First, I have to apologize for the awful photos. I'm not sure if it was the lighting or user error, but I could not take a good photo in this beautiful venue. We were referred to Shanahan's by American friends. This is a classic American steakhouse, and had I realized that, I would have chosen a more authentically Irish restaurant. The meal and service were fantastic, but I'm not sure this would rank in my top steakhouse experiences. Our steak was not cooked medium rare - it was almost medium well. While everything was delicious, nothing stood out as unique other than the bread. That being said, a similar experience in the states would cost two times as much (think Morton's or Jeff Ruby's). The bread was fantastic, as were the scallops. As a southern American, the creamed corn was fantastic and as authentic as I've had anywhere (including the south). Our servers were incredibly attentive and the venue was beautiful. If you're from the USA... I'd pass and leave the experience to European tourists who want the American steakhouse experience. No complaints, just not what we typically look for when traveling international (which is entirely our fault). This is a very post place and reservations are a must. read more

The restaurant was beautiful and the hostesses were kind when greeting me and finding me a table (I did not have a reservation). The bread was Delicious! I could have ate that alone. This steakhouse reminds me of a Ruth Chris in the states. All steaks are ala carte and cooked perfectly. I got a half portion of truffle fries and it was definitely large enough for 2 people at minimum. Upon receiving my bill they gave me three chocolates which was a great treat. The only reason I didn't rate this higher is the wait service seemed to ignore me after I ordered and only till I asked for the check. The restaurant was busy with large parties and their attentiveness with them did look like if it was slower or I had a larger party I would get the same. read more

Well, what can I say? We spent 3 days in Dublin and 2-1/2 weeks in France. Shanahan's on The Green served us our best meal!! We came to Ireland to celebrate our 20th anniversary and chose to dine here that evening for our celebration. When I made my reservation, I asked for a romantic table. I was happy we were placed in a smaller room and by the window. At the end of our meal, they gave us Prosecco and sweets for a toast to celebrate. The restaurant is set in an elegant older home and makes you feel at home when here. Friendly staff greets you at the door and the service was excellent. They gave us a sweet treat at the end of the meal and the hostess indulged is with taking our photo. To begin, they send out warm fresh bread. My filet was tender and delicious. I loved how the potatoes showed up in a copper pot for sharing. This is a great place for a romantic celebration dinner. read more

Easily the most perfectly cooked steak I've ever had. Our meal was amazing. I don't love the ambiance of the place, though, it was quite bright and overall didn't feel very cozy or warm. Our server took a long time to do most anything. We waited 20 minutes to pay for our meal, which was frustrating because we were told they needed the table ready for a party by 8:30 and we're trying to be respectful of that. Shanahan Restaurant oozes opulence even before you step into the place. Housed in a 250 year old townhouse overlooking St. Stephen's Green, one can tell that this place is reserved for that special occasion, that place where you want her to say "yes", or that expense account dinner where you want to blow off some steam and some Euros. The first thing when you approach the building is the huge floral arrangement in the window. Continue upstairs, and that's where the main dining room is. Shanahan is an American steakhouse, complimented with local Irish ingredients. All beef is hand selected angus, with a combo of dry and wet aging. Each steak is from the best six bone rib section of the steer. What I find interesting is they can trace each cut back to the particular animal and herd's family tree. Now that's quality control. Although my steak was cooked a bit much for rare, the quality of the beef still showed thru. If you want to throw back a few pints, the "Oval Office" is the name of the bar. As the name suggests, it is decorated with US presidential artifacts...remember, this is an American place. Bring that diamond ring or bring that contract that needs to be signed. But most important, bring that credit card...it will get a workout. read more

