My favorite part of Down to Earth is the building. Not knowing the history of the building itself, it appears to have once been some sort of granary warehouse. All the chutes and various chambers are very intriguing, then you get into the wares the store offers. Very much in sync with the atmosphere of the building. It would seem that whatever hobby or craft you are into, they have some of what you need. They definitely have plants, containers and such covered. Next is the cookware, then canning supplies, storage containers, macrame, animal supplies, personal care... the list goes on. The neat part of it all is that it all feels so vintage yet new. What a great find this garden shop was! I could spend hours in here yet was on a schedule and able to spend an hour perusing the beautiful and eclectic merchandise including everything from plants, garden supplies to kitchenware, jewelry and cards. The prices were mostly reasonable which was a bonus. I purchased a beautiful windchime, a soaker hose and face mask. This will definitely be a stop next time I visit Eugene. read more

I was looking for a local garden nursery and found this one, which is more than that. Yes, I got my pellet natural lawn and shrub fertilizer (which they make themselves!), but first I had to check out the front section of the store, which is where you enter, straight into temptation. It's a vintage building that reminds me of a general store from a couple of generations ago: lots of unique home goods (think world market), garden implements, and cute items that will help you fulfill your gift lists year-round. The back part is the garden section, completely stocked with a large variety of fertilizers, soil amendments, and tools, where a friendly employee helped me figure out what kind of fertilizer to get, and kindly offered to add me to the email list, so I now get notice of their sales, coupons, and information on upcoming events and gardening advice. I didn't even get to the plant section that trip, which is in the back. I'm planning to hit up that section in the spring. Prices are decent but not cheap; the sales and coupons may help even things out a bit to help balance your lawn and garden budget. I happily spend A LOT of money at this perfectly-curated home and garden store in Eugene. I love gardening, and given that my husband and I recently purchased a 100-year-old cottage in NE Portland, I need a lot of inspiration. There are plenty of great places to find home and garden goods in Portland, but Down to Earth seems to have their finger on the pulse of everything hot and new. I find all of my favorite things here like Fiesta pottery and cast iron cookware, but I'm incredibly grateful for being introduced to so many new products as well. My experience started walking into a warm greeting followed by excellent service. I was looking for a plant and a nice heavy ceramic pot. The staff helped me and when I say staff I'm being literal. Three different people helped me but most importantly they were helping each other. I was the recipient and it was awesome! All repotted and away I went. Highly recommend this local business. Dude, what a really wonderful building. It's like you took blueprints of a modern Earth-y home gift shop and garden center then planted (get it? planted? annnd I'm out) them in an old barn/mill type building with various shafts/columns/designs in it. End-to-end. If anything, I would say that the lighting in the west garden section is a bit drab compared to the rest, though. The staff was kind & friendly. My quest was pretty chill and just window-shopping the great array of goods & goodies but recently I've always been open to just awesome and snarky magnets for decorating all of my metallic surfaces at homes (the fridge is prime target #1). I found a few and happily applied these things to my fridge back home in Renton. read more

