Mango juice
Tiffany Y.

The Colombian Spot has two locations--this one in Oakland and another one in the South Side. I ate one lunch at this location in Oakland. The menu listed bowls, salads, empanadas, arepas, sides (e.g., yuca fries and black beans), desserts, and juices. An employee promptly took my order and payment. Several minutes later, she called out my name for me to pick up the foods from the counter. Here are my ratings for my order: Paisa salad - 5 stars - This salad was a large size, and it was loaded with very fresh lettuce, plantains, red peppers, cheese, avocados, tomatoes, corn, carrots, and cucumber. All of these ingredients worked very well together. Choripollo arepa - 4.5 stars - A crispy corn paddy was filled with chicken chunks, cheese, and other ingredients, and I liked the flavors. Tres leches - 5 stars - This moist cake was delightfully sweet. Mango juice - 5 stars - The sweet taste of this juice was very refreshing.

I picked up my food but it was very good and the brisket was super good. I would def order from here again. The service was nice and the shop is cute!!

Honestly way better than I expected, food comes out quick, meat is grilled deliciously, good range of options. If you are a meat lover, you will love this place. The fried arepas are messy but so so good and the bowls are large too. Very close to my campus so I'll def be a frequent visitor. The meat really is the star of the show here. Not that many seats inside tho.

Beef empanadas

Cute little spot to have a quick lunch! I went for there empanadas and it was so good! Lots of beef filling and the crust seem like it was made out of mash potatoes with I throughly enjoyed! The service was good.

I went here on a Tuesday afternoon with a friend. We ordered our food at the iPad and sat down at a table while we waited for them to call our names. Our food came out pretty quickly and we were able to dig in. The meat in my friend's bowl and in my arepa was tender and flavorful. I also really enjoyed the sweet plantains as well as the tres leches cake. The inside, while not super big with limited seating, was well lit with natural light and had cute details.

Lomo Saltado Bowl.

Lomo Saltado was really low in quality and taste. Refunded right to the spot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Upon opening, I thought my order got messed up because the air immediately filled with a fishy smell. I soon realized why. The "chicken" thigh closely resembled the canned cat food I feed my neighbors cats. Thank god I didn't ask for any sauces because I'm pretty sure my order contained over the recommended daily salt intake. Hm... Maybe I was mistakenly given canned cat food instead? Either way, I was unable to finish. The doesn't look at all like the image displayed on the menu - nicely grilled chicken served with sauted green peppers? Disappointed to be served this with such raving reviews. Hopefully the other menu items are at a higher standard. Unfortunately, I won't find out since I won't be returning.

Paisa Bowl

I love Colombian food and todays experience was a bit disappointing. I ordered the paisa bowl and a vegetarian arepa and both were just okay. The best part of the paisa bowl was the meat - really flavorful and the chicharrones were crispy and salty. The beans were good too. I wish there were a few more plantains in the bowl but overall this was satisfying. The arepa was so disappointing and needed much more salt. The slice of cheese included was not great - I expected shredded mozzarella and this wasn't the right texture to go along with the rest of the fillings. The rice and beans inside the arepa lacked sazón and I wish overall there was more avocado and plantains inside. I expected more and I'm not sure I'd go back unless I tried something completely different.

Sweet Plantains

I was looking for a place to grab dinner at around 9:30 PM, which is not always an easy task in Pittsburgh. Fortunately, this place was open so I decided to give it a try. I'm definitely glad I did! I ordered 2 different arepas which was more than enough food, but just 1 might not have been enough for dinner. My favorite of the arepas was the choripollo. The meat was so tender and flavorful and the toppings complemented it perfectly. The ropa vieja was also delicious, but not my favorite of the 2. I also ordered a side of sweet plantains which was a nice dessert. The interior has a small section for seating and would be a good place to stop of lunch if you worked in the area. The staff were friendly and inviting, despite my visit being close to their closing time. Overall, I had a great experience here and will definitely be back in the future.

Chimi Chicken Bowl

Stopped in for lunch recently and got the chimi chicken bowl. Wowza, what a giant lunch! The bowl had some red beans, chicken, purple cabbage slaw, and a heaping portion of rice. I think the food was more or less pre-made (it took only a minute for them to bring it out). But it was tasty and more than you get for most fast-casual lunch spots (though at $12 it was a bit more expensive; they also have sandwich options for $9-10). I work nearby so will definitely be back to try other items off the menu.

