I love this place. But I don't use it for day to day organization (mostly because of the price mark up on somethings). I go here to explore, to find that way to make a gift for someone special packaged in a unique way, and to find various items related to travel. Exception to the daily organization - THE HANGERS. Most of what I wear to work has to be hung, and not every store will let you keep the hangers (in fact less and less will). For .99/ea., I can come and get shirt or pant/skirt hangers and not worry if 6 months later I drop on, step on it and break it. Cheap to replace. I can just get lost in here just wandering the aisles. Rarely is a trip to the nearby Whole Foods not accompanied by a visit here. I love the variety they offer in any item. Example: sure - you can get Chinese take-out containers in craft stores, but you can get them in say a dozen different sizes here from teeny tiny to humongous. For things like bathroom organizational items (toothbrush, kleenex, etc... holders) you will definitely find items that are far more aesthetically unique than the molded plastic fare you find a say Target or Bed Bath & Beyond. My experience with the staff is limited to the checkout (where there has always been someone readily on-hand, who is pleasant & chatty but also efficient) so I can't comment really on getting assistance while roaming the store, but I do like that without fail I'm asked at checkout if I have a parking ticket that needs to be validated. SOME MEMORABLE ADVENTURES ROAMING THE AISLES HERE: I was giving my friend a carved Netsuke (miniature Japanese carvings - usually out of bone) of a bat one year. It was so small I wanted to wrap it in such a way that my friend would have a pretty box to keep it in that could also maybe serve as a display stand. Off to here where I found an inexpensive little silk wrapped oriental box that worked perfectly. I'd planned a trip overseas to a Formula 1 race and was concerned about securing things like zippers on my luggage, day packs, etc... as crime can be quite high at such events. On a visit here before the trip - found a little packet of miniature zip ties (complete with a nail clipper to cut them off when needed) that I used throughout my travels, particularly to secure my bags from prying eyes when I left things in the hotel room. My mom has a custom design jewelry business. While she does have packaging she uses for items she regularly caries, sometimes she does custom pieces for wedding parties,etc... I like to come to this Container Store to look around at the various bags, boxes, pouches etc.... that might be available to box up her creations and present them in a special way. A lot of the time, I wander in here just to see what might inspire me. One time, I saw these little 4" wide bins and got a flash at how wonderful they would be for wrangling the few onions & potatoes I keep on hand in the pantry. This container store is smaller compared to its other locations. It took a minute for me to find someone willing to help me. After I did the sales associate stopped helping me mid-way and sent another associate. Of course, I wasn't given all of the correct pieces. They validate parking for the first 30 minutes and then you receive a 50% discount. Somehow I always manage to browse/shop longer than 30 minutes. I will return to the Mclean location where its easier to receive help and don't have the hassle of dealing with a parking garage. read more

I never realized everything I actually needed in my life for organizing before I visited the container store. It is not an exaggeration to say I basically, if money were no object, would buy out the entire place! My husband wanted to stop by here specifically for this folding board thing that would help his shirts not become wrinkled. He had looked online and it was only sold at the container store. We easily walked here from Clarendon metro station, although there is parking in a garage if needed. My husband sought out assistance and she knew exactly what he was talking about and where it was located. Customer service during checkout was also friendly. I loved the various little containers they had for packing up food items like dressing and compartmentalized boxes for separating food. I will definitely return here when it comes closer to the start of the new school year so I can properly pack up my lunch and not always have to order out when lunchtime comes. read more

Products are good. Daytime service, not so great. Two things. First, put my name in the que to be helped with ELFA. The main woman was understandably busy but when asked by another employee if I needed help and responded "yes and please remove my name from the que," she said I have to wait my turn and left to help someone else. Huge pet peeve of mine to be so un-dynamic, especially on Tuesday in the suburbs. Second, when checking out the lady was explaining to me a "trick" to the ELFA units. Much to my surprise she assumed I was not listening and looked to my shopping partner, who happened to be my Mom, and asked her "did you listen to that Mom? She might not understand." Not sure what would have prompted a total stranger to insult me but I believe it crosses the line of good customer service. She so highly offended me that I wrote this review. I love The Container Store! The store is clean and neat, there are plenty of options, and it's well-stocked. There's a shipping boxes section too. What I like about this store is they have a model of the item on display so you can see how the product looks like outside of its container and you won't have to feel guilty about tearing open a package to see what's inside. I came in looking for lavender sachets and I found them (on sale!) as well as a hook for the bathroom and a spray bottle for cleaning jobs around the house. The prices are on the high side, but if you stick to things that are on sale, you won't break the bank. read more

I stopped an employee to ask where the closet systems were--and the look she gave me would have been lethal in four states. Talking to her was serviceable as she gave me all relevant information. But her tone and manner was off putting to say the least. Did I remind her of an ex, a bill collector or a televangelist. So I go to meet with the specialist, and where the previous lady was rude --this one was sweetly condescending. There was no way my feeble mind could grasp the quality of the product. And any attempt to explain was coached. If something is on the top of the market in brand, in my past experience the sales people are usually nicer. They know that if you are going to buy a box with four sides, they want to explain why you would pay extra for their box with four sides. It's designer, it's better made, it has this function over others--nope. I was sized up from the door and not worth their time. The Arlington store was much nicer so it is not the company-just this crew. read more

