This was the absolute worst breakfast I have ever had. Three of us had different things and not one of us could eat it. I will start by saying the only positive aspect was the fact that the eggs were cooked well. They were extremely greasy but cooked over easy as asked. The toast probably was left open for a few weeks, it was too hard to even eat. The "sausage gravy" was white tinted slime. The chicken fried steak had a weird aftertaste, like the oil they used was old. The bacon was not only undercooked but had a terrible aftertaste as well. I have enjoyed dining at this restaurant many times and always felt the food and service were both good. This week I bought two pies for my mother's 92nd birthday. When I picked them up they were boxed and ready. The top box contained a beautiful light brown apple pie. The bottom box contained a pumpkin pie that part of the crust was black and the top it the pie looked burnt. When my mother took a bite of the apple pie she said the apples were crunchy. Obviously the pie was undercooked. I was so embarrassed. I paid $29.52. I could have gone to Walmart and paid 12 bucks for 2 pies that would have been better than the pies I bought from The Eatery. read more

I'm sitting at my desk having a foodgasm over a patty melt and cottage cheese. I've been to the Eatery at least four times and have always left pleased with my selection. They have a lot of wonderful options, which is the worst part of the whole experience. There grilled cheese sandwiches are very very good. Loaded baked potatoes are good. Onion rings. The beauty of the Eatery is you can have breakfast, sandwiches, soup, entrees, whatever your heart desires. Within the last few years they also underwent a complete renovation (formerly known as the pantry) so the interior is fresh, fun and clean. They are always busy, which is definitely a good sign, and this is THE place where a lot of older adults who don't have to be stuck behind a desk meet and eat. But that has never deterred me. Came here for a late breakfast midweek. The place had a crowd that seemed promising. Menu had a wide variety even at 11 with ability to get breakfast all day, winner in my book. We ordered veggie omelet and chicken fried steak accompanied with coffee. Our waitress was friendly and kept our coffees always full during our meal. My omelet was delicious and included fresh ingredients. We had asked for blueberry syrup and they did not have it so we were surprised with blueberries in our pancakes-delicious. This is definitely a diner with a small town feel but the menu boasts some good dinner selection and lunch selection. They serve alcohol as well. I could see this replacing my trips to greenfield's in the future. I can't say enough about the service. All waitstaff was friendly and gave meal recommendations to those around us. Visit for the home cooked food and enjoy the friendly staff and fresh food. For breakfast in the price point I'm not sure it can be beat in Lincoln. read more

Quintessential "Heartland" cooking is served up at The Eatery. I've been dining here since I was a kid. There have been some changes along the way; some big, and some not so. It's gone from being "The Pantry", to being "Howard's Pantry", to its current name. I am not all together sure about that new moniker, but that's not what is important. What is noteworthy is that the food is consistently good. That longevity is to be applauded. And it offers alcohol now, which it never did during its "pantry" days. If you know about the long-lost sandwich called Cheese-Frenchie, then come by and order one. The Cheese-Frenchie is alive and well here, and no one prepares it better. Of course hardly any restaurant does offer it anymore. This sandwich represents a by-gone era in this part of the USA. It was "haute cuisine" in its day; in-demand as much as the hamburger. I am not going to tell you how its made. Just try it and see. Better yet, bring a bunch of kids and observe their reactions! Get the 1/2 sandwich and soup. Pair the Cheese-Frenchie with a bowl of their homemade tomato basil bisque--perrrrfect. Great breakfast, all day. The menu for this is extensive. The weekend prime rib special is killer. There are 2 size options and it melts in your mouth. The loaded potatoes and many veggie sides to choose from are dreamy. Starts at 5 pm on Fridays and Saturdays, until it runs out. Get there early is my recommendation. They offer some of Nebraska's newer micro-brews. I was blown away by Cornstalker, a dark beer made from wheat and a bit of corn, made in Kearney. Where in the world have you been all my life?! What truly rules here is dependable comfort food. It's a very clean establishment; the floor crews hustle and are quite personable; and the prices are reasonable. The acoustics are perhaps not the best. The space is a curious octagon shape, with windows that wrap around the entire restaurant and booths galore. I do love a large booth. The Eatery is an original and to be cherished. read more

These people were great! I'm from out of state and was calling around to various restaurants to find a place that could accommodate 15-20 people after college graduation. They cheerfully said they could make it work. When I got there, I was pleasantly surprised that they had set us up in a separate room so we could have some privacy. Our server was very attentive and the menu was so diverse that everyone could find something that they liked. They even gave us plates and forks to use to ear the graduation cake we'd brought in. We enjoyed our whole experience with them. We hope to visit the restaurant if we make it back to Lincoln again sometime. read more

