Here are my ratings for the menu items that we ate: Tortilla chips with queso and guacamole - 4.5 stars - The tortilla chips had a good flavor. The queso tasted extremely cheesy. The guacamole was very freshly made. Beef empanada - 4.5 stars - The fried-dough exterior was perfectly crispy, and the beef filling was savory. I particularly enjoyed the green sauce on the side. Seafood empanada - 3.5 stars - This fried cornmeal pastry was filled with tilapia, shrimp, and vegetables. It was a large size, and the flavors were alright. Pabellon empanada - 4.5 stars - This fried cornmeal pastry contained black beans, white cheese, shredded beef, and sweet plantains. My husband ate it and said that he really liked it. Llanera chicken arepa - 5 stars - This arepa is my husband's favorite go-to. It was a very large size, and it was stuffed with much chicken, lettuce, tomato (although my husband does not like tomato), cheese, and guacamole. My husband commented that the combination of flavors was delicious. On the side was guasacaca, a tangy Venezuelan sauce that is made from avocados, green peppers, garlic, cilantro, lime juice, and mayonnaise. Chicken quesadilla - 4 stars - A flour tortilla was filled with shredded chicken, cheese, onions, and peppers. The ingredients were very fresh, but the quesadilla tasted slightly plain even with the sides of guacamole and sour cream, so I dipped it in queso. Veggie quesadilla - 5 stars - A flour tortilla was stuffed with yellow cheese, green peppers, and onions. On the side were pico de gallo, lettuce, guacamole, and sour cream. I really liked the gooey cheese and the flavors of the vegetables. Soft tacos - 4.5 stars - My husband ate these tacos. One was filled with chicken, and the other was filled with pork. He seemed to enjoy them. Plantains - 5 stars - These fried plantains tasted very sweet, and they were topped with some cheese. The serving size was generous. Tres leches cake - 5 stars - A large slice of cake was soaked in three milks and topped with whipped cream and cinnamon. I really enjoyed the taste of the sweet cake and the spicy cinnamon. read more

We stopped in on a Sunday afternoon and were happily greeted by an employee at the counter. We decided to order food to go - two arepas and some churros. The gentleman at the counter offered some suggestions as we looked at the menu. He even let us sample some of the fresh juices! The restaurant is bright and welcoming with plenty of windows and seating. The special churro station off to the right instantly got my mouth watering. I had to try them! The arepas looked and smelled so good we couldn't wait to dig in, so we ate in the car. The arepa was crispy but fluffy. It was packed with fillings and flavor. First time visiting Pabellon, it did not disappoint! The inside, although completely empty when we arrived, is simply decorated and clean. They have a counter for takeout orders but also offer sit down, full service dining. We chose to eat there and the staff was very friendly and attentive. Their menu is half Venezuelan food and half Mexican food. We ordered empanadas and a cachapa from the Venezuelan menu. The empanadas were flavorful and perfectly crisp. This place checks all the boxes - clean and welcoming interior, fast service, and delicious Venezuelan cuisine. I got the llenara steak arepa (steak with lettuce / tomato / guacamole and grilled white cheese, sandwiched between two toasted cornmeal pieces). The arepa was super filling, with crispy hot corn cakes, fresh vegetables, and the special zesty guasacaca. The chips and salsa were good too, but the arepa really goes above and beyond. Delicious food, with a varied menu, Pabellón is definitely worth the visit. The sauces are one highlight of Venezuelan cuisine and they are very good here. The Empanadas are particularly wonderful. The fried Yucca are unique and taste great. Definitely worth visiting, the food is not what you typically find in the area, and I think it's quite authentic. The food is delicious, the staff are friendly and have the 2 most adorable children, and the wait was short. Picked up lunch for 4 adults and we thoroughly enjoyed all of our choices, and was enough food to try bites of everything and be full. We ordered chips and queso, Shredded Beef Arepa, Shredded Chicken Arepa, and Llanera Steak Arepas. Shredded Chicken Empanada, Ground Beef Empanada and White cheese Empanada. Pabellon is easily in my list of top 5 places to grab a bite around Pittsburgh. This eatery serves both Venezuelan and Mexican cuisine, and everything I've ordered is absolutely delicious! Most of the time I order off of their Venezuelan menu. I like Mexican food, but when given the choice between tacos and arepas, I've got to go with arepas! Especially since there's a wide range of options when ordering one here. Most of the arepas are more savory and include beef or chicken as the main ingredient. Others just contain cheese and vegetables/black beans, which is great on days that I don't feel like eating a lot of meat. There's an Arepa Caprese that is quite good - it's got the classic Caprese ingredients served up on the arepa-style dough. And there's at least one arepa that has eggs as the protein, i.e. it's got more of a breakfast vibe going on. There are a number of Venezuelan