i loved The Congee! I was searching for soup places in Alhambra and YELP did not disappoint. Being sick with something viral, I needed something more than arroz caldo (which I made 2 nights prior), and The Congee had different congee offerings PLUS some wonton noodle soup alternatives. My hubs wasnt yet sick at this point so he picked it up. I didnt get to experience the "ambiance" but according to his words: there is no ambiance. Just a really crowded asian restaurant. Ohkay so maybe hubs isnt the best eyes for objectively scoping out new gastronomical places. While the only service I got from them was calling them and ordering food for pickup, they did give very prompt service and had our food out in 15-20mins as promised. We spent about 30bucks for congee with century egg and beef wonton noodles. They hit the spot! They sent spices on the side as well. Will definitely be back! read more

Great! Definitely a "hidden" gem! Hard to figure out where the restaurant is from the parking lot. Had to look at pictures that were already uploaded to figure it out. The customer service was good. The attentiveness was good. The food was great! Got the two new item soup combo of beef stew with wontons. The meat was super soft and the tendon pieces were well cooked and super tender. The wontons are of the best! Super juicy and well made! It even had shrimp that you can very well make out. Also ordered chicken wings, delicious and crispy! I've tried their chicken congee and seafood congee so far and both are great although I prefer their seafood congee. They have vinegar, pepper, soy sauce, chili oil, and siracha available at each table so you can add any sauces to your liking. I personally love eating my congee with lots of pepper and soy sauce. Shrimp Wonton noodle soup: these shrimp wontons are the biggest you'll ever find here! They are stuffed with multiple shrimps and taste delicious. This has been a hidden place for years. They have really great beef noodle soups. They also have really good congee. Great comfort food. The place is a small, but really busy. Everything is fresh and the service is pretty quick. Ordered our food, went to wash my hands and when I came back, my soup was being served. I ordered the beef stew noodles, which was good. I've gotten congee here several times and it's not bad. Pretty good and hits the spot. BUT when slurping the thin egg noodles they use in the Beef Stew and other dishes, it has a potent chemical smell almost like sniffing plant. I had a headache after two bites and returned it. I'm not certain if this is really how it's "supposed" to smell but it was off-putting and I lost my appetite immediately. This is certainly a goto location to get congee (porridge). Huge parking lot and going from the back the location is a tad hard to find because it just has Chinese characters, the front has the English name though. We ended up getting the seafood congee and the two item lo mien with wonton and beef stew. The wontons are fat and plump with huge chunks of shrimp in them. Honestly prob one of the best wontons I've had. I always mix it with the beef stew because the tendon is bomb haha. The porridge is solid as well, flavored well and they don't skimp out on portions. Everything is pretty large! On the side note the menus seem a tad outdated prices were about 1.30 more than advertised on the menu which is fine because inflation but just know that coming in. We got to order the most popular Wonton Noodle Soup and Beef Stew Pan Fried Rolls, oh my, they are so authentic and so good! We also ordered a very HongKongese item - Preserved Bean Curd with Lettuce, not everyone likes Preserved Bean Curd, the good thing is they put it on the side so you don't have to dip the Lettuce into it if you don't feel like it. The Congee serves traditional Cantonese noodle soups, the ultimate comfort food for most Chinese Americans growing up here. The place only has a few tables, definitely a hole-in-the-wall noodle shop. We ordered the 3 item combination rice noodle soup with the standard items: dumplings, beef stew with tendon, and pork liver. The dumplings definitely met the hype; they were huge (half a fist-size), packed with meat, shrimp, and leeks. Super juicy and delicious. The other 2 items, however, were subpar. The brisket and tendon were not tender at all, requiring a lot of chewing and gnawing to pull apart. The pork liver was over cooked; again very chewy. To cook pork liver correctly, it should only be boiled slightly and removed immediately when starting to curl. These are waaaaay beyond cooked. The rice noodles were pretty soggy as well. We also ordered a 2 item combination egg noodle soup with wontons and beef stew/tendon. Like the dumplings, the wontons were phenomenal. Large, packed with shrimp, and super juicy. The egg noodles were definitely cooked way better than the rice noodles. Perfectly Al dente, not soggy by the time you get to the bottom of the bowl. Service was quick, but be ready to order as soon as the waitress comes to you. They wont be patient with you. I will still come back because you can't get wonton/dumplings this size elsewhere, but I would just stick to these 2 items with egg noodles. read more

This is the proverbial hole in the wall with great taste. The beef tendon soup is exceptional. Came here for a second dinner, ahem, as if one dinner is not enough. Even as a second dinner the food tasted great. There were left overs obviously so those were taken home. The soup from the beef tendon soup congealed in the fridge, a sign that the broth was made with a ton of bones. The Maggie chicken congee was also exceptional. The was flavor was great and the chicken was cooked to perfection. Had some left overs and that was savored the next day with a dash of black pepper. Can't wait to try some of the other items. I used to go to Har Lam Kee in Monterey Park for my porridge fix, too bad that place is no more. The porridge (I don't really use the word congee) was good, we got the preserved egg w/shredded pork and the seafood ones, it was thick and had a lot of proteins in it, but it really wasn't anything out of this world, it's porridge you can get at any Cantonese places. Obviously you have to get their shrimp wonton noodles, it comes with 4 giant wontons and perfectly cooked noodles. I was craving some good porridge and noodles today and stumbled upon this place on Yelp. It's a cute little hole in the wall with only 10 small tables. It has a parking lot in the pack with a back entrance. Just make sure you look at the address because there are multiple shops in this plaza. The menu is very simple and small so it's easy to choose what you may want. The cashier was nice and spoke English (thank goodness because my Cantonese is limited). I couldn't figure out which one was the beef brisket that everyone talks about so he helped point it out. I ended up ordering the seafood congee and the beef stew pan fried rolls (beef brisket with rice noodles) togo. I waited for about 10 minutes and was on my way. The seafood congee was very good! It was flavorful and it had a ton of seafood in it. I saw the chef cook it since the kitchen is an open kitchen. They make each congee by order and have all the ingredients on the side. The congee consistency was great, wasn't too watery or too thick. I'd recommend this one to others. As for the beef stew pan fried rolls, I thought it was okay. It did have a lot of beef brisket as others have mentioned. It also had a good amount of noodles. It was a bit too salty, probably because of how much sauce was in the dish and how the noodles soaks it all up. The flavor was very standard, nothing super extraordinary. I enjoyed the little xo hot sauce they provided on the side, I wish they gave more than one because it adds to the dish. They also added a pack of red vinegar but I wasn't sure what it was for... I know people put it on wonton soups so maybe it was just something he puts in for all take out orders. Considering this place is called The Congee, I'm glad to say I'd definitely come back for some congee. But I'll pass on the beef stew and maybe try a wonton noodle instead. read more

the restaurant is great! If you like traditional Chinese congee it's yummy, simple, plain( they have soy sauce, vinegar, white and black pepper, chili oil) to add to it. Simple but delicious food for when you don't want something heavy to eat. The restaurant is very small and the parking lot is extremely small and it's 1 hour parking because it's in a strip mall, so keep that in mind when you go.
