I can get lost in their charmingly funky Olive St. location for hours perusing the garden and kitchen departments and seldom come home without some new treasure. Friendly, helpful employees throughout the store are a big plus and whoever does their buying is a genius. Love their little nursery and they're my very best year-round resource for seeds. Have just finished planting several huge bags of their bulk daffodils - the most beautiful bulbs I've ever bought. - most were doubles and triples, fat and fresh, not a single dud. (Sure can't say the same for Jerry's or Gray's) A great value, made even better with their heart warming, store wide senior discount. Have noticed how gosh darned happy the customers look at at Down to Earth - can't say that about many stores. Normally my experiences here are wonderful, especially with the staff. But today when I went in, we were paying for our items with cash and the woman behind the counter was downright rude to us. As my father was fishing out 2 pennies from his pocket, she started reaching for their penny jar. We said "no we have it" and she said a very rude "okay" and gave us a look like we were annoying her. There was no one else in line behind us, and we were buying stuff that, quite frankly, we can get cheaper elsewhere. I want to support a local business but when the clerks act like you're bothering them for supporting their store, I don't see the point. Probably won't be back. Disappointed. read more

Down To Earth houses my gardening armor and employs only the knowledgeable green-thumbed folks. We purchased our organic kale starts, strawberry starts and pea seeds earlier this year and have been pleased with the advice the staff gave us in producing awesome and abundant results. When aphids invaded the kale and I thought I would have to get rid of the plants themselves, a friendly DTE staff educated me on pyrethrin and it demolished all the nasty little parasites and kept the kale looking beautiful. Their marketplace is also fun to peruse around through. They've got a bunch of useful and fun kitchen gadgets as well as gifts. read more

Such a great little nursery for indoor plants! That has a smaller selection of outdoor plants as well. All of the staff wears masks and they have hand sanitisers throughout the store. It's usually busy on the weekends (especially in the houseplant section!) so if you are worried about that the weekdays might be a better option for you. I love their selection and come here a couple of times a month for indoor or outdoor plants. I also have been a fan of their fertilizers for years. So glad I found this place! read more

This store is a wonderland. Everywhere you turn, there is another item to make you swoon with delight. They carry gardening items, make their own compost tea, and you can even buy friendly bugs for your garden! They also carry lotions, oils, potions and tons of fantastic kitchenware! I suggest you shop at the Willamette show. The staff are very nice there. Very bad customer service has become the norm at the downtown Olive store. Employees much rather talk about their weekend plans or family concerns than answer customer questions. I had a really bad experience with an employee named 'Nanette' who kept me waiting at the cashier register while she talked on the phone on a call that was obviously a personal call~then started talking to a co-worker about some time she needed off next weekend~~all while I stood waiting for her to ring up my once a year indulgent purchase of $150.00+~~she then insulted my weight~~as she complained in a self-pitying way about the high cost of food . She really made me feel bad~I had just had a miscarriage and I really didn't need to be treated that way. When I spoke to the manager /owner 'Jim' , he was nice and apologized. He said that Nanette had a bad day. He promised me a gift certificate that never came in the mail. Jim really values his employees. I really respect that~~but it feels like he respects and values his employees more than his customers. The place is constantly overstaffed and the employees are really more interested in talking to each other than assisting customers. So if you want a ~ "we let you shop here, if you are lucky" ~chip on your shoulder ~hippy attitude~ from part-time employees~~SHOP AT DOWN TO EARTH! I grew up in Eugene and I have watched Down to Earth grow. I agree that they have a wonderland of products and Down to Earth used to be one of those stores I missed and I used to shop there long before most of the newer ~j'cool'-just back from the Oregon Country Fair people worked there. I just moved back to Eugene six months ago~last year we lived in Ashland, OR~my husband was working for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. I still miss the products the Down to Earth products. I especially love their French Soaps. I have been into the Willamette Store to buy a bar of soap~~so far the staff have been nice. But after my really bad experience, I just cannot bring myself to buy any plants or starts there. I choose to order plants directly from Territorial Seeds or Renee's Garden online because I like how much they value their customers. So if you have to shop at Down to Earth ~~for their great products. I suggest the Willamette Store. You have a much better chance not encountering the attitudes.:) read more

Great location, great variety of items, and a unique atmosphere, that is truly 'down to earth'. I must write, I am biased. I have a friend that works there, and she is always filling my head with fanciful thoughts... They really train and educate their employees well. I would venture to say she know more about kitchen cutlery than any cute 20 something in Eugene. Down to Earth sent here to one of the manufacturers plants where they gave them in-depth training and insight into the knife industry... I mean seriously, what other place does this with minimum wage employees. Hat's Off. Only drawback. The place is pricey and never seems to offer any lower priced items or options. But hey, it is a downtown specialty store, so that's not much of a complaint. read more

Very cute store but had a bad experience with the cashier, I believe named Rita. We are from out of state so when my brother went to pay, he expected sales tax and handed the lady two $20 bills. She did not look at what was handed to her and gave the wrong change back, and when my brother corrected her she questioned whether or not he actually gave her two bills. She gave the correct change after some back and forth but only after saying "I guess we will use the honor system". Very rude, you should not speak to a customer that way and you should count the money that is handed to you. She also followed us outside and stood watching us while we waited for my grandmother to finish paying inside. Loved the store, but she ruined the experience for me. read more

