Which of these decluttering strategies to stay organized? -- 90/90 rule -- 80/20 rule -- 12-12-12 rule -- none of the above -- what are these? I usually apply rule #4 and rule #5 to my spaces, but I am getting it all under control. Did you know that The Container Store has a design team in Custom Spaces to plan out your room and now also installs? That's what I'm talking about. The designer came out to our house and gave us a plan for two pantry closets and three clothes closets. We also did this during the Elfa 30 percent sale. The parts were shipped to our house and in a few weeks the install crew set it up. I would suggest that the installation team bring the parts to the house instead, as some parts were not delivered, and someone had to drive out to another store to get the parts. Other than that, the closets look great, but my closet is already full! Time to employ the 80/20 rule! read more

Any time I need stuff to organize, I come here. To be honest, I don't go to the website or any apps. I need to see the thing in person. They have everything and more. In fact, as I browse, I make a mental list (or a real one on my phone) of stuff to keep in mind that I'll need in the future. I also end up getting stuff I didn't know I needed but obviously did. Or so I tell myself. So many wonderful things they have -- whether for myself or for others. (Try it: rather than giving a gift card, why not a reasonably-sized plastic box filled with pens, phone accessories, and other useful items?) The staff are very helpful and pleasant. They also have organizing services for closets or whatnot. Ask them about it if it's something you can use. read more

Pros: clean, neat.l, nice staff. Cons: overpriced. Everything was so expensive and full priced, and you could get the same items online or elsewhere, for much cheaper.. Also, every time I go there looking for a container, they either have an inferior product, or they don't have that container type I'm looking for. For example,I went there looking for a sous vide container, and I was told that's too specific a a container for them to carry. The Container Store is one of those places I love and hate to go to... I probably end up there twice a year because I put off whatever I need until I really can't take it anymore. If you need any kind of storage -- cute, functional, whatever -- you're going to find it here. That said, you're also going to pay for it. I often feel like I spend a lot more money than is necessary for the "design" of a box. I also feel like I spend a lot of time looking for things. I also end up waiting in lines to check out every time I come... I'm not picking Saturday afternoons for goodness sake. But it doesn't matter -- I'm always waiting in some ridiculous line that snakes around a bit. It's been a couple years since I stepped foot inside The Container Store. I was cleaning out a drawer the other day and found a $50 gift card from a neighbor for taking care of their dog...so generous. The timing couldn't have been more perfect, because I was in need of some hangers and anything else to help get our house organized in the closet department. I priced hangers at other big box stores, and I'm pretty sure The Container Store had the best deal on white plastic hangers that matched what I already had. This was my first in-store visit (aside from the grocery store), since Covid. Not going to lie, I probably wouldn't have gone in...but $50! It was pretty crowded in there, but I went straight to the hangers and grabbed what I needed and added a couple of nice laundry baskets. I stood in a long line, but it was slow because the counters were being thoroughly wiped down between customers (fine by me). The store was properly marked with 6' social distancing stickers, and everyone had masks on and seemed to be practicing safe measures. Prior to getting in line I spent some time looking around. Can I be honest with you? WOW...I forgot how pricey The Container Store is! I saw a canvas laundry basket for $99 and other organizers I would have dreamed to have. Though I will continue to dream about the organizers, I will for sure come back for hangers, cardboard gift/shipping boxes and wrapping paper during the holidays. read more

I went in first thing in the morning yesterday. The staff was nice, positive energy, and prompt with my pickup. The store was also really clean and had some fun tables set up. I could easily spend too much money there but will probably be back for organizational solutions later this year. read more

Warning - Container Store severely regulates the reviews on its site. I would not trust as they tend not to publish many of the bad or lower-rated ones. Here's how I know. I bought a $7 Casabella Contour Spray Bottle. It was complete crap. Stopped working after a few weeks. I don't live that close to the store and so by the time I tried to return it, it was over the 120 days. I called Customer Service while I was in the store, and they said absolutely a manager could make an exception to the 120 days. So, while at this store in Northbrook, I asked manager John Winkle to help. Not only did he refuse, he laughed at me in front of all customers behind me in line. What just happened? Over a silly $7 spray bottle? I called Customer Service back and spoke with Cynthia. She said would call John Winkle and speak to him and then call me back because she thought that was ridiculous. Cynthia never called me back. Look it's not about the $6.99. It's the principle. I have spent thousands of dollars with this company - outfitting 2 closets with Elfa stuff. You mean to tell me that if something went wrong 4 months later, some defect, that I'd be screwed? That's exactly what John Winkle said. Too bad. With this attitude, why are we trusting them with our hard-earned cash? I for one can't in good faith spend money with a company that wipes their hands entirely with the purchase after 4 months. So, the icing on the cake was I tried to post a review on the Container Store website under the product to warn people what garbage it was, and they have ignored it. It's been 3 months. I've tried several times and they have just ignored the review. I think it's because it was a 1-star negative review (would have done lower if I could). This place is cool. They've got all sorts of containers and storage ideas: for the bedroom, the kitchen, the pantry, computer areas, etc... All sorts of fabulous ideas! Staff needs training in service dog rules and regulars. Approached by a man claiming to be a manager who told me dogs weren't allowed. My dog, though he doesn't need to be, was clearly marked as a service dog. It was less disturbing that he was clueless than that he had an angry, arrogant approach. Since I don't have much time I like to order online and pick up. 2 out of the 3 times I've placed an order online I actually had to wait longer than 15 minutes which I think is ridiculous. It would have been faster to pick the item up myself and pay for it. The last time was better. Overall, I like the items they sell. The mason jars and italian glass containers are great. It was actually cheaper here than Home Goods for the glass containers - That's a plus. Just wished it was a bit more organized for the online pick ups. read more