Probably my favorite shop in Eugene, Oregon. I love everything about this place. They have so many cool things, from plants to natural beauty products, stuff for kids, pets, gardeners, housewares, you name it they probably have it. The only con is there isn't enough parking, but if you go during the week it's much better. Plus a great coffee shop nearby as well as a couple other fun places. Every time I walk in here I feel like i'm transported to my dream world. There's always something new I want to look at. I love their variety of plants indoors and outdoors, I got a giant monstera from here a couple years ago for $40 and it's produced so many babies for me to share. I always thought Down to Earth was simply a garden center, but I was surely wrong! While I admire others that garden beautiful blooms and grow their own food, I have whatever is the opposite of a green thumb, so it took me a long time to come to Down to Earth for the first time (due to the aforementioned assumption.) What a fantastic and GIANT place. It doesn't appear near as large as it is from the outside. You can find almost anything garden, home, kitchen and gift related here including some unique local items and nice jewelry. I didn't find the prices to be outrageous either. This will definitely be on my list for holidays and gift-giving occasions. This is a very dangerous store. A store that could potentially kill your monthly spending budget. Shop with caution and maybe with an accountability buddy who can remind you that you don't need ANOTHER rubber spatula. I am a passionate foodie who loves all things Kitchen-y and an aspiring green thumb so I just get lost within Down to Earth. Everything from your garden to dining table they got you covered. What I also love about Down to Earth is that they reach beyond a retail store and offer classes and workshops on a variety of topics including beginning seedling education to tea tastings. I returned a garden tool after a year because the prong head kept falling off and it was the must expensive garden tool I ever bought. It was the perfect thing for what I needed to I tried to fix it. Pros: cool shop with a wide selection of home and garden stuff. I always get my seeds, baking pans, citrus grafting supplies, and fermentation jars/weights here. They are also my first stop shop when I want to assemble gift boxes for any of my baker or garden bro friends. Cons: sometimes the 6-packs of berries/flowers have had one cell barren; there is dirt but no plant so be sure to check the packs well particularly if the plants are bushy or are a bit tangled together. Also the past 2 times I've gone there the cashier (new cashiers each time) accidentally scanned single items multiple times and I only noticed once getting home and going over the receipt. In defense of one cashier she did realize the double scan and then went to scan again trying to take it off the total but it actually never worked and only added the item yet again. Either way it's not really worth heading back and trying to fix $9 worth of overcharges which would only lead to staff thinking I was trying to get free stickers/cards. I've accepted it as my own personal blonde tax for not paying attention and being too chatty while checking out. You know that whole fool me once, fool me twice saying. What a great store! There's absolutely something for everyone here. So enjoyed the vast display of unique kitchen, bath, garden, and housewares items all under one roof and beautifully displayed. My head was spinning, so, so many choices. I saw the most beautiful tea/ coffee mugs that felt so good in my hands . I saw Oregon made lotion and soaps that smelled delicious. I saw colorful lawn ornaments, that were tempting to go home with me. And a huge assortment of bulk bird seed, who knew that was even available here! i could get lost in this place and the employees would have to make sure i'm not hiding in a corner before they shut off the lights and lock the doors every evening. there's something for everyone here--kitchen, bath, garden, etc. and the thing that probably works best in their favor is that the items are displayed in such a visually appealing way! the prices are all quite reasonable and you'd be hard pressed to walk in here without not making a purchase. it's a good thing i don't live closer because i think i'd find any and every excuse to go there. as it is, now that i know about down to earth, i'll be back the next time i'm in town because it's a nice place to look for gifts as well as to get everyday items you may be in need of. read more

I love that they rotate seeds and plants so that whatever you purchase is in season and ready for the garden. I have loved this store from the minute I set foot in it in 1995, when I first moved to Oregon, beautiful green Oregon, from brown and not so pretty, yucky Yuma Arizona. This is a great store. I think it really inspired me to garden. Over the years I bought bulbs here, ladybugs, gardening tools, gifts, fiestaware, greeting cards... I like it. I still go back when I can just to see what's new. Parking is usually a little tight, you can park on the street.. there are plenty of other cool things in the area to do, too, might as well spend an hour or two milling around here. read more

I just went to the Willamette location today and found they're smaller that the main store, but carry the same great products, just a smaller selection. But, the store is laid out beautifully, and the staff are so friendly and helpful. I bought a couple dozen paperwhites to force this fall/winter and got some very inexpensive (under $2.00) bamboo and glass containers to put them in. What a great, yet inexpensive gift to give someone this fall and perhaps for the Holidays. Eugene should be dancing a happy dance that this particular store is in town. Near the entrance, they had some alpaca and wool outerwear items on sale. I scored an awesome printed wool hat complete with a polyester interior (no more itchy hat! yay!) for only $15. Like the store name indicates, they have a wide selection of unique products for your kitchen/bathroom and garden. They seem to have a strong focus on natural products, which is great. I was confused for a moment when a bag wasn't offered for my hat. Alas, I didn't realize it was because I was already holding a bag from another nearby place. Such a responsible mentality. read more

The lady whose sole job it it to hand out masks told me that my mask needed to be fully coverMing the bridge of my nose. Their prices are reasonable and I always make sure to give myself time to peruse the variety of kitchen items they have. Looking for a birthday or holiday present? This place has a great selection! They have everything ranging from beeswax candles, fiesta-ware, books, children's gifts, locally made jewelry, terrariums, kitchen knives, lotions, dish towels, tea accessories, a huge garden/plant section and so much more! They do have a small free parking lot in between their building and Mountain Rose Herbs but I think there is also street parking if it happens to fill up. Normally my experiences here are wonderful, especially with the staff. But today when I went in, we were paying for our items with cash and the woman behind the counter was downright rude to us. As my father was fishing out 2 pennies from his pocket, she started reaching for their penny jar. We said "no we have it" and she said a very rude "okay" and gave us a look like we were annoying her. There was no one else in line behind us, and we were buying stuff that, quite frankly, we can get cheaper elsewhere. I just don't "feel" Down to Earth the way other Eugenians seem to. Granted, I've purchased my share of tea cups, debbie meyer green bags, vases and bulbs here, and I like that they offer a lot of organic products. However, ultimately, organic is NOT better for the environment, economy, etc when most of your products are "Made in China". And they ARE at Down to Earth. Ultimately, I feel a bit like other locals get so caught up in the earthy feel of this place that they overlook the fact that this store does NOT offer much local or even American made stuff.