Our waitress Makayla was sweet, quick and attentive. Over all the service was great and the food was good and reasonably price. The menu food that is. The "salad" bar was kinda small. The salad bar was $3.99 to add to any meal or $9.99 as your meal itself. As it being our first time there I scouted out the salad bar. Thinking maybe I could have it as my meal. Well, it was only salad and salad type things. I was thinking maybe they had soup or 1 or two hot foods so it could be a "meal". But unfortunately it didn't. I ordered the Gold Coast Chicken sandwich and my hubby had the Patty Melt. Both were yummy and the fries were very good. $3.99 is a good price for an add on (one trip) salad plate, but $9.99 is a bit much since there isn't a lot to choose from. The onion rings are the best in town!! Make sure to get onion ring dip!! Probably in my top 5 favorite things ever! I usually get the chicken salad croissant which is excellent. Unique place with a diversified comfort food menu. This was a very surprising stop and one that we will continue to repeat. Previously, it had probably been several years since my first stop here when it was still the Pantry. The interior is now nicely upgraded and feels like a large cafe. The environment is clean and well lit with the large open windows. The menus are loaded and appear to have a range of traditional short-order selections with some interesting twists and options. My companions had the Fish sandwich and Reuben (with an added beef patty). I had the herders pie (shepherds pie) and the tomato bisque. The Reuben and Herders I split and really liked the Reuben. The beef patty was an awesome addition to an already tasty sandwich. The corned beef was tasty on a lightly toasted marbled rye. The Herder's was also enjoyable and very filling with a typical beef stew like spread and mashed potatoes on top. I would not recommend coming here for brunch buffet. Look into Granite City or other places first. The food is not bad, but the selection and prices are ridiculous. We do a Sunday buffet at least twice a month and this is by far the worst value I've ever had. They charged $6.99 for a 24 month old. She ate one munchkin doughnut. The manager told me "its like going to the grocery store, you still have to pay the same price for the food". What? I buy the same amount of food at the grocery store as I did before. At this age they eat like a bird. At Granite city her food and drink is free, so although you pay a couple dollars more for an adult plate, you spend less overall. Then, let's talk about the fact that a salad bar is set up right next to the buffet, but that is not included. So what is on the "brunch" buffet. Your typical pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, ham, donuts potatoes, fruit, biscuits and gravy and other such tasty breakfast foods. The food is good. Lunch or "brunch" foods? Kielbasa? I've had good experiences each time I've been here. Great meeting room with room for ~20 people. Plenty of light, 2 wall-mounted monitors, and servers are unobtrusive. It's located far away enough from the dining room so meeting won't be disturbed. Had breakfast there for the first time ever today. It was like a cleaner, nicer, less-crowded, local Village Inn. Pancakes & bacon were good. Our server, Harlan, was ON IT - he was quick with buffet plates, orders, and was knowledgeable about their vegetarian options. I'd qualify the eatery as a "good, not great" place to eat. The service really sets the place apart, but the food wasn't too memorable. My wife and I kept commenting that this feels like a quintessential Nebraska restaurant: incredibly friendly staff with a homestyle comfort-food menu. I got a cajun pasta dish which was enjoyable but not ground-breaking, and my wife got a burger which was pretty great. I will say the demographic skews a bit older (at least the night we were there). Michelle was an so flexible to work with as I had to stay in my budget and she provided a plethora of options that were difficult to choose from. Each menu item was delicious and well crafted, complimenting each other expertly. She even adapted the menu to be vegetarian without any pasta in sight! The ordering situation was very strange; my father and I opted to take menus, find a table, make a decision, and then go up to the front counter to order (though I think they prefer that you order before finding a seat). I ordered a breakfast combo with hash browns, chicken fried steak, and two eggs (scrambled). The hash browns and chicken fried steak were decent. The eggs, which were supposed to be scrambled, were more omelette-like in appearance. Having worked in food service before, I immediately suspected they were "liquid egg product" instead of fresh-cracked eggs. This suspicion was confirmed when I cut into the "scrambled" eggs and had egg-liquid pour onto my plate from the uncooked center. I showed this to our server, who also agreed that this looked gross. She brought me some new eggs right off the bat, but these were only slightly more cooked and still obviously "egg product". The service was friendly and two thirds of my food was great, but the egg experience taught me that this was a restaurant with lax quality control and cheap ingredients. Nice local neighborhood feel, big selection on the menu, excellent service. I had the black and bleu burger with coleslaw. Despite being overcooked for my taste, the burger had lots of flavor and was juicy. The coleslaw however left much to be desired. Seemed like something from KFC and not a homestyle diner. My oldest child had the mac n cheese with cremini mushrooms. It was decedant, comfort food at its finest. My youngest child had the chicken supreme omelet with hash browns. It was huge, slightly overcooked on the edges. It was stuffed full of cheese and vegetables, but she was halfway thru before she found the chicken. She did comment how juicy and tender the chicken was though. The hash browns were perfectly browned and not at all greasy. She was so impressed with her order she said it will be the only thing she orders when we return. And return we will. We just moved to Lincoln a few weeks ago and have been trying out the local faire around our new neighborhood. We tried the Eatery for lunch today, and it will be a regular visit for us. It has traditional American comfort foods, like burgers, breakfast all day, quiche, a nice fresh salad bar, and desserts. I got the soup & salad combo, choosing the tomato bisque, which was good. The salad bar was fresh, and had several types of greens, as well as, 3 bean, broccoli, & potato salad. My hubby got the quiche and eat every crumb. I watched the food go by to those around us, and it all looked delicious, with generous portions. They have several kinds of burgers with at least quarter pound patties. They also offered a portobello mushroom burger for vegetarians, along with several items for sugar free, gluten free, and other special requests. They also offer cocktails. Inconvenient to have to decide what to order while standing in the lobby looking at an extensive menu, especially if there are a lot of other people in the way. The blue cheese burger was very good, juicy, large, & flavorful. But the fries were ordinary & not near as good as The Pantry's crinkle fries. The ketchup bottle the server brought was two squirts from being empty & she never showed up again so had to go in search of another ketchup bottle on my own. Great place! The menu is big and the food is tasty. Something for everyone on the menu. Service was fantastic. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner all day long. There is even a nice selection of local craft beers! The onion rings are delicious. The old 'Kings' recipe (local reference). The fried mac-n-cheese is a must try. The rueben sandwich was good also. Breakfast burrito was big enough for two! Save some room for dessert. The malts were delicious and my daughter made short order of the blondie. Banana cream pie was pretty good too.