For our last night of a three week vacation and 21st Wedding Anniversary, I wanted to take my wife somewhere really special for dinner in Dublin. Our friend and neighbor in CA referred us to Shanahan's on the Green in Dublin. We asked two tour guides and they both concurred Shanahan's was the best in Dublin. They were all right and we were in for the treat of the entire vacation! We even met Mr. Shanahan himself and he invited us to the bar down stairs to taste some Shanahan's single malt Irish Whiskey and it was fantastic! He is a character, fun and full of energy. You can see why his staff is "Top Notch" once you've met the Man in Charge! Upstairs for fine wine, garlic shrimp, filet mignon and sole! Very nice New York-style steakhouse in Dublin. It was recommended by some locals, so I didn't know what to expect. I arrived early and was asked if I wanted to go to my table or be seated in the bar while I waited. I went to the bar, the "Oval Office," which is on the lower floor and is an American president-themed place with big comfy chairs and memorabilia on the walls. I had a whisky (Irish, of course) while waiting and it came with a little cup of bar snacks that were pretty tasty. As an aside, the Irish make some pretty amazing gins as well. If you have the opportunity to check out Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin, I suggest you give it a go with a bit of Fever Tree tonic water and some ice. Now, back to our regularly scheduled program: Once the rest of my group arrived, we were seated and ordered our dinners. The room we were seated in was upstairs and consisted of a number of linen tablecloth-covered tables in a room with a fancy chandelier, a fire place, nice cream-colored moulding and burgundy carpeting (I seem to remember al of that -- it was kind of overwhelming after a long week of meetings and presentations) The (cheese and onion?) bread they serve while you wait for the entrees is phenomenal. I never expected to encounter corn muffins with chilis in them in Ireland, much less that they would be perfect. I could have carbo-loaded on those all night! We had to split the two that came with the bread and then asked for another two so that we could prove that it wasn't a dream :D The steaks were thick and all were cooked as requested. Frankly, I have had better steaks, but there was nothing wrong with this one. I tend to prefer my steaks with a little more seasoning applied before cooking, but I respect their choice to serve the piece of beef naked and allow the consumer to season as desired. I ordered the 18oz (boneless) New York strip because, after all, I was at a *New York-style* steakhouse! I ate the whole thing, so you can imagine that it must have been really terrible. The steaks are served with caramelized onions and steak jus. We had creamed spinach and hash browns as our side. The spinach was OK, but the hash browns were really good. We commented that it was kind of a simple offering at such a fancy place, but they were really executed well and disappeared much faster than the spinach. read more

Hard to fault this restaurant on Saint Stephens Green. I came for the first time on a recent trip. It feels like Luxury as soon as you walk in. You get escorted to the downstairs bar which has great cocktails. Then for the main event I got the fillet steak. Was top notch and it comes with incredible sides. These sides are so huge that you could never finish by yourself. That makes it great value. The dessert was literally the best cheesecake I have ever had. It's the Oreo cheesecake, and it was incredibly soft and smooth. Again huge portion to share. This is great spot for a special occasion. Definitely coming back. read more

I've been to a lot of steak restaurants in my time and I think this is the best one I've been to. The service was impeccable and the steak (and lamb) were delicious. The prices make this a special occasion type of place but it is worth it. The wine selection is top notch, we ended up having an Argentinian Malbec, which turned out to be a good choice based on the meals we decided to order. Highly recommend it if you're having steak. The dessert menu was very impressive also and we all enjoyed the ice cream and chocolate (I know it sounds boring but trust me, they do something special here). You'll come out spending at least €60-70 a person if you order wine and have dessert so be warned. Personally I'd be willing to starve myself for a week if it meant I could eat here frequently. Shanahan's on the green has a very knowledgeable and friendly bar staff - they offer a Shanahan's single malt sourced from Cooley distillery which has since been bought by Teeling distillery. I also received excellent recommendations for whiskey hunting in Dublin. For the main course, I ordered the rib-in bone eye and added the duck foie gras (which is offered with their filet mignon) with a side of the tomatoe salad. Everything melted like butter in the mouth and was delectable. Perfectly cooked to medium rare. An excellent experience if you are willing to drop over 100 euro per person. read more

