Bring a bucket, get a tare weight, and scoop your own of one of any number of ingredients including comprehensive organic fertilizer (COF) mix . I absolutely love the Eugene Backyard Farmer. I've had nothing but a positive experience every time I've come in! I've gotten my chicks here, ducklings and most recently my bees! Conveniently located, and they carry the organic and non-GMO feed that I need. Customer service is alright to great, depending on who is manning the store. I received great customer service the day a 20ish woman was behind the counter. The older gentleman, who has been there every other time I have visited, always acts like he is in an extreme hurry to get you out of the store. Even when there is no one else in sight to be helped, he acts like you are interrupting something very important. God forbid you ask him a question, he will act like you asked for one of his kidneys! Someone should tell him his customers are the most important part of the business. Eugene Backyard Farmer is one of my favorite places in town. Having only discovered them this spring (six months ago), I've gotten to know the place pretty well. They are always so helpful--whether giving us the ins and outs of chicken care (it was our first time raising chicks), or helping us pick out the best veggie plants and chicken feed. Speaking of, it's wonderful to be able to buy quality feed in bulk. My daughter even asks to come by, just to look at all the adorable hens and baby chicks. My husband and I were both very disappointed with the customer service we received. When asking for advice, as we are first time chicken owners, the owner of Eugene Backyard Farmer was very short and rude. He made both my husband and I feel like he was talking down to us. He rudely told us he couldn't teach us everything we needed to know, that we should take a class. We were only asking for advice on which chicks would be best for our specific living situation. We're very happy with our little chicks, but if we had it to do over, we would just get chicks off of craigslist. I think the owner needs to be more respectful of his paying customers. read more

I had a minor stroke a few months ago and part of my healing process was to get out and talk to people, to sharpen my mind and my speech. I stopped into the Eugene Backyard Farmer to get some grass seed for my cats. I was trying to explain to the girl at the counter what I was looking for but, yes, I was having difficulty getting the words out and she was looking at me like I was a homeless drunk. I finally was able to explain that I have two cats and they love grass but I don't like the store bought grass seeds because I don't know if they are treated with chemicals or not and I wanted to see if she had any grass seeds. She still didn't seem to understand me and just then, I assume the owner, walked out of the back room as if he heard me and he abruptly and rudely tells me in a condescending voice, "We don't have what you are looking for, thanks for coming in, bye now". He then turned away as if I was going to create some sort of trouble or something and he didn't want to even look at me. I was wearing clean clothes, I had showered that day, I am not overly ugly nor do I look like I just smoked crack under the bridge. I have heard good things from people in the community about this place and I am all about supporting locally owned and operated businesses but I will never purchase anything from this place nor will I ever recommend it to anyone. I know my voice won't mean anything to them. It's their loss because I will be adding chickens to my backyard farm and I won't be buying from them. read more

I just read the above review about this store's customer service, and I was so surprised I had to write my own review. We've had nothing but excellent, honest service at the Eugene Backyard Farmer. We bought chicks here, got plans for a chicken coop, get advice on feed and care, even bought a worm bin. Sometimes we just poke around the store with our children in tow, and have always felt welcome. The owner is always happy to discuss different topics - we have been thinking for a while about getting started with bees, and he's talked about it with us and showed us his hive and some honey from it. The owner is very involved in the community, and I've never experienced any rudeness from him at all. Perhaps the previous commenter mistook honesty for rudeness? Maybe he really didn't know the answers to all of her questions? Anyway, my family really enjoys this store, and I suggest you try a visit before being scared off. read more