Ropa Vieja Bowl

First time trying the new Colombian Spot location on Forbes avenue in the heart of Oakland! We wanted to come here for a while now after falling in love with their SouthSide location! It was a late night, and none of us felt like coming, so we took the excuse to grab take out from The Colombian Spot! I got the chimi chicken bowl, and my girlfriend got the Ropa vieja bowl! Both bowls were amazing, the meat in both was so tender and flavorful, and there was a good portion of rice and beans in both bowls, so you definitely get your money's worth! I definitely can claim their arepas at their SouthSide location is amazing, and I hope to come back soon try the arepas here! Definitely check it out for a quick lunch while in the Oakland area!

Salad

The salad was very tasty and had unique ingredients. I liked the green dressing, I had to ask for another as it comes with only 1 small container. I'd come back to get this salad.

Heads up, this location in Lawrenceville is a food truck. Not hating on food trucks, but I wish I had known that before going. It was chilly - though being from So Cal I'm usually cold out here. With that out of that way, dang it was good! I normally don't like drinks with flavors that overpower the espresso, but with the mocka latte I had, that's exactly what I wanted. The bittersweet flavor of the cacao shone through, like a indulgent dark chocolate. Haters gonna hate, but dark chocolate is one of the purest forms, and each sip gave me exactly what I was looking for. As for the arepas... Well, I've never had one before, so I don't have a measuring stick for this, but I really liked mine! I had the breakfast arepa with bacon. Scrambled eggs, nice bacon chunks, cheese, a little green sauce, all sandwiched in what I can only describe as like corn flatbread pieces. So good and surprisingly filling! I will probably go to the brick-and-mortar shop next to see how it compares, but if you're in the Lawrenceville area and want a unique pick-me-up, this is a great option.

The menu lists appetizers (e.g., tequenos, tostones, yucca, and tortilla chips with dips), Venezuelan arepas (gluten-free cornmeal cakes filled with meats, cheese, or vegetables), Venezuelan empanadas (gluten-free cornmeal filled with meats, cheese, black beans, or plantains), Venezuelan mains (gluten-free criollo, cachapa, and patacones), Mexican tacos, Mexican burritos, Mexican enchiladas, non-alcoholic beverages, desserts (e.g., flan and churros), and more. Venezuelan cuisine is a blend of indigenous, Spanish, and African influences, and most of it is naturally gluten-free. In addition, several vegetarian options are available, and some menu items can be customized to be vegan. Since 2021, my husband and I have eaten here off and on, and all of our meals have been excellent. The employees promptly and courteously serve us. Here are my ratings for the menu items that we ate: Tortilla chips with queso and guacamole - 4.5 stars - The tortilla chips had a good flavor. The queso tasted extremely cheesy. The guacamole was very freshly made. Beef empanada - 4.5 stars - The fried-dough exterior was perfectly crispy, and the beef filling was savory. I particularly enjoyed the green sauce on the side. Seafood empanada - 3.5 stars - This fried cornmeal pastry was filled with tilapia, shrimp, and vegetables. It was a large size, and the flavors were alright. Pabellon empanada - 4.5 stars - This fried cornmeal pastry contained black beans, white cheese, shredded beef, and sweet plantains. My husband ate it and said that he really liked it. Llanera chicken arepa - 5 stars - This arepa is my husband's favorite go-to. It was a very large size, and it was stuffed with much chicken, lettuce, tomato (although my husband does not like tomato), cheese, and guacamole. My husband commented that the combination of flavors was delicious. On the side was guasacaca, a tangy Venezuelan sauce that is made from avocados, green peppers, garlic, cilantro, lime juice, and mayonnaise. Chicken quesadilla - 4 stars - A flour tortilla was filled with shredded chicken, cheese, onions, and peppers. The ingredients were very fresh, but the quesadilla tasted slightly plain even with the sides of guacamole and sour cream, so I dipped it in queso. Veggie quesadilla - 5 stars - A flour tortilla was stuffed with yellow cheese, green peppers, and onions. On the side were pico de gallo, lettuce, guacamole, and sour cream. I really liked the gooey cheese and the flavors of the vegetables. Soft tacos - 4.5 stars - My husband ate these tacos. One was filled with chicken, and the other was filled with pork. He seemed to enjoy them. Plantains - 5 stars - These fried plantains tasted very sweet, and they were topped with some cheese. The serving size was generous. Tres leches cake - 5 stars - A large slice of cake was soaked in three milks and topped with whipped cream and cinnamon. I really enjoyed the taste of the sweet cake and the spicy cinnamon.