entrées available here as well, and they're great. I especially recommend the Cachapa. But if you just order a couple of arepas, you're going to be super full and satisfied. Actually, a single arepa will do the trick, but why only order one when you can explore more of the menu and take home leftovers for later? Another item I love ordering when I'm sharing a meal with family or friends is the Venezuelan Mix. This appetizer platter includes empanadas, tequeños, small arepas, yucca, and tostones. It's so good, and it's such a way to explore more of Pabellon's menu! I've raved about this place enough. It's great, I love it, and writing this review has me feeling hungry. While working in Allegheny County, I stopped in here for lunch one day... Service was great, very friendly and helpful. Their menu is expansive! Lots of interesting items on the menu, mostly all Venezuelan. They have another menu filled with the typical Mexican items as well. I started with their yuca, which was fresh and great... They sprinkled a decent amount of cheese on it and then added their mayo-based sauce - Tasty! I dipped it in their hot sauce, which had great flavor and lots of heat!! Next step was to enjoy their shredded chicken arepa which was incredible! Think of a chicken salad, but with shredded chicken and avocado in the sauce - tasty!! The arepa bun was perfect and tasted like a nice corn bun. The filling was excellent! I also tried a ground beef empanada and it was excellent! Very surprised to find this gem right on the outskirts of Pittsburgh. Started off thinking takeout, but the dining area was empty and welcoming so decided to dine in. Socially distancing was good as there were not that many people in that day. This Mexican & Venezuelan restaurant has an extensive menu from both countries so there's a lot of tasty choices as well as some desserts. A plethora of food was ordered this day from Mahi Mahi tacos to arepas to churros. Was throughly impressed with the tastes from the menu. Fish taco were the best I've had anywhere. I believe they were pan fried versus the traditional beer battered fried. I'll for sure be stopping back in. I also have to give a shoutout to our waiter who was all around delightful. We had great conversation, talked through menu options and even learned a little bit about Venezuelan. Pittsburgh has way more options than people think. Just gotta know where to go. read more

Eek! Every time I come back, something changes! My last review mentioned how the chips and salsa weren't fantastic, but sadly, this time there were no chips and salsa! Also, no music, which was a bummer. However, we were the only people in the dining area, so I can understand how playing music for guests wasn't high priority. I did see a live music set up in the corner, so I am curious when they have that! I am such a live music fan, that would be something awesome to check out. Yesterday, I went the boring route and ordered the Mexican Green Enchiladas, which I have ordered several times before and are always very good. I did not have sour cream, and they didn't add the cheese. I didn't request this, but I'm glad they left it off (I took this as a sign to eat healthier). Rather than having a meat, I asked if they could do all vegetables, and that was no problem. My fiancé had a platter, which he really enjoyed. This was his first time having Venezuelan food, so the platter was the way to go because he got to try a little bit of everything. This place is amazing and I wish it wasn't located so far away from me. I would 10/10 recommend the Pabellon arepa (pro tip: ask for extra green sauce). It was one of the best arepas I've ever had. Everything about it was exceptional - perfectly cooked and fillings bursting with flavor. The shredded beef was so juicy and mixed in well with the cheese and beans. The sweet plantains was the cherry on top! The craziest part is that it was only $10 and I left super stuffed. Pabellon is a gem! They have a strong takeout game but I enjoyed eating at the restaurant. They have a two sided menu - one is traditional Venezuelan and the other is more American Mexican. Do yourself a favor and only order off the Venezuelan menu. The specialty is the cachapa - a fried corn cake filled with cheese and shredded beef. Split this as it is heavy and filling. The corn cake is crispy but soft and sweet but salty - complete perfection. The beef is well seasoned and tender. The pabellon arepa has excellent flavor and fresh ingredients - I loved the cilantro sauce. We also ordered an empanada that was fantastic. I love me a good Spanish cuisine location! I was full, satisfied and delighted after leaving Pabellon for the first time! The server was super friendly. I happened to go at a time of day where it wasn't busy or crowded which was a suprise! Servings sizes were perfect. I tried the Pabellon arepa and a great arepa to me is one that you start eating handheld and have to end it with a fork. It was packed to the gills with all the goods. Super flavorful and tasty. The arepa dough was cooked perfectly (which in some places they just don't get right, Pabellon place got it right!) . I loved the salchipapa but I am used to ones that have pickled or fresh red onions in them, these did not have them. Which I was searching