Great Thai restaurant in Fells! I had never seen a dish like the gaeng ga-ti pu before which felt like a great tribute to Maryland on the menu. The curry was flavorful and the soft shell crab was delicious. We had delicious fried lotus, Root, golden and crispy and crunchy with a sweet sauce, and we had the standard Thai appetizer chicken sauté with a delicious peanut sauce. We had Penang curry and the sauce of coconut milk was slightly thin and no kaffir lime leaves. We had pad see eew with a pleasant, smoky taste. We also had pad eggplant which was nice. I was so excited to see this brand new thai restaurant in fells point in the old red star. We walked in and were seated immediately. The menu is vast and we decided to try their curries. First off, we arrived right before closing but they greeted us and sat us down which was very nice and much appreciated. The whole place smelled amazing, like layers of spice and flavor. What a terrible first experience with the Dara. Single handedly ruined what was supposed to be a special birthday dinner. After a long day at the hospital, I ordered delivery via Grubhub. After the restaurant made my Grubhub driver wait 45min promising "5 more minutes", my order arrived an hour late and completely cold. The giaow pak did not resemble recent photos in the slightest and was no better than store bought dumplings. The green curry was watery thin with the tiniest portion of undercooked vegetables and unremarkable overdone tofu. An incredibly disappointing meal to say the least. If this is the standard of service and food quality that the Dara holds itself to, I will not be dining here again anytime soon and would encourage other Yelpers to follow suit. read more

Have tried this place twice now and would rate it 3.5/5 but rounding up to 4! I love that they serve cocktails here and the ambiance is dim and cute for date night. Service was a little slow at times, but our server was the hostess, bartender and server all in one. I tried their menu cocktails - Rubin's gin kiss and the never too much. The never too much was a little much, overly sweet to my taste but the gin kiss was nice. My boyfriend had an old fashioned, which didn't turn out right but it was understandable since our server was doing three roles at once, and we don't expect much in terms of cocktails from a thai restaurant. Food was good compared to other thai restaurants I've tried in Baltimore! For starters, we tried the papaya salad which was refreshing and bursted with flavor. We also tried the larb duck which we really enjoyed, great flavors, served with lettuce wraps. We also tried the seasonal ocean spring rolls, which we wouldn't order again. It was a weird combination of spring roll with an assortment of different fish eggs that just didn't taste right together. The service and atmosphere at the Dara was spot on. While I didn't enjoy my pad see ew, it wasn't bad, just not to my taste and I'll try something else next time. My friend loved her massaman curry and my Thai iced tea was elite. The gentleman who seemed to be the manager checked in on us a couple of times, including asking if we were celebrating when he noticed my friend brought me a gift. He brought us mango sticky rice to enjoy for my birthday which I thought was such a lovely touch. The Dara is a great, cute spot for Thai Food in Fells. We have been on the Bodhi Thai train for the last few years, but I will definitely throw this in the mix for delicious Thai food! There were four of us and we got 3 entrees, a (huge) side, and a dessert to share and we were stuffed! I was really happy to see how vegan / veg friendly everything is (which is not always the case with Thai food given the reliance on fish and oyster sauce). The Panang Curry stood out as especially delicious. Only knocking off a star because the service was a little slow (likely due to being understaffed / new). Everyone was extremely friendly and accommodating, but it took a while for them to take our order and it seemed like they had forgot our dessert order, because we had to remind them. All in all, I think that is part of their new-restaurant-growing-pains so definitely will check them out again! read more

I only ordered delivery from this restaurant. The options were good, with vegan alternatives that I assume don't include oyster/fish sauce in sauces. The portions were good, but the food was bit bland and lacking in vegetables. I chose tofu as the protein, but pad thai and curries usually have a lot of veggies; these didn't. There was a vegetable option under protein, but I thought that just doubled the normal amount. The curry had a good spice but that was the only "flavor"; the pad thai was lackluster. The Dara is open until 3pm. My party (4) arrived just before 2:30pm for a late lunch and were turned away, and the restaurant was not crowded at all (It was a Monday). The hostess said the kitchen needed to close at 3. I'm a culinary professional - any pro kitchen should be able to turn 4 meals in less than 20 minutes. So this was a lame excuse to me. I've been to the Dara only once at this point, and I can recommend it with some caveats. When I walked in through the door, I was expecting to sit down on a great date in a lively new neighborhood location. It's got the foundations to be something great, but badly needs to work out a few issues. I felt they skimped on serving sizes (and I usually feel satisfied splitting the average American "main" at a restaurant, and I was really surprised to not be able to order a Singha, let alone other beverages at this "Restaurant Bar" that apparently is not, as they reported not having a liquor (or wine/beer license, as most restaurants have). The Dara has a beautiful interior of old wood, brick, and nicely matched hanging lights that I understand are carryovers from the former Red Star, which closed before my moving to the city. It also has its prior bar, which seems pleasant and like a beautiful place for a bite or a beer after work, if it weren't for the fact that it's now unstocked and without the din of customers you would expect for a restaurant/"bar" like this on a chilly Friday evening. The servers were attentive and polite, and the spice level "three" green curry that my wife got was delicious, tasted fresh, and with what we expected ofr a "medium" spice level for a pretty average American who uses habanero sauce at home here and there. I had the Hatyai Fried Chicken, which was quite tasty and well-cooked, though a little cold on the end pieces. It had a pleasant yellow curry dipping sauce, but not enough to make it to the last of the chicken. Despite the dishes tasting as I had hoped, another issue arose that will keep The Dara from becoming a regular in my rotation: the amount of rice that was served was skimpy, probably less than a cup with the curry, and a bit under 2/3 of a cup with my fried chicken. We ordered an extra side of rice, and even with that, we had to really ration to sop up all of the delicious green curry, not a problem I've encountered at many other locations. With Rice so cheap, I wonder why they scamp out on this aspect of the meal, especially with prices in line with a premium experience. I hope that The Dara can iron out its issues. If they do, I imagine it will be full, inviting, and a great experience. Otherwise, it's immediately apparent they will have difficulty sustaining themselves, as when we visited, we were one of only two filled booths on a prime Friday night. read more

We found this restaurant on yelp. After reading the reviews I thought we should definitely try it. I am IN LOVE and OBSESSED with Thai cuisine so of course I was eager to try it. It is the best Thai restaurant I have ever tried and modestly speaking I have eaten in many throughout the world for 30 years. If you love Thai food as much as I do you MUST try this place. We ordered the lotus root appetizer. I had the green curry crab dish which was to die for... almost asked for the sauce to go... it was that good. It has a special blue rice, the soft-shell crab with big chunks of crab meat that I will dream of until we return to Baltimore. We also had the pad thai, chicken satay and the grouper. We walked in as a group of 5 early on a Thursday, there were only about three people on the first floor. The hostess sat us at the table and we didn't see anyone again for almost 10 minutes. We had asked for diet cokes which we never received until the waitress/hostess came back 15 minutes later to take our order and we had to remind her. During this time we watched her walk around as it was not busy. We ordered appetizers and dinner but everything came out at once and was not all hot. The restaurant itself is very beautiful so it was a shame as this was our second time there since we had a similar experience the first time and wanted to give it another try.