Ahhhhhhhhh. All things organizing. This is where I am meant to be. When I walk into this store all my troubles seem to just melt away. This is a lovely, well organized (get it) store. The staff is lovely and helpful, but it can be hard to find someone when you need someone. They have anything you can imagine there for your organized needs, even things you didn't know existed. I will say prices can be a bit higher here then elsewhere, but I am the person that often needs to see it an visual the real thing when organizing. Container store used to be my go to place for wrapping paper, boxes, ribbon, all the things that made watching family rip open Christmas presents fun. I didn't want to order from Amazon. I'm forced to buy from Amazon now as the selection was non-existent. I am writing this review in December but started looking for wrapping paper and ribbon much earlier. They didn't have much to choose from then or now. It's hard not to shop from Amazon when they seem to have what I want and need. read more

I purchased 5 archival photo storage boxes that seem to show every fingerprint upon touching them! I have made sure to keep my hands clean and dry but yet they still are showing weird smudges throughout. I bought these items in a contactless pick-up, for a very good reason! Upon calling the store, a very rude man told me there is no way to resolve this without coming into the store. Period. No apologies for the poor product or other suggestions, just.... we don't do that. Goodbye. I love the container store. It has a plethora of organizing ideas and products. I kind of wish that I could use everything in the store and have a completely organized and good looking home. Never gonna happen! During the holidays the have the best wrapping, ribbons and bows and lots of cool stocking stuffers. Well... some Container Stores are not as customer focused as others. I just ordered elfa for a huge closet online for pickup in Northbrook store. When I came to pick up they had just started a 25% off sale so I asked them to adjust the price. They said I have to "pick it up" and then return it and then rebuy... what?... really??? After asking twice, the stock boy checked w the floor manager, Kristen, who was incredibly snippy and said that it can be adjusted by the store manager "within a week". I asked for some sort of record (before lugging an entire wardrobe out of the store) and the clerk asked... "well, you have her word..." and told me to call the store a week from now to check. My question is... would you (Container Store) let a customer walk out of the store with only paying for part of the merchandise because the customer gave his/her word that I'll pay the rest within a week... needless to say, I'll be moving my business back to the Schaumburg store... shame on you (Kristen)!!! read more

I went to pick up one item from the Northbrook store and waited in line for over 15 minutes. The line was growing and not moving at all. One of the salesmen walked by and I asked if it would be possible for them to open up another register. He replied to me in such a rude and disrespectful manner, telling me that I was only the second person line so I should essentially shut up and deal with it. Here's a little secret: while I'm a terribly disorganized person, I LOVE the idea of organizing. And all the little containers and doodads that go with it. Perhaps someday my love of the accessories will grow into a love for the activity, but it's unlikely. Everytime I walk into this store I get a little, well, ok, a LOT overwhelmed. So much fun stuff! Everything you could possibly need to organize any room in your house, and then some! My only gripes: 1) it's expensive!! You can get (some) of the same things for much less at other places (example: wrapping paper. unless you get it on sale here, get it somewhere else) and 2) they rearranged the whole store and, well, if I was overwhelmed before... I just tricked out my desk with matching inbox, letter holder, files boxes, etc. On to my closet next. I'm a big fan of organization and honestly, sections in my house would be organized like the Container Store's if I had some more time in my day to do it. The store is really neat with a lot of helpful solutions for your organizing needs and the staff seems very friendly as well. On a recent trip, my boyfriend and I had three different employees greet us and ask us if we needed help. Also, they have a section where you can design and remodel your closet, which is nice. However, the stuff can get pretty pricey and I'm sure that you can find most of those items elsewhere for a fraction of the cost. read more

