We were really in the mood for a bloody Mary and a quick bite to eat. This place had some quiet tables outside where we were sat right away so was perfect. Our server came out quickly and was friendly. We ordered a few cups of clam chowder that came out immediately and I have to say we both were very impressed! The bloody Marys were very tasty and exactly what we wanted. Lastly, the firecracker shrimp came out and we wern't as impressed. I thought it was ook, but my guy wasn't impressed since had more of a mayo dominated based sauce. I've definitely had better firecracker shrimp. We drive from Southern CA to Northern CA often and when we do, we take the 101 so that we can detour through Morro Bay, and the amazing clam chowder from the Dutchman. We order oysters, ahi nachos, clam chowder, and their version of fish and chips...all tremendous and flavorful. The location is on the water, and both lunch and dinner offer appropriate ambiance (imo). This was an accidental find but turned out to be pretty good. Initially wanted to try either The Galley or Giovanni's Fish Market, but one didn't open until later and the other was having some issues in the kitchen. Ordered cioppino, snapper, shrimp cocktail, clam chowder, and grilled cheese sandwich (for kids). Cioppino had really good broth and came with numerous seafood, like prawns, calamari, clams, mussels, and half lobster tail. Portion was pretty good too. Snapper tasted pretty good. It was pan roasted with some vinaigrette sauce to give it little more flavor than just simply adding salt & pepper, like some places. Even the rice pilaf and veggies on this dish tasted good. Presentation was vibrant with different mix of veggies. Shrimp cocktail and clam chowder were pretty standard, but slightly better tasting than ones I had in the past. Service was good and attentive. Had a surprisingly delightful dinner here. I'm usually disappointed by the mediocre offerings along the water but this was great. Food was solid. Service was excellent. We got the seafood tower, fried calamari, fish and chips, and a shockingly good persimmon salad. Calamari was excellent - light and crispy. Perfect beer batter on the fish and chips. The oysters on the seafood tower were also excellent. Next time I'd probably just order oysters and not the full tower. We weren't fans of the ceviche but the salmon spread was good. We called 6 hours ahead of time and was told that they close specifically at 9 PM. I was taking my girlfriend there for a special birthday dinner. After a long drive from Los Angeles we got there at 8 PM only to find the staff was closing up for the night. When asked, they decided to just close up early that night. That's the reception we got. We never returned. If you would like a fine dining experience with better views, better atmosphere, and certainly better service... In my two visits, I have enjoyed your cioppino with its zesty broth and good selection and presentation of seafood. I am less excited about pretty much everything else that I've tried on your menu. The clam chowder, for instance, needs a serious overhaul. Soggy chunky celery? Not good. Please rinse the sand from the clams. Nearly shattered my teeth. The seafood stock or whatever you do for flavor, comes across as a mild creamy mush. Help! More flavor please. And not the neon pile of paprika or whatever that is that sits on top. Of the three or four clam chowders that I've had in Morro Bay, yours easily ranks last. (Even the oyster crackers were stale) The Panko crusted Parmesan halibut was pretty good, if a little dry. The garlic mashed potatoes are welcome and somewhat creamy. I didn't taste much garlic. The mixed vegetables are undercooked. I guess that's better than overcooked, but still the broccoli and carrots were too crunchy and tasted rushed out the door. The Seabass, a special, was serviceable, and OK. More interesting is the flavorful rice pilaf, which complements the fish. TLDR: Cioppino is good, but the two fish entrees are forgettable. I really liked our recent server, Josie. She had solid, helpful answers and details about the food and wine. Your prices are reasonable, service is attentive, and I really like the vibe of the main room. I wish I liked your food more. I've been twice in the last two years, including this week. Hope things take a big turn soon in your kitchen. There are too many restaurants in MB to settle for 'meh'. read more

My favorites were the oysters and the fish and chips. The oysters were so fresh. It tasted scrumptious with the tartar and horse radish sauce. The fish and chips were also amazing. The cod fish were fresh and fried to perfection! The clam steamer is good, but the soup is a bit on a bland side. My least favorite was the ahi poke. The poke was fresh, but there were so many wontons and sauces and so little fish. The proportion is not right and the sauces really take away the flavors of the fish! Plus, the wontons were a bit undercooked and the pieces can be bigger. I wanted to try Dutchie. Reviews, and food looked good. Was most interested in the cioppino. It was 11:30am on a Saturday and less than 20% of the restaurant was full. The young male host was kind,, "party of 2,,.great I can seat you right over here" as he grabs 2 menus a woman walked over and said "just so you know we have a 90 minute table limit". I immediately responded "well I hope lunch doesn't take more than 90 minutes". Host sat us. Left the table and then we walked out! Mind you it was not a table on the water, but set back a row. The service from Tyler was extra special, as he took care to offer suggestions for gluten and lactose-free menu variations. We ordered the clam Steamers and a special salad (pear, arugula, pistachio crusted goat cheese) to start. The clams were small and tender and tasty even without the butter in the broth. Great place to eat! Came out here for Father's day weekend. Someone at our hotel recommended this place and I can see why they did. Great place all around. We were able to find parking across the street. The view is gorgeous, especially during the sunset. The staff is very friendly and service was great. I started off with a cup of clam chowder. It was delicious! Loaded with flavor. I definitely recommend it. It was my fave! I would do a bowl of this for dinner and be satisfied. We also had some oysters. Tried this location around 4:00pm on a Thursday on our walk down the Embarcadero. The hostess sat us at a table with a bay view, which was great, but I made sure to ask if it was ok to sit there since we were only ordering drinks. She was so friendly and articulate and told me it was totally fine. While the server was professional, she definitely flinched when we said we were only there for drinks. I then asked my husband if he'd like oysters and he was very excited but she let us know there was a red tide so no oysters for a few days BUT she didn't offer us anything else or try to upsell at all. Honestly, we would've stayed longer but we felt like we were holding up her table. FYI if you're a person that runs hot like me, it was VERY warm/stifling in the main dining area when we arrived. This time we had cod and chips which we preferred to the regular fish and chips. We also had the platter which included fried fish shrimp calamari clam strips and baby octopus. Calamari was great. The crab meat look more like tuna, and the shrimp were those little tiny ones that you get in a 99 cent cocktail in Las Vegas downtown back in the day. The clam chowder is very pasty and in fact it was cold and we asked them to please warm it up. They had just opened so I doubt it is homemade. Almost no clams at all. My husband ordered halibut and it was overcooked. The iced tea is superior watery. I suggest you go on Yelp and find a better place to eat. read more
