I moved here from Seattle where they have Seattle ReCreative, a place that takes donations of art supplies and things that could be used for art. I moved to Eugene and was thinking wouldn't it be great if Eugene had such a place, and lo and behold, MECCA! It's like Seattle ReCreative but 10+ times larger! Paint, canvas, paper, folios, yarn, fabric remnants, yogurt tubs, wine bottles, plant pots, scrapbook papers, so much fun stuff to get you thinking creativity on a budget. My only suggestion is they might find a way to fill in the huge puddle right in front of their door, and that they somehow get more parking spaces! read more

I come here all the time for second hand yarn and love it!! But today I donated for the first time ever, and the person in the back room was literally the rudest customer service person Ive ever met. I'll still be shopping there because FOH people have always been so kind and amazing, but idk about donating because I really don't want to experience that again. Didn't get her name, but whoever was doing the donations in the back at 1pm today needed a break or something. She rolled her eyes, only spoke like two words to me and my partner, threw the bags down aggressively, and her overall attitude was not pleasant to encounter. read more

I came here for the first time today and can't believe I didn't go sooner. It's fantastic! There are so many craft supplies to choose from, you can always find something you want. The employees are so nice and helpful. The aisles are messy in a good way and I could easily spend an hour here looking at everything they have to offer. I can't wait to go back here again for all my crafting needs. There is some parking in the back - more than it seems at first. No restroom from what I could see but I could have missed it. Everything was very cheap cost-wise. It is a bit loud from people working on their own projects so if you're sensitive to noise bring some headphones or Loops to block it out. This is a place you go for crafting inspiration. I.E. you don't walk in looking for a specific fabric or yarn. You walk in and browse and let the creative vibes hit you. It's got so much stuff! And if you're an educator/teacher, they have an entire section where you can get free items for your students. Prices are flexible, depending on your income level. There's also an area of consigned art - if you need a piece or two for your abode. I can highly recommend this for anyone into crafts - just allow time to browse. Also, if you have craft items you want to donate, this is the place. Just check their webpage first to make sure they're taking donations - they sometimes fill up. Good place to shop if you want to start a craft without investing too much money in it. read more

one of my go-tos for whatever tinkering / art project i'm working on - a humble, funky and fairly priced gem in our town.

Here's an eclectic and unique shop. There's the usual supplies i.e. pencils, pastels etc. In addition there's jewelry and various art pieces by local artisans. This is a second hand store so what is available are donated items both new and used (scraps etc). My granddaughter found a handbasket of supplies that will keep her creating for some time. I really like the concept of this store in that they are wholly devoted to the artistic community and make it about as accessible as possible for everyone to enjoy this avenue. They are now located where St. Vinnies was across from 5th street market and the additional space allows for the above to continue growing. These are the kind of stores that make Eugene what it truly is at its heart...a community. read more

Cool co-op of arts and crafts supplies. Relaxed and casual vibe with items in nice bins and categories. There are parking spots which are clearly marked for Mecca. We didn't know that and parked on the street. Great place to drop off those extra craft items plugging up the chi in my closet. Extra yardage of fabric that I changed my mind about. Old buttons lying around .. when did it last sew on any button? Organizer Peter Walsh says just toss those things we are saving for 'later'. There is no later, there is only today. This is a wonderful place full of surprises every single time I go. Staff is always cool, supplies is always cheap.

Oh my goodness. I died and went to some sort of DIY heaven when I found this place! My little black soul became a slightly lighter shade when I walked in the door here. My husband and I kind of randomly found it. We parked to go to the Oregon Electric Station to go to dinner, saw this place and decided to go check it out. I was beyond happy just walking in. I saw the brightly colored sign and got distracted, so off we went. When we first walked in, I saw fabrics and knew I was in a great place. We went to browse them and the prices are incredible. I picked up some thread for my sewing machine. We found bags of wine corks for a DIY project, and a few other little things. I spent a whopping $6 in here and was very happy to do so. Many things are priced on a sliding scale, or pay what you want. Some have set prices, but are still really inexpensive. I'd pay double what they were marked and still be getting a great deal. I write a blog and part of it talks about some fun DIY, home decor, and craft projects. This is an amazing place to come and find materials for those projects. Because even if I fail at it, or have to start over, it really doesn't matter because the materials were so inexpensive. I'm not out any real money for a failed project. I found a lot of inspiration as I walked through this place, and some new ideas. That was half the fun for me. Just finding new and fun ideas. Everything in here is donated, and that adds to the awesomeness. It's like a thrift store, but for arts and crafts. It is such a perfect idea. I have no idea why more places like this don't exist. Would I return here? Oh my word, yes!!! I can't wait to go back. I am very much looking forward to another trip in here. read more

