I'm writing from the perspective of a buyer, so my experience will be different r from those who took her class. I've been buying oils from Heather for 10 years, and I've had nothing but great experiences from her. I went on a wild goose chase to find her and I was able to catch her in her final store front days before she switched over to her home front business permanently. I hadn't been to her shop for years, so I was so excited to have found her! I was looking for a specific product from years ago, and sadly she didnt have the ingredients to make it. What she did was ask what I was needing it for, made a concoction specifically for me, and hand made a custom bottle on the spot for me for $25! Beware. There are many places to by herbs in Eugene and many legitimate herbalists, so you do not need to go here. I have taken a couple of classes there and I will never go back. I have had friends who have gone there and none of them will ever go back. Two of the women were subjected to insulting comments about their cultures. One felt they were treated poorly because of their race. The classes were horrible. "Master herbalist" Heather Nic an Fhleisdeir would frequently go off into irrelevant rants during the classes and waste time (time that was paid for by the students) complaining about everything from other people's lifestyles to environmentalists to whatever random thing came into her head. And she was not particularly knowledgeable on any of the topics she ranted about. At time she seemed rather histrionic. Heather Nic an Fhleisdeir has poor boundaries or little respect for clients, students or anyone who does not agree with everything she says. She sprayed something on a friend of mine without permission. My friend has nut allergies and developed a bad rash and migraine within minutes of the incident. After telling a class that she never diagnoses or prescribes for legal reasons she then proceeded to prescribe herbs to someone who walked into the door. And she did so without asking this women any important questions like allergies or pregnancy. This person is dangerous and I do not know why she is still in business. read more

I've had nothing but positive interactions with Mrs. Thompson. She has always been knowledgeable about the herbs she recommends, and their uses. The quality of her herbs can't be beat, either. The shop is pleasant to visit, charming even, with books, candles, jewelry and other odds and ends. I have been going to Heather at Mrs Thompson's for herbalism classes and advice for nearly 5 years. She is hand's down the most qualified herbalist I have worked with, and I've met a lot of herbalists. Not only have Heather's consultations and products been the highest quality, but I find her grounded sense of balance to be very important and often overlooked by other herbalists. It is important to know the ups and downs of every herb you use, and Heather is well versed in this information. Herbalism is a very old trade, and Heather has mastered it well. I would trust her with her trade sooner than any other practitioner, and I am a picky guy. Any perceived slights are guaranteed to be self projected misunderstandings, as I have personally spent many many hours with Heather in her shop and classroom. read more

Student or Traveler: Get All the Facts in Writing Before You Leave or Sign Up! If you are considering traveling with Heather, be sure to get a full itinerary in writing up-front which clearly outlines exactly what you will be receiving for your money and be sure that refund/cancellation policies are in place that protect you. If a contract is signed, it needs to contain all the daily and full trip itinerary information and also be sure that it protects you in the case of cancellation, unforeseen circumstances, emergencies or changes in venue. A map of the intended tour route and sites to be visited should be provided pre-trip. Back-up plans for sites to visit or coursework should be in place in case of inclement weather, site closures etc. Heather also needs to sign the contract and you should receive an original, signed copy. Don't rely solely on-line postings of pretty pictures and descriptions about the trip, get everything in writing before-hand! It is easy to get caught up in the romance of pictures! Do your homework before you spend your money! Contact several others who have taken classes or traveled with her in the past, don't rely on one or two reviews to base your decision on. For trips, especially overseas: Be sure there is a full itinerary which clearly outlines the modes of transportation, exact places you will visit, course materials to be presented and given to you, guest speaker time and locations, travel times between locations, initial and continuing meet-up locations with information on airport, bus or train transfers and directions/how to get to meet-up locations, meals included, free time for personal exploration of areas visited etc. There should be Regular comfort breaks at least every 2-3 hours of travel and time to purchase food and the locations for breaks and food on the route should be included in the itinerary. Accommodations should be listed and the number of roommates at each site should be clearly spelled out. Meals included should be fully explained and the types of food available should actually be offered at the meal sites listed. For example: Organic, locally grown, vegan etc. Be sure there is a knowledgeable, professional driver and guide who will be in charge of the travel, or that a tour company familiar with the area and sites to be visited has been hired which will provide transportation, navigation and supervision through the length of the trip. There also needs to be sufficient separate space for luggage and safe seating for all tour participants throughout the trip. You should not be holding your backpack or suitcase on your lap while traveling to each location, it can get uncomfortable after a few hours! You also would not want to have one of the tour participants sitting on your lap for several hours due to lack of sufficient seating! If these listed items/conditions are not provided, you should consider travelling with a different herbalist. There are many trustworthy and professional herbalists who are great teachers! read more