I cannot believe how rudely I was treated by their staff. I wore a face shield into their store, which is a valid face covering according to governors guidelines for people with medical conditions. Was stopped at the door and told I couldn't wear one in very rudely. Yet they have a chalk sign outside their door saying face masks and face shields are valid face coverings. When I refused to mask under my shield the worker got huffy with me and tried to gang up on me with other sales people. When I called to complain to management I was hung up on! They are practicing discrimination by behaving in this manner and will be lucky not to be slapped with a lawsuit. I have spent a lot of money there over the years, but I will never go back again. read more

She answered all of my million questions (I'm completelt new to planting), she even helped me carry all of my plants, soil, pots, and seeds around checking out and finding everything to start I little garden area. Worst customer service ever, or almost! I went into store concerned that the 'Rose and flowers' fertilizer was causing my plants to get leggy, possibility from too much nitrogen in the mix. I explained that I'd used Rose and Flower mix for years, and never noted this 'leggy' growth. After being passed to another sales person, he seemed not to hear, that in the past I didn't have this problem. He seemed to want to focus on anything, other then the reason I had come into the store, regarding said product. I became so frustrated, that I left store empty handed. read more

She had her mask on the tip of her nose and the sales woman felt the need to tell her she has to wear it at the bridge of her nose! Really?! As a customer who has spent tens of thousands of dollars at DTE you could say I was a very loyal customer. As of today, I will be searching for a new company to fill my organic farming needs. They have changed policy to pinch out the small farmers and only allow "Big Ag" business to purchase their products in the wholesale division. It was the small businesses that helped this business to grow. Now they are too big to bother with us little guys. Be warned! They aren't the same company you grew to love. I've not step foot into this store yet but so far my experience with their staff on the phone hasn't been very impressive. To begin with, I drove down to the location Williamette St because it was listed as open on Yelp, to discover that it was permanently closed with demolition happening on its site. This is my first time going to this store having heard great things about it and being new in town. I proceeded to call their other store which was still in operation but the staff wasn't very helpful. I asked him why didn't they correct the info on Yelp and he insisted that the customers have to write to Yelp to make this update. WTF! Then, today, I called to inquire about a product and was told to hold for a transfer to another department but then was hung up on. I don't get how this place gets overall 4.5 stars rating! Thank goodness I don't live near Down to Earth- I would be broke as a joke. I was so impressed by the product selection at this store (albeit minimal compared to it's larger sister store)--there was still an incredible array of goods to suit all of your organic needs--(pet food, bath junk, awesome housewares, gardening supplies, and composters just to name a few.) Be warned, the strip heading to the nursery smells a bit like manure but that's due to their diverse selection of homemade plant foods and fertilizers. The people who work there know their stuff- Christine was especially helpful. Also, you might be interested to know that they sell Sappo soap discards for way less than retail. I think it's Sappo anyway... whatever brand it is, it smells delicious. All products are sustainable. Do it. read more

I love my South Eugene Down to Earth and I've been coming here more frequently since I've sworn to support local businesses only for the rest of my life. Down to Earth is my source for nice smelling candles, house plants, kitchen necessities, greeting cards, and gifts of all kinds. There is always good music playing and the staff is very friendly. Down to Earth is close to other good local businesses like Southtowne Lanes, Capella Market, Tsunami Books, Arriving By Bike, Metropol Bakery and Wild Birds Unlimited. I'm very happy to see that DTE, especially the charming little Willamette St. location, is getting some love. Lemme break it down for you: DTE is where I buy my... Fiestaware Coffee filters for my Chemex "machine" Territorial seeds Certified organic fruit and vegetable fertilizer Kale starts (for when my winter garden sprouts wither and go kaput because I forget to cover them) Fat separator for last-minute broth making Birthday cards Soap ... I realize that this laundry list makes it seem like you'll walk in to a store with few offerings of a bunch of randomness, but that couldn't be further from the truth. DTE rolls deep on all this stuff, guys! They have the best--the only--Fiestaare selection in town. They offer everything from the seed catalog. They will talk fertilizer with you for hours. They will confirm that anything plastic-looking that you see in the store is, in fact, 100% BPA free. The selection, employee know-how, and fair prices are definitely the primary reasons I shop here. This is one of my absolute favorite stores in Eugene. My boyfriend and I first went when we bought our first herbs from the Saturday Farmer's Market. The clerks in the garden section were very helpful with suggestions for the best fertilizer and soil to use, what kind of containers are best, and how we should care for the plants. Our basil plants grew at a tremendous rate before they died over the winter. But our rosemary was a small and steady grower, survived the winter, and is growing again now. They were also very helpful with suggestions for other plants to plant during what season. The store also has an excellent home and kitchen section, as well as a great collection of cards. I've bought cards for multiple occasions and love the range they have there. Their bath and soap section is also great, and I have purchased numerous small soap samples as presents for Christmas, birthdays, and Mother's Day. I would definitely recommend a stop here for all your home needs. read more