This gets a three star rating simply because their selection of storage pieces, containers and the like gets a five star rating, but their awfully high prices get a one star rating. So it averages out to three. If I need to find a container to hold "something" a browse around this store will usually turn up several options. It's also a great place to find all types of boxes if you want to give someone a gift that didn't come in its own box. Good selection of Christmas wrapping and the like too. But see your banker first, because you will spend a small fortune. My sister-in-law mentioned that The Party Store might have some similar options at lower prices - I might check them out next time. But for some pieces, The Container Store is the only game in town, and its probably just as cost effective spending the money there than chasing all over for items and spending the money on gas. Finally, I always have experienced good customer service at this store - worth mentioning as that can be hard to come by nowadays. read more

It took 3 sales associates to answer the most basic questions and when we went to check out had sticker shock that it was over $200. We didn't buy it. I have to give this place 5 stars. I'm "California closeting" all my closets in my apartment. I decided to start with the easiest linen closet and walked in with no idea what I would find. I started looking at the selection, but then someone came to help me. They drew my picture up on the computer then started giving me options on the best way to maximize the space. Everyone was very friendly and I easily paid half what a professional would charge to design my closet. Oh and assembly is a snap...seriously, you really don't need to pay for the installation even if you have no knack for putting things together, you can do this. I'm going back this weekend to tackle the main closet. They have nice finishes so its not just all wire. They have several wood finishes that look stylish and professional. read more

The store has very nice merchandise, that's for sure, but based on two previous visits, I've found the sales staff for the Elfa shelving system to be rather pushy--if not aggressive--in their sales approach. I was on both occasions repeatedly pressured to get quotes for options I clearly indicated I didn't want at the outset. Also, on both occasions, I was greeted with total cost quotes that were WAY above what I'd estimated (you'd think I'd have learned the first time around--when I ended up shelling out nearly $400 on my first new Elfa closet!). My reaction to the quote this time around (I can do it for half this amount at Menards, Lowes or Home Depot) was greeted with a far less than gracious or professional response from the sales person, with the result that I almost certainly won't entertain the Elfa option again. My strong impression is that the sales staff are accustomed to high income customers who will usually say "yes" to all their add-on suggestions--either that, or the Container Store Elfa sales staff are paid on commission (or else they were formerly car salespeople). The long & short of my experience is that the product is very good, but not so good that it's worth literally twice the cost of buying the components you need from elsewhere. I decided instead on a range of 'Made in the USA' shelving products from Menards - where there's no sales pressure, no pretension, and just good down to earth & honest folk--people I'd rather do business with than those I've encountered at The Container Store. The customer service at the Northbrook location was rather unpleasant. After walking out of their Schaumburg location, where I found out the hard way that the online in-stock quantities were significantly overstated, I called ahead to make sure they have the quantity I need at the Northbrook store. The person on the phone wasn't all too interested in helping me ensure I'm not making the drive for nothing, and suggested an online order, at the same time indicating that it might not be ready for pick-up anytime soon. She eventually "graciously" agreed to hold the items for an hour. I did get the items, but when I got to the register, they did not apply the volume discount as advertised and even charged a higher price than displayed on the single item. I showed them their own website that offers the discount, and yet it took another 15 minutes to get a manager's attention and finally apply the discount. All 3 people, with whom I dealt today, were dismissive, indifferent, and unfriendly. I hope it was just a bad moment, and that their weekend gets better, but on the off-chance this is a systemic problem at the store, I thought I'd leave a note. Absolute worst store ever. As another reviewer noted, the order online and pickup in your car in the parking lot is a joke. First time, they never came out and had no record of my order. Second time, they spent 15 minutes looking for the order and then I went into the store and they said they couldn't fulfill the order. Then why did you send me a confirmation that my order was ready. The manager of the store was unhelpful and offered nothing for the hour of my wasted time waiting and driving back and forth. I made him print out a confirmation that my money was refunded which he did. They couldn't even handle that. Days later my credit card has been charged and now I get the inconvenience of calling back today to get refunded for an item they didn't even give me. Stay away. We were going to use their Elfa product for all our closets. No way I would trust them to do anything if they can't fulfill a $20 back to school item order. read more

I have been a client for many years, lots of things in our home are from this establishment. Recently we moved, and took with us the ELFA shelving system that we bought from another container store in Chicago few years ago. I went to the store in Northbrook to ask for an installation of the shelves in our new home. The store staff were busy, so they called for help. Help arrived in the form of a person who was too busy doing other things, who basically threw a promotion card at me and said:"We don't do installation in the store, you will have to call this number"...I followed by calling the number, and the person on the line wanted to see the history of a purchase from 4 years ago, plus the "design"...I explained that there is no design, and that I just want to put the shelves in my garage. Customer service told me to go to the store...get the picture? In short, they do not do installation! When they couldn't find the history of the purchase they started to treat me like a cheat, someone who is not their client, they offer NO SOLUTION, they do not know how to make it easy to be a customer. I'm done with them, and I will do my best to spread this story to all my friends and family. read more