I like to come here when I need inspiration or I have an open mind about how to create something. It's wonderful to see so much fun stuff kept out of a landfill and being repurposed. Plus I love that they do classes and such. It's less ideal if you have a very specific material you're looking to acquire; my partner and I sometimes bicker when I want to buy something new and he thinks I should come here instead. But I've created many fun projects that I never would have even conceived of if it weren't for a tour through here. Could not recommend it more, really. read more

MECCA is one of my favorite creative reuse stores in Oregon. They moved and now have a lot bigger location. The staff is super nice as well.

What would it take to get a place like this in my city? I live over an hour away, but my wife and I make sure to come here almost every time we are in Eugene. We are teachers, and they have many items that they give away free to teachers to support students in their classrooms and promote the arts. I teach at a high poverty school, and MECCA's generosity has provided my kiddos with many of the supplies they need. I also just love seeing what is happening in the studio each time I'm here. When my daughter is old enough, I can't wait to bring her here and watch her just create with their eclectic collection of treasures. read more

This place is so great for random finds-- and the things you didn't know you needed, or materials to complete works in progress! My favorite finds have been a really good fountain pen and a full store display of bindis, but I usually come in for craft paint and ribbon. Prices are lower than thrift stores and it's helpful to have alllll of the craft things in one place. One of the places that keeps Eugene wonderful. read more

This place is something I didn't think would actually exist but repeatedly wished it would. A dream come true! A thrift store for art/craft items! Paints, beads, fabrics, rickrack, all kinds of good stuff for a heck of a deal. I got a huge bag of vintage rayon & cotton seam binding for $2. I don't live locally but if I did I would make use of their paints and larger supplies as much as possible. Makes more want to visit Eugene more often! I saw they had a childrens' class happening as I was there too; I think this would be great to bring kids to too. I hope more places like this exist! read more

I was about to recommend MECCA but BE FOREWARNED! Parking in their lot may be very expensive! They have only a handful of spaces, which are barely marked. If you park right next to one but in a Diamond lot space it will be a $35 ticket for you. There is very little signage noting this. So little that I wonder if MECCA gets a kickback. I mean, it'd be the easiest thing in the world for them to put up a sign or poster or two warning patrons about the parking situation. They have all the supplies anyone could ever want. Poster board? Yep. Paint? Yep. Stencils? Pretty sure. Colored paper? You know it. Etc etc etc. But a sign?? Nope. Thumbs down. I know--I'm grumpy because of the ticket. Otherwise it'd be 3 stars. But I didn't give them a 1-star review so there's that. Give the place a look through. Circle through a few times because their little space is jam packed like six grandmas attics of curated clutter waiting for crafty hands to create something out of chaos. But check your parking space first. read more

