost 75 Euros and fed 3. This steak had no right being this cheap. The service was quite impeccable. Our servers were very attentive around our table, constantly refilling our wine and replacing cutlery. The decor was perfect for a fine-dining steakhouse, as in it was a little under-lit for atmosphere but not so dark that it would only ever be good for date nights. Apart from anything else, Darwins is deserving of praise for naming itself after the greatest naturalist of the 19th century, possibly of all time. Even if the food was gammy, I'd still think the restaurant was great. Let's everyone start naming their restaurants after famous scientists. Gallileo Gallilei Pizza, or Max Planck Frankfurters und Sauerkraut Haus. When I heard the cool post-modern name, and saw the stylish facade, I assumed that Darwins was going to be some sort of minimalist nouveau cuisine eatery. Far from it. Darwins serves mainly straight up meat dishes, with a few fish dishes thrown in for good measure. Considering that Darwins is kind of a fancy restaurant, the prices weren't too prohibitive. I had the pork belly and champ, which was delicious, and only set me back €20. If you decided to go for one of the many steak options on the menu, however, you'd be looking at paying more in the region of €30+ And the service was uniformly excellent: serving staff available whenever you wanted but not constantly buzzing around your table, everybody very friendly and efficient. I cannot say enough good things about Darwins. I booked a group of 15 in there last week. I was looking for somewhere where I would enjoy the food, that would cater for the many vegetarians in the group and the menu would not be seen as too complicated to my parents! After a discussion with the restaurant via email I arranged the group booking and a price for a set menu. The menu still had lots of options and seemed to cater for everyone. Again my experience with the staff was great. They were friendly and accommodating and so good with any request that came their way. They even allowed one of the group to order off the set menu at no extra charge. The food was good, the wine was good, the atmosphere was lovely and relaxed. I was looking for a crowdpleaser and the crowd was pleased - lots of people remarked on how good the food was... and I took the credit as if I had cooked it myself! read more

Great Steakhouse with an especially great weeknight dinner deal. The meal includes a choice of a starter, a main course, and a dessert. I got a bread and pesto platter to start out, with the pesto definitely standing out as high quality. For the main I had the 10 oz. strip steak, medium rare. It had a good soft texture and lots of flavor. I ordered a garlic sauce to pair with it which even enhanced the flavor even more (I love garlic). The mashed potatoes were *superb* -- just the right texture and the perfect combination of buttery and salty. Got the brownie and ice cream as the dessert and it was probably the most average part of the entire meal. The brownie was a little dry for my taste. Now... the best part: all of that is only 29 EUR on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday!! The same deal also applies before 7 pm on weekends. I hate to say it, but I felt this place was highly over rated. I had heard fantastic things about it and was really looking forward to trying it out but unfortunately, I was pretty disappointed! Food was very average and the menu wasn't exactly vast. I thought it was pretty pricey and I got a bit annoyed when I saw that there was a 10% service charge added to our bill even though there were only 4 of us. A group over 6 or 8 people I can understand, but 4 people? Come on! I wasn't crazy on the restaurant's interior and it was pretty dark so it was difficult to read the menu. This place is interesting - as the name implies, it's named for Charles Darwin. The decor is themed for Darwin with a big gorilla statue overlooking the bar and large painting of the various stages of human evolution (imagine giant painting of Homo Erectus). It can be a little off putting to dine next to a giant painting of Cro Magnon Man. As for the food, this place is big into the meats. Lots of steaks and lamb and a chicken dish. They cook the steaks well, but not the best steak of my life. The appetizers were actually more delicious than the steak (in my opinion). If I ever come back, I'm going to stick with the appetizers rather than another steak. read more

It's a lovely family run establishment and you feel like your walking into your own parents home with the hospitality that you receive. However I suppose that leads to the quaintness of it all. I'm not a vegetarian but don't think this restaurant should be labeled as such. The menu was not particularly vegetarian like, more so that it had a couple of vegetarian options like most do. Started was prawns which were very tasty. Served with heads on :( but easy to pull off and the rest was shelled. I really don't like 'working' to be able to eat my meal. Please serve ready to consume! Skate wing was my choice of main. I think this was the fish of the day. It was ok. A satisfying fish dish but nothing amazing. Time to squeeze in dessert and this was most disappointing. Labelled as 'brownie' the only way it matched this description was colour. What was served was chocolate cake. This is no brownie. It's cake. Calling it another name does not hide this fact. This place is particularly known for their steaks, but sadly I wasn't in a steak kind of mood, so I can not comment. What did I eat I hear your cry.... well for starters I had a roast pork belly slice, which came with relish, salad and some salsa. Quite tasty. For main I had the bouillabaisse. It was packed with tiny prawns, fish, baby potatoes and the chorizo pieces gave it a nice kick. Portions were not overly big, so actually I was still quite hungry after finishing this. Normally I wouldn't be able for 3 courses! I ended the feast with a vanilla deconstructed cheesecake. Which was light and a bit tangy. A nice meal. Did it wow me? nope. It changes slowly, though remains an indescribable hum; never acquiring any real substance. If you were here to witness this, you would notice it increases in volume until it is almost unbearable. Our eyes meet, and as we stare into each others' souls, I cannot but help wonder. Who ARE you? We sit in this position without moving, as hundreds of faceless diners bustle in and out of every other table, leaving only a blur of motion in their wake. How long do we stay like this? Have we always been here? Communication, an insurmountable barrier; movement, apparently impossible. Yet, here we are; maintaining an almost perfect clarity. As though inconceivable knowledge were at my fingertips and could be reached if only the last invisible barrier would crumble. I must know who this person is. A sudden gasp and my body jolts into action. I open my mouth to speak, but my mysterious dining partner does so before I can make a sound. "I don't think my steak is cooked properly." read more