I thought this was a pretty amazing store. It seemed to be a lot larger than the store in the Tysons area. They have storage solutions for many environments: Kitchens, office, closets, and garages. They offer various customizable systems for offices and shelving. The also have a variety of shipping, packing, and wrapping products. There's also a lot of neat gadgets. They have quality products that are not inexpensive. If you're just looking for a plain storage container, go to Walmart. MARISSA WAS THE WORST customer service individual ever!! We pulled up and parked in the click & pick up spot to receive the file cabinet I ordered. I decided to run in a grab a few items while my wife waited in the car for someone to bring out the cabinet. No one ever showed up. I used the ladies room and shopped and 25 minutes passed and still no one showed up to the car. I went to check out with my items and I saw the box with my name on it sitting near the check out counter. I tell the cashier (Marissa *cough* biyotch) that we've been waiting for 30 minutes and I see my box right there. She immediately had an attitude and said she went out twice and never saw anyone. We were literally parked in the first stall as u walk out the door. So I told her I don't know how she didn't see us. She said "I heard you!" in the rudest, snarkiest tone ever! The situation could've ended here with "oh I'm so sorry. I went to the wrong level. Let me help you get this to your car right now". But nooooo... She then said she couldn't find the price on one of my items and would need to go check. When she came back she said all I do is pick the item and take it out. I said "I heard you!" She kept mumbling something under her breath. I tried to read the name on her tag but her long black Elvira-like thinning hair was blocking it. So I said what is your name? Her response was "Marissa"! Do you want to speak to a manager?!" And I said why certainly I would. That wasn't actually my plan but if u insist. ‍ So of course 30 minutes had come and gone and our free parking was no longer Free. I asked another associate for a parking ticket but she needed to call the manager (Stuart) to take care of this. I told Stewie what transpired with Marissa, who btw is too old to be named Marissa. Should be Hazel or Myrtle or Agnes but I digress. He apologized and gave us $6 for parking. HOWEVER, it didn't seem to matter to him how rude she was. He didn't seem shocked at all. I told him Marissa clearly feels like she's untouchable so something humbling really needs to take place for her to come back down to her customer service level of reality. He said nothing. He ended up walking me out to my car and in the end apologized again and said this is not normally how things are at this store. But he never once said he would address the issue with Marissa. What a befitting name! My husband and I went loco in this place! Our first visit to this store was when we decided to move to downtown Washington, DC from Crystal City...which meant a major loss of square footage. Thus, we had to figure out how to make the most of our "smaller space" and The Container Store was a major player in helping us work through that challenge. They have more than just containers here. I've purchased everything from hangers, drawer liners, drawer dividers that allowed us to be able to share one chest of drawers by using the dividers to separate our things; stackable, easy to assemble, shoe racks; trays for fridge organization; perfect sized Simple Human trash cans; etc... The parking is very convenient and they will validate your parking ticket for you, which is sort of a big deal. The staff is knowledgeable of where everything is and they are always very helpful. There's never been a shortage of staff when we went, so someone is always close by when we need assistance. The location is really nice...very close to restaurants, Whole Foods and several other store (i.e. Crate and Barrel). If you hate browsing around in the store (like me), you can also visit their website and place/pay for your order online and select the option for store pick-up. I think it's called "Click and Pick-up". There a couple of designated parking spaces just outside of store the entrance for Click and Pick-up customers. You simply park, go inside and let the clerk know you have a Click and Pick-up order, provide your name and wait for your things to be bagged up. Super easy! We are faithful customers! read more

Overall: It's a Container store -- if you've seen one, you've seen them all. Selection: Containers of all shapes and sizes -- including some you didn't know you needed! It also has some furniture. We bought the Linea entertainment center and 2 book shelves. They look nice, but I'm not super impressed with the quality. The set wasn't cheap, but not as expensive as you may imagine given the other prices in the store. I've heard great things about ELFA, though I haven't purchased any of it. Tip -- this is my go-to for Christmas wrapping and shipping boxes. I haven't found better options (or better quality) for the price anywhere else. Tip 2 -- bring your parking stub inside, they will validate your parking with purchase. Cost: Pretty expensive, but hard to resist. Whoa. I'm usually not a fan of writing about non-eating establishments, but I had to make an exception and write about the incredible customer service. Came on a weekend to look at a desk, and the person who helped me was really helpful and friendly, even though I ended up not purchasing it. Called a few days later after discovering they were having a sale, and again, the person on the phone was really friendly and helpful, even though I didn't purchase it then. Finally purchased it online and chose to pick it up at a later time in the day - when I went to go pick it up, someone almost immediately greeted me and two people picked the desk up and moved it to the car for me. I offered to help, but they brushed me off with a smile. They also helped me pick up an awesome chair. Expensive, yes. But, I will always be willing to pay a premium for (hopefully) good quality stuff and great customer service. Congrats, you've converted me into a loyal customer. read more