I left feeling like I should have been rolled out. The wine list is extensive but personally it lacks some niche offerings at better prices that you might see in places like Chapter One. The salmon trio starter was OK. It was simply smoked salmon on a pancake. The bread they serve is outstanding so it's a balance. The steak was cooked to perfection and served with enough sides to feed a hungry family. Desert was light and vert tasty but my Americano had reached temperature to be found on the sun. Came here for my birthday meal. We chose a glass of Sancerre each. For starters I had the Caesar Salad. Huge portion size. Lovely dressing. They brought out a bread basket which included a cornbread and chilli muffin and a cheese and onion bread. Soooo moreish!! For my main course I chose the petit filet steak which was cooked to perfection. The mains came with a giant portion of crispy onion strings, creamed spinach and potato. For dessert I went for cookies and cream cheesecake. So so good! The staff are exceptional. We ate in the dining room on the ground floor. It's a beautiful. I have walked by Shanahan's nearly every day for 15 years and I have always dreamed of eating here. Shanahan's is stunning, we had a window seat overlooking the Green which was perfect for people watching. The staff were professional, not friendly or engaging which was disappointing. The wine list is extensive! We ordered a bottle of the Single Valley Lot Grand reserva red wine. We started with delicious bread and muffin, scallops for starters and I ordered the pork shank after spying some guest's order. The pork shank was intimidating, I couldn't finish my main or my half of the side fries ordered. I was disappointed with the deconstructed apple tart wasn't great, the filo pastry was too crunchy. I had a great experience at Shanahan's. We went there for a special occasion and we couldn't expect better service, we booked in advance and we were welcomed by their friendly staff. We had some drinks in their Oval Bar, which is decorated with photos of the American president's with Irish ancestry. For starter I had the Duck confit and my parter the salmon trio, for the main we both had a succulent T-bone steak that I will never forget the taste, so far the best steak that I ever tried in Dublin. As mentioned many times here, this is a very pricey spot, and it's true. I don't mind paying up for awesome food, but my steak was just ok. I got the New York strip, and the medium rare was a bit over cooked for my taste. It also didn't have the nice sear I like, and overall it was on the dry side. Now the spinach salad with warm bacon dressing was amazing! Don't be fooled into thinking this is a healthy option, as it's slathered with dressing and generous portions of crisp bacon. It's American-style bacon, and maybe the best I've ever had. The ambiance is traditional and kind of boring. Service was professional though not necessarily friendly. It seemed a minor offense not to order any sides. So besides the really high prices, it's not a good sign when the best food at a steak place is a salad. read more

I proposed to my girlfriend (now fiancee, she said yes!) in Shanahans recently and they did a wonderful job of keeping it a surprise and making sure it was the perfect night. For example, the staff ensured that (as requested) we got a window table overlooking the green. While we waited for that table to become available (10 minutes or so) we were shown to a reserved table in the very comfortable Oval Bar for drinks and to peruse the menu. Once upstairs, following an excellent meal they served us complimentary champagne and a congratulations plate - very tastefully done and until I popped the question my girlfriend had no idea what was going on. The meal itself was exactly what you would expect given the reputation of Shanahans - the filet mignon was perfectly prepared (medium rare), flavourful and the hash browns as a side were very, very good. Having been to Mortons, Ray's the Steaks and other top steak houses in the US, I would put the Shanahans steak on par with anything I had there, though at a significant price premium (not unusual in Ireland, sadly). For wine I tried a 2006 Amarone based on the recommendation of our waiter and it was extremely good. You certainly pay a premium in Shanahans, making it very much a "special occasion" (or business dinner) destination, but you get what you pay for in terms of both service, ambience and food - well deserving of their reputation. I had been to Shanahans before many years ago and came away with the same impression - this only confirmed it. read more

It's lovely to have someone more fluent in the workings of food order for you. On our posh white linen table the following stared seductively back at us; a big slab of medium well steak. A hill of onion rings. A huge saucer of a hash-brown. A rich mess of creamed spinach in a fancy bowl. Of course it had to washed down by a divine red wine. Of course we had to heap on the gluttony with desert, something peanut butter based... There's a shock a gal from the States opting for peanut butter ;) I like to be called madam. I especially like to be called madam when I am under-dressed for a fancy place like that. The interior is opulent like how dining in the early 20th century was, except now thankfully deodorant exists. We mulled over our food and wine for what felt like several hours, in hindsight that is. In the moment, the ambiance contributed to the great dinner talk. Afterwards we went downstairs into the Oval Office where JFK's rocking chair rests behind the bar as well as other artifacts from US presidents, cementing the Irish fascination with American politics. Call me lacking substance, but it's a lifestyle to aspire towards. There is something hypnotic about luxury that makes you stand that bit taller. Plus I like being called Madam, I have paid my dues by cleaning too many toilets in my past life. read more