Forgot to take our order (had to ask twice) Forgot our sides (arrived when steak was finished) Told us we wouldn't be charged for the sides - they forgot to do this Asked them for a mid-meal drink ...you can see where this is going. Asked them for the bill, three times... The steak was really tasty and that is why they're getting one star. Darwins fell far short in the only thing that really matters at a steak house. The filet was of mediocre quality, flavorless, and served with an odd crusty consistency on the outside. At least it was cooked to the ordered temperature. The accompanying 'buttered' mashed potatoes were a bit hard - designed more for presentation than the buttery-smooth taste that would really enhance the steak. The staff are all really friendly although the timing was a bit inconsistent. There is a second star because the experience is decent enough. If I'm being honest I've walked past this place many a time and never even given it a second glance. I had no idea about what the type of food served there and hadn't really heard anyone mention it before. I assumed it was another run of the mill place on Aungier St. So I was a little bit shocked when I was informed that it had made a number of list of being in the top 3 steak restaurants in Dublin. Really? And I had missed this!?? So table booked and off we trotted. On a Wednesday. So a nice sized crowd in there without being too busy. Following a brief history of the restaurant from the owner, my party arrived and off to the table we went. It would be rude to go to a steak restaurant and not eat steak, but the choices?! Rib eye? On or off the one? Fillet? T-bone? Strip? Where do you start? It has to be the fillet right? No hiding away from cooking it right with that one..... The question then, do we just dive straight in or look at the other tasty options on the menu? Darwins offer a pre-theatre menu also, allowing 2 or 3 courses of a select bunch of dishes. For an additional surcharge you can add the fillet steak to that. So fillet steak and dessert...? I'm sold The steak arrived and just sat there on the plate, perfectly cooked, medium rare, just waiting to be eaten. Served with creamy mash potato, fried onions, vegetables and a lightly dressed salad. My only reservation at this point was the "small" serving of pepper sauce on the side. Maybe that's because I like to drown my food normally. However what it lacked in volume it made up for in taste. The food was beautiful. Tender tasty steak combined with the rich sauce and smooth potato. I was in food heaven. Despite eating what felt like the biggest piece of meat ever, there is always room for dessert and I opted for the deconstructed cheesecake. I have a bit of a annoyance towards pretentious styling (just give me a piece of cheesecake!), however this didn't seem to be one or the other. It was just a bowl with biscuit on the bottom and a sort of mousse on the top. Tasted fantastic, but not sure I would call it deconstructed in anyway now! The owner, who I had chatted to previously, then brought us over some complimentary Baileys, to welcome us there for our first visit. Is it pricey? Yes perhaps but you'll always pay more for good steak. Would I go again? Yes. Would I consider it in the top 3 in Dublin? Great meal for our anniversary. We were in their old premises ages ago, but their new site across the road is bigger and even nicer. Tofu for wife, steak for me - cooked to perfection. After failing to get a good steak in paris recently, this more than made up for it (with obligatory Bearnaise sauce). After several years of constantly walking by Darwin's (in both locations!) I was finally able to eat here recently... The owner greeted us as we sat down and explained that as a vegetarian herself, she looks after that side of things...while her husband, a butcher, looks after the meat side... She walked us through several selections and we all ended up going for the rib-eye steak, which she highly recommended...she was spot on as it was about the best piece of meat I've eaten in Dublin... A bit pricey, but certainly worth a "splurge" when you merit one...great service and atmosphere. And I did check out the toilets as I was too curious after reading about them here...and yes, they are as great as advertised. read more