If interested in learning from Heather: Get everything in writing, don't pay anything up front (you won't get your money back), have very thick skin (for the tirade of humiliation and insults). If interested in seeing her in clinic: You probably don't need 75% of the products she will recommend. Stick with the tincture formula she gives you and move on. It's refreshing that someone with Heather's expertise will take the time during her busy day and give each person the uninterrupted attention they need. If you don't schedule an appointment with her be prepared to wait while she is assisting the person she is with. She has lots of interesting books etc. in the shop you can check out while you wait OR have her do a 'Private Consultation'. I have done the consultation and she has helped me more than any MD or Nutritionist. I can't say enough positives things about the shop and Heather. read more

UNPROFESSIONAL I visited Mrs Thompson's shop and will not return. Yes, she is charming when you have her attention. But I saw other potential customers completely ignored because she was enthusing on the subject of Scottish lore. Yes, she is knowledgeable about the use of herbs, and "prescribed" some for a health condition I have, but without concern for my other health issues. Furthermore, her enthusiasm for Scottish herbalism, was so extreme as to be creepy. In a word, "fanatical" comes to mind, as defined by several dictionaries: from the Latin "fanaticus" meaning "mad". I prefer to see an herbalist who does not appear (to me) to be possessed with an excessive, obsessive, irrational zeal to the exclusion of all else. read more

Solutions, help, excellent bulk herbs and tinctures, beeswax candles, Three Kings incense charcoal, fine Scots imports, quality herbal reference books, and talented, knowledgeable, owner-apothecary. Heather is great, and I can't recommend her, or her shop, enough. I know patients of her herbal apothecary skills who have benefitted hugely by them, experiencing physical & medical improvements to their quality of life. I know students of her herbal courses that have gone on to "hang out their own shingle" with her blessing. And she walks her talk with Scots culture and folklore. I've been coming to Mrs. Thompson's for 11 years. I don't always buy herbs but I always go away informed and enabled to address the issue at hand. Whenever I'm stumped with a health issue or need additional advice, a conversation with her will set me straight. In reading the other reviews, I'm surprised by their experience. I have not experienced a sour personality ever and like the stories she tells. They will dovetail into whatever problem I have and I'll understand how to help myself or my children better. I've studied herbs on my own since age 14 and went to nursing school, yet almost every conversation with Heather offers me new information that benefits us. I've taken to bringing her gifts or buying something because I have always felt I get more from her depth of knowledge than anyone else in Lane county. The elixir bar is divine. Her holiday celebrations are entertaining and fun. The fact that she expects people to bring their best is refreshing since low quality herbs and information can easily be purchased and supported by the communities they live off of. I always feel like I benefited more when I walk out her doors. And I'm ready to tackle whatever problem I'm worried about. read more

Beware of the distant course that is offered by Heather Nic An Fhleisdeir. She sold me her distant course, which was suppose to be a lesson a week for 18 weeks. The lessons never did come once a week, as a matter of fact, over a year later I had only received 8 lessons. When I dared to ask her, via facebook message, if I could expect another lesson soon, she said maybe! She then got angry with me because I dared to question this lack of lessons and refused to send me anymore! This woman is not a good teacher at all. She can not stand to be questioned, is arrogant in her disregard for others feelings, and is unprofessional in her delivery of paid for goods! I paid in full for 18 lessons with botanical samples included with each lesson and got less than half! The real kicker is these lessons were just a repeat of her lessons that are on the HerbMentor site. So if you pay for HerbMentor, the classes are included. She knew I was a member of HerbMentor and had done these classes there and instead of telling me they were just a repeat, she made me pay a lot of money for them and then only delivered less than half of them! Save yourself some money and aggravation folks. As an add, when you mail order from this business, it can take weeks to receive the products. read more

Students beware!! This teacher in the past has taken advantage of her long distance classes not providing curriculum required to finish classes. She has taken the money up front and never finished the classes. This has happened on many occasions. She also has the most unsanitary place of business I've ever seen. I was mortified to see her 'KITCHEN' which was covered in mold, and was grossly unorganized and cluttered! I would turn her into the authorities if there was any kind of organization that herbalists had to report to. She is a liar, a thief, she has humiliated me in front of other students. She's manipulated me on several different occasions. I will turn her into the BBB, and will be contacting OLCC to inform them that she serves alcoholic tonics and tinctures with no license. Do your homework people, read reviews and know what your really getting into before you send her a check or do any kind of business with this woman.