When I first ate here 15 or so years ago, it was the best steak I'd ever had. The meat was still beautiful, and beautifully prepared, but the memory didn't hold up--especially to the NYC heavies like Wolfgang's and Peter Lugers. Also, they serve your steak bathed in a very flavorful Au jus, that, in my opinion obscures the flavor of the meat almost completely. If you like a beefy flavor--and it's wonderful Irish Angus--ask for the jus on the side. Service was excellent, though they tried to seat me next to the servers' station even though the restaurant was empty, and then were a little pissy when I asked to move. I fully forgave them when they brought out a lovely complementary chocolate plate for my birthday. The wine list is pretty decent, and you can do OK for 50 Euros, but the markup is intense. I can't remember what exactly they charge for an Altos Malbec, which is about US $11, but I do remember my eyes almost falling out of my head. This place is expensive in general, but they do their best to add value via ambience and classic French service. Don't miss the Oval Office bar downstairs. For a friend's farewell dinner, we headed to Shanahan's after another friend said it was the best place in Dublin for steaks. I'm not much of a steak fan, but I will say that this place rocked my socks. We started the night off downstairs with a few glasses of wine while gazing at JFK's rocking chair. The waiters also provided warm peanuts which were crunchy yet melted in your mouth. Being near JFK's chair set the tone for the entire night. The ambience throughout was elegant and made us feel classy and sophisticated (dressing up probably helped a bit too). For dinner, we had a few filet mignons and t-bones between everyone in the group. I ordered my filet mignon medium well and it was exceptional. The steak was perfectly cooked and was flavorful, and the sauce wasn't overpowering, but more of a complement. The sides of onion rings, mashed potatoes, and creamy spinach were all amazing as well. When it came time for dessert, we were all stuffed, but wanted to taste more. Another friend and I shared the cheesecake, which was light and puffy. Every garnishment, from the cream to the wall of thin chocolate enhanced the flavor of the cheesecake when it was in your mouth. It was probably the most unique cheesecake I've had in my life since they're usually rich and very heavy. I could go on forever, but I think I'll close by saying that eating here was like being a celebrity (from the service to the food) and I can only hope that they eat this well. read more

I've been fortunate enough to have been in Shanahan's on at least 4 occasions. Now being a student i could obviously not have afforded this, luckily they were family soiree's and my wallet never witnessed the smooth ambience of this revered restaurant. Pressing on, Shanahan's is a wonderful eatery, make no mistake about that. The food is fabulous and if you're a meat eater you really have to try the steak which is what Shanahan's pride themselves on. They offer a range of cuts and sizes and trust me, the petit fillet will be quite enough, it's quite voluminous. Fret not vegetarians/non steak lovers, the menu is extensive and you shouldn't have a problem choosing, just be careful you don't neglect your main dish and load up on the sumptuous sides that Shanahan's offer, namely the shoe string potatoes (posh chips) or the mash which is luscious to say the least. If you manage to brave this storm and make it this far, you're doing well. Desert? I think so. I'm not sure if it's still on the menu, but I had an oreo cheesecake that was honestly one of the best things I'd ever eaten. So good that I asked if I could have a box to bring it home in, not being able to conquer it, i'd met my Waterloo as the saying goes. The dining room is elegant with both an upstairs and downstairs. Given the fact that it's located in such an old (refurbished) building, the ceilings are high and it never gets uncomfortably muggy like it does it other established eateries. The lighting is warm and at just the right setting for eating. Why not cap the night off or even start it off with a neat drink in the basement level bar. While you sip your aperitif have a good long look at the rocking chair behind the bar, a chair that belonged to none other than JFK. The decor of the basement bar is decadent, big green leather riveted bucket seats take their place next to varnished mahogany tables. There's also the odd star spangled banner draped here and there in a tribute to the great president. There is no doubt that this is one of the most prestigious restaurants in the city centre and unlike so many others is still operating after the dour economic battering this country has taken over the last 5 years. However, a word of warning as alluded to in the opening paragraph, bring your gold American Express card, you're going to need it. read more