We went there with a group of around 20 - 25 people. They have an extra room at the very end which was lovely as you don't disturb other guests with a naturally lively group. But other than that I was disappointed that evening (first time and so far only time there). It was mainly due to the staff that night. From the set up I thought they are used to groups and ok with them, but there were a few occasions at our table where I felt they didn't really want us there or we weren't "good enough". It was with a camera club, so everyone rather in the age of 30 - 60. The food was good but not outstanding - having said that being a bit tense due to the staff might have biased my opinion. Four girls in need of a catch up over some vino took themselves to Darwins for a mid week treat and to avail of the early bird menu. 22e for 2 courses (including 2 types of steak)- hard to argue with that! As we were dining early evening (6pm) it was not overly busy but did pick up as the night progressed. Service was the right side of being very attentive - a fine line between that and overbearing! We decided to each avail of the 2 course offer and to split starters and desserts. So in total, we had 2 asparagus and broad bean risottos to start, main were comprised of 3 ribeye medium rare steaks and 1 new York strip loin, we also ordered 2 sides of almond and chilli stem broccoli and desserts of white and milk chocolate brownie and 1 rhubarb crumble. We complemented these dishes with 2 botttles of a Californian red, the provocatively named "melange a trios!" The result: The risotto was fresh, light to taste and very comforting- heartily recommended. Really tender (and large!) steaks, cooked perfectly to order. Deliciously moreish al dente broccoli and mashed potato were an exquisite accompaniment. Desserts were delicious, in particular the brownie and the "melange a trois" went down a treat! Being a scientist, it's hard not to love Darwin's just for its name. In fact, I celebrated Charles Darwin's 200th birthday there this year! I am a big fan of the restaurant and have never had a bad meal here. The only reason I haven't given a full five stars is that one time (on 4+ visits now) my steak was slightly sub par, but not so much that I bothered to complain, and on another occasion, the service was slightly less than attentive. Most recently I had a divine experience with the Antipasto Plate For 2 (I have no idea what that pate was, but it was darn tasty!), a perfectly medium rare 11 Oz Premium Eye Fillet, ever so tender, with Béarnaise sauce, followed by the selection of ice creams. I'm practically drooling just thinking about it! If I could remember the wine selection, I would rave about that as well. The only reason I don't eat here more often is the cost. It's pricey enough to be saved for special occasions or gastronomic therapy sessions. read more

The last night of our holiday in Ireland, we were lucky enough that someone cancelled their reservation so they could fit our large group (8). Unfortunately, the service was SO SLOW we were there for 2.5 hours and not by our choice. The waiter came up and asked for our order without giving any of the specials or telling us the soup. Which was even more weird because the menu referenced a "fish of the day" and a "pasta of the day". I got the fish of the day (John dory) and it smelled so fishy it bothered everyone at the table. It tasted just as bad as it smelled. Everyone else was happy with their dishes but still thought it was overpriced. We ordered dessert and Irish coffee and it took 30 minutes then another 10 and a reminder to get the coffee. I would not recommend this restaurant. It's expensive and the service is bad. For this expensive of a meal I expect an above average meal and excellent service. Disappointed all around. read more

I visited here with friends on Saturday evening for the early bird menu. It's my first time and won't be my last. Firstly it is fantastic value at €23.50 for three courses including sirloin steak. The space inside is well decorated and feels comfortable, and the service is welcoming and very friendly. I had the risotto to start and it was excellent, followed by the bouillabaisse. I really enjoyed this; it had plenty of plump prawns and other fish. When we finished our meal, coffee etc. it was getting close to the time for the later diners (the early bird runs to 6pm on a Saturday), but the owner kindly offered us seats outside. As it was a nice evening we took up this offer and were comped a round of drinks. This is my book was a fantastic touch in a world where pack 'em in and get 'em out can prevail. Everything was spot on perfect: the service was quick, the servers kind and gregarious, and the ambiance was charming. The older-looking decor suited the place. It felt comfortable, yet elegant. I ordered the black pudding risotto, a pint of cider, and a rhubarb dessert. Everything was delicious, flavourful, correctly portioned, and well-priced. ...It's been difficult here in Dublin, with my iPhone not being compatible, so making reservations to most places has been impossible. But the staff were extremely accomodating - even more so in that it was just me. The servers are very down-to-earth to match the owners (who were very sure to ckeck in at every table). The foie gras starter was buttery and smooth and the 8 oz. fillet was tender and perfectly prepared. I also highly recommend (thanks to my server Siobhán) the Rhubarb foil which was light and refreshing for a dessert and didn't leave me feeling ridiculously full. Coming from Minneapolis, I didn't find the pricing to be out-of-line with the fare offered and found the overall checque to be very reasonable (in spite of the price range indicator on this site). While I didn't happen to see any children in the place Monday evening, the very friendly asmosphere would indicate that it's not so uppity that relatvely well-behaved kids wouldn't be welcome! Though the space is relatively small so running about wouldn't be a good thing... Looking forward to going back soon! read more

Location, interior and cleanliness is great. But the star of the show is the food. The flavors were exceptional. We were a group of 7 and we ordered a variety of food. We were able taste quite a few dishes and they were DELICIOUS!!!!! I am definitely going back. And let's not forget the service. 5 stars may seem a tad generous but when you compare price versus the quality of food, i do think it is justified My group availed of the pre theatre menu which is available all night on Mondays and Tuesdays, 3 courses for €29 with the option to add a supplement for fillet steak..... I ordered calamari for starters, fillet steak with peppercorn sauce for main and brownie for desert. You can't really go wrong with a chocolate brownie so i guess it wasn't mind blowing but it tasted good.... As for the starter and main.... Ueber impressed!!!! the calamari was delicately cooked and in my opinion, was complimented well by the salad and sauce. The fillet steak was cooked to perfection with a delicious peppercorn sauce and portion of vegetables on the side. We were happy with that, but they never once came to ask us to leave even when we overstayed. We were offered a glass of wine extra as we left.