I like this place but I want to hate it. I feel like it is mocking me telling me how much I need it because I will never be organized enough. I feel like they must spend a lot of time teaching customer service because everyone there is over the top friendly. What I like is that I can find most things I need and there are so many options. What I'm not crazy about is that sometimes things are priced just right and some things are way overpriced. The Container Store is not for me - my idea of organization is throwing stuff in a pile and then shoving it in a cabinet. I once used Hefty trash bags as my "boxes" for like. . . 3 consecutive moves. With that being said, my fiancee loves this place--it's quite literally her favorite store on earth. Not surprisingly, the store is well laid-out and organized. The staff is almost disturbingly helpful and cheery. (I mean that in a good way.) The woman who helped us set up our Elfa closet quote was cheerful, creative, and efficient. The Elfa setup seems to be worth the trip itself. They can build you a "virtual closet" in about 10-15 minutes, and it looks to be a huge help for people living in cramped DC/MD/VA housing. The place would get a 5-star rating from me if: 1) They had some type of lounge area. I'm just not quite as interested in shelving units as my fiancee, and that's ok, but I could have used some place to chill out with some chairs and maybe a water fountain 2) They had more garage and sports-storage stuff. The store seems a bit "gendered;" i.e. oriented toward what is typically perceived as what women want. I think there's a missing market for stuff that isn't normatively feminine. 3) I wish they had some stuff that were just a skosh more high-end in terms of build quality and appearance. Most of their boxes are made of plastic or "fancy" cardboard. I'd be much more willing to spring for storage boxes that looked like they might actually last through a few moves . . like a Hefty trash bag. read more

I LOVE the container store. I cannot stand *this* location. I live close by this location but find other locations friendlier. The cashier area is great but everything before that is not so good. Especially if I go to the customized closet area. Not even a quick "I will be right with you" or basic eye contact signaling that they know you are there but see you. Each time I am treated like I am invisible. The last time, they walked away and found another person (same race) to help me. Both ladies (white) were standing there with no customers and chatting. One just walked away and came back with the young lady (Black) and introduced us and disappeared. Turned out, the young woman was a new hire. My wife and I recently bought several items at The Container Store after buying a new house. We had to organize several closets including bathroom and kitchen closets as well as bedrooms. One of the items I bought-a Grook, came with cheap installation hardware and I wound up having to use my own. After a trip to Ikea for more organizing items, I realized how cheap Container Store stuff actually is. Ikea items are sturdier, better quality, and commensurate in price. I think the Container Store is just a boutique Walmart. No offense to Walmart if you are looking for inexpensive things. read more

Totally obsessed with this store, in fact, they should be giving me commission with all the sales I have brought in to that store. It has everything for the office, kitchen, bath and bedroom. Such an addictive store and a perfect place to go for those newly moved into the area. It has more variety than Bed Bath & Beyond, but not the 20% coupons BB&B provide. Especially when you consider that a) it's just stuff that you use to organize more useful stuff and b) most of their stuff is made in China. Customer Service is A+ at this store for sure! I wanted to browse and look at what type of desks/office storage they had and was approached by two different sales people--complete with manners and smiles--while I was browsing. One even offered to help me draft out a plan even though I didn't bring my measurements (not in a pushy way--she honestly seemed excited to help). I didn't end up purchasing any organizational products this visit but I did buy Real Simple (on sale during their Elfa sale!) and walked out with three different catalogs to bring home and peruse. The prices were a bit extreme I thought for some smaller items (a shower caddy for $35!) but their sale prices on bigger items were great. Because I live in Maryland, I've spent time and money at the Rockville Pike Container Store. This one, however, seems to be even bigger, and seemed to contain rows upon rows of cool storage items.... I had to restrain myself from spending lots of $. I had a hodgepodge of The Elfa closet system with no receipt as the organizer had it. The customer service was great. I wasn't given any issues whatsoever. Since I didn't have a receipt they gave me a store credit. I also had no issue getting them to cut down a cabinet rack on the spot which made going to an early dinner with the fella easy with no waiting. The place is always pristine and they always ask if I have my parking ticket so they can validate it. They are also good about informing of al their specials. While I've always loved The Container Stores in California, I've yet to have a positive experience at the one a few doors away in Clarendon near Market Commons. There seem to be many employees walking around, but few available to help or even to make eye contact as one reviewer below noted. Several rushed by me. When I stopped to ask for help two said there were on their way to lunch. I waited 20 minutes before I could find anyone to help. In the meantime, I found what I wanted to purchase, a small bookcase already assembled, There were three already assembled - both upstairs and downstairs. I don't have anyone to assemble at my apt so wanted to purchase one already assembled. I was told its against their policy to sell anything assembled, I'd have to assemble it myself. Funny they must have different policies than ones in CA because I've purchased several assembled pieces of furniture there, or maybe some of other Container Stores understand the importance of putting customers ahead of a policy. While there are some good customer reviews of this store, there are enough poor ones that I'd hope the management would rethink their customer service. read more