Initial reaction to this place was that it would be stuffy and packed to the rafters with over 50s. The clientele is refined certainly, tackies probably not advisable footwear. Stuffy it was not, just stoic and grand. The oval bar downstairs and sprawling restaurant throughout this stunning building was staffed appropriately to cater for the diner's every need. I will never eat a nut without roasting it first. The nutty flavours abounded throughout my mouth. Sensational. The menu and wine list are both expensive but worth it for that special occasion. To start I had the scallops, minus the bacon lardons. The veloute sauce was enough even for carnivores. Chile muffin crumbled in my mouth. Queue the mains, the steak opposite looked great, judging from the person's lack of being able to speak I guess the appearance was matched in flavour. The halibut was delicious although i've never been crazy about white asparagus. Prosecco was comped along with some chocolates as it was belated birthday celebration. I feel like three stars is a little tough - it could be 3.5, but at €300 for 2 people I think it needs to be outstanding. Here's the set-up: mid-20th-century American style steakhouse - think Don Draper. Armchairs to sit in. Some kind of 1800 degree broiler thing to cook the steaks. Big portions. Extensive wine list filled with good wines. Exquisite Georgian interior. It's very very good. Impeccable service that didn't make you feel overwhelmed. The downsides, such as they are: There's too much g-d food. Sure, there's a petit fillet at €2 less than the larger one. Everything else on the menu tops 400g, with several above 500 (or even 600). If I went again I'd hang the expense and make them split one of the steaks. You can't eat 500g of meat in the time it takes for it to go cold. The wine list is confusing. Some of it is by region, some by grape, and there are things in one that aren't in the other, and it's not laid out in any sensible fashion. My wife and I had to go back and forth to find something that worked. The armchairs aren't actually that comfortable, and seat you back so that it's difficult to eat. On the upside, the selection of by-the-glass wines was very, very good - Ireland doesn't have the widest selection of trade wines at the best of times, although several of them top €20/bottle. It was a great meal and one I'm very glad I had, but I don't think I'd be back. Some people might like it, but we wanted to send the balance of our steaks to Calais. read more

Been here several times before but not for many years since my expense account was sadly terminated by the recession. Needless to say, I wasn't on my own dime here this time. Large group assembled in the splendid Oval Office downstairs (it's neither Oval nor an office but has JFKs rocking chair so that's why!) for pre-dinner cocktails. My new tipple of Hendricks gin and tonic with a twist of cucumber was perfectly mixed and went down a treat. Upstairs for the main event. As usual, steaks were the order of the evening preceded, in my case, by scallops with chorizo which was tasty enough but very insubstantial it has to be said. The bread was simply sublime and, as I've observed before, a restaurant can often be judged on the quality of it's bread. Delicious and moreish. Steaks the size of small children cooked to perfection were then served with lashings of fries, mountains of speciality onion strings, mash, spinach etc etc. The chosen red for the evening was a very potable Cabarnet Sauvignon which was also excellent. I passed on dessert and, judging by the portion sizes of the cheese cake, in particular, it was just as well as me waddling down Stephens Green in search of a taxi is not a good look. A most enjoyable evening, great food and great company in a lovely setting. I'm only glad I wasn't paying as I could see our host blanch when presented with the bill. It's all about the experience here, and what an experience it is! The place oozes opulence and the staff really are something else, I couldn't fault the service here at all. The warm cheesy bread and chive muffins at the beginning are a really nice touch and get your tastebuds working nicely. I had the Petite Filet and it was really nice but to be honest, for the price, I was expecting it to be something special. It was a really nice piece of meat but I've had steaks just as nice for half the price. We shared a selection of sides and they were all really good but the creamed corn deserves a special mention. We were all quite full after the mains so shared a couple of the cheesecakes (which are ginormous) and again, they were nice but nothing special. I would return again simply for the first class service here but in terms of really good steak, there are plenty of places in Dublin you can get a meal that's just as tasty for half the price! read more