for a bit of that freshness. I wouldn't knock it down a star for that though. Just a personal preference. I am mad at myself for not getting churros while I was there because those looked amazing! We live a half mile from Pabellon so we've been there many times and have ordered from both the Mexican menu (good stuff) and the Venezuelan menu (amazing stuff). Arepas are terrific--*STUFFED* full--and crispy enough on the outside to hold up to the stuffings. My favorite is the Pabellon arepa, but I've also had the steak llanera. I'm also a fan of the Cheese Delight plate, which kind of makes you feel like you're sitting down to eat at a Venezuelan family table--homey and comforting. But my very favorite dish at Pabellon is the cachapa--a sweet(ish) corn cake encasing a big pile of tender, delicious shredded beef and salty melted cheese. It's big (takes up the whole plate on which it is served) and so satisfying. (My photo below is just the tail end of it. I ate most of it before it occurred to me to take a pic.) Pabellon isn't inexpensive, but the quality of the food is just terrific and portion sizes are generous. Skip the $9 chips and salsa starter and instead order the Venezuelan taquenos, which are well worth the nine bucks. Tres leches for dessert is a nice treat to share, though there's a churro place attached to Pabellon if that's more your thing. This is a really tasty little family run place, and you can dine in or take out. I prefer to dine in for the best quality arepas and more. read more

I recently discovered that I love Venezuelan food. I've been here a while ago, and someone I know recommends this place. I got the chicken empanada, shredded beef empanada, and a cachapa. First with the empanadas...these could very well be the best empanadas in Pittsburgh. The meat is just amazing. The shredded chicken is incredible flavorful and the texture is on point too. It's got just a bit of sweetness, a little smokiness, just delicious. The outer shell for these little empanadas is also great. The beef empanada was very good too. The meat is seasoned very well and it's not too fatty. Again, super flavorful and quite large for just a few dollars. The sauce they serve with it comes in a somewhat small container, but it's pretty good. It had a slight cucumber-like flavor to it. The cachapa here is quite good, but I still prefer Cilantro and Ajo's. Again, the meat is amazing. If you eat meat, order something with lots of protein and you won't be disappointed. The corn surrounding the meat was good, but was just missing something. I do like that you can see the kernels of corn though. The cheese was pretty standard but seemed to be high quality. I stopped by here last night with my wife for dinner. We had found Pabellon while looking at places to eat on Yelp. After perusing their online menu, we placed an order at 1:00 PM for 6:30 PM pickup. Later that evening, we headed on over intending to get to the restaurant at 6:35 PM and received a text at 6:17 PM that our food was ready. Pabellon is located on Banksville Road in a stand-alone building but due to the median in the center, you have to be heading towards the city to access it. The inside of this place consisted of a dining room to the left which I only saw through the front and then two counters, one for Pabellon and another for churros. Pickup here was mostly a breeze although they were out of one of the items that we had ordered and so after asking about something similar, quickly issued a refund. For dinner on this evening my wife and I decided to split a number of different items and so we ordered the Venezuelan Mix appetizer, chips and choriqueso, Pabellon Crioli and Venezuelan Taquenos Nutella. It was the Nutella taquenos that they were out of and they offered to give us regular taquenos with a side of Nutella instead which I normally would have accepted, but we already had taquenos in our Venezuela Mix and we didn't need that many of them. In any case, the menu described the Venezuela Mix as 3 Small Empanadas, 4 Tequeños , 4 Small Arepas, Small Side of Yucca, 3 Tostones and served with Guasacaca Sauce and Sour Cream while the Pabellon Crioli consisted of Rice, Black Beans, Shredded Beef, Sweet Plantains and 2 small Arepas. Last but certainly not least was choriqueso which was Pork Sausage, Green Tomato Sauce and Queso Dip. Served with Corn Chips. On the ride home both my wife and I thought it smelled delicious and upon taking it out we saw that it was a ton of food. My wife and I started out with the Venezuela Mix which in itself had a ton of variety and everything on it was good. The empanadas ended up being cheese, beef and chicken, with the chicken being my favorite of the fillings. Then I also thought that the taquenos were good, especially the puff pastry or whatever was around the cheese. My favorite of all of the appetizers ended up being the tostados which had a cheese (maybe cotija) and a pink sauce on top. The plantains themselves were super crispy and that cheese and sauce really made them. While eating all of this I also had some bites of the chips and queso. The chorizo in it was spiced nicely with lots of flavor and enough heat to be hot, but not enough to make it too spicy for my wife to eat it. The cheese was also good and I only wish that there