This is a nice little place that you wish less people know about so you could enjoy it more often. There is not a whole lot of seating and it's really a gamble when you show up if you'll get the chance to stay. Though, I can't fault them on that because their seating is all oversized, comfy armchairs that you just sink into, so that is a sacrifice I can appreciate. But again: often crowded. There is a fireplace and vintage furniture, makes for a great atmosphere when you want a quiet drink, though it can get pretty loud because it's often full. They do have a nice selection of drinks though it's not as huge as some bars, but it's a nice place for a Port or Whiskey. I am a little put off by the staff, but it depends on who's there. Sometimes they're fine, not going out of their way to be nice, but decent. Though, one particular bartender is... tactless and comes off rude. Ordering from her is off putting because she doesn't really listen or answer your questions. It's too bad because when we come in and see that she's working the bar it kind of puts you off. I should seriously be wearing some tweed garments, have a pipe in my mouth, a cocker spaniel at my feet, and noshing on scones for this review. Alright I think I'm mixing up the Library Bar with Sherlock Holmes, sprinkled with bits of the Darling Buds of May. Let's tone it back a tad. I'm not even sure if there is any tartan or tweed in sight, and there definitely are no scones on the menu. But there is dark wood, and big manuscript writing chairs (That's it! I shall write a manuscript!), and gold fittings and dark wallpaper and muted lighting and plush carpets. You feel a little like you've discovered somewhere you shouldn't be. (Or is that just me and my overactive imagination?!) Either way, it's a hell of a spot. All cosy and warm and cosy and just so feckin well.. cosy. They have good WiFi so you can work away or have meetings til your heart's content. I had some lunch here which was ok - it was crab salad - not brilliant, not terrible. A little saucy (in a not good way), and bland. And cost €14.50. BUT still. My guest's pork sausage sandwich and soup combo for a tenner looked and smelled delish. My only complaint (besides not loving my food) is that perhaps it might be just a teeensy bit too quiet? Like perhaps some barely audible background music might be nice? Tucked away from the madness... This is a true Dublin gem! A very classic hotel bar yet open to the public, it's located on the 1st floor of the grand hotel on Exchequer Street and is a great little nook when you just want to have a good bar, with just the right amount of atmosphere so you can catch up and chat away with your friends. Introduced to this place through a friend recently and it's on my list forever more now when it comes to finding that perfect, catch up with your friend over a drink. The blend of people is great, age group is that bit older as in over 30's so it's got just the right feel for me. Blend of tourists but interestingly on the 3 times I've been here now it's been good ole Dublin folk too. If you are after loud music and a sneaky pull, this is not the place but chilling is your thing... Yes. I was shown this bar on Saturday night on a pub crawl with someone who has lived here for 10 years. We wondered where she was taking us to start with as you walk into a hotel and head up the stairs and end up in a very nice bar off the beaten track so to speak. The Library Bar is a quiet and very quaint little niche, tucked away in Dublin 2. I went in there with some friends and had no idea what to expect, the setting alone is worth the visit. It's a quiet place with a old fashioned style of decor, really takes you back. It's a great place to have a quiet drink and a chat with friends, perfect for a relaxed drink in the afternoon, a quick drink before you head out to dinner or, in our case, the perfect place to end a rowdy night out. The Library Bar is like an oasis in a sea of loud, vomitus bars. It's smoothness is felt as soon as you step foot inside. Located in The Central Hotel, The Library gives you a private feeling, almost as though you belong to a secret select club (even though you're mostly drinking with tourist staying at the hotel). It's a place to unwind after a long day of... sighting? working? shopping? ah, drinking!! The decor kind of reminds me of a "Speak easy", dark wood, comfortable seats and sofas every where, a few antiques, a fireplace, some old paintings, and they have a few books on the shelves (I mean they are called the "Library"). Very warm and inviting like someones living room. The staff moves at their own pace but are very friendly and will chat with you all night if you sit by the bar. If fact it is a great place to meet all kinds of locals and travelers. I didn't just love it because I was staying in the hotel, I loved it because it was the closet bar to my room. ;) read more