This is a delightful shop packed with used arts and crafts supplies. There's a nook full of fabric remnants and notions, and there are many little aisles that are well-organized. You can find supplies for making dolls, robots, sculptures (especially assemblage), mosaics, paintings, quilts, or just about any craft project you can think of. I'm probably not MECCA's biggest fan, but Lord knows I'm up there. It's all donated items and scrap items, meant to be used as art supplies. Thrifty artist heaven. It's in the building just east of the train station. Tips for your best MECCA experience: 1. Don't go in expecting to find something specific. If you need a specific brand of a specific tool specifically, go to an art supply store. If you need "some yarn" or "a little paintbrush", MECCA will do. 2. Don't have a super specific project in mind. It's a lot better to go here when you have no ideas at all, and see what they have. See what your creative side comes up with when presented with the materials. For example, I found a bunch of strong, thin thread, cool round woven wreaths, and cheap beads, and decided to start making dream catchers. 3. For best value, start in the "warehouse" (through the door in the back). See if they've got anything in bulk that you're into. Everything in there is "name your own price". My favorite find was a circuit board that I got for a quarter. I tore it apart and made a little city. 4. Follow their Facebook page for all of their workshops and details on their deals (such as Freebie Friday - at a recent Freebie Friday all of their "paper goods" - like sewing patterns and magazines for collaging - were free with any purchase) 5. Go to a class! I did their mosaic class and came away with an amazing piece I would have had no idea how to make before! 6. Do Object Afterlife - check for it on their website or Facebook page in the summer time! It's an art challenge using a mystery recycled item, complete with an art show! I felt like my art was crappy until I won an award at the show for my weird sculpture! 7. Be a cheapskate. You get the best deals digging through the bins. 8. Go back often! Donations roll in all the time and you're bound to find something cool! Also, for Pete's sake, be nice to the people who work (or, often, volunteer!) there. I can't tell you how many times I've witnessed people being grumpy to the cashier about something stupid, like not having a specific item (they're all donations!) or something they can't control (like the card reader not working). There's bike parking just west of the building (between it and the train station). read more

MECCA is a magical place. Although on the inside it's cluttered and a little grimy, and usually has just enough people wandering around to make navigating the aisles slightly challenging, treasure lurks if you look for it. I personally go for the knitting needles and yarn, which are sometimes secondhand and sometimes still in the packaging, untouched. There's also half-full glue bottles, painted-on canvasses that can be painted over, and a bunch of other stuff that's more or less obscure. The shelves overflow with inspiration, and best of all, shopping there is good for the environment as all the items are donated, and they are REALLY INEXPENSIVE... I've never paid more than $7 for an armful of stuff. One example: knitting needles that would otherwise be upwards of $10 are less than $2. I'm not a serious artist, but I've always felt welcome at the store even amongst the more professional types. MECCA gives me the sense that I can create something out of nothing and have it be fantabulous. They also offer workshops (for all ages) and by-donation communal studio space. Whether you're feeling crafty, want to give your kids something to do over summer break, or are a teacher in need of free/low-cost materials, MECCA will help you out. read more

I took my four and seven-year-old boys to the Saturday drop in hours (11-3). They had fun creating a hanging praying mantis. This is a fun and affordable ($3-5 suggested donation) activity that we will definitely be doing again! Next time I need craft supplies, I will definitely check Mecca first. Craft and art supply thrift store. Friendly staff and organized/artistically disheveled merchandise. It is super fun to dig through things and get crafty ideas or chat with other customers. The pay-what-you-want, bulk and generally wildly low prices make it dangerously cheap for those with a tendency to hoard pretty paper or fabric scraps. Making funk out of junk... MECCA's like BRING Recycling for artists, with tons of salvaged materials sold at pennies on the dollar. Used canvases, paint, charcoal, guilded craft paper, x-rays, old slides, old post cards, other people's family photos, wool roving, bottle caps, yarn and yarn and yarn, fabric scraps, findings, tile and glass scraps, mat board, mylar... and that doesn't even scratch the surface. They've got a great studio space where people can stay and play - pottery wheels, sewing machines, silk screens, a printing press... Kids Workshops, Adult Workshops, a free teacher resource room. One of my favorite places that combines creativity with sustainability! read more

Love the reuse and repurpose ideals. Really great resource for our community overall and they have saved a lot of materials from the landfill! Not so much a fan of sideways looks (not always) about what I am donating or getting mixed messages about when they are taking and what they are taking for donations. Would be nice to have Facebook posts about this stuff. Also, if a recommendation is made to take an item that they have too much of to another non-profit for donation, it would be helpful and appropriate for staff to know how it will be repurposed or recycled by the other entity.
