In Morro Bay, CA. Of course I had to gawk at the Rock and walk along the boardwalk. Lil Hut is a fish n chips stand that has been a traditional must stop. But oh oh... the universe shifted when I last visited a few weeks ago. As they handed me my three piece fish n chips order, I looked at the fish and a sad sigh of disappointment hit. The size of the fish was minuscule. Not quite worth the price tag. It didn't get better from there. Hoping that it would taste good. Nope. The crust was hard and over fried. The filet was dry. The fries were not much better. So disappointing. Huge letdown. Possibly an off day with the handling of the frying temps. It happens. Possibly their other menu items are better. Their signature Crabby patty burger and .... clam chowder, burgers, dogs, salad, shrimp fry..etc.. They have an enclosed patio with tables. It sits along the edge of the water so great views of the harbor and Rock in the distance. If you sit at the outdoor tables outside of the enclosure, just watch out for the outrageously bold food snatching seagulls. read more

Can't believe I haven't already reviewed this cute little walk-up restaurant before. Every time my family is in town we come here and eat under the covered patio. Seagulls are always begging for food. Lots of memories here, my nephew eating his first pickle, some lady trying to pick up my too-friendly father, my mother commenting that my sister was a "pretty girl in a sea-green sweater"!! Sorry, truly lots of family memories here. That said, I was really disappointed the last time I came here. The so-called handicapped spot is right outside so that was good. The price is really high, I believe they charged a credit card fee, too. The guy at the window couldn't (or wouldn't) hear me, the cooks ended up doing all the work answering my quesitons!! I wish I could have tipped only them. I ordered a cheeseburger with no pickles, no onions, no tomatoes, no thousand, sub mayo and ketchup. He said "plain", I said "with lettuce". The cooks were the ones that heard my order and got it correct in spite of the silly guy at the order window!! I asked about the salad and he said that spring mix was iceberg!! Um, no - very different. Ended up being spring mix so no salad for me. I did order some chicken strips & fries with ranch. Their drinks were only offered in a small cup and I was getting to-go so I stopped by Dollar Tree to get sodas. The wait was longer than expected even though no one else was in line. There is a station outside for condiments. They use one of those electronic alert buzzers to tell you when your order is ready. The fries were good, chicken had the right dipped outside (instead of breaded) but inside was sort of like fake chicken and not enough Ranch dip was included. The burger was dry and the lettuce had cooked!! I will, of course, come here with my family again but after this experience I am not sure what I will order!! Can't tell you how the food tasted as we couldn't enjoy or have our meal due to all the racist remarks going on and a fight almost breaking out in the eating area. Visited during 4th of July weekend, was craving fish & chips real bad & they definitely satisfied my craving. The fish was nice & soft, fries were perfectly crispy. The service was good, ordered quickly & straight to the point. Prices were a little high, but can be expected for a little tourist coastal town. I paid around $42 for an order of fish & chips, a drink, & a clam chowder in a bread bowl. They have cute little picnic tables with umbrellas to sit on that were nice to eat at, there were a few birds around but nothing too bad. The Good: Location 10/10 right on the embarcadero across from the Morro Rock. Atmosphere 7/10 reasonably comfortable and somewhat clean tables with a view. Seagulls and pigeons are aggressive and predictably annoying. The decor is seaport cool. The Should be Better: Food 6/10 oil deep fried from frozen seafood that is just ok, the "smooshed" burgers lack flavor and value. The fries were plentiful but oily. Prices 5/10 priced like fresh off the boat seafood, but it is not. Service 5/10 lack luster for a spot that cost nearly $170 for a casual lunch for 5. I would hope the Harbor Hut offers a better plate of food but if the Lil Hut quick service is a preview they are not doing themselves any favors. Not the worst walk up on the central coast. For service, you order at the counter, get a buzzer and self service for condiments. Seating is outside of the hut with views of the marina. We were looking forward to enjoying some good seafood since by the water. We stopped and ordered two fish tacos and two shrimp tacos and a drink $33. Once seated under an umbrella table by the water. We got our tacos and were very confused. The tacos were covered with a pile of bagged lettuce, cold shredded cheese and black olives. The fish was undercooked and the shrimp with over cooked and rubbery. It was inedible. My daughter went and asked if they could please remake it; THE COOK was very rude and got offended. Asked if the tacos could be like actual fish tacos; fish, cabbage and sauce. They gave us the tacos with piles of lettuce, the fish only and a side of tarter sauce. I ate at the restaurant the day before and it was amazing. Great food. Next day I came to Lil' hut and ordered the clams. They were clam strips but you could tell that they were made in old Grease. They were crunchy dark brown absolutely terrible.