When we first got to know one another, the Library Bar and myself were like dogs on a full moon. The Library Bar plied me with it's finest and reasonably priced pots of tea and I swooned over its ornate furniture. My heart was aflutter at the austere drawing room atmosphere, the lack of music which makes it great for meeting people (even my reading group meets there sometimes), the open fire in cold weather. Darling... Then there was new management which charges 3 euros for a tiny pot of tea. Alas! For a tea addict like myself this was catastrophe!! And to add insult to injury one has to use a card to use the bathroom... But it is still the one of the best refuges from noise in the city centre, a good place to escape to with a book for a few hours, especially the inner room. I teach budding librarians so I naturally had to check out "The Library Bar." If you like wearing a tweed jacket with elbow pads and don eyeglasses because you actually suffer from astigmatism and not hipsterism, than the Library Bar is your place. You'll climb up some stairs and upon entering the bar, you're greeted with opulence. Plush chairs, and a small tasteful bar await you. The first thing you'll find is that the Library Bar is quiet, but not boring. This is important. When I went there there were a lot of people, so you felt that the place was lively but you could still have a great conversation without yelling or speaking into others' ears. The drinks were good, with a great deal of the clientele sipping wine. My friend and I were able to enjoy a great discussion spanning weighty topics such as politics, philosophy, and spiritualism. I felt smart and stroked my imaginary beard. If you want to escape the usual drunken revelry of Dublin, the Library Bar is your sanctuary. read more

First time here and it is a warm cosy setting , old furniture and calm setting . Drinks are fine expensive enough with an OK welcome from bar man . Seating is small so hard get a table but we where lucky and did . Ordered food and got fish and chips , very nice . Bar bites are lovely ....well recommended . Hard to believe that last night at our CMYE was my first time here. I love it. Great mix of people from weary shoppers to writing groups gathered on antique chairs with soft upholstery and chatting over their drinks in a room with no music just conversations. I always feel so sneaky and in the know when I'm at Library Bar. It's a resident's bar in Exchequer street's otherwise unexciting Central Hotel. This cozy few rooms with Real Live Books on the shelves feels like a rare discovery every time I'm in. Those plush sofas, that roaring fire... it's less a bar than a living room! On a ladies' night in the sub-arctic depths of December, myself and the girls pulled up close to the fire and agreed to keep things simple with a whole night spent chatting by the hearth. The service was slow, but we didn't mind. (In fact, the service is slow most days but no one really cares in this elegant bar.) We were there for the atmosphere. And what's best about this hidden pub is that every occasion -from happy hour to mid-afternoon stop in -feels a little grander here. When you go, bring cash, because even if the bar accepts cards you'll only slow up the line. Another tip: horde chairs. They are comfortable and precious things, great for bargaining and difficult to find once it gets busy. read more

