Happened upon this while coming back from parade. We were looking for a nice place to eat away from the crazy pub scenes. Was not disappointed. First time visit. Went with spouse. I had lamb. I recommend it. We Loved the mashed potatoes, We ordered seconds. My spouse ordered The dry age stake: it was disappointing; what we paid for it should have been the sign of was coming. I personally loved the mushrooms, large serving and very tasty. The yelp wine has a good kick to it, don't miss out on it. Service and scneary it what elevates this place. It seems popular too. Unless you're into ultra rustic cooked meat; I recommend you try their other stake options and stay away from the dry age cut. The chef might had a bad night when we went, so I won't dismiss this place since everything else ranged from good to excellent! read more

By far the best meal I had during my week in Dublin. The staff and service were genuine, timely and friendly. The co-owner Dolores was absolutely charming, and a true of reflection of what a passionate restaurateur is all about. I had the rib eye off bone, which was perfectly cooked medium, a delightful salad and perfect mash. The Rhubarb Fool desert was one of the most memorable desserts I've ever had- tart, light, and full of texture. Would come back here next time I'm in Dublin in a heartbeat. read more

We stopped in here on our last night in Dublin. We're both vegetarians and the offerings here are hands down some of the best vegetarian meals we've had. Wow! This place is great. To us, it seemed quite pricy at first but for the quality of food and service, it was worth it! I was a bit self conscious while eating there, knowing full well that my husband and I hadn't paid much attention to the price of the food before agreeing to be seated, and although I ordered relatively small, they treated us just as exquisitely as the next table. The asparagus, pea, and toasted almond soup could not be rivaled and my husband's medium rare ribeye was huge and cooked to perfection. The risotto and ice cream were delicious as well. Decent steakhouse, nothing special, overpriced for its quality even for a European city. Granted, I live in Texas, so I'm probably spoiled. Modern, brightly lit facade contrasts with cozy if slightly dated interior. Service was friendly and prompt. Started with a buffalo mozzarella and tomato salad with excellent flavor, particularly the tomatoes. Ordered a bone-in ribeye--it's what I wanted, and the waiter said it was probably their best steak with very good marbling. Though the steak was cooked to the correct temperature, it was underseasoned and had a mealier texture than many ribeyes I've had, making me wonder about the quality of the beef. The red wine jus was delicious and made eating the steak worth my while. The mashed potatoes were dreadfully dry, even powdery--to the point where I wouldn't be surprised if they were instant. Skipped dessert. So, just OK. There has to be better steak in Dublin. read more

Been to Darwin's 3 or 4 times in the past 6 months following recommendations from friends and have thoroughly enjoyed it each time. I've sampled the New York strip loin, ribeye and fillet steaks and they've been absolutely delicious without exception. An unnamed Yelp pal has been quite pissy about Darwin's general standards falling recently but I haven't been disappointed with the food or service at all. Quite the opposite in fact. I'm actually very fond of the waiter who looks like a young version of the actor Seán McGinley, the man who's played bit part roles in every Irish film ever made. I usually have a grand chat about gaelic football or soccer with him (the waiter, not Seán McGinley). So Darwin's is a place to go if you want tasty and perfectly cooked meat but that's not to say the sides and desserts aren't excellent too. No complaints with the décor or atmosphere either and Darwin's also has a very reasonable early bird offer if you're knocking around town, well, earlier in the evening. Otherwise, it can be a little pricey when you add in starters and wine but it's acceptable given the quality of the food and the dining experience. My only quibble with the place was that our umbrellas were robbed from the bucket in the porch during the torrential rain last Saturday night. We improvised by robbing another couple of umbrellas as we left, presumably owned by those still dining. I retrospectively apologise for any inconvenience caused and I've been overcome by guilt ever since but I respectfully suggest that Darwin's hires somebody to guard the umbrella bucket or moves it to another location inside the restaurant. I've said too much. Overall, I'd strongly recommend Darwin's. read more

Great steaks, overall menu and prices are quite reasonable. On busy evenings service can be poor and they regularly run out of some side dishes or simple things like mashed potatoe. Again, on busy evenings, steaks tend to be a little underdone. Pity, because the restaurant has all the raw materials for top marks. read more

Paleolithic diet? Every now and then cavemen hit the jackpot for a meat feast day. Those are the days they came to Darwins. Himself is a butcher, taking care of the meat side of the menu. Herself and the daughter are vegetarian, taking care of the rest. The steaks are generous; done simply with traditional accompaniments. I bet they have regulars, who come back routinely for honest food served with a smile. That service is striking. It is almost paternal; always sweet. What a relief not to be chased from a city centre premises after 1.5 hours? Here, they expect you'll want 2.5 hours to enjoy the meal. As it should be. It's not modern. It's not very hip (whatever that means). It's just very enjoyable. read more

Darwin's menu offers great choices from great steaks to fishes. A must experience when visiting Dublin. I had a very good quality rib eye on the bone that was cooked to perfection. What I love about Dublin now is the selection of restaurants and the quality of service and selection and Darwin's is a place to visit. read more