Dinner at Shanahan's was one of the best meals we had in Ireland. Great filet, solid sides and decent desserts. The early prix fixe menu is a great option at 50 euro/pp. Service was a cut above the traditional European service. We ate upstairs which was you'd expect for any well-rated "American steakhouse" in Dublin from an atmosphere standpoint, but in hindsight the money call was eating in the Oval Office (the bar downstairs). The Oval Office is where Shanahan's "history" is. "History" is an odd word to use for a restaurant that's opened in the last 15 years , but it's where all the presidential photos are, the interesting bartenders and of course, Kennedy's Rocking Chair. RE: Price.....It's simple. Shanahan's is expensive. If you come, expect to spend a ton of cash relative to other meals you could eat at nice restaurants in Dublin. If that doesn't make sense or you can't expense it, don't do it. read more

I wasn't sure exactly what to expect and thought it may be quite stuck up and leave us feeling uncomfortable but we were at ease straight away. We had a lovely seat overlooking the green and found it very relaxed. Firstly we were given a board and a loaf of bread and muffin. The bread was (I think) onion, rosemary and cheddar cheese. It was still hot and the cheese was melting as we cut it. The chive muffin was v tasty too. Menu choice isn't massive but definitely suited us - we were never going to get anything other than steak anyway! To start we got the Trio of Irish Salmon: Oak Smoked, House Cured and Pastrami which came with Blini (pretty much a pancake), Créme Fraíche and Caviar & the Roasted Red Pepper soup. Both got the thumbs up. We both had the petit filet. Both were cooked perfectly and were so tasty and juicy. They came with sides of spinach, mash and onion rings. For dessert we had the Cookies and Cream cheesecake, topped with a nice Oreo and I decided to go for something I've never had and chose the Crème Brulee. It could have been a slight bit more crispy on top but was really, really lovely ... but I just wanted the frickin cheesecake :-( Total bill for 2 EB'S, a bottle of water(€6.50) and a bottle of Marlborough (€44 was €140.50.. reasonable enough for the quality food we got. read more

Just had dinner there this evening and thought it was great. Wanted to treat myself to a nice dinner on my last night in Dublin, and felt like this was a good choice. I had the Butternut Squash Soup as a starter and it was pretty good. I went for the petite fillet as my entree. Delicious. I asked for medium rare and it was a tad closer to rare. That suited me fine though. Had the Black and White Fondant for dessert. Fab! The one (and slight as such) issue was that I felt abut put off being a single diner. It seemed like the serving staff wasn't used to that. The feeling did change when I stepped down to the bar and met the ladies there. They were very nice and allowed me behind the ber to take a quick photo with Kennedy's chair. All in all, a good experience. Very enjoyable. read more

Shanahan's on the Green is one of the absolute best steak-houses I have ever had the privilege of eating at. The atmosphere, wait staff, food, and drink were all five-star in my book. The restaurant itself sits across the street of St. Stephen's Green, which is a beautiful garden. If you are from the Bay Area in California, you will be happy to see Cakebread Cabernet Sauvignon on their wine list. read more

I've always had a somewhat hard time finding great food in Dublin, and by always, I mean the one other time i visited. :) This business trip I was accompanied by one of my regular traveling cohorts and we decided to look for a good steak place. We came across Shanahans on the Green, near St. Stephens Green. Upon walking up to Shanahans, we noticed the window stated "American Style Steakhouse". Walking in, we noticed the place fairly elegant and we may be underdressed by wearing jeans and tshirts. In retrospect, this would be a good date place for a time when I am able to bring my lovely wife. We started with a crab "sandwich" which was really more or less crabcakes. They were pretty good to start dinner off. I chose the filet, medium-rare, for my entree with mashed potatoes. While it wasn't the greatest steak I've ever had, this was by far the best meal I've had in Ireland (unless you count Guinness as meal, which I do sometimes). Shanahans is a bit on the pricey side. We ended up spending about $200 euro for 2 people, with not much in the way of alcohol, but if you're looking for a good steak, this fits the bill. read more