It's cozy and unique (a bar in a library) and a little hidden...but it's WAY too packed now and there isn't really much standing space. Every time I go, you approach empty seats that have been empty for a long while and you get a glare from someone "these are taken" or "Saved." I guess it's more defensive customers that are ruining the experience for me. Perhaps you'll get lucky...and fine some nice seats. Library Bar surprised me in a few ways and as a result has a place at the top of my "go to" list. Not Stuffy Although the name invokes angry librarians shushing people and literati exchanging views on Faulkner over the tips of their noses, this place is not stuffy. Actually it's quite egalitarian and you might have an academic fellow in the corner reading a book whilst I am in the other corner throwing back glasses of red wine with a friend. Even though the decor is rather uppety (claw-foot chairs with pink paisley, walls of hardbound classics, a dark wood bar in the corner) there is no need to get dressed up for the Library Bar. Conversely you would feel comfortable here in your finest. Somehow they have achieved the perfect balance. We CAN all get along! Quality Wine The house red I had on my first visit was exquisite. It was an Italian cab and unfortunately I didnt ask to see the bottle until I was about 5 glasses in so I have no idea what the name was. Most places serve their worst as the house wine but I was impressed Library Bar served me such a nice glass at such a low price. The second visit saw a rich, fruity merlot without the slightest hint of vinegar. Volume I prize a pub you can take friends to and have a talk. In fact I find it the the most endearing aspect of the Library Bar. You can sip away all night long and actually talk at a normal vocal level. I went to the Library Bar over the holidays with my coworkers for our Christmas drinks. I was surprised that I've never been or even heard that much about this pub because it's quite good. There were loads of people inside and it was hard getting to the bar to order but the bar staff were great, pouring all the pints with perfection and taking orders of ten drinks without breaking a sweat. If you want to go for a quiet pint and feel aristocratic while you're doing it this place is perfect, I actually felt under dressed given the plush surroundings but the atmosphere was nice and it wasn't a bad pint of Guinness either! The Barmaid was also lovely and asked where I was sitting so that she could drop the pint down to me instead of having me wait, which is pretty rare in the city centre these days, and it wasn't extortionate either at €4.95. My only negative is that for some inexplicable reason the bathroom requires a hotel room key... Being so close to my home stretch of the city, I was surprised I had never heard of this tiny hotel drinkery hidden in the hustle and bustle on the environs of George's Street. On entry, I was happily appeased by the relaxed yet friendly atmosphere of this charming little bar. It's like walking through a time portal with its small, plush yet comfortable bar area which is adorned with antiques wherever you look and hints at a gentleman's club-type establishment with racehorse prints and authentic oil paintings adorning its oak-panelled and pastel green walls. The menu is small but regularly updated with specials such as foie gras & duck liver terrine served with spiced apple chutney with toast. Excellent spot for a lovely drink. I was surprised I'd not been here sooner. Also between the old school Dublin bar decor and the Christmas decorations, it was very appealing to the eye. It was cosy too, we were sitting right in front of a traditionally cover radiator. I ordered a glass of wine, which was a pleasant drink. While my buddy went for the non-alcoholic Paulaner. I've hit the Library Bar two Saturdays in a row now, as part of a writers group that meets there regularly. If you go, know that it's UPSTAIRS in the Central Hotel, a fact that evaded me at first. Once inside, the place has a small bar area, more of a service area, and wonderful little arrangements of comfy chairs gathered into little conversation groups around tables. There's a selection of beer and of other drinks available, as well as a light menu of eats. I haven't tried the food, but it's one of the places in Dublin that feels unpretentiously cozy, and it's a great spot to meet with a few friends or bring a book and sit by the fire and read. The walls are filled with old books, the decor is warm and feels like it was last redecorated a century ago, but in this case it all works to provide a really nice atmosphere, vs. the kitchsiness that is sometimes found in places like that. The staff has also been amazingly tolerant of our re-arrangement of furniture, and there are a few power outlets sprinkled around for laptop users. Of course, I'm an inveteratate eavesdropper, and with a high backed chair tucked away in a corner, a book makes a great cover for my favorite pastime. The denizens of the hotel range from budget travelers to illicit liasons, so grab a pint and perk up your ears! Bottom Line: If you're in town and want a quiet chat or an out of the way cozy cup of tea or a pint while you listen to the rain, this is the place! read more

Comfortable and familiar. Recently had a nice get together here with some friends and colleagues. While it was busy and practically full, it is absent that crowded and noisy feel. It's warm, friendly, and I genuinely feel comfortable and relaxed here. The seating is comfortable and conducive to promoting conversation. This is augmented by the absence of music, which allows the mixture of laughter and chatter to garnish the atmosphere. Nice place for a quiet drink. It's hidden away on the first floor of the Central hotel and even when its busy, it has a nice calm quality to it. The bar men are very nice too- I had a great chat about gin with one of them the night I was in. Its not a fancy place- there is a faded gentility to it that harks back to olden times. They dont have piped music so the only sound you hear is the buzz of conversation ( and the odd mobile phone) Check it out when you around that part of town. read more

The first time we visited Dublin, we stayed at the hotel that houses this fine establishment. What a great way to reflect and relax and the end of each adventurous day! Second time visiting, I found myself experiencing a nervous tick and realized I needed to go back for old times. The experience did not disappoint! Comfy chairs and couches on the second floor, overlooking a main drag. The bartenders are welcoming an the conversations are always bountiful. I love getting engulfed in a conversation and/or people watch as I stare out the window, while sipping on a glass of robust, red vino. We booked a room at the Central Hotel before realizing the hype of the Library Bar; we were in luck! This is definitely a neat spot and worth the stop for a drink. You feel as if you're taking a step back in time when you walk in; bookshelves, old, Victorian furniture, dark wood bar and a quaint atmosphere. The drink prices are on par with the remainder of the area, as is the service. If you're staying in the Central Hotel, this is the perfect bar for a nightcap. If you aren't staying here, it's the perfect afternoon drink spot. Either way, definitely worth the visit! read more

Funnily enough I'd never even heard about this place until the first time I came here the other week. Turns out I was missing out! Let me put it this way: cosy place for a drink. Comfy seating and good drinking options. What's not to like? This place is upstairs inside the hotel and kind of feels like a hidden find. Considering how crazy busy most bars get on the weekend, I came here on a Saturday night and it wasn't too busy or noisy, we could actually sit down and have a nice chat! I'll definitely be keeping this place in mind next time I want to catch up with friends for drinks without going somewhere too crazy.