Terribly fond of Darwins. Great steak, love the seafood mixed grill and the sides are great too. Smashing atmosphere and I like the layout too. Would definitely plump for the late sitting as the staff seem to spoil you a bit more then. They're very good to anyone they recognise. read more

Dublin I am impressed you have some great restaurants here! This is yet another in the succession of fantastic places I've visited here so far! We had a group of seven and were probably a bit noisier and rowdier than we should have been, but the staff were great! Good service aside the food; most specifically the meat was divine here! The decor and friendly staff were terrific. They squeezed us in with no reservation, but warned us they needed the table back in 1:45, which was fine with us. The service was a bit slow, so we needed the whole time, but had a lovely dinner - the rib-eye, lamb trio, and pasta special all got raves for the group, as did the Rioja. read more

Boyfriend and I came here for an early bird. The food was fantastic. My risotto was light and fresh and the calamari was delicious. We both had the rib eye steak which were delicious, very tender and tasty, and very big! A special mention needs to be made of the staff who were so welcoming and friendly without being intrusive. Best steak in Dublin, by far. Darwins uses beef selected and cut at their own butcher shop so you know you're getting steak selected by experts. The beef is tender, flavorful and well-prepared. There are plenty of delicious-sounding options on the menu, though I haven't tried anything other than the steak. This is a pricey meal, but one worth every cent if you enjoy steak. The decor is warm and welcoming while still feeling modern and stylish. In short, I have no complaints! read more

Got a very poor steak. Marbled does not mean more fat than actual steak. Bottom line is I love steak and was hungry but just didn't enjoy the steak I got and could hardly find a piece that was enjoyable. Sides were very average. Darwins own butchers shop supplies certified organic meats to this restaurant in an area known for its butchers but not, until recently, so much as a dining destination. Darwins offers discerning diners flavoursome cooking that pleases the eye as much as the taste buds and makes the most of well-sourced ingredients, including good vegetables and delicious fish. You can expect excellent meats - especially great steaks - but ivegetarians are also well looked after, and one of the house specialities is a vegetarian risotto of wild mushrooms and sun-dried tomato. Desserts are a little expensive and leave a lot to be desired, so I would advise sticking to main courses. The wine list has become a little pricey of late (hence the loss of a star) but this restaurant was the background for the beginning of a great romance and its decor is so warm and cosy and cavemanish(you'll understand what i mean if you go) and the staff so lovely that i really hope it doesn't become victim to the recession. read more

Best meal I had in Dublin! My family and I were visiting from the states when we stumbled upon this restaurant. The staff was lovely, sat us right away regardless of not having a reservation, and the manager (Helen) talked with us extensively. The decor, staff, and environment were all equally welcoming. Not to mention, the steak I had was melt-in-your-mouth tender and delicious. I highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Dublin, especially for those who (like my cousin) are looking for more vegetarian friendly options. read more

Nothing fancy or extraordinary, but the place was nice and the food was good. I even went back to ask for the brand of a Proseco Rosé we were served and they gave me the info without a fuzz. The food in Darwins never ceases to amaze me. The steak ( I must admit I'm unrepentant carnivore) is to die for. I had my medium and it was cooked to perfection, chased down with a nice glass or two of red wine. When you find you want to linger a bit longer than usual after your meal, it's usually a very good sign. I look forward to my next dining experience in Darwins. read more

From the outset, doing business with Darwins was an absolute pleasure. The owners are such lovely people and made our group of ~25 people (most coming from afar from Canada) feel so welcome! I rented their private room for my cousin's hen do and it went off without a hitch - truly no complaints whatsoever. The fillet was one of the best steaks I've ever had, there is a nice little bar in the private room, and they even decorated the room for us with balloons that matched the hen do theme (a huge load off of my plate as Maid of Honour!) The service was prompt and professional, and everyone had a fantastic time. This is a must-visit restaurant and I will certainly be back next time I am in Dublin! Thank you Darwins! read more

We (3 people) were looking for a restaurant with good steaks and we've found the Darwins. Unfortunately, it was crowed when we stepped in without reservation. The manager was very friendly, but she told us that they were completely booked out. After we told her that we were coming all the way from Italy she tried everything to get us seated. After a while she managed to find a table for us and we were happy about her gentle efforts. The steaks were excellent, perfectly cooked and the service was fast and very friendly. We had a wonderful evening and really appreciated that they managed to get us seated. Nevertheless, I would recommend to make a reservation. read more

I absolutely love Darwins! Their meat dishes are cooked to absolute perfection and in addition they have a great selection of vegetarian dishes, something which is still quite unusual in Dublin. The owners and the staff sre incredible friendly and the service of very high quality. All dishes are very affordable and there is a superb pre theatre menu which offers great value for money. To sum it up, you can be sure to have an excellent dining experience and I really recommend paying Darwins a visit. read more

To be honest a great disappointment. Chewy dry meat . I can do much better at home. The french Malbec classified as powerful red was medium bodied at best. The Barolo was ok...but not more. Can not understand the ratings. Service is ok. read more