-the french fries were soft. I ate part of it because I was starving and threw the rest away.-you can tell when grease is old and the grease was definitely old. Had I known I would have avoided it and ordered a burger-How can the same place be so different. The restaurant was amazing food. This is my favorite spot to stop at every time I'm in the area. Honestly they're the perfect chicken tenders. They do have quite a few items on their menu but it's my go to when I visit. It's also nice because you can sit outside and eat by the ocean. Their fries are also the perfect amount of crunchy. We ended up eating here two times during our trip because we love it that much. On my way out of Morro Bay area, I saw Lil Hut Fish & Chips and was curious on its biz name so I dropped by to check it out. The exterior looks like a hut with the kitchen inside it. No inside seating, but there are outside seating. They have a good menu selections of fish & chips plus chowders along with burgers, hot dogs, salads, sides, and drinks. I went with their local favorite combo special that comes with 2 pieces of fried cod fish, garlic fries, cup of chowder, and garlic bread for $18.50. That was a pretty sweet deal! The young gentleman who took my order was nice. He gave me a buzzer and once my order was done, I got the buzz. Fried cod fish was very good... all fish lightly battered just the way I like it. It came with tartar sauce that I did not hesitate to use LOL. Garlic fries were surprisingly tasty. Chowder was so yummy... full of clams and other veggie ingredients. Garlic bread was decent... nothing spectacular. All in all, it was one delicious dinner! So glad I gave them a try. I would eat here again the next time I'm in Morro Bay. My friend recommended I visit here during my visit to morro bay. Honestly I'm not sure why the reviews are as low as they are, this is a super solid spot! It's right on the water and has great views of the rock. The singular downside is the slow service at the window, but that's about it. The food, however, was exactly what my partner and I were looking for as a snack before heading to Santa Barbara. We got garlic fries and clam chowder. The clam chowder was great--perfectly creamy and suited the cold winter day well. The garlic fries may have been some of the best fries I've had. Nothing fancy about them, just super crispy with an amazing crunch with every bite. They were super generous with the garlic, as garlic fries should be! Honestly, some of the best fish and chips I've had in a while. These are not heavy at all, a light batter and delicious tartar sauce with lots of dill. My husband had the shrimp tacos and he enjoyed them, but thought the salsa had room for improvement. Prices may seem steep, but it is convenient (close to parking lot), fast (with little-no line and your food is ready fast) and tasty! Location- I that it was a order and pick kind of place. There are benches and picnic tables in the area but we couldn't tell if all were for here or another restaurant. Either way, we got ours To go. Snd I know some will dock a star for the location not being sit down, but for parents of an active 10 month old, man it's helpful to just pick up something delicious or to even be able to order something "to go" just in case the little one is not having it while we eat haha. The only thing I will say that has me docking a star-the service. There are young gentlemen working the cashier and their customer service skills could use some sprucing up. They have air pods in one ear AND ask you to repeat yourself, they aren't super helpful with descriptions, and just overall look like they'd rather not be there. Literally the best clam chowder in the area. Every time we come to the Central Coast, we have to stop at the Lil Hut. Service is always good. Food is ready quickly. I have nothing bad to say. The fish was were perfectly fried, seasoned, and flaky. The tartar sauce was a perfect compliment to the fish. The clam chowder was a bit underwhelming as it felt needed more seasoning and tasted just one note. The top of the bread bowl that is grilled was also under seasoned and would have loved more of a garlic flavor.