was more of the green tomato sauce to add that pinch of acidity into it as I really enjoyed it when I got some. By this time both my wife and I were pretty full but we both tried the Pabellon which would become lunch for us the next day. The beef was flavorful and moist while the beans had a nice cheese on it and the plantains were sweet and cooked nicely. The bottom line for me is that I would definitely head back here again in the future. This is my go to place to take visitors to lunch. First of all, this is a family owned business and their specialty is not Mexican, although the Mexican food is excellent. Their specialty is Venezuelan cuisine and everything on the menu is delicious. The family that owns it makes you feel like family when you come in, do yourself a favor and stop by. read more

1. It's on a busy road and there's only one other table or people. 2. Exceptionally slow and indifferent service. 3. After waiting about a half an hour for my food, it came out lukewarm. When I told the waitress, she literally acted completely indifferent! There was no emotion there. She made no attempt to defend the product nor rectify the situation. I push the plate over to her and said that it was lukewarm like it had been sitting for a while. She took the plate back into the kitchen. At that point I just said I don't want anything in return. She had no problem not charging me for the food I didn't eat and I left. The portion it should be noted was exceptionally small for the high price. I always find disconcerting. Wanna restaurant is completely empty during the lunch rush time. 4. The music was exceptionally loud and there was next to no ambience in this place. To be honest, the biggest red flag came when I sat down and recognized that she put no ice in my water, and that it was nine dollars for chips and salsa! I found this place after searching for a place with the best Tres Leches cake in the area. I was definitely elated the decision! The size of the cake is a little small as compared to supermarkets. But, the taste is way better than any other place. The cake is spongy. You can taste the richness of the milks. The chocolate dusting on the cake showed how much care went into the cake's creation. On a scale of documentaries to romances, Pabellon (specifically their super burrito) puts me in mind of the romance, The Hooker and the Hermit by LH Cosway and Penny Reid. I ordered a Super Burrito, Arepa Triple Play, and a side of Sweet Plantains, and oh my wow, the flavor delivered was absolutely fantastic. The super burrito was insane in its size (and my boyfriend and I ate it in two sittings). Meanwhile, the Arepa Triple Play offered a swoon-worthy flavor fest with its layers of cheese, meat, and fried dough. And goodness gracious, I adore sweet plantains, and they were exactly my craving satisfied. Using GrubHub, I ordered takeout ASAP, and Pabellon had the order ready early. Since moving here from Ohio I've had an issue finding quality Mexican food outside of the strip district...that led to trying Pabellon today. We ordered through a 3rd party app so I can't comment on the location or staff. We ordered an XL Chicken Burrito, Mole Enchiladas, & Chocolate Churros. All I can say is wow... While the menu seems a little pricey it won't leave you hungry. My wife loved the XL burrito and will be getting at least 2 meals from it as it is the size of a small cake. She raved about the cheese salsa. The Mole Enchiladas were terrific. I got them with chicken tinga. The chocolate mole sauce blended well with the flavor of the chicken giving it a savory & seeet balance with a little heat. The rice & black beans were what you'd expect. The churros were doughy and not overly coated with cinnamon & sugar which was a nice touch. When out in the South Hills for an appointment, I was lucky enough to drive by and see this wonderful new restaurant. So happy I learned about it. I was immediately greeted when I came in the door and was given all the time I need to read the menu. There were so many delicious things. I wanted to try them all. We decided to try the Venezuelan side of the menu since there are almost no authentic Latin American Restaurants in Pittsburgh. So excited to finally have one! My husband and I really enjoyed it. I got the pabellon and it was really delicious. I loved the Barbacoa or shredded beef and especially the maduros or sweet plantains. Do NOT sleep on this restaurant; the location and exterior may give an off-vibe, but the food is off the chain. Keep in mind the empanadas are Venezuelan style, thus made with a corn dough, not a Puerto Rican style dough. SO. GOOD. The restaurant itself is uniquely dated, it adds to the experience. There is a Mexican and a Venezuelan menu... we came hungry and tried both. Mexican we started with chips and salsa which were weirdly overpriced, but great homemade salsa. Venezuelan side we got tequenia's, which are such an awesome version of Italian cheese sticks. Served with a sauce that has thousand island hints. Also got a shredded chicken empanada that was delish! For entree's, Mexican we got the super burrito, which was truly SUPER. It's huge and packed with ingredients. We got the shrimp, but may get shredded beef next times. On the Venezuelan side I got the Pabellon arepa.
